If you owned a PIONEER, MARANTZ or uh SANSUI receiver In 1978, VH I is THEE!! album in summer '78! The aforementioned big 3 of home paired with a pair of JBL speakers and either a GARRARD or SCOTT turntable. TURN IT UP!!!
I was 16, flipping through the bins at a record warehouse with a friend, when that reverse car horn intro started out from the speakers. "Interesting", I thought, as I paused for a moment. "What's next?" When the bass line grooved in and the riff dropped, my jaw literally dropped and I looked up across the store to see my friend staring at me wide-eyed. It was clear that this was DIFFERENT. We said nothing and just headed straight to the counter to see who this was (they propped up the album cover of what they were playing on the wall). We walked over to the display, picked up an album each (there would be no taping and sharing of this album, as was usual) hopped on our bikes and road home. We had some serious listening to do. Still one of the most vivid memories of my childhood.

Dave's voice is gorgeous. He is just extremely inconsistent in his effort. Ice Cream Man, On Fire, Atomic Punk all great vocals...rich tone, full sound, killer falsetto screams. Best live! Saw them 3 times with Dave early on and he was a tremendous personality and entertainer.

When you say Van Halen sounds clean, to me that's down to the fact that you can hear separation in all the instruments, done as they would sound live, without overdubs. They sounded powerful, but with a certain space and separation and airiness in the sound. With headphones you could follow one instrument or another and hear it cleanly. Also, a lot of that is testament to Eddie's effortlessly precise playing.
Exactly, that clean sound is missing in many of today's productions.
Yup, saw them live on the tour for Van Halen 2 and the energy and the sound was just amazing. Can't go wrong with 1 guitar
if the player knows what he is doing.
Music for this album was done in like 6 days. Vocals took longer. All you had to do with VH is set up the instruments and press the record button

David Lee Roth is the singer. It's easy, they're singing about the life of a rockstar. Thought it was going to be simple but ended up not being so. Being out on the road all the time, maybe having lots of girls but no actual love, no one to come home to.

This was an amazing album. I remember back in ‘78 cranking up the volume when listening to it. When RUNNING WITH THE DEVIL was playing my mom would start screaming TURN THAT OFF! TURN THAT OFF! I guess Mom didn’t want me running with the devil.

"Runnin' with the devil" was the kind of lifestyle that he was living "when he jumped out on the road," touring with the band. That's when he found that 'living the simple life wasn't so simple' when you'v got everything in excess... "I'm living at a pace that kills." Van Halen was a party-hard band
I still remember buying this album back in 1978 - saw it in the record store and loved the logo on the cover, bought it without ever hearing anything about the band, took it home and put it on my record player and this was the first song I heard .. immediately blown-away and listened to the entire album at least 3 times that day, called my friends and said "you've got to come over and hear this band". I miss the days of making these awesome discoveries!!

I was in a record store back in the late 70s when the clerk put this album on to play. About twenty seconds later I was at the counter, buying a copy. Later I got to see them in concert in Austin during their first tour, and about halfway through, bassist Michael Anthony did a solo that ended with him playing the opening notes for this song with his teeth. It was awesome.
It's hard to overstate how much of a sea change this song made in the course of hard rock. I was twelve, it was jaw-dropping hearing Eddie for the first time.
You're right about that. I distinctly remember how VH pretty much killed off the disco era, lol. I was an instant fan and have all their albums.
So many imitators, of which zero percent succeeded.

David Lee Roth is the singer and his trademark is that scream. Eddie Van Halen and Michael Anthony are background vocals. They have a very unique sound and you can tell them from anyone. They are dynamite.

... this group, and this album...Van Halen's 1978 debut, came along when rock needed a new sound. Van Halen delivered!! All songs on their debut are SO good.... An adrenaline charge!!
This song was the first VH tune I ever heard, and it hooked me instantly. I first heard it immediately after homeroom let out in high school, as someone who would soon become one of my best friends would crank it up on his boom box, walking down the hall to class.
I'm hoping you'll check out Eruption/You Really Got Me, from this same album. I know you watched the "Eruption Solo" video, but that wasn't really the same.

I absolutely agree! My very first concert was Van Halen's 1980 Invasion Tour, when I was 9 years old...that first VH record is my favorite to this day, and I highly recommend the studio version of "Eruption" as opposed to the live version most folks react to...
This was the first Van Halen song I ever heard and the riff hit me like no other song ever hit me and became the beginning of me becoming a Die Hard Van Halen Fan.
I used to rent a cottage in the 70s on Lake Temiskaming in northern Ontario and would play this album at night on my kick ass Sansui stereo on the porch facing the beach. My friends in town would sit on the dock 5 miles across the lake in town and could hear this as clear as a bell.
In the olden days before lyrics could be found, I always thought Dave sang " I got no love in Korea"' Even though I knew it must've been wrong, I couldn't make out just what he was saying.

