In Rebels Recon #1.06, StarWars.com talks with the creators of the Star Wars Rebels episode "Out of Darkness," looks at the character-design process, and shows a special preview of “Empire Day.”
"Out of Darkness" finds Sabine growing frustrated with Hera and Kanan’s secrecy. The Mandalorian demands to accompany Kanan on a rendezvous with a mysterious contact, but the two find that their meeting place is infested with deadly fyrnocks. They escape, and Sabine learns to have faith in Hera’s leadership.
At the Art and Science of Lucasfilm panel in partnership with the San Francisco Film Society Education, the Star Wars Rebels team spoke with local students. Art director Kilian Plunkett showed the design process for Chopper and Kanan; it begins with 2-D illustrations, and both characters went through significant evolutions. Chopper originally had a very Artoo-like dome, and Kanan did not always have his trademark ponytail and goatee. Sculpted maquettes finalize the process, showing how the character looks in three dimensions.
In “Out of Darkness,” Hera and Sabine take center stage. Pablo Hidalgo tells Lucasfilm’s Andi Gutierrez that Hera is “the true believer of the show. She has the absolute unquestioning faith in the cause of what they’re fighting for.” Dave Filoni, executive producer, thinks she’s interesting because she’s a mother figure, but also has a pilot’s swagger and toughness.
Sabine has her own strengths. “I think Sabine’s really good at thinking on her feet,” says co-creator and associate producer Carrie Beck. “While other people may get caught up in the moment…she’s able to dive in head first and figure her way out of a situation.” Hidalgo asserts that she’s also highly educated, and that will be explored.
For this week's Twitter question, @a_targaryen asks about what the Empire has in store for the kyber crystals it’s after. Hidalgo says that as kyber crystals are used to focus energy to create a lightsaber blade, giant kyber crystals could be used to create a very dangerous weapon…

Anyone else catch the brief glimpse of the Death Star when Pablo was talking about the Kyber Crystals? Is that just me, or did anyone else see that?
this show seriously gets better with every episode
loved the subtle death star
We didn't see anything. Move along... Move along
I saw that too! I thought I was the only one
There was nothing subtle about that whole run when they were obviously talking about the death star...we didnt really need the picture
etheangel2220
it's called comedy
StrikeTeam7 only by VERY few people
I guessed about the kyber crystals when we saw Ani and Obi dealing with one in that unfinished Clone Wars episode. I like that the idea resurfaced here in Rebels in a different way. I never knew that the Death Star was essentially shooting eight lightsaber beams, and this thing with the empire hunting down kyber crystals for that purpose is a great idea in my opinion. =)
The organization that exterminated the Jedi has a super-weapon that is essentially a giant lightsaber. How ironic. :)
legomaster1378 Just to Clarify, Kyber crystals Super weapon (not only limit to lightsaber only) already existed at the war between the Jedi &Sith's War, but it was long forgotten after the Jedi Won, now the empire (Sith) is trying to source back this kind of Super weapon.
John Chan Hush! That's all Legacy stuff now, so it doesn't matter ;-)
(Sweeps the entire history of the Star Wars universe under his Disney rug.)
***** Thankfully. (wipes sweat from brow)
***** Watch it man. I think you mean "the The Clone Wars series". Whoever decided to have two animated series with extremely similar names was clearly having an off day. :P
4:54 Nice ;-)
I wonder...does the Empire know about Hera? She's the only one of the group that Minister Tua did not report, and she's the only one that hasnt come face to face with the empire.
YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I Love Rebels Recon!!! I Miss It So Much I wish They did something like this for The New Shows. I LOVE THIS SHOW SOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!
4:53 ... LoL as if we didn't notice haha ^^ The Inquisitor's TIE fighter is pretty badass ; a mix between Darth Vader's TIE advanced X1 and Darth Maul's Sith Interceptor, but I suppose that, due to its size, it needs a hyperspace ring to travel over long distances.
Gregor will be in Rebels! He is the hidden contact!
first
I love star wars rebels and this episode was amazing
Subliminal message!
Damn, Inquisitor's got some sick armor.
Gosh, we had a total Fight Club insertion there *wink wink*
Awesome! I love this show!
The inquisitors helmet looks like the chicken Boba Fett from family guy
Guess that split second shot of the Death Star in Pablo's question confirms that the Empire is hunting down giant Kyber crystals to power up the Death Star's super laser.
I just want to see a clone trooper or a battle droid in the show. Something more than a helmet or a ship or even an abandoned base. Something that will connect the two shows even more.
