- The Supremes perform their 10th #1 hit "The Happening" live on May 22nd 1967 on The Tonight Show. This would be the last TV appearance to feature the original lineup of the group as only weeks later founder of the group Florence Ballard would be fired.
This performance features the original (and most popular) lineup of The Supremes:
From left to right:
Florence Ballard
Mary Wilson
Diana Ross
"The Happening" served as the theme song for the Columbia film of the same name. While the film flopped the single recorded by the famous female Motown trio who had already had 9 #1 hits prior to The Happening managed to top the charts again reaching #1 on the pop chart and #12 on the R&B.
"The Happening" was written by HDH (Holland-Dozier-Holland) who had written all The Supremes' prior hits and all their #1's up to 1967 (when they departed Motown). This was the last #1 single written by HDH and the last single released as "The Supremes" as between the released of "The Happening" and the group's next single "Reflections", founding member and soprano of the group Florence Ballard would be fired and replaced by Patti Labelle & The Bluebelles member Cindy Birdsong and the group's name would be changed to "Diana Ross & The Supremes". After the name and member change the group never managed to repeat or match the sucess they had racking up only 2 #1's as Diana Ross & The Supremes.
Writer(s): Holland-Dozier-Holland and Frank DeVol
Producer(s): Brian Holland & Lamont Dozier (of Holland-Dozier-Holland)
ENJOY!
Mary is killin' me (in a good way) with the I Dream of Jeannie ponytail! Work it!
I remember watchng The Supremes on this episode of The Tonight Show (R.I.P.Florence Ballard), and I am rather sure that all 3 ladies had set on the couch speaking to Mr. Carson (R.I.P.).
I LOVE when the new look they started rocking around this time - such a shame there isn't more of Flo in it as I LOVE her with her hair up sporting big hoop earrings =D
Thanks for commenting =)

@waynebrasler Diane, was never tamed down, that incident you highlighted on The Johnny Carson Show was the beginning of her "MEGALOMANIA" face that will peaked during the time of the film The Wiz release, By then she started realizing that all her conning was starting to catch up with her!
SHE TRAMPLED OVER MANY FOR A LONG TIME!
I cross path with her twice in NYC during that period, socially and professionally and God knows there's a warm place in "HELL" waiting for her arrival!
Flo's last tv appearance full stop =(
Mary was def. killing it back there! Her performance and singing ability are both so underrated =(
Thanks for commenting MasonOnTheFly hehe.
Yeah back there.
I have a copy of this show on a cassette tape that was floating underground and I'll have to dig it out and listen to it again. When this appearance happened it was in 1967 and I was a kid and in bed and had to go to school the next day. This is when they made appearances on Sullivan, What's My Line and Johnny's show. Soon after Flo was gone and I think my heart left with her for as a kid who loved this group a BIG change was happening to the group. I missed Flo so.
By this time in their career Diana got so big headed she reaked of me, me, me! No wonder Flo got sick of her. The group became so slick doing these show tunes it was hard to remember them for their hits. Still as a kid they could do no wrong and after Flo left it was hard for me to watch them without her but I did because Mary was still in the fold. It was sad to watch the group fall apart but I kept faithful to them all the way to the end in 1977.
She was Diana fing Ross...she ignored haters like you for 60s years btw I never noticed Flo at all and barely noticed Mary basically just because she was pretty...They were backup singers. It was Diana's unique vocal style and personal charisma that took the other two and Motown to a another level.
@@Maatization Ain’t hating on Diana but face the facts you stupid Ross fans it took THREE woman to make The Supremes a success not ONE!
@@Maatization Ain't hating just stating facts. She meaning Ross was the least I looked at when the Supremes hit the scene but I eventually loved all THREE because it was THREE not ONE that made the Supremes a unique group. I watched their growth from 1964 until so since you're a ROSS fan do NOT discredit Flo, Mary, or Cindy for their uniqueness in rounding out the sound of the SUPREMES!
