The Atlantic provinces, known for their tumultuous weather, lived up to their reputation this past Friday. The skies over Moncton, New Brunswick, were heavy with rain clouds, and the temperatures hovered around a brisk 10 degrees. Despite it being June, no one seemed up for a barbeque or cookout. But that didn't dampen the spirits of our regular globetrotters Stuart and Missy, who decided to continue their time-honoured family tradition - a Friday night feast of Fish and Chips.
Both Stuart and Missy hail from British families, which means their love for this classic meal runs deep. And the search for the perfect fish and chips led them to Skipper Jack's Maritime Restaurant, a renowned local spot on Mapleton Road in Moncton. The restaurant recently underwent renovations, adding a fully equipped fish market adjacent to the main dining area. Here, you can find a diverse selection of the freshest seafood, from live lobsters to Bay of Fundy scallops and many fish varieties.
Despite the dreary weather, Skipper Jack's was buzzing with energy. The aroma of deep-fried goodness filled the air, while the warmth inside provided a welcome respite from the cold, rainy evening. Stuart and Missy opted for the two-piece fish and chips. Although the restaurant does offer a three-piece option, our travelling pair felt the two-piece serving was ample to satiate their hunger without overwhelming their plates.
Served hot and crispy, the golden-brown battered haddock was flaky and delicious, perfectly complementing the bed of hand-cut fries. The chips were a sublime symphony of textures - crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, a testament to the deep-rooted British culinary tradition. The meal was completed with the quintessential side - mushy peas, bringing a sweet and earthy balance.
The fish and chips at Skipper Jack's did not disappoint. The duo relished every bite, and they felt a sense of nostalgia for their family tradition. The restaurant's ambiance, friendly staff, and standout fish and chips earned it an impressive 8.5 out of 10 scores from Missy and Stuart.
In conclusion, Skipper Jack's Maritime Restaurant is highly recommended if you're ever in Moncton and the weather is acting up or if it's a sunny day craving a classic. Skipper Jack's is worth dropping anchor for whether you're a fish and chips aficionado like Stuart and Missy or simply looking for a hearty meal.
