- Trish is the owner of StorySpring Consulting and Director of Community Engagement at the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Social Work. A social worker to the core, she advances social change by connecting leaders to resources, opportunities and each other. She is a passionate advocate for housing solutions that address both affordability and the global loneliness epidemic. At the University of Denver, she leads community engagement initiatives and creates gatherings that advance social justice. As a consultant with StorySpring, she provides strategy, facilitation and coaching to nonprofits, social changemakers, and intentional communities. Fueled by her own suburban loneliness and a desire for community, Trish became a founder of Denver’s newest cohousing community. She believes that we are most alive when we are connected, and that intergenerational communal living offers an alternative to our increasingly isolated world. Drawing upon years of experience living communally throughout the world, she urges us to find one another and build our own micro-villages. Trish supports people and organizations advancing social change by connecting them to resources, opportunities and each other.
At the University of Denver, she leads community engagement initiatives and creates gatherings that explore a variety of social justice topics. She listens to community organizations and co-creates mutually-beneficial partnerships that push forward social change. As a consultant and owner of StorySpring, she provides strategy, facilitation and coaching to nonprofits and social changemakers, specifically around their communications and public image efforts.
She is a founding member of Denver’s newest cohousing community, Aria Cohousing, and a passionate advocate for housing solutions that address both the crisis of affordability and the global loneliness epidemic. She is in the process of establishing a micro-village in Wheat Ridge that addresses both. I think about how this talk was given right before Covid. She speaks of loneliness, and nobody knew that we would all be slammed w more isolation than we even imagined. I really want something like this in my future.
I'm am building 3 co-living models in the Los Angeles area. Torrance, East Hollywood and Boyle Heights. The community should be established late 2021 or as late as 2022. I've been watching videos about the pros and cons, I also take note of what can be improved for a better experience. This TED talk has served me best, the purpose for co living has many layers but none more important than human connection. Thank you

While canvassing in Denver for Sen Jason Crow, I ran into my first co-housing community and fell in love! Living in one is now my dream.
Thank you so much for sharing your story. This is one of the most important TedTalks I have ever watched. I am at the beginning stages of setting up communal living and you have inspired me so much.
5 years ago I found myself living in a sober living home, for those unfamiliar with them it’s typically as in my case a large regular suburban single family home. The first one I lived in everyone shared a bedroom. Not going to go into too much detail but the last 3 years the current one I’m in I have my own private small bedroom. But I believe living in this situation has really helped me, I’d also add that it’s been nice having 2 out of the 8 other roommates here during the duration of my stay. It’s helped me learn social skill, better boundaries and has helped my mindset to see others in a different way, as well as learning more about myself. I’d like to move out soon would like to find a home not labeled as a sober living home because of the stigma. Would like to live with good healthy, people that are striving to be better and healthier every day

I would get into a co housing environment any day. I believe the only way to have a full life is to live in an environment where people help each other in every way. And I would live in a Tiny Home any day..... Seriously.... Living smaller is living bigger in many ways.

Within a disconnected society, cohousing provides a chance to develop your social space with others who respect your contributions. And the others are amazingly talented folks, guided to help each other create a sane 'home'.

Important to consider how to weather pandemics in cohousing communities. Though Cohousing is different from coliving
@@shaemcparland6456 from what I see, nothing should change within the community but maybe they'll be safer when interacting with people outside of the community.