I would LOVE to see a HIGH quality version of this tv appearance without Diana's commentary -_-
All you hear today is people criticizing. I'd be willing to bet that most of the people that criticize Diana, Berry and complain about Flo being fired, and The Supremes wasn't the same without Flo, wasn't even around or even grew up in that era when The Supremes were together. Those of us that grew up with The Supremes didn't even talk about the petty stuff involving The Supremes, Motown or other groups. We had soo much beautiful music in those days until we just basked in the glory of it all.
I have this whole entire show....the original Tonight Show including the interview segment of the ladies with Johnny Carson.
@prjr1973 I would love for someone to post the entire show! I agree, they got their groove back in a mighty way with Jean though! In fact, their debut single as the new lineup charted higher than Ross' debut single (ironic huh? lol)
i hate diana doing that hiccups sound she started doing around this time
That is he most annoying thing
BAREBACK-- IT WAS SUPPOSE TO IMITATE WHAT MICHAEL JACKSON WAS DOING ON HIS SONGS,, but yes it was annoying,, but!! sing and learn..
@@reealitychick how is it supposed to imitate Michael Jackson when she did it before Michael Jackson? Lol you sound so stupid
This is 1966 Jackson was niwhere to be found!!!!😮@reealitychick
December 2021..watching this
So do I. I adore the look they rock here!
Thanks for commenting Tay.

When Diana said she could not be replaced, she meant that if she got sick, there was no stand-in for her.She did not mean that if she left the group entirely, she could not be replaced.
Carson asked the girls if they were breaking up, and Flo said, we're breaking up over you!
Ms. Ross, if you read these posts, a few things: I hated Mary and Flo being minimized. Profound disappointment over Flo leaving. The name change was
totally pointless. Finally, didn't you listen to the fans?
her silliness killed many a fabulous song never mind ...
Her silliness made them the greatest American group of all time....are you crazy or just hating...be grateful because if it wasn't for Diana we wouldn't know who the other two were. You see what happened to the group when she left.
@TheReturnOfBigBear Still impressive considering the NOTICEABLE change in sound...the new lineup catered to a more Urban market as opposed to mainstream Pop. They did have decent chart success. In fact the new lineup's debut, peaked higher than Ross' debut single...
Yes, I have so many great VHS clips I could share if I knew the technology.
Everyone the full clip with the interview and Lady Is A Tramp is on UA-cam now and has been for awhile. Just type in the search: The Supremes on The Tonight Show
After this song, they ALL sat on the couch. This is when Diana told ohnny that they hava stand in for Flo & Mary, BUT they dont have a stand in for her. They did The Lady Is A Tramp.
Regarding Diana being interviewed and Mary and Flo going backstage, at this pont Mary and Florence had long been out of the loop. They both had many sad stories about that. For the Tonight Show they did learn they wouldn't be on the couch until the last minute. I think they didn't know what to do think, but people at Motown were appalled Diana did not say, "This is wrong; we should all be together being interviewed, this is a group." That generosity was no longer in her, unfortunately.
I would love to get a gander at that close up and crisp.thanks so much..what a treat ! i was young once and that's why i missed that. I never caught them on Johnny...how many times were they on there I ask? i know it's written somewhere in one of the many books but ..oy vey....loved it tho...but the crap over is a bit much but that's Missy 4ya!
It sure would! I wish I had it =(
Actually the thin bit at the end is a clip of Cindy. Cindy had to say Flo's lines but it is Flo when they are doing The Happening.
It was right before she was fired - just a few days - hence the outfits.
I love mary's hair like that.
I wonder if this is the Tonight show episode where, during the interview, Diana mentions that all three have "substitutes" that can be brought in at a moment's notice. Would love to see THAT!
I wasn't bothered by what she was saying, I just didn't want it there LOL.
I would love to have the full appearance as I believe it was Flo's last tv appearance with the group
That's because Berry Gordy was really trying to put all focus on Diana - this was one of Flo's (the real Effie White's) last performances with the group
@DetroitLives313 yes, and it was after that remark, that Flo took over and began answering all the questions..........I remember.
