I used to get so excited when I saw Steve Martin was going to be on the Tonight Show. Watching these videos now I appreciate even more how original he was.

One of the best magic tricks performed by one of the funniest, talented guys ever.
Steve has worked with magic for a very long time.
I assume you know how it was done. It's more entertainment than anything but it's world-class entertainment at its finest.

As a little kid I used to watch him do magic in the Disneyland magic shop on Main Street. If he wasn’t there I looked for him playing banjo in the the park somewhere.
Thank your dad for showing you the tapes. Them was the days of show biz.
@@memowilliam9889 I was at Knott's Bery Farm and Disneyland in Aug 1965. I found out way later that he worked there. Just toom young to know or remember.
I saw the origional and I am 69 yrs old. We have forgotten what real humor is, today. We have forgotten how to push the envelope into pure laughter. So sad.

I love the wolf whistles from the audience when the dark haired bombshell walks out. That and Steve Martin’s perfect delivery made me laugh.
I was a big Steve Martin fan.and still am. I had all of his albums. seen all of his movies and would do his jokes for other people. The guy is such an incredible talent.

Apparently, this was a skit Steve Martin only did at private parties, until Carson asked him to do the full skit on the show.
Spoiler Alert - his left 'arm' is a prosthetic - hence his free arm inside his jacket 'performing' each moment in the act - still fucking hysterical

My dad bought me the Best of Johnny Carson boxed set in high school and I spent a week watching all the tapes. This clip made me laugh the most. Jimmy Stewart reading a poem about his dog made me cry the most.
American audiences are just great. They know how to get involved, encourage the best from a guest and have a great time. Terrific stuff.
Steve Martin at the very pinnacle of his comedic powers. This was such a great mini-break from the world's nitwittery and darkness.
Johnny Carson's reactions were so real, authentic - not contrived. He was truly a great entertainer.

What an epic based opinion. Everything sucks things were better back then! Screw all those talented writers who worked on the same shows you say are amazing but I guess are horrible when they’re writing for someone who doesn’t have the same political views as you or whatever. Let me guess they all talk about trump too much or something, even though he isn’t president so nobody talks about him on late night anymore

You said it Eric. That was better entertainment then the crap on now. But people had higher standards of entertainment back then. Now those that think the current late night shows are funny, not many brain cells or think Biden is the best President and will smith is ok to slap people, the list could go on. Take away here Johnny Carson was king back then and in syndication, he still is🏆
Steve Martin has always understood the importance of absurdity in comedy. This is something that so many modern comics simply don't get.
Combine this with Carson, who had a real knack for presenting true talent to his audiences and perhaps most importantly while Johnny could stand toe to toe with the greatest he also knew when to get out of the way and let brilliance shine.

God there's so many opportunities for this illusion to be broken, but he pulls it off. He builds the character's body language and personality around the limitations that the illusion sets.
Yes. The facial expressions sell it. Few are the comedic folk who could pull this off. In fact, the only folk that come predominantly to mind, at least at the moment, are silent movie actors.
And then has Carson bring him back out for a bow so he can use his left hand as if it hadn't been a fake one during the routine.

@@edkretchmer2167 I don't think the cig was actually lit. I think there was a powder on the cig. When he put it to his lips he brushed the powder off with his fingers (twice). No smoke actually comes from the cig (or from his mouth). The powder is then thrown from his fly as well, after he pretends to take a puff. It's extremely well done; if it weren't for the pause button I never would've figured it out.

I was sleep deprived in junior high school and high school because I would stay up and watch Johnny Carson with my dad. I’m 71 years old now… And I’m still deprived of sleep.😮

Steve Martin used to do this routine only at Carson's place when he was there for poker night. Johnny asked Martin if he would do it for him on tv during his final week and Martin agreed. Behold the brilliance of truly inventive comedy.
Imagine what else they did at poker night?
He did it at several private charities and 7 days straight in Atlantic City well before Carson

I am a big big Steve Martin fan But this one is my absolute favorite. There are many comic magicians, but he plays a serious magician which makes it all the funnier!!!!!

I'd agree with the latter.... the actors and actresses of today, with very few exceptions, are more about self gratification than they are about providing any real entertainment.

