the best part of any vacation is pulling into your own driveway. adventures are fun, but so is sitting in your recliner at home watching you tube. balance in everything.
i am so enjoying this tour ian hubnut. just the purity in all you share and show. i appreciate the honesty in each of your days and i relate. i have done some extensive tours and there are days that will be life time memory makers and others where one is 'supposed' to be on fire but it just isnt happening. i have come to terms with this myself and its good to hear see you roll with that too. i recall being on a month long drivinng tour once. there were more destinations to go but inside i knew i had literally gone the extra mile and that it was time to start making my way back 'home' for all the same reasons you described. once again, loving following your tour. thank you so much

I’ve so enjoyed your journey to Croatia, it’s been brilliant. My ex-wife thinks she spotted me entering the Tiffany store in Vienna on a Hubnut video. I told her I’m here in Canada. I think she believes me, bit worried she might be seeking more alimony though.
I love the Ladas, happy memories of my first car, a Lada Riva 1300SL, amazing reliable, affordable family transport, so nice to see them being restored to their former glory!!.
That Lada station is great! Drove a brother of it in the Gyor region.

Know the feeling of touring round Yurp for work in a small car for weeks at an end, and getting more and more tired and just wanting to be home, so I understand where you are coming from. As for being blown around by crosswinds, my little Skoda 120L was notorious for it, sacks of sand in the front boot did help a bit. Good luck with the rest of the trip. Do take it easy. Try and rest up if you're getting tired. Thanks for some more highly watchable stuff. This 'A tad tired and grumpy in Vienna in the rain' vid rather memorable.
I'm definitely seeing a Lada in your future Ian. You always swoon when you see one! :)
So you will have to book a return trip to Hungary in the future to test drive the restored Ladas!
After so much lovely countryside, it's no wonder a city doesn't seem such fun.

...and again, an engaging travelogue! I fully relate to the sense of wanting to get home; here in the States, I use the expression "barn sour", meaning the horse is ready to gallop straight back to the barn! My wife and I felt this last October, when we drove from Ohio to Seattle to visit my Mom and friends/family; lots of things to see, but we definitely had a sense of "get-there-itis"! Before and after our Seattle stay, we stopped to visit friends in South and North Dakota (the latter where I lived for nine years); almost missed being there; the grand, open skies, relative quiet, rolling, golden landscapes...
"Bells and trams" LOL at the commentry to Vienna. You really get the impression he just wanted to be home at this point. Great video and thanks for sharing :)
Brought back fond memories of my trip last year! Vienna is best in small surrounding villages imho. Totally understand your feelings travelling after Target Croatia achieved! I had similar while in Italy! At least I had my 4 legged buddies to keep my routine continous! Enjoy, Pace yourself!
I agree about Vienna, a city that left me cold, just felt like it was no longer alive and just been embalmed for the tourists (dare I say, a bit like the centre of Paris).

I'm glad you found the source of the knocking, as it was worrying me. I once ignored a knocking noise, until the point that the movement in the nearside bottom ball joint wore through the side of the pinch bolt. Then I drove over a bump, the bottom ball joint disconnected itself, the wheel flipped out sideways at 90 degrees, and I came to a screeching halt in the middle of the road.
Kingpins are still rattling though!

I share your views about cities. I had to visit one this week to see about a knee replacement and took the first exit that would get me headed in the general direction of home and out of there, even though it added miles to the trip. Have a safe journey home....

As a long haul coast to coast truck driver in Canada and the US I can relate to the challenges and feelings of being away from home for extended periods. Things that can alter are moods can be summarized in the acronym H.A.L.T. Hungry, angry, lonely, tired. Any and all of these things will effect are effectiveness while driving. Your plan to incorporate more rest days while traveling New Zealand is a good one. Cheers!

Agree with some other comments about the blandness and sameness of today's modern cities, it's why sharing all the smaller places on this trip has been a treat. Always best to get off the motorways.

The neighbor next door had a Lada estate back in the mid 70's. Came with a tool kit with which you take the whole car apart something that was required regularly.
I drove a Lada once, it felt as if what ever you touched with hands or feet was not connected to anything else.(exit door right very fast)
Ah. The Hungarian fruiting Lada bush. Two varieties; Blancus Estateicus and Ferrous Projecticum. You prempted my comment that you do need to explore more and have more time to yourself on these trips!