@Vincent50 I BEG of you! Please uploaded the entire appearance :(
i got the whole thing to this, but its VERY distorted
I saw that MMaster--- thank you for the try --- I enjoyed what I could get .. at least it gave us all an idea of how Diana was so full of herself and how BGordy turned her into a back stabbing diva/... she could have said NO.. and Flo would be alive todayl and History of the Supremes would have been so different.
It would be nice to see this entire performance by The Supremes from the Tonight show.
I didn't mean on this show the other two were sent to purgatory; I meant, as I wrote, "After this point." The first time Diana sat on the couch alone I think Supremes fans everywhere was aghast. Diana looked perfectly happy. I asked Mary Wilson about it and she said nothing particularly was said to the two quickly vanishing Supremes about it but it had always been that way. She and Florence, and later Cindy, never were given any preparation for or explanation of anything that happened.
Florence was in the Supremes until July 29, 1967
I know it is, so sorry. I wish someone would post all their appearance from that night. I think they even did an interview on that show too, I wish I had it all =(
Thanks for commenting =D
I too would have preferred it without the added commentary but this is all I have =(
@GGE47 Mary did not want to go through that again,She wanted to contribute on how it should be carried out, after all she was one of the originals. The money was secondary. When we the fans stayed home,Diane just coudn't believe that. After all she WAS the Supremes. Then she started to hit the bottle, was arrested for drunk driving,we saw the police tapes of her getting arrested,She did recover and started touring again, but still had problems. The Jamaica incident, and a couple of others.Maybe someday.
OMG I would love to just hear the AUDIO - then again seeing them in those hip outfits makes me want to take that back! PLEEEASE post what you can =D
Well...that's how it was from that point on. I do LOVE what they're wearing though. Mary is WORKING THAT HAIR and I love Flo's hair like that. Diana knows how to fling them earings =P
Pushing Diana Ross to the front worked well for Berry Gordy and Motown. While Diana Ross was ego tripping she was not communicating with Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard about the money each of them should have in their account. Divide and Conquer
was the tactic used to keep them from talking about THE MONEY
yes Motown did focus on Diana, or should I say Berry did. Rememeber Diana's oldest daughter is Berry Gordy's daughter. :-)
The public focused on Diana what you talking about?
The Supremes sounded like shit without Florence (NO OFFENSE TO Mary). It's just that, I liked all 3 of their voices together! And I would still say the same thing if it had been Mary kicked out of the group.
Thin may be in but fat is where it's at -flo ballard
+StephenTillman2 that’s a Flo Ballard quote, even though Cindy Birdsong is the one who appears and was going to repeat it after 0:52
A lot of good it did her
@TheReturnOfBigBear The Spinners were a 70s group, but had one hit with Motown in late 1970,"It's a Shame" written by Stevie wonder and the guitar in the song was one of the Funk Brothers. The Spinners were probably glad to leave Motown. They had several hits after that.
@MotownMaster Oooo pleeease!! I beg you!! Please please please! *does puppy eyes*
Twiggy the world's first supermodel brought thin en vogue. Diane's frame is actually considered very attractive in mainstream culture. If she were taller she could be a model. Thin IS in!
I believe it is, but I don't have the rest - though I would LOVE to.
Thanks for commenting.
- JLG (JonathanLGardner)
@TheReturnOfBigBear Plus, Motown's focus had been Ross when she was in the group so once she was out of it, there was no longer the motivation to push the group as she was no longer in it.
Flo was stunning in those short hair days. Wish this was clear. Love me some Flo.
Mary is Fab !!!! Love this but not talking over
i gotta figure out how to get it from the VCR to the computer
@waynebrasler You're right. But technically, it WAS her record. Mary and Cindy didn't sing on "The Composer". It was The Andettes. Just another way for Berry to further isolate Diana from the girls.
