So you basically did a video essay on a music, fashion, cinematography, film, direction, choreography, history, etc. and tied it all together in an entertaining cohesive package that resembles the very rock band your talking about. Excellent work! 👏
I remember watching this gig and it made me an even bigger fan of The Strokes. As a brit and the death of Britpop we were waiting on something happening that wasnt fully taken over by the industry. Us brits seem to take these cool American bands to our hearts before America does. Kings Of Leon are another example of this as they had 6 consecutivenumber 1 albums over here. The Strokes came to Britain and absolutely conquered it and birthed bands such as Arctic Monkeys and changed The Libertines sound after they heard The Modern Age e.p. The Strokes $ 2 Dollar bill gig is just one of these you had to be 5here moments in Rock N Roll. And as a live act they capture what they put on record. Not many bands sound this good live.
The Strokes took Kings of Leon to open for them on some spots on their first ever tours. The bassist of KoL stated his bass style is derived from Nikolai, being a big inspiration in his beginnings.
The 2 dollar bill performance is so good because it was on MTV when they actually played music on it all the time, they gave us access to a full rock and roll concert and the strokes were brand new at the time and the lofi New York vibe was badass for 2001-2002
The way you speak and the tone of your voice gives me such “early 2000’s alternative radio station host” like the ones you see in movies or stuff but it’s really endearing and adds so much to this entire video. I can listen to you talk about The Strokes, about music all day long
julian’s dad owned a model management agency and apparently when they were just starting out playing in clubs julian would ask some of the models to come to the show to attract bigger crowds
Firstly, great video! Can I call it a mini documentary? Secondly, I don't think many people realize how important The Strokes were in the early 2000s. In fact, they reshaped the rock scene because, as we all know, at that stage, it didn't have much going on. They still produce great music, and to me, the fact that they never let fame get to them makes them even cooler. They're still a tight band, making good records, continuing to inspire and gain new fans. I'm 39 now, and I still want to be part of The Strokes like I did when I was 17, lol.
thank you so much for this video, this was exactly the kind of niche strokes content I needed, with all the in transit and other references, but also the way we can tell how much you like the band this was so well put together and you put so much work into this for a great end result, and finishing the video with the human sadness outro could actually make me cry thank you again! oh and I didn't know that Roman Coppola directed these music videos, Sofia Coppola also used the song what ever happened in her movie Marie Antoinette so I assumed she was a fan but now that makes a lot of sense
The first time I saw The Strokes, they played pretty much every song they had, which was the first record. I saw them the following year when they put out their second record, and the songs were so short that they played almost every song for both records, minus maybe 3 songs total.
I HAVE SAID THIS FOR YEARS FOR ALL THE SAME REASONS. TUBULAR. NOW I CAN SEND THIS TO PEOPLE AND BE ANNOYING ABOUT HOW RIGHT I AM NOW THAT I HAVE THIS TO BACK ME UP. THAAAANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS. This concert was and is my reference point for everytime i live a moment in life and say 'that was rock and roll'.
hey i loved this video essay! i love the strokes a lot, and i often find myself rewatching this performance. great video man! also whats the song in the end? i know its human sadness (a version of it) by the voidz but it's more chill so it sounds cool
I was waiting for someone to make this video. Been in love with this concert since the first time i saw it on youtube a couple years ago. also great vid love your editing style and voiceover narration.
Dude this video is awesome! I love the put togetherness of it and your fun voice! I love this band and this concert so so much so it was great to learn a bunch :D
This was an absolutely incredible, mind-blowing video. Thank you for sharing this with the world and for creating such beautiful content. HUGE hug to you!!!
I honestly never knew too much about the strokes, I just loved their music and that was it, after like 6 years of listening I'm learning more thus here I am, I had no idea Julian was such a perfectionist and that's something I oddly relate too much about. I do photography and I nitpick every little tiny pixel in my art to the point I will literally be the only person to know anything changed at all yet I just HAD to change/fix something it'd bug the shit outta me. I get comments from family members and others saying I'm such a perfectionist but it's just like... I gotta be, I wanna be perfect. Julian having that but knowing not everything can ever be in the world is just too relatable, everyone may love their music and call it perfect but he knows it's not still, but that's only him.
