    Age and health does take its toll. Tony Banks says he can't play "Mad Man Moon" anymore, and that was one of his most brilliant keyboard performances. As for "professional" musicians not expressing frustration when a rehearsal isn't going well, not true. After a 35 year radio career and lots of interaction with musicians, I know better. In fact, Phil's reaction was mild compared to some other blow ups I've known of. They all readily admit that their rehearsals begin rough, but by the time of the show, they've got it polished very well. That's what rehearsals are for.

      I'm 54 and still a decent drummer. But years ago, I was actually a very good drummer for what I did. I can't do some of what I used to do and that's just toll on the body. It sucks but you learn how to adjust.

    Back in the day, Phil had a legendary quick single bass drum foot, using Bonham's technique and the same pedal - the Ludwig Speed King - which is a direct drive pedal (no chain, no strap). Phil swore by it. Nic, his son, tells a story on Drumeo where got a DW pedal for Christmas and showed it to his dad, and Phil said yeah, but it's no Speed King. LOL! Anyway, Phil hadn't practiced at all before this rehearsal. There's some great rehearsal footage for the 2007 tour shot from behind him playing Los Endos. He holds his own, but it's much less 'busy' playing than on Trick or earlier tours.

    Musicians understand the process... and the need for hours of solo practice and band rehersals... Phil is an extreme perfectionist and near workaholic (Tony, Mike, Steve, Bill, Chester, Daryl, Leland and Peter as well really) and was just frustrated with himself. He is actually one of the nicest superstars and very down to earth- they all were/are. Thanks guys for a lifetime of music!

    Daryl has often told the story of his 1st rehearsal w/ them in 1978 and that 1st day they didn't even play. Another time during the same rehearsals Tony had to ask him what key a song was in!I feel Phil's pain. I'm only 42 and I listen to things I played 20 years ago and I can't play them now.Too many wedding gigs, I guess. I used to be able to play say 'Cinema Show' fairly ably and now I tried it recently and couldn't get through. Different kinds of drumming.

    The part where Phil gets frustrated with himself I believe is actually from a different practice session. Note they're not wearing the same clothes. I think I heard somewhere that they were rehearsing 'Domino' and Phil got real mad at himself because he couldn't remember the words. That may be where it was taken from.

Everyone glaring at me like that due to my inability to play like Wilko Johnson and wanting to shrink into the rehearsal room floor 😄 Phil had it all sorted out in 1977 though when I saw them for the first time in Bristol on the W & W tour. Daryl said that Mike's style of playing is not that technically difficult, but no one else could play it quite like Mike because Mike composed the guitar bits. He didn't say Mike wasn't a great guitar player. As for Phil, he did the drums on record on this piece, and I've seen it go back and forth between him and Chester as to who plays what. Many times they're playing in unison.

    I saw an interview with Daryl where he pretty much said that it seemed to him that no one in the band had really practiced before showing up for rehearsals in 2007, except for himself and Chester. It was also interesting in that interview that Daryl flat out said that Mike is not a great guitar player, but that he has a certain style that sounds good on some songs.

    your'e right, on the duke tour (the only other time they've played the duke travels /ends piece) that part was played by chester because phil got backstage to change clothes and then appearing all white for the final segment of dukes end. even chester did it differently with double kick, so it must be difficult to play this, even for chester, with the snare playing the one's and the kick playing all in betweens...not as easy as it looks

    It's tragic that this tour was perhaps the very last time Phil will be performing behind a drum kit. It's unfair to attack his "unpreparedness". It seems clear that he was dealing with the health issues that finally took their toll, and closing in on 60 yrs of age at the time didn't help either. Like someone else here said, he's a perfectionist and to lose his favorite part of performing had to be very tough to realize. Still hoping he might have a little left in the tank for one more tour!

    I always thought this was Chester's part when playing it live. Looking at old concert footage, it seems Phil gets out from behind the drum kit to get ready to sing the "Guide Vocal" section of the piece. Further it appears Chester uses a double kick for this. Let me know what you think. Thanks..

    • @Fitzibutzi
      @Fitzibutzi 4 роки тому +1

      He certainly does not use double kick, since you can hear lots of open hihats followed by close ones. This is only possible if you are playing the beat one foot with the other food on the hihat. Otherwise you have to have two hihats, one open one close, or some kind of weird mechanic, where the hihats close is you release the foot.

    No - excuse me - not only in a perfect world. It is a characteristic circumstance that Daryl mentioned the fact that they were not prepared properly as most American musicians would not even dream of a similar behaviour. It just is not professional and at the same time it is not loyal to the mates who did practice.

      Phil is a great drummer and I will always remeber him as one of the best. If you play the drums you would know that this part is not technically very difficult; it is a bit fast but very mechanical. Why Phil fails is that he did not practice for sometime and he had some physical problems. He solved it marvelously by modifying it in the live version which was quite good actually. If you watch the documentary, following this part you would hear Mr. Stuermer's comment on Phil's (non)practice habits lately.

    What are you talking about? "Epic" fail? You clearly have no idea about musicianship. You need to rehearse and practice to eliminate failures, that is what every musician does. That's how life works. You didn't thought they would just always play flawless through every tune, right?

    @sturoc0 No one will ever be able to replace Steve Hackett! His body of work speaks for itself.

    Phil trying to do the original rhythm and failing. That may be the reason for both drummers to do a more pop version. In medley it worked sort of well.

    This video makes me laugh. All though it is sad seeing that Phil can’t play as god as he used too.
