- This video shows how to turn off the fireplace in the summer. Turning off the pilot will save about $100 per year in natural gas.
Huge thanks for this, man. We used our gas fireplace for the first time tonight- landlord said it was broken, but our neighbor hooked us up. Wouldn't turn off, it's after midnight so no one else around to help, and realized through your video that you have to push the knob in a little to get it to "off". Simple fix, but all thanks to your video; again, thanks.

So you really don't have to close the valve? My main line (the one you say for service) won't move but a few cm and I cannot get it perpendicular. Why would you not need to turn the gas off too?

Just purchased house with this unit. Turned on Fireplace today. I noticed yellow flames were gone after 15 minutes and unit was hot. (Unit vents outside.) Shut off on switch. Reset in fusebox. Didn't work. Fireplace on switch is also on living room receptacles. I shut valve off and called to have Fireplace looked at. I'm not used to dealing with natural gas. We've lived with all electric for 30 years. There's a black on/off switch at bottom left when you open cover. If I shut off the Gray colored valve with the pilot to off will that automatically engage that other switch to off?
The gas valve handle just shuts off the gas. The switch shuts off the solenoid in the gas valve. All gas valves are double solenoid inside plus a third manual valve. I have a video on the construction of a gas valve. The pilot keeps one open. The switch keeps the other open. This way, the gas valve always fails to off at end of life and it never fails to on. It is a fail safe design.

My mom has her pilot on all year long. She doesn’t know how to turn it off and her husband passed away recently so we’re stuck. I would try this but I’m just nervous with anything electric and gas. Haha
Help. I just shut it all down like you demonstrated but i have a turn key gas valve shut off thingy on the side of the fireplace on the floor. I found the key, do I need to shut it off and if so How? Thank you for any help you can give me.
The valve in the wall is just for service. You can shut down the fireplace for the summer just using the gas valve on the bottom. Turn it all the way to the right where the off position is facing the bottom. Sometimes you have to wiggle it to get it past the pilot position. The indicator is on the bottom just like in the video.
Thank you for replying back. I went ahead and put the key in the floor thingy right after my original post and turned it all the way off clockwise just t be sure. It is all off. Should I turn it back on?
It is fine to leave it off.
Turn off the main gas, as well. I don't know why he says not to worry about it.

How do I convert the gas fireplace into a wood burning fireplace?
My fireplace has an on/off toggle switch inside and a wall switch. Both should be on ?
Just use the wall switch. Keep the one in the fireplace off.

Yes, the main valve can be left on. The gas valve has double closure from the thermopile and the main control. However, the main valve can be turned off in the summer.