This came out when I was still in High School and we partied are backsides to this lp. Eddie gave us a whole new style of playing guitar.
Listen to "Jamie's Crying" its a very good hit they did and its really enjoyable to listen to.
David Lee Roth employed polyphonic vocals, which I love. He also had a decent range. He’s not one would point to as having a good voice, but he was still a great singer, and a damned astounding frontman. Mark Anthony’s high tenor was also a big part of that characteristic VH sound, and created interesting textures when singing with EVH, behind DLR.

Not just Eddie; the entire band was in the pocket from start to finish in their concerts. Michael Anthony and Alex Van Halen are easily in the top ten with their instruments.
Everyone was so unique on their own that we'll never cease to be amazed by the synergy of all four men playing and singing together on stage.

The year was 1978. Late summer, I believe. My friend Randy told me and my best friend Bobby (RIP Bobby!) that he had just bought a new album and we had to hear it. Who is it I asked? Van Halen he said. Of course, neither of us had heard of them. Randy had a job roofing and had $$ and he had recently bought a decent stereo system at Radio Shack. 100W receiver, Mach 1 speakers and a turntable hanging from the ceiling on chains. We all piled into his small bedroom at his parents house. He dropped the needle on side one of the album, and the second the bass hit the first note, it shook the house and I have been a big fan ever since.

David Lee Roth was the singer for this era of Van Halen. He just came out and told everyone that he is retiring and hanging up the shoes. Eddie Van Halen was the guitarist, and he passed away just a bit over a year ago. Alex Van Halen is the drummer and Eddie's older brother. Michael Anthony is on bass. From 1977 to 1985 David Lee Roth was their singer. And to me. It is the best years of the band.

David lee roth is lead singer until 1985. He left the band and sammy hagar took over singing. Eddie plays guitar, Eddie's brother Alex is the drummer and Michael Anthony is on bass. The early van halen was hard rock with many great hits like. Jump, I'll wait, ain't talking about love and many more. When sammy joined the band in 1986. Van halen changed their style to meet the music of that era, which was more pop rock. Sammy really showed off Eddie's talents during this time. With Eddie being able to play many different instruments. The duo of sammy and Eddie really created so many unique songs during the late 80's into the 90' with song's like. Right now, poundcake, why can't this be love, and one of my favorites off the soundtrack from the movie twister. Humans being. Eddie just absolutely shreds the whole song and sammy just goes off. Awsome song. Check it out. Van halen was great, it was awesome growing up on their music back then.

I was 12 when this album came out in '78.
When "Runnin' With The Devil" and "Eruption/You really Got Me" screamed across the airwaves and slammed us right between the eyes (and ears), the face and sound of hard rock was changed forever. We had NO idea what we were listening to....but we loved every note played.
Eddie Van Halen was my first guitar hero. Angus Young of AC/DC would be the next in line.

Also do “Everybody Wants Some”. For some reason I pictured Eddie running a pipe wrench across the strings in the first part of the song lol.
He was scraping the pick across the strings above the nut, which is the piece at the top of the neck that keeps the strings in place in terms of height above the fingerboard and the distance between each string. The tension of the strings is really tight there so it just makes the plinking sound rather than the strings fully vibrating as they do between the nut and the bridge. Eddie was such an innovator and it is amazing how many little tricks and techniques he already had for the release of this first album in early 1978. Rocked the world, but completely shook the guitar community, turned it upside down and changed it forever, similar to the impact of Hendrix in the 60s. Introducing us to guitar sounds that had never been heard before, especially hearing Eruption for the first time. Besides an incredible naturally talented guitarist, he was always tinkering with the tools of his trade (guitars, amps, effects, etc.) to replicate the sounds in his head. His infectious smile while playing showed how effortless it was for him from a talent perspective and how he enjoyed and loved what he was doing. Alex is/was a phenomenal drummer as well. You guys should definitely do a VH livestream and/or full album review. Also, consider checking out new music from Eddie’s son Wolfgang in the band Mammoth WVH. Start with “The Distance” ua-cam.com/video/HI3aPJkZmNU/v-deo.html a song about his dad after he passed away after battling cancer. Even if you don’t react to the official video, please watch it for yourselves. Very touching and makes the song even more meaningful. Side note: Mammoth was one of Van Halen’s early band names before settling on Van Halen. Wolfgang is super humble and nice. A gifted musician in his own right; for this first album he wrote all the songs and plays all the instruments. Pretty amazing! Please check it out and see if you like it. I remember. 1978. We, (the band), were driving to a gig and a commercial came on the radio. Some new band with a new album. They played parts of Atomic Punk and Jamie's Cryin'.
I was blown away. My brother and drummer. He says, "just another flash in the pan band". I thought... Nope. This is something different. As soon as the album came out I bought it.
That was when I basically stopped playing Les Pauls, (for a little while), and got a Strat. I needed that tremelo. Lol. Great reaction.

For guitar players, this song is special because the guitar was tuned in an unusual way. Eddie always played with all strings tuned down a half step and for this song the B string down a whole step. Eb, G#,C#,F#, A, Eb
When my kids were little and this song came on the car radio I would sing "RUNNING WITH SCISSORS" and they'd get a big kick out of it. Ahh the simpler days.

