    Oooooh...everyone back my kickstarter campaign for a revolutionary new 3d printer! It has 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, in a really nice neighbourhood....er...I mean....its an amazing printer with never before seen features! Upgrade to the premium version to get an additional 2 bedroom guest house....er....I mean even more features....print food, money, metal, crypotocurrencies....

    Maker's Muse , I’m not collecting money but I am going to be designing a 3D printer, literally like never before. I’m starting with making my own motors, so different than a servo and a stepper but better than both. And another feature I can’t mention here that is a game changer, my motors are going to give me less than micron accuracy with fast speed. I want your input... if your willing to keep quiet and not take my ideas

      @@Reach3DPrinters been put off on the back burner (lol) I have a very inventive mind, most of my ideas I never carry out cause of no free time and or the money and time to do it. But I never forget my ideas....
      I'm a truck driver,... drive,sleep,drive,sleep...
      No free time. If certain things happen in the stock market and I can do very well off of dividends and not have to work anymore, I'm going to build all my ideas.
      Oh also outside of my motor design,
      I thought of a printer / cnc mill design that has no linear parts, everything is radial movement. And all the parts are flawlessly symmetrical. Meaning like a slice of a pie, do you want 3,4,8,32 etc slices bolted together, less slices bolted together means larger prints/mills and more precision accuracy.
      ... But whats im getting at is a "parent" can create a "child" much larger than it's self.

      @@davidprock904 I bought some NIO a couple months ago... it just started taking off this last couple weeks. My TSLA stock is also doing pretty well this last year!
      The future of locomotion is electric. These companies will take control of the auto market within 5-10 years. If you can throw a few hundred into NIO, I would recommend it while its still fairly cheap, but of course, thats the stock market, no guarantees. Tesla is a pretty safe semi long term bet though.

    I enjoyed this video! I remember many of those campaigns. I have many times been tempted to "pledge", but my gut feeling and available money has stopped me. Also since many of the campaigns ships after a year or more, their sellingpoints and features might be outdated when, and if, they hit the market.

    I’ve been burnt far too many times on kickstarter and indiegogo. I’ll never back another item on either of those services. Weird thing is, I actually got the 101 hero, and that was one of the few things I thought I would never get!

    I picked up the Trinus, in part from your positive review. It was my first (and so far only) 3D printer. It works, I can print but I found reliability to be a big issue, which is another thing that you can't gauge for a Kickstarter campaign. Still, it was cheap enough to push me over the edge and it's been enough to get my feet wet so overall pretty happy :)

  • @pa2797

    Heck Angus, as a Cetus3D MK1 owner I didn't get burnt at all and I don't think I've come across any Cetus owner that feels that they were burnt. The "problem" that you mention with the MK1 Cetus had various solutions via the community and eventually by Cetus who offerred a low-cost fix kit to the arm lowering on power down. MK1 Cetus owners burnt? definitely not! I am still so pleased with my MK1 Cetus. I'm quite shocked that you'd describe Cetus KS backers as being burnt with what they received.

    • @MakersMuse
      @MakersMuse  6 років тому +8

      True, 'burnt' was an overstatement! The Cetus is still one of the best budget machines i've tested, period. The MK2 is substantially improved however.

    • @jonathananderson3725
      @jonathananderson3725 6 років тому +1

      I would also say while I love my Cetus I've since scrapped their CPU on my MK1 and replaced it with tinyfabs replacement smoothie based CPU. And its fantastic. My main complaints about the Cetus MK1 in stock form still relates to the MK2 and its honestly the Up/Cetus Software and slicer its so limited and constricting it makes the printer less fun to use. You can use Simplify 3d with a stock Cetus but its not a easy process for newbies and people just starting to 3d print so I would recommend if anyone who already owns a 3d printer get a Cetus they upgrade to the Tinyfab CPU as well.

    • @pa2797
      @pa2797 6 років тому

      jonathan anderson I think a lot of people are perfectly happy with the stock Cetus and the Cetus slicer. It’s perfectly possible to use other slicers without the tiny fab unit. I’m not knocking the excellent tinyfab option, but that’s what it is - an option for some people - definitely not an essential update.

