At 1:18 you show the valve being opened but the conversation is about shutting off the gas valve. Please re-visit and edit or remove the video as it could cause people to make a big mistake. Valve in line position is ON and perpendicular to pipe is OFF.
No offense to those, who might mistake it, but it's quite a common sense that when you open the fireplace, which is already on, you turn it the opposite way to shut it off, you see that the little flame is gone, hence it's been turned off. Yes, mine was in line position and I just turned it perpendicular. I never questioned it until I saw this comment. :)
Should the gas be turned off with the key ? When the fire place is not being used and the pilot light is off ? I had a fireplace guy tell me to leave the gas on at all times. So I did that but I was still smelling gas even though the pilot light was off and the emergency valve i could hear click off once i shut pilot off.So I called the tech back and he said this was normal to smell some gas because the fireplace had not been used for a few year. But it still made me nervous so I shut gas off completely with the key
There is absolutely no reason to shut off the gas valve on an intermittent or electronic igniting fireplace. If it is a standing pilot/millivolt system then you shut the control knob on the gas valve to off not the supply line. When you are ready to use the fireplace again just light it again using the piezo igniter . I would suggest having a hearth professional with you while making the video next time . Inspectors are jack of all trades master of none and very know little about fireplace systems or anything to do with the NFPA 211 chimney code.
