Exactly. The context is so much a part of it. The weather, the age, the vibe of the culture, your age, mostly no video and only live concerts... All of it matters.
I wore this album out on cassette in the 80’s cruising round with the lads in the car. This is the perfect opening track and blew me away when I first heard it. My personal favourite off the album is “Little Dreamer’ but the whole album is fire, to be fair. As you listen to more Van Halen I think you will start to appreciate Michael Anthony’s (the bass player) vocal harmonies. This one is fun to sing along with, with the unresolved note he sings on the word “deviiiiiiiiill”.
Just like this is the opening song of their debut album, it was also their opening song when I saw them open for Black Sabbath back in August of '78. What a fuckin' rush! A different thing I remember so clearly is standing in line outside of The Electric Ballroom in Milwaukee, waiting to see Judas Priest, and there was a van parked across the street in front of the nudie bar when all of a sudden this song came ROARING out of their kick ass sound system. Everyone in line just stood there with our mouths agape. Then the talk began, excited and questioning. The entire album played before we were let in the club, which made the wait real enjoyable. In fact, one of the girls I got to talking to in line about the album is now my wife of almost forty years, so this album holds a special place in my heart. This is the album that got us talking to each other. I'm real glad you don't feel the need to just lavish praise on a song. Or that you sit there and try to dissect the lyrics to find the deep meaning, the way so many other reaction channels do. I love that you focus in on the music and production, which, face it, is what makes a song great or a klinker. Without the music, the lyrics don't mean shit. And these reactors that feel the need to feel how deep the lyricist is are usually so embarrassingly wrong about the meaning of the words. Really pathetic. Thanks for the morning enjoyment.
'Van Halen' is one of the most influential rock albums ever. Just a timeless classic. It's feel good party vibe resonated w/ high school & college teenagers back in '78 to today. The album achieved total sales of 10 million in the U.S. in 1996 when it was last certified. Even in the last few years the album continued to periodically appear on the Billboard 200 sales charts.