They had movie stars in those days. Now we just have famous people.
Famous people think that, because they are famous, that people want to hear their political opinions among other things.
In the Carson era, they almost never expressed an opinion on any subject, and certainly not on politics. (Carson himself may've been a Democrat, but he never said anything about it.)
What they were was a fantasy. Their lives were a mystery to a great extent and their job was bigger than life.
On top of all that, Steve Martin was perhaps the greatest entertainer in modern times.
Now days they walk on eggshells not to offend the snowflakes (pc shitlords) acrors have lost their personality and opinions, nothing more than cardboard cutouts

I watched the original show of this and LMAO. And had no idea how he did it. Then when you tube came along I found it on here and watched and watched till I caught on. It is still hilarious.

@@kyledavidwalsh Look closely, you'll see the left side of his frame is just a bit wider than it should be. The left arm you see is fake, and his real left arm is bringing things out through his fly

I dare anyone to try to find a genius comedy Act of that caliber of that brilliance innovative spirit and dead on target execution in that performance. Just classic and I'm surprised I never saw it before today being such a big fan of both of them and The Tonight Show. Going to be watching this a lot in the future to cheer me up when needed

Steve Martin worked in the Main Street magic shop at Disneyland when he was in his teens (he started working there in 1955, the year Disneyland opened, as a little newspaper boy), so he still knows how to use all the trick props like phony cigarettes, invisible string gags, etc.
I went to Disneyland a lot in the 60s and 70s as a kid. My Dad hung out with Walt, smoking like fiends. I'm pretty sure I remember Steve working in a store in the castle. I was probably about 13 and remember this guy with a real snarky attitude, but still dang funny. I wish my memory was better.
But I'll take a wild guess he didn't pull anything out of his fly at Disneyland... :)
I also remember a very young Michael Jackson and his brothers performing at the courtyard of the Carnation ice cream plaza at the end of Main Street.

The mini Pavarotti was a stroke of genius in and of itself. Theatre of the absurd manifest into pure comedy.
It’s amazing to me how far back i go with this show. It stems from my dad working a second job up In Chicago during the sixties. So, the only time I could see him was late night. I’d sit and watch Johnny Carson with him. Then after that, rarely did I miss him. One of my favorite skits was, “ the edge of wetness “. Classic stuff!!!
Steve Martin is brilliant. The Great Flydini and The Great Thompsoni. Two of the greatest acts ever.

That was near the end of Carson's run. I remember when Martin sat down, he just silently stared at Carson. After a moment, Carson asked, "What?" Martin, looking sad, said, "Don't go."
Oh my goodness!!! How many entertainers were truly inspired by Johnny. If you hear any of the older comics talking they all pay homage to Carson. What a legacy. These late night hosts nowadays should be ashamed of what they lowered the bar to. There is not one that can make me laugh. All their shows have turned into "we hate president Trump" BS. Johnny always had a little something every night about our politicians of the day but it was something everyone could laugh at. It wasn't hate-filled and venomous. It is just really sad what tv has turned into.

Carson wasn't broadcasting during a time when Fox 'News' has its OWN lawyers arguing in court that no 'reasonable person' should take what their broadcasters say seriously (McDougal v. Fox News Network), as they work so hard to misinform the public----if Carson was on today, I am sure he would be fighting the good fight.

@@43cjd I agree with all you've written. Johnny didn't tote water for any political party, nor did he push an agenda. He was able to invite all sorts of people and make them at home on his show. He never lost sight of the goal, which was to make people laugh. That made him the type of person that we are sorely missing in this slightly insane world today. That made him a professional.

Comedy Never gets better than that bit. First Time I've seen it although born in the 40's and one of all of America that watched Carson's show without fail and hell Ed Sullivan and the beginning of TV for that matter. Thanks a lot of this one I missed and I see the first comment is 10 years ago so I wonder why I was fed this one but I'm glad I clicked it.

I cried when he retired in '92. He is the late night talk show GOAT.
I remember thinking back then that it was probably time for him to retire back then. Things seemed a little stale. But man I'd give anything for him to be back on the air now.
My understanding is that this routine is something Steve worked up to do at friends' parties, just for fun. Johnny convinced Steve to perform it on the show.
Steve performed almost the same routine in the UK 5 years earlier (1987) and states it is the first time he has performed it on television.

I was such a huge Steve Martin fan and always loved Carson, but I have never seen the Flydini act until this very moment.
I guess 1992 was a very busy year for me, but this proves 2 things to me;