First comment! Great video! I love the series so far! Keep it up, and as always, may the Force be with you, always!
Yea I hope on this ''Empire day'' the storm troopers hit something for once.
I liked this episode
when did sabine change her hair color?
1:26 Lupin the Jedi
We want Ashoka. Please!!!!!!!!!!!!
i saw that death star image 4:54
Digging the Inquisitor's helmet.
Great episode, I loved it. P.s, I hope we see lando in the show soon.
fortunately, you will
***** I love Andi's collection of T-shirts...... link for where to get them myself. I'm Aussie so an international shipping way of getting them would be a bonus thanks =)
Hey! A lot of my shirts are from heruniverse.com! They were kind enough to send me a bunch of awesomely cute tops to wear. - Andi
Thanks Andi,
I love the shop Her Universe. I'm waiting on them getting the Asajj Ventress top back in stock at the moment and I'm wearing the Vader dress as I type this very comment =)
I'm loving your Rebels Recon videos
Want to say this was my new favorite episode of the series. Putting Hera and Sabine upfront is genius as they are, easily, the two strongest characters on the show. The other thing I love I that putting these two upfront pulls the focus away from Ezra. Rebels only weakness is that it can feel like the Ezra show, taking from the other great characters. This episode corrected that superbly. Only had one gripe. They reused a shot of character action and animation. Don't want to ever see that again. The animation team is better than that.
Come on. What happened in this episode? Nothing, literally nothing.
Thypot M Funny, because your comment is pretty similar to Sabine's attitude in this episode, she wants to know and see everything right now and can't see that they are moving pieces slowly for a greater cause.
The episodes we've seen so far are basically introducing the audience to these new characters, one by one, showing us their personalities, their motivations, their interactions and roles within the team. This episode was clearly Sabine's introduction, set in a relatively standard mission for this team. I wouldn't go that far to say that it's strong character development because it's still a kid show, but it works quite well so far in my opinion.
Captain Viggo It is not necessary to build an entire episode to introduce some characters. That episode contains no plot. Moreover, we don't have to discover each character; we know yet that there are superficial heroes like in all other childish series. Garazeb is the big one, but with a big heart; Ezra is the young and mischievous boy, but with a great talent; Hera is the kindly mother of the troop; Kanan is a kind of father, but with no leading abilities; Sabine is the hotheaded girl, adventurous, who will fall in love with Ezra. And the Empire is the Evil. We already know the story.
Thypot M YOU already know that because you're older than the audience target and have already seen many kid shows in your time. It's normal for stories made for young audiences to rely on archetypal characters, especially in the Star Wars franchise that has been built the same way. You could say the exact same thing about Episode IV: a young farmer who dreams of adventure, an old magician, a princess in distress, a big villain with a dark armor, etc...
Even The Clone Wars started the same way, including classic stories that we've already seen many times before.
Try to watch the show with a child's eyes, and wait for it to mature along with its audience, like TCW did before it.
And it's not true that this episode had no plot. It was not very complicated for sure, but there was a plot, containing elements that will surely have a bigger part in the future of the show.
Captain Viggo No, I don't think it is the same thing for Episode IV. The Clone Wars and Rebels, for example, present exaggerated characters, without deeper psychology or complexity.
A show can be childish, I don't care, and contrary to what you may think, it does not annoy me. It is not the point. So far, Rebels is almost stupid and caricatural.
We don't want to see these derisory adventures which always end well for the heroes. There should be some complexity, because you can be a child and have the ability to think.
Stop with the stupid questions! :O
Feel free to send us your own!
You need to change it to UA-cam comments. You'll get better comments. Keep up the great work!
Nick Cards youtube comments better.WTF?!
Shane Waters Why would I waste a # on this junk show?? :D
Does anyone else notice all those EU comics behind Dave Filoni? So awesome!
Anyone notice (SPOILER ALERT) how Ezras dad in the latest episode kinda sounded like a Clone Trooper?
This Episode was a great character and lore episode...Give Rebels 30 minutes per Episode damn it....most of the other episodes suffer from this unworkable time limit...
Even though the animation/art isn't as good as TCW was at its best (currently on S4), it is still way better than most other CGI shows from the past few years. If you don't believe me, just take a look at shows like Fanboy & Chumchum, Planet Sheen, Robot & Monster, Mickey Mouse Club House and TMNT 2012 (show is still good though).