Whose silliness? That's how they performed the song live - the song sounds playful compared to their other hits of around that time and they just played with that. I LOVE how they look in this - I would LOVE to see some high quality pics as this is Flo's last tv appearance with the group
LOL it's quite entertaining. The gospel roots come through in this performance - mute the audio and you would think the lord had come looool. In fact - they all went to the same church (which so happened to be pastored by Aretha's dad - need I say no more haha)
i have it, but its really distorted and not worth watching, they do mention Barbara Martin in the interview when Johnny mentions that there was 4 of them at one time
I have the full version of this with the interview with Johnny and The Lady Is A Tramp, but its very distorted
I mean really distorted its like 9 little screnes and the center one is the main one, in the interview Johnny mentions there were 4 of them at one time, and Diane mentions Barbara by name and says she is married with 3 or 4 kids, lol
Thank you T H E S U P R E M E S for posting this segment, but if you get a chance, please include the interview on the show by Johnny Carson. That's the last time all three members, Florence, Mary & Diane interacted publicly about their lives and careers.
It's poignant how at one point, Diane Ross make reference to Johnny Carson, to the fact that "they", meaning, Motown/Berry Gordy had "standings", like they do on Broadway Shows for Florence Ballard & Mary Wilson, but not for her?
That's really strange because I'm familiar with the theatre and Broadway, and yes, all live stage productions have "standings" for all the cast members in case of emergencies or illness as "the show must go on". But is for the "whole cast", not for some like Diane implies. It's really funny because shortly after this, Florence Ballard was replaced by Cindy Birdsong as she wouldn't go along with changes, Mary Wilson intimidated into submission, as she was told she could also be replaced, and the once vibrant female trio became "The Diane Ross Show / Diane Ross & The Supremes".
From there (1967) on, Mary & Cindy would become "bookends & artistic shadows" for Diane as she rode the coattails of THE SUPREMES into her 1969 "solo career" being put on her lap by her lover & benefactor Motown, CEO, Berry Gordy!
@yedon68 - Just curious to see upon what do you base your opinion?
I don't know.
If I had my old account JonathanLGardner then I probably would be even more advanced in my knowledge of The Supremes (and Flo in particular) but since youtube deleted that account I haven't been as interested =(
@waynebrasler Huh? It was Gordy who set-up Diana for an independent solo singer and acting career!
But by then it was ALL about Ross, Ross, ROSS. I'd OVE to have been a fly on the wall when Berry realised that the Supremes didn't need her to get hits - Jean proved that and that's why he killed the group.
@TheReturnOfBigBear Big Bear,If I were you I would think more about what is going to happen to Lybia than Florence. The time I saw her she had gained some weight.I saw a picture of her in the"70s with Cindy Birdsong and she was so trim. She was absolutely beautiful. It was Cindy who I couldn't even recognize.I remember reading this in a magazine back then.Cindy was going through her own problems at that time and had gained weight.Cindy got herself straight and I am glad.Looks like Cindy at :53 sec.
@waynebrasler No Wayne, that's not true. All 3 of them sat down with Johnny. I have the entire show on video tape. That was the night that Diane informed Mary, Flo, Johnny and the World that there were stand-ins for Mary and Flo, but of course not for herself............She could n't be replaced! You hear that Jean Terrell? LOL!
PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION OF MY VIDS BEFORE YOU ASK QUESTIONS!
I have put that information in there so please read it for yourself -_-
Thanks for watching my vids and commenting =D
Try recording it from the tv - but plug headphones into the tv and put those headphones over the microphone on the camera =D
Omg pleeease look into how you could post them! =D
One of the simplest (though probably not the best) ways would be to get a video camera and simply play the VHS tape on the TV and record it onto the video camera.
At the beginning it sounds like she did say "corsla" but I really have no idea what that means LOL - maybe it was someone's name...
Yes - we were just joking =P
If this was May22,1967 it was Florence Ballard.
@TheReturnOfBigBear Jean coudn't stand BerryGordy. It wasn't Mary.Where do you get that stuff? In that, she has something in common with Florence Ballard.