Yeah that and Panama from 1984 were awesome. Hot for teacher I would throw in that mix, the whole damn album is great. I sneaked out of the house at 14 to see them at Maple Leaf Gardens for $10
Agree! For some reason it doesn't get too much love from the other subs. That's why I went w/ Hot For Teacher (video). It's one of the "iconic" vids. haha
Being 17 And Jamming To VH Loved The First Album Saw Them In Concert In 1977 In Philadelphia Spectrum What Great Music We Had In The 1960's -1970's Who Agrees
Probably just because it's not their best work ever. I mean, it's a good song, but I wouldn't call it a great song. I mean a couple of cat calls from Dave and a nice little rip from Eddie, but that's about it. It's okay.
That guitar tone ... shows what you can do with an overdriven tube amp, the treble pickup, and just the right amount of reverb ... I tried forever to get that sound just right iconic
They did have crazy live shows. I was a teenager when this song came out, and this was probably the football players' favorite group (the word we used in the seventies instead of band). When Van Halen was coming to town, the entire football team would be out of school the day after the concert because they'd go to see them every time, some of them every night they played, which could be two or three, thousands attending each night. When the jocks did come back to school, it was a flood of Van Halen concert t-shirts.
Got a demo of this album at the radio station where I worked a graveyard shift as DJ. The program director didn't like anything on the album, so he tossed it onto the giveaway stack. So, I took it home and played it through. No one knew who they were back then. A few months later a friend who did concert reviews asked if I wanted to accompany her to a concert. I asked who was playing. She said, "Firefall and some dutch band I've never heard of." When I asked around about the show, I found out it was Van Halen. I was like, wtf was the promotor thinking scheduling VH with Firefall. Completely different types of music. After I played their album for her my friend arranged for an interview with their management. Needless to say, they rocked the crowd and Firefall came on after and put everybody to sleep.
I saw them open for Black Sabbath just before they got huge. It's the first time I ever saw the opening act called back for an encore and I saw a bunch of concerts in the seventies. Most of the group I was with thought they were the better band. They put on a great rock and roll show and that's a fact.
Elgon Williams What a story! Your program director was a fool! But what a great break for you! I remember being 18 yrs old and heard this album from start to finish....I was hooked! It was and is still "before it's time"! Great concerts, with Sammy Hagar as well! Rock on!
When this dropped in the late 70's disco was everywhere...ugh...this was a heaven sent slab of good old guitar rock and roll! One of the early salvos of rock and roll reemerging.
Picture yourself in 1978 as a 17 year old in upstate New York. Runnin' With The Devil and Eruption/You Really Got Me were just starting to be played on FM rock stations. It was like who is this?? They blew everybodies minds! They were a great new sound, a great new talent, and they ruled the summer of '78! Eddie Van Halen playing Eruption. Welcome to a new guitar god!
Part of the 23% here been with you guys from the start. I don’t say much but have requested songs and now I am listing them again Radar Love- Golden Earring Cowboy Song- Thin Lizzy Born to be Wild- or Magic Carpet Ride - Steppenwolf
Golden earring is very much on the list it’s been a close pick the past couple weeks I’m sure it’s coming soon. As far as the others steppenwolf was a close pick as well and we definitely are doing thin lizzy soon
Oh man, the memory of hearing this (my first VH song!) when it was released. 1978 - I was 14 and in the midst of Disco and Punk and the birthing of New Wave this dropped and woke us all up. I still remember the excitement the next day, everyone of my friends talking about it. Cheers! Also: "Jamie's Crying" from this album is sampled by Tone Loc "Wild Thing"
I like the specificity of the rating system. You guys are the only ones doing that. Can tell you liked the song too. The way you went into detail about what you didn't like is good. Tastes in music are subjective people like what they like. It's fun watching your reaction.
I hear this and it takes me back to 10th/11th grade working nights in a warehouse with my best friend - taking deliveries, blasting music, sometimes a bit spooky just the two of us, then riding our bikes home in the dark through south L.A. - yeah, Runnin' With The Devil
You want VH bangers? Try "I'm the One," "Somebody Get Me a Doctor," "Take Your Whiskey Home," "Hear About it Later," "House of Pain," and "Me Wise Magic."
As a huge, huge, huge van halen fan, that discovered them around the same age you guys are, you need to consider the following songs: I'm the One Romeo Delight Beautiful Girls Everybody Wants Some! David Lee Roth's screams are his signature things sort of like tapping for Eddie. They recorded their first album essentially live, 1 - 2 takes. Give "I'm the One" a listen. I bet you'll be very surprised. It takes you on a journey and will wow you for certain.
I remember this from 1979 at the Superdome in New Orleans, "Day of Rock and Roll" they played this, then somehow Eddie is up on a platform about 40 feet up jumping into Eruption, then boom after the short pause, he's down on stage cranking up "You Really Got Me" they put on a show back then for sure. The concert also featured Boston, Heart Blue Oyster Cult, Sammy Hagar, TKO, and Nazareth, 12 hours long. Heart was last so I was there until the end.
I love that you guys focus on the musicianship just as much, if not more, than the vocals. So many other reaction videos only speak to the lyrics. That’s like eating an amazing gourmet meal and only noticing the wine 🍷. New subscriber here.
Supertramp, boys! Sayin it until it happens! Still undecided which one you need most, cause they ALL....ALL OF THE SONGS...slap. Breakfast In America is an album people regard as one of the "Essential" classic rock albums you need to listen to before ya die, but i dont wanna just give you their hits as if thats the peak. The two albums before that, Crime Of The Century and Even In The Quietest Moments , have become Rock staples too. I'd still try "Rudy" first, sung by Rick Davies. Roger Hodgeson is the other main singer and song writer, so then try "School" or "Hide in your shell" For his stuff from the same album. "Dreamer" too. On each album, Rick and Roger have equal song time. So you can pick your favorite style. Most people think Roger's songs on Breakfast in america are the main Sipertramp hits. but im trying to start you on Crime Of The Century here so you can get a good sense of their best work! PLease check em out. I think they'll be a favorite.
@@tlarson7991 Oh yeah!! Brother Where You Bound is an amazing album but I dont want them listening to that so soon because its the first album without Roger and it wouldn't give them the best introduction to Supertramp as a band. @@cpttrips236 YES! THANK YOU! I know, right?! Everyone always gushes over Roger's songs and rightfully so, but Rick's songs are just as great! I LOVE "Downstream" from Even In The Quietest Moments! So simple, yet so heartfelt and beautiful! I hope A&A will give "Rudy" a shot!
Every reaction video: ANDY: That was it??? ALEX: I thought it was a good ending. ANDY: Yeah man, I just meant I wanted more. How do you not know this by now?
I remember playing basketball behind the school and a friend pulled in and said, "Guys come and listen to this, these guys are going to be the best rock group ever!" he cranked up his car stereo and we listened to this song, I had never heard anyone that sounded like that, vocally or the guitar
I recall when these guys debut'd, Diamond Dave took a lot of criticism for being a pig for attention, musically and on stage. His demand for the spotlight pulled all focus off of Eddie's genius guitar work. That said, a talented lead singer with huge ego is a recipe for success in a rock band. Oh, and "Ain't Talkin Bout Love."
A&A did Aint Talkin Bout Love about 6 months ago. Enjoy!! Re: Diamond Dave: Strange how that worked, huh? Usually, it destroys a band off the bat. Great day to ya!