I have a theroy . the supplier is echo think about it
1.the place is a clone base but it might of been taken over before it could of been the citedel
2.ridonum was in the r2d2 episodes and was controlled by the cis
3.echo didn't die but how would he escape
4. It is dark 99% of the time like the citedel
Great theory man, but I don't think Disney wants any bits of The Clone Wars.
Not true in the hanger you can see arc-170 and gunships. But I see were you are coming from
I understand, but I don't think they want to add anything clone wars, the viewers might not like it to :P
Nick Cards The viewers will love it, pretty much every Rebels watcher has seen TCW. And most CW watchers don't watch Rebels because there's nobody from CW in it.
Does anyone find this show kind of well...boring? They said it was going to be more fun than The Clone Wars, but they haven't really done anything :/ I mean we got some good character development, but in a show clearly aimed at the younger demographic it's just not fun. Like what have they done so far? Stole some fruit? Stole some guns? Killed some vampire dogs? Nothing really memorable, Clone Wars had the balance of maturity and fun perfected by seasons 3+
"Empire Day" was such an awesome episode!
Welcome to the 5 under club. How tough are you?
I agree with one person this show is boring! All they do is grab cargo and sell it. Plus I hate chopper, Blue hair Aladin, and the big gorilla. The only exciting thing about this episode was seeing the ships from the clone wars.
In the clone wars you got to see huge battles, a lot of lightsaber battle. See the republic being torn apart. You got to see a lot of bounty hunters, Pirates, Sith, etc. Dame Disney why did you have to do this to us!
Its called having a smaller budget to work with :)
It's called trying to tell a completely different type of story. :)
***** Too bad we haven't seen a lot of that either.
Very true. The characters are not endearing at all. The whole series is so far a bad sequel of The Clone Wars.
It's called being lazy. They just take the premise of original trilogy with a Ralph Macquarie "tribute" then a dash of Disney cliches and whip out this under developed kiddy garbage
Just a theory, but I think Hera could be that Twi'lek child that befriended the clones in season 1 of Clone Wars.
I still don't get how the small ship always docks looking forward, but whenever they are inside it, it looks like if it is looking backwards
I really enjoyed this episode I don't know why so many people hate itbut I think all those people that hated are on a mission to smash Star Wars every time They make a changeThe show is just getting better and better and better and empire day was actually really good episode two
Filoni looks so bored and I wish the Clone Wars arc with the Kyber Crystal had been fully animated.
I could have loved this episode. But I cant because pink armour ruins the seriousness for me.
rebels is so boring.. there always the same charcaters. clone wars was better
Blah clone wars sucks it only talks about different characters dat i dont know of i like this one better
Angel Lucas
why not both?
StrikeTeam7 Yeah that's right. Both of them are good in their own ways
People REALLY need to stop comparing the two shows. They're very different in many fundamental ways.
It would be cool if fulcrum was captain Rex from the clone wars
The kyber crystals were used for the laser in the death star, if you looked carefully in the video it gave you a clue what they were used for.
Man, I wish there was a good star wars show.... This thing is so f'ing painful.
somebody gonna ask about the fett clones like rex and echo
#Rebelrecon what's with Siveans madilorian helmet
this episode was pretty boring
I watched empire day part one and it was epic
Cheap trick again in teaser. Hate it..
I can't get enough of Andi !!!
like rebels.. but a shitty ep
Man I really wish we would get an episode about Kanans backstory. That would actually be pretty interesting.
But seriously.... Is Kanan going to just block laser bolts with that lightsaber or is he gonna get serious and decapitate someone?
Yeah that would turn things to the better, but maybe the old days of clone wars are over and we won't see anymore serious action...
tobanga feufeu Maybe your right. But who knows, we even might be lucky enough to see Darth Vader choke the inquisitor for all of his failures. :P
Heeey Dashie! How you doin'?
tobanga feufeu welcome to Disney :(
TheFrozen Taco guys, it's the same director of clone wars, i think if we give him enough time to build up, he might make up for everything
I have a very strong feeling that Fulcrum is actualy Ahsoka, if Fulcrum's voice is being mixed up, you can hear that Fulcrum his...(Actualy her) voice is female...Also, the marks on the crates match with the markings on Ahsoka her face. I'm pretty sure Fulcrum is Ahsoka...
ya it all adds up if we watched the episode and researched it; and I hope it really is her cuz it will have more of a connection to the clone wars series
I LOVE YOU SABINE WREN ♥♥♥
Clone wars come back
Space mommmmm ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Andi!!!
IT THE DEATH STAR
stop butchering star wars
and for the love of fuck, stop trying to make chopper happen... chopper will never happen
So Hera got swagger?
Swag
