  • I was given some unused pieces of 24mm thick Oak veneer plywood by Plytech and they asked if I could make a piece of furniture with it to put on display.
    The oak veneer is really nice so I wanted to keep the design really clean and simple and thought I would try hairpin legs for the first time. I think they complimented the plywood really well and adds to the overall aesthetic of the piece.

      Thanks! Luckily no. I thought it might because it really soaked into the grain. but after sanding it down it didn't show up with the varnish

    I like it!! All from plywood too. Very cool. Nice job cutting the 45 degree angles on a small table saw. I didn’t see any burn marks on the edges.
    Btw, what type of plywood is that? Is it domestic or import?

    Great build. I've had a mixed past using plywood for furniture. You can only lightly sand and any dings or dents have to be filled in a way as to not throw off stain or finish. Plywood, while cheap, is unforgiving of a single mistake or defect in the wood.

    what's the product you're squirting into the gap? CA glue? Something else?

    • @TheOffcut
      @TheOffcut  6 років тому +8

      Yup it is CA glue. Its quite simple; i sand down the edge and let the sawdust fill the gaps. The CA glue absorbs into the sawdust creating a nice filler. Its much quicker and easier than mixing sawdust with epoxy or wood glue. Its so thin that it gets into every little gap and dries really quick.

    Is there any concern in the strength of the mitre in the same way there would be with solid wood? Or are end grain gluing issues not relevant with plywood? I would have thought biscuits wouldn't be strong enough if so?

    • @TheOffcut
      @TheOffcut  6 років тому +2

      I thought there would be and I was planning to reinforce the mitre joints somehow but after the glue up it felt really strong and being 25mm thick plywood there was plenty of surface area for the glue. The biscuits were mainly there to help align the pieces during glue up.

    • @markspears1167
      @markspears1167 6 років тому

      tanc sade I see your question a lot asking about the strength of biscuits. As a cabinet builder I used biscuits a lot when they first came out and off and on over the years and on occasion I still do. I have never had any issues with biscuits what so ever. I have found them to be very strong. I have read where some people say their not strong but I highly disagree. Cheers, Sir!

    • @TheOffcut
      @TheOffcut  3 роки тому

      This ply has a pretty thick oak veneer on it so I wasn't worried about sanding through it. Usually the cheaper stuff is paper thin and would probably sand straight through the veneer