Important to note: You were slightly disappointed when this ended because you wanted more. Understand that, on the album, this goes right into Eruption/You Really Got Me. When you experience the album in sequence, it's a much better experience. This album is practically flawless. As for other VH tracks, I would recommend "I'll Wait" and "Drop Dead Legs" (from 1984). They both feature some really unique soloing by Eddie - they're a couple of my personal favorites. Enjoy!

George Tourlos damn man that’s a long time haha you’ve been around since the beginning, so glad you’re enjoying the content. Scorpions are on the list we will definitely be hitting them at some point.
DLR was famous for his high pitch screams and his famous whistle register which he no longer has. The song is a masterpiece among many many more. Listen to the first album in its entirety and you will see!!!
VAN HALEN: I SAW ALL THE TOURS WITH ROTH FROM VAN HALEN 1 IN 1978 TO 1984 AND AGAIN IN 2013! I SAW 5150, OU812, AND BALANCE WITH HAGAR. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER EDWARD VAN HALEN!!! RIP EDDIE
The sound at the beginning was made using the car horns from the band member’s cars, including Eddie’s Volvo, Alex’s Opel, a VW and a Mercedes. They mounted the horns in a box and powered them with two car batteries with a foot switch to turn them off and on. They originally used the sound for the demo version of “House of Pain.” Eddie is truly a mad scientist. He also recorded the engine revving of his Ferrari for “Panama”, used an electric drill for the mixer sounds for “Poindcake”, and scratched a rhythm with a pool brush on his pool patio floor for the intro to “Dirty Water Dog.” When the band recorded “Could This Be Magic?” It was raining outside, so they opened the studio door to capture the sound of the rain which you can hear in the background. Eddie has always said about all the sounds he creates, “If it sounds good, then it’s good.” Edit: Totally forgot, for the intro to “Tora Tora”, Eddie recorded it to track backwards to make it sound like a WWII fighter aircraft.
I never really got why "Runnin' with the Devil" was so popular. There are so many other higher energy, better songs on that debut album IMO. Check out "I'm the One". I think what "Runnin' with the Devil" is in most need of is a blistering guitar solo - like Eddie does on most of the songs on that album.
Andy says “that’s it?” My sentiments also. Never really cared for this song for that reason. To me it gets started but, doesn’t really take off and fly. Like you expect it to. Also, to me it’s too repetitive and not one of their better songs and I really like them. Always have, since their beginning.
This album changed the way I listened to music back when I was about 12 or so. Nothing really sounded like Van Halen, from Eddie's guitar, Roth's mega swagger vocals and stage presence to those incredible backing vocals. Everything about early Van Halen was new, and they've probably influenced as many bands as anyone. Check out Dance The Night Away from their second album to hear them finally crack to radio charts while still retaining that classic VH sound.
Next up in the Van Halen repertoire: Mean Street! It wasn't a huge hit and it's probably only hard core Van Halen fans that know the song, but it's Swagger City!!!!! Such a great song!
Gotta dish out some Van Halen to start the week!! Great pick guys, a total banger, what’s the next one by them we gotta check out?!?! 🔥🤟🏻

I first heard this song RIGHT after USAF Basic Training, Jun 78. NEVER heard anything like it before.
Hats off to Gene Simmons ( KISS) for finding and pushing these guys to record execs when they were a bar band.
PS- that jacket is A tier!
Wow. Gene Simmons pushed both Van Halen and Rush? Huge respect.
Had to pull it out for the one day it was Cold here haha