Great footage of old Ladas, a rare sight even here in Poland. Daewoo Matiz is still about but not as many as a couple of years back. There is also the mini Daewoo Tico, which I'm sure you're familiar with - not sure if sold in the UK. We had one until recently.
Great selection of cars in the field, would be nice to restore/recommison any of them each have character of their own.

I almost got a tremor in a very special place seeing that Golf and that late model renault 5.
By far the best part of Austria is the Tyrol region. It's jaw-droppingly beautiful. Salzburg is lovely.You've got Bavaria to the north and Italy to the south, it's a great place to have a base. I've never been to Vienna, but then I'm not really 'into' cities so it's no great miss. I much prefer peace and quiet. Rural roads, small, quaint towns and villages. :-)

Many years ago, I drove my cousin's Mini just after it had been repaired by the local dealership. Slid my long legs under the steering wheel and the entire wheel and column lifted and disconnected from the splined shaft on the rack. The dealership had refitted the column with the bolt already in, and it was sitting on the end of the spline instead of in the groove. Could have been very nasty, but luckily it happened at very low speed.
Will never get that Matiz obsession but nice work!
The first generation Shoguns/Pajeros and whatever other names they had in different markets, had round headlights, so the square units on the Galloper are, presumably, Hyundai parts...

Listening to your comments about doing NZ differently, totally agree. I don't know how long you are going to be over here, we emigrated here from the UK 14 years ago, but don't try and be to ambitious. What I mean by that is stop in a location for a couple of days to give you time to look around, other wise you are simply driving to get to your room for the night to leave the next day to get to the next stop. We are in Wellington, if you have any questions about NZ, feel free to ask.

My mother won a competition in take a break magazine in the early 90's and it was a holiday to vienna.
They got spending money as well and she went with the husband.
That white statue they took a photo in front of that haha.
They said it was alright when thay came back,but i wondered later on if many people entered the competition lol.

Vienna is supposedly the spy capitol of the world , that would explain the no pictures / number plate thing . As for travelling, the well known song put it best " its oh so nice to go travelling but its so much nicer yes it's so much nicer to come home " . Its a good job you can't here me singing it as I write it 😁 .
I'm not surprised you found central Vienna not to be to your taste but having lived in the suburbs I've come across a plethora of Hubnutty cars over they years. In fact a former Austrian roommate used to keep a Rover 200 on the edge of town that he would use to drive home on the weekends. He was fond of them having done some work experience at Rover while at university.
The city is much more relaxed and down to earth outside of the first district - some areas just blend into the forest. Austria is a more egalitarian country than the UK (although Austrians are more standoffish until you have befriend them) and there's a more obvious communal spirit which means there's a lot of free outdoor events without the heavy handed security needed in the UK, and plenty of hippy friendly places to go out - particularly in some of the more relaxed districts like the 2nd and 6th or some of the tiny heurigen (wine pubs) in the hills or fields.
The overly punitive privacy laws are a weird thing to get my head around as it's so different to the UK. When the far right leader of the Freedom Party died in 2006 it took a German newspaper to expose a private life that contrasted sharply with his public image. And again it was German publications that brought down the current government in 'Ibiza-gate' by secretly filming politicians making corrupt promises. Given the astounding amount of corruption exposed in recent years in regional government too I can't help but think the Austrian press is muzzled by considerations of privacy and deference. It's interesting that the country finally allowed the US mega corporation Google to introduce street view but still muzzles its citizens rights. I've never encountered any problems videoing in the city streets on foot or bike, but I don't get to do much driving. In fact that's one of the reasons that i like your channel. I inherited my grandad's Austin Metro 1.3 at school and then went abroad after university. I still pine for it but it has rusted away.
If you ever go back to Vienna I'm happy to give some tips. The tram museum in the 3rd district is awesome for trams and buses. There's loads of interesting locations for car reviews and I can even point you out to a really weird atmospheric area where a road junction off the A23 near the centre of the city is closed to road traffic yet not really closed off properly at all. It's possible to have a look this ghost junction in an 'urban explorer' kind of way.
If you want to fix that steering column issue for ever get a Ami-8 (at a scrap yard) steering column and cut the lower universal joint and weld it to your column,the original arrangement break loose cause it too stiff bushing at dash support,and cause body is not too stiff to support the flexions. Here in my country they sell too the splined end only to cut and weld on your column.
Ian, this is the only trip to Europe that I have ever regretted not making. I feel like I'm seeing everything I would want to see (except for my personal obsession with mid-60s Opels.)
A place you might enjoy is Costa Rica, if you like the tropics. There is no classic Japanese magazine because many 25, 40, even a few 50-year-old Japanese cars are daily drivers. Also Gallopers. Lots of Gallopers.
You had the Trans Sport correctly as a Pontiac. It, like the Vauxhall-Opel Sintra was manufactured at GM Doraville, near Atlanta. Most were equipped with a thirsty 3.4l V6 making about 180 horsepower, and had an unenviable crash test rating.