This video rules… you nailed it. This show totally inspires my music, but it also inspired like every single band after it…. The strokes came, saw, conquered, and ruined it for everybody else!
Mate this is so good! Have you seen the Oxygen festival live version of Hard To Explain? Another incredibly shot Strokes live video, would highly recommend!
My first tattoo at 18 (I was born '96) was the strokes magna logo because I watched this one day and it changed my life forever. I'm 28 now and on any bad day, I can watch the 2 dollar bill concert and it will immediately hype me up and heal me. From being given rock album of the year in 2023, they will be eligible for rock n roll hall of fame in 2026. If it happens I will loose my shit and probably get another strokes tattoo a decade later. Easily thee best rock band of my generation, and I don't wanna hear any lip about it.
So, is that possibly the best of all the time? Surely it's the best of them, because I've never saw any other so good. Their live presentations aren't so good on average. But that one was so good that some parts became video clips.
i hope for humanity's sake that they mean its the greatest STROKES performance. They're great and have a handful of truly great songs, but they aren't even on the radar when it comes to legendary live shows.
The concert after the nirvana one in the intro sounds and looks really cool, what's the name of the band? Also, really cool video! This concert really feels like it's perfect It really does look like they were trying too hard and not trying at all at the same time As soon as i started to think about it, you instantly and clearly conveyed that idea! It was like you read my mind
One of the best performances think it really captures their sound and stage presence very well, and having people around them was great different of course, the nod to Elvis too and their clothing style Nick looks too fuckin cool truly one of the best early 00s bands
and I thought I was the only one obsessed with that concert lmao
there's many of us, i love playing nick's part during the whole concert
LOL SO RELATABLE
me too
I remember seeing that when it aired for the first time. It was badass.
Me too!
Something tells me that this guy is a Strokes fan.
As I once saw in some comment section: The thinnest legs in the music industry lmao
i saw that comment to, its so funny haha
The Horrors
Lmao
This show really needs to be released on vinyl and CD. Why does this band not have an official live album? This is it!
It would sound exactly the same as the original record😂
I dont know, is this it?
@@giggityguns123😂😂
They almost did around the time of Room on Fire, but the sound quality made the band decide against releasing it.
don't they have live in Iceland?
So you basically did a video essay on a music, fashion, cinematography, film, direction, choreography, history, etc. and tied it all together in an entertaining cohesive package that resembles the very rock band your talking about. Excellent work! 👏
feels like julian casablancas hosting a podacst video about his 2$ concert
Another point: it didn't hurt at all that this is one of the tallest bands around. Three of them are well over 6 feet.
This was possibly the last time I can remember MTV doing something cool that I was looking forward to.
MTV was already barely playing music at this point.
It was MTV2, right?
It’s been 3 years and i can never stop playing that concert dude…
The way you speak and the tone of your voice gives me such “early 2000’s alternative radio station host” like the ones you see in movies or stuff but it’s really endearing and adds so much to this entire video. I can listen to you talk about The Strokes, about music all day long
closing the video with human sadness demo. perfect💋
Yes!!!!! That outro (I mean the whole song) is a masterpiece😢
youve got such a great presenter’s voice its so nice to listen to
this is a fantastically accurate and well written video
The rumour was they hired some models for the front row
Make sense all the effort into the video you know they’re gonna hire models for the front
julian’s dad owned a model management agency and apparently when they were just starting out playing in clubs julian would ask some of the models to come to the show to attract bigger crowds
young smart artistic rich boys... they nailed it, revived R&R and in the mean time made one of the best albums in history
love your videos man, so much quality