      It's a shame, I actually really like the Tiko....not because of how it prints.....no...it's just....awful. Aesthetically, it's gorgeous. It's surprisingly low power and the fact that it had/has/had Wi-Fi...was pretty neat! I tore mine apart and disappointingly it uses a Texas Instruments chip which, to my knowledge, uses proprietary software you must purchase to reprogram it...so it's cheaper to make another board for it...legitimately. (I am actually doing that by the way, based off of the Duet Wi-Fi 1.03 so it maintains as much of the original aesthetics as I can manage.)
      I am a CNC Machinist and a passionate maker, I'm going to try to fix mine. I'm going to see if I can give it what it should have had out of the box reusing as much as possible yet quickly scrapping parts if they are not sufficient. If I'm successful I'll release all the files so those that hung onto those can fix their own...it's mainly a challenge to me. Wtf is wrong with me? 😆🤓

      low power is generally not a good thing for 3d printers

    • @kevin_delaney
      @kevin_delaney 6 років тому +1

      hansdietrich83 That's not completely true because it entirely depends on [why] it is low power. Is it low power because the motors are more efficient? Is the print environment well insulated?? A printer using a ton of power does not equal a good or high-quality machine, it could be because the components are terrible and there is a lot of friction to overcome when the machine wants to move. Not sure you thought about that. If a computer sucks up a ton of power, is that good? No, not particularly. It depends on a lot of variables.

      There is a good video by @JAT.MN in which he analyzes why the tiko3d campaign failed.
      What was also bad in the last time were the several mk42 campaigns.
      The GB located campaign was bad because the bed were mostly unusable because they were too much bent.
      (when you got one)
      And the one from @jjacobsensnake were produced but (looks like mostly) not sent out.
      And he stopped communicating with the backer when he got all the money.
      There actually some guy who want to make quick cash:
      www.indiegogo.com/projects/origin-prusa-i3-mk2s-clone/x/8072847#/
      (he had also a mk42 heatbed campaign before)
      Those campaigns don't get any support because the trust in crowdfunding is gone.
      At the early mk42 campaigns there was no source for the mk42 but now you can get it from orballo printing in spain with a really good quality for 60€ -> AND YOU GET IT ...

    Hope to receive my Snapmaker within now and a week time. I always had the same vision, I never bought the Snapmaker, but donated them and got a Snapmaker as a reward. That's what it is. And being supportive to a company would help better than the no-brain complainers expecting premium stuff.. A lot of blabla but totally 0% brain to think they've supported a new company instead of wanting and expecting the BMW under all 3D printers. I've a good relationship with people behind Snapmaker, I believe they are one of the few companies that could survive the 1st generation wave into the next generations.

    I spent $1900 on the 2015 Kickstarter for the Glowforge laser cutter. It was supposed to ship in summer 2016. I just got it about a month ago December 2017 after many many delays. I'm glad I did it now, but it I knew it was going to be over a year late, I probably would not have bought it. That being said it is a great tool and it mostly does what they promised, although the instruction book is almost nonexistent. They seem to be counting on people in the forms to substitute for documention.

    I've had my Trinus for about a year now, and I'm still happy with my purchase. I've used it for printing Christmas presents, knick-knacks, and normal printables. For the price, the build volume is quite small, but as long as you are inventive you can get around that limitation. The max speed is about 70mm/s, which is a lot slower than belt driven printers.
    The main redeeming quality for the Trinus, in my opinion, is the precision and durability of the metal parts. Prints rarely fail and if they do, its due to user error and not any quirk of the printer itself. I'd love if they came out with a size expansion for the print volume, and due to the modular nature of the printer this would be quite easy to achieve.
    Looking back I would have bought an Anet A8 or something a bit faster, but the Trinus is great for printing things while you are away at work, and the metal construction is less of a fire hazard.

    I spent around $700 on the Thingybot Delta on Kickstarter several years ago. Shortly after he announced that units would soon be shipping, he went silent. Backers got nothing but an apology years later about how everything went wrong. And more silence.
    However, some backers noticed how his mothers Facebook page showed him going on a cruise to Hawaii.
    Oh well. I’ve since gone on to buy an M3D Micro+, which was nothing but a toy; an Anet A8, which was a challenging kit that brought out the tinkerer in me and gives me phenomenal prints; and an Anycubic I3Mega-S, which is a great reliable workhorse.