Betty Boop? Vampires? They don’t write em like they used to!
Yeah that and Panama from 1984 were awesome. Hot for teacher I would throw in that mix, the whole damn album is great. I sneaked out of the house at 14 to see them at Maple Leaf Gardens for $10
THE 70s Kicked the 80s ASS ,, ENOUGH SAID
For a fun side-excursion, I recommend Dave’s solo song “Just A Gigolo.” Cheers, guys!
Everbody Wants Some next please. Great reaction guys. Thanks.
Agree! For some reason it doesn't get too much love from the other subs. That's why I went w/ Hot For Teacher (video). It's one of the "iconic" vids. haha
@@lisaw5604 yes that's another good one. Love the earlier music. My favorite album is Women and Children First. Just a kickass album beginning to end.
@@lowrider4266 Yep! I think people avoid it because it was more experimental? I dug it, but that's me! haha
@@lisaw5604 yes you can say experimental lol. I loved it also. The drums and beat in everybody just draws you in.
@@lowrider4266 Totally agree. Have a great day, low rider! :)
Ain’t talkin bout love is my fave! David Lee Roth is the GOD of Swag ;)

This is seriously one of my favorite VH songs and no one ever talks about it!
Believe me when it came out in the late 70s we were talking a lot about it! Aka Party rock
@@youtoo2233 Oh I remember! I just feel like people forgot about it!
Probably just because it's not their best work ever. I mean, it's a good song, but I wouldn't call it a great song. I mean a couple of cat calls from Dave and a nice little rip from Eddie, but that's about it. It's okay.
@@Snowdogkh I think I love it because I love the sound of the guitar tone. Can't get enough of it. Pssst, I know who snow dog is. ;)
That guitar tone ... shows what you can do with an overdriven tube amp, the treble pickup, and just the right amount of reverb ... I tried forever to get that sound just right iconic
“ Light Up the Sky” from VH2
Agree
Couldn't agree more!! One of my favorite VH songs.
What an awesome story!!! Thank you!
@@umpdaddy1 I bet they weren't openers for long!
Elgon Williams What a story! Your program director was a fool! But what a great break for you! I remember being 18 yrs old and heard this album from start to finish....I was hooked! It was and is still "before it's time"!
Great concerts, with Sammy Hagar as well! Rock on!
What a great story! I've never heard of Firefall - I was born in '74 so maybe they weren't around by the time I started buying records. 🤘🤩
VH has a DLR era banger called "Take Your Whiskey Home"!! It is not one of their most popular songs but was always a favorite of mine.
This is the song that VH burst onto the scene with. A lot of car stereo speakers got fried listening to it wfo!
When this dropped in the late 70's disco was everywhere...ugh...this was a heaven sent slab of good old guitar rock and roll! One of the early salvos of rock and roll reemerging.
Precisely
Hey Guys, you still need to check out "Light up the Sky," from VH 2.
Great job, guys!! Van Halen is one of my favorites! Please try "Panama" from the 1984 album. I think you'll like it. Have a great week!!
Part of the 23% here been with you guys from the start. I don’t say much but have requested songs and now I am listing them again
Radar Love- Golden Earring
Cowboy Song- Thin Lizzy
Born to be Wild- or Magic Carpet Ride - Steppenwolf
Jamel aka Jamal has done Cowboy Song, you can check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/JeF626jOgGU/v-deo.html
Golden earring is very much on the list it’s been a close pick the past couple weeks I’m sure it’s coming soon. As far as the others steppenwolf was a close pick as well and we definitely are doing thin lizzy soon
Diamond Dave said, when comparing himself to Sammy Hagar, "he goes to parties......I am the party."
Perfect. 👌
THE CARS, BLONDIE ,THE POPLICE , TOTO Many great bands came out in that time , ROCK WAS HUGE IN THE LATE 70s kISS THE STONES LATE 70s ALL SO.
Hell yeah ready to rock out
I like the specificity of the rating system. You guys are the only ones doing that. Can tell you liked the song too. The way you went into detail about what you didn't like is good. Tastes in music are subjective people like what they like. It's fun watching your reaction.
I think their cover of You Really Got Me is the best.
As a huge, huge, huge van halen fan, that discovered them around the same age you guys are, you need to consider the following songs:
I'm the One
Romeo Delight
Beautiful Girls
Everybody Wants Some!
David Lee Roth's screams are his signature things sort of like tapping for Eddie. They recorded their first album essentially live, 1 - 2 takes.
Give "I'm the One" a listen. I bet you'll be very surprised. It takes you on a journey and will wow you for certain.
"Drop Dead Legs" is awesome!
I remember this from 1979 at the Superdome in New Orleans, "Day of Rock and Roll" they played this, then somehow Eddie is up on a platform about 40 feet up jumping into
Eruption, then boom after the short pause, he's down on stage cranking up "You Really Got Me" they put on a show back then for sure. The concert also featured Boston, Heart
Blue Oyster Cult, Sammy Hagar, TKO, and Nazareth, 12 hours long. Heart was last so I was there until the end.
And a million kids picked up a guitar. Eddie’s tone at that time was described as “brown’ and everybody chased it.
The extended version of "Cannonball" is an awesome listen. My fav.
@@tlarson7991 Oh yeah!! Brother Where You Bound is an amazing album but I dont want them listening to that so soon because its the first album without Roger and it wouldn't give them the best introduction to Supertramp as a band. I want them to really explore their main 3 albums first.
Oh, A&A! If you're reading this: Another reason you should try Supertramp? Guess who plays guitar on Brother Where You Bound?............DAVID GILMOUR! I rest my case!! IT IS YOUR DESTINY! lol!
Rudy and Cannonball are some of their best songs.
I second that, I'm missing it big time on this channel.
"Everybody Wants Some" "And The Cradle Will Rock" from Women and Children First are pretty awesome!! Bought that record with my allowance at 14.
There are 5 or 6 better songs on this album. “ Ain’t Talkin ‘Bout Love” , “ On Fire” , “Atomic Punk” to name a few.