This video is extremely well-done.
Amazing edit was surprised to see you didn't have a million subscribers already
incredible video. been obsessed with this concert for over a year. finally put into words everything that drew me in!! thanks man
thank you so much for this video, this was exactly the kind of niche strokes content I needed, with all the in transit and other references, but also the way we can tell how much you like the band
this was so well put together and you put so much work into this for a great end result, and finishing the video with the human sadness outro could actually make me cry
thank you again!

We need more of this dude!
this vid is killer- its made me actually watch the 2 dollar bill show through
Thanks for introducing me to this dude, loved hearing you talk about a show you clearly have a lot of love and passion for.
"This dude"?? WHICH dude?
The first time I saw The Strokes, they played pretty much every song they had, which was the first record. I saw them the following year when they put out their second record, and the songs were so short that they played almost every song for both records, minus maybe 3 songs total.
They're definitely on my must watch list! You Only Live Once (both versions) are just my top 3 songs ever.
AMAZING video with fantastic editing. Our favourite live performance of all time. Well done 👏
GREAT VIDEO !!! LOVED THE ENDING AND THE LITTLE FABRIZIO HASNT EATEN IN THREE HOURS REFERENCE FROM THE STROKES IN TRANSIT VIDEO
As a mega Strokes fan, you nailed it
The fact about Roman Coppola was mind-blowing. I can feel the history of music in it."
Man! I am so obsessed with everything related to THE STROKES.
This video is incredible, thank you
Dude this is such a good video, you should get a million views
as a strokes fan, thank you for your hard work! loved it
my guy you have done incredible work on this video, an absolutely pleasure to watch!
Your voiceover gives me major Stryker from "Burnout 3 Takedown" vibes. It's perfect for this video and gives it a nostalgic feeling for me.
For those unaware, Stryker is the radio host for the game's soundtrack. The DJ
@@JohnDoe-wz8kka man of taste i see
i love this video essay so much, its almost as iconic as the $2 bill. love it
what a video, just super well made and really fun to watch :>
Thanks for this! The live editing….faaaaak
Damn - this video is fking well done - intergalactic fool got what it takes to go big time 💯
I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on their subsequent albums.
this is actually insane, how did you find/where did you get footage of them in the command center. fuckin stellar video. i love this concert so much
man, you sound like you could be one of the strokes. great video, fucking love them!
You gotta make more videos like this, this is amazing.
awesome video, I thought I was the only one obsessed with this concert… I wish I was there to see it live
I HAVE SAID THIS FOR YEARS FOR ALL THE SAME REASONS. TUBULAR. NOW I CAN SEND THIS TO PEOPLE AND BE ANNOYING ABOUT HOW RIGHT I AM NOW THAT I HAVE THIS TO BACK ME UP. THAAAANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS. I've just realized about the MAGIC of Roman Coppola towards the fame of the Strokes. And it is after 22 years time.
THIS GUY GETS IT
This was an absolutely incredible, mind-blowing video. Thank you for sharing this with the world and for creating such beautiful content. HUGE hug to you!!!
Damn man, you did outstanding on this vid 👏🏻👏🏻
This is the intersection of all things I love. Thank you
I honestly never knew too much about the strokes, I just loved their music and that was it, after like 6 years of listening I'm learning more thus here I am, I had no idea Julian was such a perfectionist and that's something I oddly relate too much about. the in transit references are absolutely chefs kiss

Dude! Great video. What a concert.
Mate this is so good! Have you seen the Oxygen festival live version of Hard To Explain? Another incredibly shot Strokes live video, would highly recommend!
What an amazing video man. Appreciate all the work you’ve put in to get this perspective together. ❤
i cant belive you analized the clothes, this become my favorite video on the internet
seriously they should upload a live version on spotify, it sounds so much better than the original record.
Breathtaking concert, claps for the really good research tho, didnt know any of the Roman Coppola direction on that live

also I love how you broke down the strokes fandom in the end 💀
Crazy my first tattoo at 17 it's the strokes logo too
This video spoke what was on my mind. Thanks
The greatest performance of all time has to be Jimi Hendrix at The Monterrey Pop Festival 1967.
No cause the Strokes had ripped jeans
Love the analysis, it makes perfect sense
Fantastic video !
Really excellent.
This was truly entertaining
Whats the song in the final thoughts section
human sadness demo version
I was lucky to be there. The vibe was electric.
Great video! Loved it! It’s nice to hear someone pronounce “Hedi Slimane” right for once
Damn, beautifully done.
What a great video ! Love your content !

Wow, I’ve always been obsessed with this show. It’s mind blowing.
Man the writing on this is superb. Sure I could see someone criticize your obsession with The Strokes. But I’m obsessed too. So fuck yeah
3:50 You did NOT just cut hard to explain before the chorus 😨😱😭😭 the audacity
agreed, literally was so excited for that
please make more of these
This is really well narrated. 👏
Wow he's a lucky director having three or four other people helping him. Most live music directors have to do everything themselves. Even the best.
New to your channel. Strokes and $2 bill aside, great vid…well written, well produced, well narrated
I’d say Jimi Hendrix setting his guitar on fire at Monterrey in ‘67 and melting everyone’s brains and changing music forever is my pick.
i hope for humanity's sake that they mean its the greatest STROKES performance. They're great and have a handful of truly great songs, but they aren't even on the radar when it comes to legendary live shows.
Awesome video 💎💯
VERY WELL DONE... I watch $2 bill concert probably once a year
The concert after the nirvana one in the intro sounds and looks really cool, what's the name of the band?
Also, really cool video! This concert really feels like it's perfect
It really does look like they were trying too hard and not trying at all at the same time
As soon as i started to think about it, you instantly and clearly conveyed that idea!
It was like you read my mind
I have been saying this since I was in 8th grade back in 09. Good to finally have it confirmed 😩
Thank you so much for doing this! Great video. Greetings from Argentina.
One of the best performances think it really captures their sound and stage presence very well, and having people around them was great different of course, the nod to Elvis too and their clothing style Nick looks too fuckin cool truly one of the best early 00s bands
I'm so happy I watched your video =)
The final thoughts was epic.
what song is playing during that part?
"Stumbling around stylishly"
loved the video, which has about as much energy as The Strokes themselves 😅
I couldn’t even look in a mirror after I first saw this