    I've got a couple unusual 3D Printers, one that was actually an initial Kickstarter. I have a Dobot MOOZ 2. Now I did not buy it during the Kickstarter campaign but a few years afterwards buying on Amazon. Amazon had these for around $300 for a small build plate but it does 3D Printing, Laser and CNC. I do have to tell you that I have compared prints vs. a neighbor that has an original PRUSA and he is shocked that I get better prints than he does at similar CURA settings. So, for $300 I made out well. AND to top it off, not sure if I got a refurbished unit BUT I bought a second one that I have set up exclusively for Laser work, the second one I got for $189. Now the second machine I have is a Sindoh. I am not a fan of the autoloading cassette and I have had problems with that but, fortunately, they now allow for open source filament and, as long as you are careful loading the filament and you don't buy the cheapest filament the machine works well. I have had filament jams in the extruder and that requires open heart surgery where the Dobot MOOZ is much easer as all you have to do is open the print module vs. opening the side panel, removing the extruder gear assembly and then, finally clearing the filament jam. I do not have other Boden product but, I assume that filament jams are a pain in those machines as well. The Dobot is much easier when jams occur. A similar machine seems to be the snapmaker but they are very costly so I went with the Dobot.

    It's still baffling to see so many people still backing kickstarter campaigns that are over-hyped but have obvious red flags. I mean, failed kickstarter campaigns have been popping out for years now... surely people should know better. A bit of patience, healthy skepticism, and online research could have saved the money they now lost to these campaigns.

They also don't pay attention to the fact that KS is not a "buy it", it's a "donate your funds and perhaps get a return".

    Cobblebot also deserves a mention for the amount of people they screwed over, not only in the first kickstarter they had but also in the 2nd one, unhappy backers from the first campaign posted warnings to others on the 2nd kickstarter that the company hadn't fulfilled the original orders and kickstarter actually removed most of the warnings and barred users from posting complaints, a few months later backers from the 2nd kickstarter got to experience it all over again for themselves. Never used kickstarted again sice they were clearly more intereseted in making money than protecting the publics interest

    Angus, I backed the Craftbot back in 2014, it finally got to me in Jan 2015, about 5 months after their estimated shipping date. Which, in all honesty, is pretty amazing. Since the printer they shipped, despite some initial issues, turned out to be a fantastic work horse. I am still using it today (it's printing right now!) But back then I had different expectation of Kickstarter projects. Nowadays, if a crowdfunded hardware campaign delivers within 1 year of their estimated date, I think that's on time. And this is frankly the problem with crowdfunding 3D printer campaigns these days. Unlike back in 2014, there are so many fantastic printers available that won't break the bank these days. Also, since most hardware campaigns are years late in delivery, chances are, whatever nifty feature that was unique in some campaign video is probably going to be standard feature by the time you actually get your campaign reward. So yeah, I totally agree that people should think of crowdfunding as just a donation.

    I backed the Printrbot Kickstarter back in 2011 for the $800 lasercut Printrbot Plus model, and while the company seems to still exist and is still doing stuff, it pretty much permanently soured me to the Printrbot company and Kickstarter.
    The project ran late, a lot of people started whining in the comment section until one guy threatened to commit credit card fraud if he didn't get his printer right away, so they sent it to him. The printer itself was wobbly, the Z-axis brackets were wrong and caused nasty layer rippling in prints, and the extrusion gear I got was one of their resin molded ones, which was so catastrophically warped that it couldn't even drive the extruder. The Stepper drivers they provided were the wrong kind for the motors, which led to my extrusion motor getting burned out. And I will never back another Kickstarter project because of my experience.
    I eventually sent the whole mess to some poor schmuck on Twitter who volunteered to pay me cost of shipping and replaced it with a $300 Maker Select V2, which, after some minor tinkering and calibration, has worked flawlessly for the last 2 years.

    The TIKO delta 3d printer was the first project I've backed that failed to ship (at least, it didn't ship to me; as far as I know only a handful of backers got anything). I've backed a LOT of Kickstarters, and that was the only 3d printer I tried. I almost backed the Snapmaker 3d printer/CNC/Laser engraver, but then I discovered the CR-10.

    To hell with crowd funding and early access games. A person or company with zero history of success or expertise just announces that they will make something and everybody donates with no guarantee of delivery, virtually no legal rights, and no enforcable timetable of delivery. Why did consumers EVER get behind this method of purchase? Let the businesses do it the old fashioned way; raise the capital from sceptical investors, develop the product, and sell it the normal way. Anything else is madness from a purchaser perspective.

    I think for cheap printers, a kit one is the way to go. I got an Anet A8 on a site when it was on sale for $133 (and no, surprisingly it wasn't a scam) and it prints really well. There are probably other great kit ones out there, too. They also have a much bigger printing area than those $300 "toy" ones.