Every reaction video:
ANDY: That was it???
ALEX: I thought it was a good ending.
ANDY: Yeah man, I just meant I wanted more. How do you not know this by now?
Nitpicking fuckers aren't they. I wanna hear some music they wrote and Nitpick it. That's It
Deran Hall lmaooo dead 💀 😂😂
He’s not saying not good enough, he’s saying it’s over to fast. I’m afraid RUSH and FLOYD have spoiled our boy.
Eddie was a whiner, there was no shortage of attention on him

This song totally rocked my world in a major way when I was 13. Still rocks!
Enjoy!
No doubt what song should be next " Ain't Talking Bout Love". Enjoy!

George Tourlos damn man that’s a long time haha you’ve been around since the beginning, so glad you’re enjoying the content. Scorpions are on the list we will definitely be hitting them at some point.

Scorpions, Coming Home. This song will kick you in the liver it rocks so much! Every time I hear the awesome guitar work on this, I am blown away
DLR was famous for his high pitch screams and his famous whistle register which he no longer has. The song is a masterpiece among many many more. Listen to the first album in its entirety and you will see!!!
Dudes, you need to do "Hot for Teacher" and "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout love.
Agree! I suggest video. Iconic! -- A&A did Ain't Talkin 'Bout Love. Check video playlist 6 months back. Enjoy! :)
They originally used the sound for the demo version of “House of Pain.”
Eddie is truly a mad scientist. Eddie has always said about all the sounds he creates, “If it sounds good, then it’s good.”
Edit: Totally forgot, for the intro to “Tora Tora”, Eddie recorded it to track backwards to make it sound like a WWII fighter aircraft.
Because hind sight is 20/20 - this was an epic summer album. From the time when disco was still more popular than hard rock, let alone metal.
Because it's a great song and people are allowed to like a great song
Oh does this bring back memories... back stage, 3 tours in a row and believe me those were some crazy days and wild times!
Absolute musts: "Ain't Talking 'Bout Love" and "Jaime's Cryin'"

Radio garbage hits...
THREE KEYS TO THE VAN HALEN SOUND: EDDIE’S GUITAR 🎸 ALEX’S SNARE DRUM 🥁 AND MICHAEL ANTHONY’S STRATOSPHERE BACKING VOCALS!!!
Andy says “that’s it?” My sentiments also.
Never really cared for this song for that reason. To me it gets started but, doesn’t really take off and fly. Like you expect it to.
Also, to me it’s too repetitive and not one of their better songs and I really like them.
Always have, since their beginning.
R.I.P Edward, you Dutch legend!!!
Someone once told me "Sure, David Lee Roth is a Bozo... but he's OUR Bozo."
One more comment is back then you put on the whole album and played the whole thing....
Next up in the Van Halen repertoire: Mean Street! It wasn't a huge hit and it's probably only hard core Van Halen fans that know the song, but it's Swagger City!!!!! Such a great song!