Hello, Hubnut. I agree with you about Vienna, somehow it's all too tidy, lovely buildings but seems to lack character.
I also agree with you about our part of Wales, it is Heaven, I'm South and West of you, about 35 minutes and just like you, I'm 12 miles from the nearest shop. If you see a blue Skoda Fabia flash the lights, it's me.

Vienna (like Zurich in Switzerland) is a sterile place full of monuments to a past glory and people too afraid to be themselves. Not surprising you felt down and uncomfortable there but stick to smaller places and Austria is great. Know what you mean about being travel weary - sleeping in your own bed after weeks away is one of life's great joys. Glad that knock has been banished - I used to wince every time I heard it. Hublot - great stall name if you ever take up car booting :-) .

Gday Ian, loving the Captain Grumpy tour de jour but here we go, interesting fact! If you were in Australia, hopped into an Elli look alike in Sydney and drove to Perth, lets say, you would cover a distance of 3,993.7 kilometers without getting your feet wet OR leaving the country! Now that, by the way is a one way journey! Be good to yourself and Elli, have fun and of course, pshtooo, to you!
Oh your heading to NZ soon then? Oh you will like it there, main roads often turn into dirt tracks, you can drive for 100s of miles and not see a soul, then get stuck behind 1000 sheep! i spent the millenium in NZ and had only had my drivers license for a few months before we headed to NZ, we stayed on the North Island, xmas BBQ on the beach with 43 degrees heat, and we covered so much ground in 6 weeks, it was such an awesome adventure, and the people there are just the sweetest, Kiwis are such fun people, well mannered, but they speak their mind which i thoroughly approve of! I often think about returning but my god parent has now passed away, she was the reason for my initial visit, and it wont be the same without her madness!
You'll be amazed what you find in the middle of nowhere. I'm confident that your Kingpin will hold up all the way back to Wales.
Not that grumpy. Vienna did look dull. With regards the steering I remember when the spline's on my 2cv steering shaft stripped! I suspect due to that same bolt working loose. It was, to say the least, extremely frightening when you are driving along and suffer extreme under steer, or for that matter no steer!
I like it when you go look around the town and other things. Just walking is fun. If I was the border guard, I'd ask you all kinds of questions about your car, and want to look under the hood. (Bonnet).
I went to Vienna with my Father as a teen in the nineties and yes grand is fitting but a bit smug also perhaps. I recall that my pocket money wouldn't actually stretch to any shopping. Just that big international city thing going on.
The rear tailights on the 5 door Lada probably aftermarket, thats why is the indicator is clear.
cmdarb141 actually these are standard tail lights as fitted in the Hungarian market.....yellow bulbs!

I have lived in Germany over 20 years and Austria is IMHO the most beautiful country in Europe (yes I've seen many of the other countries) however you need to be out and about in the small towns and villages and lakes, my favorite place in Austria is Gmunden but there are many many beautiful lakeside towns and villages ,just stay away from the cities unless it is Salzburg
Sounds like Hungary - never understood the attraction of Budapest but the little towns and villages are lovely

I also love Austria, Innsbruck is a beautiful city as well. But for me, nothing can beat Switzerland in beauty in Europe... just jaw-droppingly gorgeous (outside the big cities of course).