    Well the OLO/ONO is what brought me to your channel (to correct you on some things you got wrong in a late night recording/uploading session, which you acknowledged) but after checking out some of your other videos I decided at the last miute to bail on that project and trust someone I didn't know but who seemed to know better (so, THANKS). I've been a subscriber to your channel since then and I watch 'almost' all of your new videos as well as refer back to your old ones every now and then. I even bought your eBook.
    As for Kickstarter 3D printers. I've backed 4 to the end now (as in actually paid the cash and not bailed before the campaign ended) and received 3 of them (the 4th being Tiko). None have been any good. There's so much available now I don't see why anyone would bother with KS for this type of product anymore. The risk of loosing your $$'s completely or getting a dud is way too high.

    I backed the Tiko because at the time it was ridiculously cheap (I'd recently paid $550 for a CTC-3D dual extruder.) but by the time it finally shipped (to _some_ backers, me included) the same CTC printer was only $300 so that price on the Tiko wasn't looking so hot anymore. I've backed 30 projects on Kickstarter, and 3 on IndieGoGo, and the Tiko is the only project I've not been happy with. When it comes to crowdfunding, you just gotta pick your battles. The Tiko was the only thing I ever really 'took a chance' on.

  • @DoRC

    People make the mistake of thinking the can get a cool product at a great price by backing. But as you said the chances of receiving what was "promised" in a timely manner and in good working long lasting order are pretty abismal compared to the normal purchasing experience. Basically the campaigners want to try something, usually that they have never done before, and they want your money to fund that experiment. I think there would be a lot fewer successful campaigns if people realized that. Just looking at the comments on failed projects shows how the perception and reality of these things simply don't mesh.

    Kickstarted board games have been a good experience for me, though they fell into the same part, they had a proto type and were testing suppliers of the cards before even creating the campaign. I knew it was a donation and I keep seeing them at the conference so it seems like they are still making games which is cool. What they are doing is also a bit harder to have fail to be honest. Also pre orders, i am talking about actual preorders ie video games are a terrible idea.

    There's so many Kickstarters and Indiegogo campaigns where the creator makes a decent product, but instead of fulfilling the backer perks, start selling retail on Tindie or other such sites. They'll cheerfully ship to retail purchasers, and even BRAG about how many sales they've fulfilled, with dozens or hundreds of backers swinging in the wind, getting no responses from the creator besides a virtual _digitus impudicus._

    It's not worth backing a cheap 3D printer campaign when they are already out there. Back in December 2016 I picked up a da Vinci Mini for £137 on a special from Ebuyer. That's a proper printer with good support, for a cost that's not really worth trying to beat. Just keep an eye out for special offers if you want a cheap 3D printer.

  • @shyamdevadas6099

    Another great video, Angus. You're analysis of Kickstarter (and other crowdfunded organizations) is dead-on. Kickstarter is essentially a site for speculators and first adopters. Basically the same dynamic as the stock market. Nothing is wrong with participating on it, as long as you understand that there is risk. Some of this risk is catastrophic (like the implosions that Angus alludes to). In other cases, they are simply delays. In my case, I've been influenced to buy 3 things that derived from Kickstarter campaigns. I bought the Kodama Trinus after the campaign (when it was in regular production). In that case, I didn't share the risk that the early funders did, but I benefited greatly from their early support to the Kodama. (I love my Trinus.) On another Kickstarter campaign, I got off of the sidelines and was an early funder for the Glowforge. I felt confident enough that the product was viable that I stuck in there, even after the year-plus delays. (Supposedly, it ships this month and early bugs seem to have been worked out. Also, no other company has come along with a better product.) Finally, I was an IndieGogo funder for the Eve V computer. It was definitely higher risk, but again their product seemed viable. But, to offset the risk, I held back most of my money. Now, the units are shipping and the reviews are generally good. So, all in all my experiences have been good. But, the risk has always been there. In each case, I calculated the upside potential of my decision. I was also able to absorb the loss, if any of these campaigns went bust. This is a decision that everyone needs to make for themselves.

    An interesting follow up to this video and to give the perspective of the people who ran one would be to have a chat with the folks at Eora scanners as they have now delivered the bulk of their units, about 18 months late. As they are reasonably local to you it would be too hard to achieve.

      lol corporation : PLA (polylactic acid) is a biodegradable polymer, often made from corn plants (or cotton plants, if I'm not mistaken). But even if it's not coming from the "standard process" of polymerisation of a petroleum base, PLA is classified as a plastic, by definition.
      In fact, the guy in the comment, Angus is referring to, has clearly no idea what a plastic is...
