In Sri Lanka when you typically eat at a restaurant that serves and sells Tamil Ethnic food and need to order for a tea, one can order for a Plain Tea (that has black tea with sugar and no milk), Strong Tea (that has black tea with sugar and milk but has more concentrated black tea in the cup) and Light Tea (that has black tea with sugar and milk but has more concentrated milk in the cup) . Never attempt to ask for Chai as some in Sri Lanka may get offended as Chai being the term used in India in Hindi and is not a Sinhala or Tamil word and you can ask for Tea or " තේ in the Sinhala language" (Pronounced similar to the French word Thé for Tea.) and தேநீர் in Tamil.
Thank you for explaining the different kinds of tea that’s really helpful for when we come back 😊 But I have to disagree with you about people being offended and I think this is because Sri Lankans are so hospitable toward guests. Alan always asked for chai and never had an issue. In fact 1/3 of the places we visited in the north and east had chai masala. But even if they didn’t they’d ask if we wanted milk tea we’d take it. We only ate in local places and had fantastic experiences with everyone. It’s good to know the different names for tea so that we can use them properly in the south but from Colombo to Kandy everyone was so welcoming.
Ayngelina, your comment about Indonesia being or not being a SAARK country, reminds me of going on the ferry to Zanzibar. Same situation with foreigners paid double what locals did. I was with a GF from Zimbabwe. Quick to be as economically savvy as I could be. I requested two tickets, one Foreign and one local! 😂 Now I’m not telling you to do the same. And I would expect you to have much higher standards than myself. But I’m just telling you of my similar encounter. Be sure to keep our high reputation as Canadians intact!😂😂😂
It’s interesting because in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Philippines everyone assumed Alan was local. Oh also in India they thought he was southern. But no one does in Sri Lanka unless he had his helmet on, which is full face. We were actually pulled over twice and as soon as he took his helmet off to talk to police they let him go. It’s because his skin colour is similar but you can see the difference in his facial structure and especially his eyes, which is not like Sri Lankans. And actually here a lot of people assume he’s Thai.

The thing with the 10 times higher tourist price is that tourists from poorer parts of the world (poorer on average than Sri Lanka) like Africa and East Asia are forced to pay the same high price as tourists from the West, Middle East, Japan, China etc... who are so much richer than the rest of the world. I had this problem in Malaysia where all my money went to just a couple of tourist attractions and I was left with nothing. $30 for the Petronas may not be much for a Western tourist but is a significant amount for me.