The bass player Michael Anthony was such a solid element in the band. He was happy providing a driving bass line as a perfect canvas on which Eddie could go to town with sonic colour. But!! On certain songs his bass playing would shine. He was also the main backing singer, with his cherub-like wailing.
My absolute fave song by Van Halen! I bought this CD and WORE IT OUT! David Lee Roth was the singer and I saw them live several years ago in New Orleans and he STILL got it! I've been in love with that man most of my life!

Awesome reaction! This was Van Halen's first album, American Hard Rock at the height of disco, and they recorded and mixed this in 18 days! Their second album only took 6 days to record and mix! This album is like Frito chips, you can't just listen to one song, the whole album is fire!
The pick behind the nut on the guitar in the intro was the coolest thing I ever heard when I was a kid just getting into rock music.

This was the 1st song I ever heard by Van Halen way back just before high school. When I heard it, I went slack jawed, immediately. I remember thinking that it was the newest and coolest sound out of a guitar that I had ever heard. The attitude of the song blew me away, also. I remember thinking who the F are these guys! When I listen to it now, it is a fairly simple song and simple (though bad-ass) riff, but at the time, it was like nothing I'd ever heard before and I knew I would never forget that 1st listen. To that point with few exceptions, real rock had been exterminated by disco. There just weren't any new rock bands killin' it. I think Van Halen singlehandedly saved rock n roll. And from 1978 until 1984 they only got better. Rest in peace Eddie (GOAT)!
The Lead singer is David Lee Roth. He was their first vocalist. Helluva showman. The simple life he is talking about is the unattached life. No job, no responsibilities, no attachments. Just living for yourself and doing as you please. And he has found it isn't so simple... or great. You can live simply but most people's idea of what that is all screwed up.

The brothers in the band were the drummer and guitarist (Alex and Eddie respectively).
This was their first hit off their debut album. still one of their best. one of my favorites of all their songs.
Another great one from that same album is JAMIES CRYING
Ton Loc sampled the riff from that song for one of his two famous hits.

There used to be an Air Force competition that was held bi-annually in Florida called "Readiness Challenge" that involved all the Air Force commands. The team I was on was Space Command. Each team would march into the hangar every night to the beat of whatever song they chose and ours was "Running with the Devil". Also, we won that year. Lol
No one can do it like Dave, VH was at their all time best the DLR!! This band is so amazing, the VH brothers are two of the most talented people on earth, and Mike? all I can say is they would not be VH without Mike. Mike's vocals are key, they tie it all together and he's an amazing bass player. I personally do not care for Hagar. THIS song is the epitome of the original VH sound that everyone fell in LOVE with! Dave's screams cannot be matched, he was a great front man, always getting the crowd going, he was super energetic, athletic, crazy and sexy!

My Childhood right here. Saw them in Concert 3 X and enjoyed every bit of it. First time was when I was 15 years old.
That sound at the beginning was a row of old English car horns run at the same time to get the sound they needed. It's cool the things they did to make their music.
This song is a trick -- it's the first song on the album and probably the first Van Halen song most people heard. It lulls you to sleep... then song #2 comes on -- Eruption. It blew people's minds back in 1978. Most people didn't even believe it was actually a guitar.

I think the lyrics are like - when you have a lot of time on your hands (the simple life - maybe because you have money or chose a life without a lot of responsibility and attachment) you get into trouble.. Like that saying about idle hands and the devil.
I e always interpreted this as the life of a rock star always on the road. Not what was expected. Describing their life in general as they see it unfolding.

This album went platinum within months in 1978. Songs like this one hit the radio and became a game-changer for hard rock with its raw, dirty, but sharper sound, next-level guitars, and whole-band-harmonizing vocals (like Queen, but with a near-metal style). Eddie was the guitar-maestro innovator we needed coming out of the 70s, and Dave the bombastic, take-no-prisoners hard rock frontman. It was a privilege to hear their success grow over those next 5 years, as a teenager back then...what a time.
The brothers in this band are Eddie and (drummer) Alex Van Halen. Singer David Lee Roth is a lifelong bachelor with no known children, or siblings. The, by rock 'n roll standards, "oddball" was bassist Michael Anthony. He married young to his high school sweetheart and, except for his love of whiskey, never lived the "rockstar" lifestyle in any way. To this day, Mike is widely regarded among his peers as one of the most genuinely nicest people to ever be involved in the business.
Mike's biggest contribution to the band wasn't necessarily his bass playing, but rather his vocals. David Lee Roth had a very limited vocal range. All the high-pitched vocals in the early Van Halen songs was Michael Anthony.

I was raped and assaulted in the 70s and all adults said that Rock and Roll was devil music and drove kids to drugs but for me a Van Halen song from the album Woman and Children First gave me the strength and pride to not commit suicide so just goes to show you music of all kinds is uplifting thanks for letting me vant keep on Rockin 🤘