Garland English what happened
OMG! I am B E G G I N G you to post it p l e a s e !
I really want to see it - no matter how bad the quality =D
@waynebrasler If I were watching that night,I would have turned the tv off and gone to bed.
@bigbear39ca Jean Terrell replaced her and Supremes Fans forgot about who Diane Ross was. Whitney Houston came along later and completely replaced her in the mind and "ears" of all Americans and now Ross has been totally forgotten except for a few bitter drag queens. Facts, just the facts!
Vincent50>>> By this time in their careers after forming a group with three talented voices that could tackle many different styles and vocal ranges they were reduce to the Berry Gordy marketing ploy of Pop Chart Sound together with The Archies, The Monkeys, Tiny Tim & Disco Duck! The strictly Diana Ross Alvin chipmunk sound! That's what happens when you enter a back room contract without legal representation to protect you as an individual!
OMG lol, that's a mean thing to say. RIP Flo *lawd have mercy*
She said "Chorus Line", eat your heart out. Not "Corsla."
lol i agree!
@TheReturnOfBigBear You're telling me Up The Ladder To The Roof, Stoned Love, Touch, Together We Can Make Such Sweet Music and others aren't good material? There was nothing wrong with the quality of the music being put out...the JMC lineup's albums were well-recieved by critics
diana is the only one who is wearing the sequin, o well..it'S DIANA! LOL
Thin may be in,but fat is where it's at.Yes That is Florence in the background.
@DetroitLives313 - you got a kotex in your shorts
I loved Jean Terrell's voice. I liked the 70's Supremes. I liked the Ronettes much better than I did the Supremes.
I have no idea what "corsla" is and it was common of Diana to brag about how skinny she as part of their stage show - that's how Flo created her infamous line "thin maybe in, but honey fat is where it's at!" lol
easy to get to the top when you sleep with the Boss.
Mary should have left when Flo left so the two could collaborate on a career together...Diana was a star by now anyways. Or the other alternative was for Flo to stay in the Supremes and toe Motown's line...but then again she was never the diplomatic type in dealing with Gordy for many years to come.
@waynebrasler Good point. The thing is Berry and crew pretty much fed her ego till it was critically obese - and while it worked wonders on stage, it made her look like a complete and utter attention-seeker off of it. Shame that all 3 didn't get to talk...
Wasn't this flo last performance
@MeetTheSupremes - jean is just like you! nothing, I have a job and that's more then i can say for jean
Typical Diane from what waynebrasler says.Head size swelled a liitleThat is Flo with the tambourine.Flo would have said"thin may be in,but fat is where it's at."I only saw Cindy say that on tv.With Florence,it was used only in nightclubs. They must have started to use Cindy, but was a split second late.
@terrybigteekemp
What you all fail to realize is that it wasn't just a Motown thing. The music industry can be a cut throat business no matter what label you are on. Some of you want to criticize Motown, but if you took the time to know what went on with some Black people on other labels, then I'll rest my case. You are entitled to your opinion, but I don't think that many people will agree that Paul Williams was a better singer than David Ruffin, although Paul had fantastic baritone vocals.
@TheReturnOfBigBear Your lack of virtue has given you hell, not in the afterlife, but in this life.
EXACTLY! JUST POST MOTOWNMASTER lool xD
You can call me Jonathan, Supremes59
@sammy7819 MISS THANG! I know you are not coming up on this video typing that mess like you The Queen of Sheba honey. Who are you? What have you done in your life that comes within a shade of Jean's achievements?..........right....Bye. Take your hate elsewhere or find yourself blocked.
@TheReturnOfBigBear Jean never said that birdbrain.
LOL haha.
@GGE47 it's common sense.Long live the United States of America and the moral structure that mede us great. It's the only way for us to survive.Unfortuneately we are being compromised.
I think stereotypes are just an over-exaggeration *spelling* of the truth =P
Close up looks like Cindy.
Who is this nitwit talking ! ?? This is fabulous and sad last from Flo