That's a really great question Kenaz, and one that has a different answer for each community. Some have adopted strict guidelines in their interaction with the "outside" world in order to continue to gather and keep all members safe, some have temporarily held off on communal meals, etc in order to respect different risk levels in the community. I have seen really beautiful expressions of community and mutual aid throughout this time, and a lot of very creative ideas for staying connected.
@@trishify Hi Trish, I'm really glad you got to answer. I would imagine technology would really lead the way, for now at least, to keeping interactions even with those who are literally just a house or unit away. How has the community coped with joblessness (if ever that happened)? I was also wondering how you would engage people who live in high rise developments, or if co-living would actually work in that scale? Again thank you for taking notice, and may we all be safe and well. :)
I don't think you need co-housing to help and care for each other, it all depends who and how the people are, you can rent anywhere and help each other too, I have a big property and rent out rooms and hopefully soon fix up tiny house and rent out camper and camping
This is true, but it can be really really hard to try to connect with neighbours when the neighbourhood/condo/apartment complex/block doesn't have a culture for it. With stuff like co-housing you are basically saying "hey, we want to be present for each other" clearly and up front so that people who move there are on board with it. Here in the Nordic countries, you rarely go beyond basic greetings and pleasantries with your neighbours in a lot of places, especially near or in cities.
I would hate this. I like living in my own house, with my husband, and a few cats. I am semi retired and sick of other people. forget co living. at my age, I want peace, quiet, and no interactions with neighbours. it might be good for young ppl, but not for me!

Lovely idea for the ones who have money. So far I have not found affordable cohousing options. If anyone knows of something please leave a comment.
Have you joined the cohousing list serv? Houses come up all the time for sale or rent Buying them once they are already built lowers the cost immensely.
True, most people who are homeless are that way because they can't afford the rents not because there is a housing shortage.
@@freeranger1677 I'm talking about more affordable houses for cohousing since that runs high. There are a few cohousing that are made for the homeless and more being developed .
I am currently exploring the idea of the use of co-housing for affordable housing needs. Any information you can share would be helpful. Thank you.

I'm sure it's fine. If anything they're probably doing better than the rest of us since they can stay in isolated pods of sanity.

Sounds like an HOA but even more intrusive. The Strickland “king of the hill” model is better than this 🤣

This is a despicable and dangerous idea - people already have the option to live together, this is all about FORCING people to cohabit, this is about destroying the individual's rights, otherwise WHY IS THERE A TALK ON IT? PEOPLE HAVE A CHOICE TO LIVE TOGETHER ALREADY.

She seems to be a very nice lady BUT. Some of her ideas are way out their pie in the sky stuff. My brother has a house with 5 bedrooms and he lives there alone except for when I descend upon him. This lady would suggest he turn his 5 car garage into homes for people. If he did turn it into housing it would cost renters 2,700 a month for the square footage and needed amenities they would get in his area. Hardly what I'd call affordable housing. Luckily he loves his cars and trucks. Doing all the stuff she suggests involves bringing strangers into your space. YUCK!
Oh Man, I'm 62 have 5 acres, chickens and cats and a huge garden. I have no need to have others live with me. I love living alone. I visit when need family and friends, have so many!. You have to be a friend or family member to have any. If you are not happy with yourself, you will never be happy. Commies would have you believe you cannot be happy if you are an individual or have much from all your hard work. If you need a pack or gang you are missing out on the most wonderful part of life-being able to love self and sustain without a need of others doing everything for you. I share all my extra with friends and family. This woman is nuts and so political and confused. She is using a communist belief of life instead of a regular supportive family. Brainwashing to make people lazy and jealous of success and wanting those who have more to just give to lazy unhappy people. Communism makes people slaves and NO incentive to become your best-but become just like the rest!
Is it that hard to believe that certain people desire different levels of social interaction? You people have the most absurd arguments. "Hey just because I enjoy living a life of solitude and personal sustainability means you should too!" At the end of the day is it not their FREEDOM to use their privately owned property to do what they please with? Or are freedoms only allowed when they align with your ideas of how they should be exercised? Ironic....

The American dream is "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness" and the freedom to choose how you live that out not necessarily a big house. Don't fall for the vailed communism in this woman's speech.
How on earth is one's choice to engage in private property ownership in an organization that facilitates shared spaces and experiences (similar to how an apartment complex has a shared gym, pool, club house, etc) veiled communism? Your attempt at some sort of "educated" criticism is laughable.