Hearing what you were saying about being Travel Weary….
When we do a long run, we have a destination in mind, but we stop as often and for as long as we choose as we encounter interesting spots and if that means we don’t get as far as originally intended, so be it.
Also consider making more use of the Motorways, the cost and boredom of doing so might be offset by greater time to enjoy interesting places and greater enjoyment from the back road sections for using them less.
Mazda Bongo and the Ford version is a Ford Freda heavens above who named them . I love the Lada and currently after a Niva great cars .

I'm assuming you were in Vienna yesterday or the day before - am joining the people who recommended the countryside (was out and about with my own old car today - as far away from Vienna as I can). I avoid driving through Vienna like the plague, it can be a right pain in an older car. Well at least Ellie is performing well.

I found this online. Apparently this is the case that brought about the rulings about taking photographs, etc in Austria.
“A man who owns a residential building was being sued for wage payments by contractors who did work on the building. The contractors' lawyer was meeting with the owner in that building for some work inspection. The owner pulls out a camera out of the blue and takes a picture of the lawyer. Lawyer asks why his picture was taken. Owner says "for fun." He's asked to delete the photo, but after asking his own attorneys, refuses. Lawyer decides to sue.
Both the Court of First Instance and the Court of Appeals sided with the defendant, saying it's incomprehensible why a man cannot take pictures of people present in his own home, which was the case the here.
But then the Supreme Court sidestepped the homeowner's legal right into his 'intent.' He admitted that he took the picture 'for fun.' And they saw that this could extend into him altering the image (basically photoshop) to his own benefit, and in that case, a person's right to their own image (Recht am eigenen Bild) would apply.
This is still fine until you go to the consequence. As there is no difference between a public space and a privace space over there, the ruling extended to public spaces. And to other media forms as well (you can't video tape or do an audio recording of other people.)
On a more positive note, someone would still have to prove 'intent.' Meaning, they would need to prove that you aimed to take their picture specifically. (and they're not just passerbys in the shot)
If they ask you to delete the shot, there's little leeway to it. You'd just have to do it. “

It would seem there is no issue with passers by being caught in photos or video but you should delete them if asked to do so.

Dig the privacy laws, could do with some of that here in the UK.
If that idiotic law was ever to be enforced, no one would be able to take any photos or videos anywhere and post it anywhere publicly accessible without pixellating every single detail out. Utterly impractical and completely unenforceable. I mean, what's the police expected to do? Go through every video anyone posts that's filmed in Austria or every picture anyone posts of twitter or facebook or instagram or whatever, and then track down the person who took it and persecute them with the full majesty of the law? Not to mention whether Austrian laws are enforceable anywhere outside Austria.

It's said that there's no perception of privacy in public and to a point that's correct as we can all see what everybody else is doing when we're out and about. However, that doesn't mean that we have to be filmed going about our daily lives and promptly paraded over the web.. Especially when no consent is given. It is for all intent and purpose ill mannered and rude to do so.
So, it's not the concept of no perception of privacy in public that's at fault but, rather since the advent of smart phones and selfie sticks people's overall perception of privacy is at fault. People just don't respect other people's right to privacy, the right to be NOT filmed and slapped all over the internet.
I can remember a time when people, not only respected the rights of others to privacy, but also defended those rights, which is what the Austrian authorities seem to be doing here. Fair play to them.
Failing to protect our rights to privacy is, in effect, giving up on privacy whole sale.
It's only an "idiotic law" if you have no issue in violating the rights of others!
They still sold Gallopers in Spain when I was there in 2000.
I Don't suppose you know anybody with an Austin ambassitor? I hear there are only 17 left in existence and I always liked them. It would be cool to see a road test. If anyone would do one it would be you lol. Apparently only a handful of itals left as well. Would be good to see a comparison to the marina.
I saw a Galloper in "running" order. I never recognized nuffing else in Austria, not even a horse or a horse box.
So, how much temptation was there to bring that Lada Estate back to the UK then? :P
