I learned a lot about how to approach catching any new specie of fish from this video. 👏 First and foremost and wherever possible, ask someone who's scoring big time then follow suit as best as possible. Next, learn how the new specie bites, and this can take a long time and a lot of loss of bait until you get a feel for the strike. I'm not sure, but I think reflexes play a large part in quickly setting the hook for this specie of fish so it's a skill that has to be honed well. Most of all, I enjoyed seeing your Dad patiently trying to land a few; he was very cool about it. 👍 To me, seeing the actual time and effort and learning curve is everything so thanks for not editing out the "struggle" in this video. ✨
I've got my fiddler crab farm setup for the winter. Usually have about 200 at any time. I absolutely love sheepshead fishing in Jax and St Aug. Your friend is doing a style of sheep fishing I've never tried. I've got my method in 3-9 feet of water that works but I love trying new methods to catch them.
lose the fiddlers and just scrab seawalls or pillars for barnacles theres tons of barnacle/mud crabs which they will always bite before anything else its there main diet i catch hogs all the time in east coast (titusville/merrit) simple
Great video I finally caught my first one the last trip to Florida. Always wanted to catch one and never could. I free lined a piece of shrimp down and got lucky one morning. Everyone else was hammering them on crabs.
@@HeySkipper I believe that’s what they were using. It was the locals and they had buckets of them. They were super small, like half the size of a dime. They gave me a few to try. They were catching Giants sheepshead. I think mine was about an inch of the legal one. They were pulling in ones that made mine look like a baby. Boy I tell you they sure taste good. I filet mine and pan fried along with a few sand perch, and a mangrove snapper. The sheepshead was my favorite for taste. I was told to use long xl shank hooks so I wouldn’t get bit off. I used the opposite. A super short shank

I remember going fishing with my father; I kept catching fish and he wasn’t catching anything. I NEVER FELT SO HEARTBROKEN. More heartbroken than the other day when I had the answer to finally win something nice on your live chat and I didn’t win. Haha. I ordered from you what I needed anyway. Seriously, I hated the days that I was catching fish and my dad didn’t. Next month he’ll be 92 and I wish he was here. I would trade 10 years of my life to fish with him one more year.
Another trick I learned when catching sheep’s head is use a dropshot rig and whenever you drop it down put tension on your line and whenever you feel your weight lift set the hook

Hey Skip, I’m gonna let you in on a great secret if you’re going to fish sheep head try crickets they work unbelievably good. Also you’re not gonna believe this green peas is a kilobyte for them. Try it.
@ they don’t probably work they work 100%. I caught 40 sheepshead with crickets one after the other and another thing is Green peas. I got plenty of them on green peas. You won’t believe that they love them.
@ hey Skip, a cricket’s are very cheap. Buy yourself a box of crickets put one underwater with a sinker and you’ll see it takes an hour for them to die. They jump all around all over the place underwater they are unbelievable bait. Believe me I caught 40 sheep head with crickets. I also caught them with green peas. Try it you’ll like it.
@ just watch where you hook the cricket so that you don’t kill it with the hook if you go high up towards the head around where the neck area would be all you gotta do is just pinch it on it lightly cause they inhale them damn things
Skip..i was about to at use a smaller hook but then you figured it out. Here's another tip. Use a small 2 or 4 circle hook. I use the 4s to catch porgies. They work well on sheepshead to
Hey Skip, when fiddler crabs aren't available I'll use clams and wrap them up in cheese cloth so the bait last longer. Best rig is the knocker rig and dispatch the fish using the ikejime method.
I’ve had more luck with shrimp here in Florida for sheepshead than anything else. Also great for flounder. If you can get out to the jetty on the plantation at St. George Island, that’s some of the best sheepshead fish I’ve ever done also by the way, try to use a wire lead will help from them two went through your line. They got a powerful ass bite.
What a cool method to catch sheepshead. I'm definitely gonna try this at Massey's Landing when they come back in.....Nice sheepies guys !!! Branden what size and type of hook were using?
Over the 30 plus years here around Marco island this is still one of my favorite backwater species to target, the next few months are prime Sheapshead Season, countless canals, docks and bridges to explore.

Hey Hi Skipper luv urs stuff❤❤❤❤just curious are those cooked mussel bait too mushy delicate or soft to pin on hook...coz if it's not then I suggest no cotton but just weave mussels in n out n around hook few tyms you wont miss...bait it too bulky wen doubled..hook doesn't seem too proud..plus we fisherman here in SA always try not to use cotton wen possible cos we get far better hook ups my brother🎉❤❤❤gud luck.. BOTTOM LINE..IS...TIGHT LINES😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉🎉
You need to use spawn sac’s (mesh) so they get the taste and are unable to steal your bait. It works much better than just wrapping your line around the bait because they can still steal your bait
Forget those bells. The fun part is feeling those convicts trying to steal your bait. Hold the rod and hold it lighty and focus, concentrate and be still. Can't really wait for the second go around, because you're late and the bait is gone. Lift the rod up after a second you feel that slight nibble, feel weight then set the hook. If it's a area with smallish sheeps use small bait, pick the smalller fiddler crabs, so they put it inside the mouth and not bite it off the hook constantly stealing your bait.
I fish sheeps in Florida all the time and limit out regularly. I do it differently, I use a heavy jig head, or if I use an egg sinker I only have 3 inches of line until the hook.I don't use circle hooks because I'm going to eat them, everything else I use a circle hook. Next, I drop it right next to the piling, keep the pole in my hand with line tight. On the second bump, set the hook, then go home and cook.
Captain here: When it comes to light bait fish, use your index finger to touch the braid line. feel it then hook it right away if you feel slightly pull from fish
I've always been curious about something how do you tell from a fish from the waves cause even if I have a finger or 2 on the fishing line I can never tell if it's a fish or not is there any video on this that I can watch? And also in my state NC we have sheepshead cause one time I've accidentally gotten stuck on the pier itself 😅and a local fisherman helped me out and on the end of the hook was a barnacle and I kid you not he said these words "Y'know Those Are Great For Sheepshead"

@@HeySkipper I posted a comment on one of your recent Facebook comments. I also learned from watching UA-cam videos explaining it. It can be harder to run the wire down on smaller sized fish because the hole is smaller. There are different sized wires for different sized fish.
Cooked muscles? I am not going to waste cooked muscles on catching fish. Keep it simple, chum for them with barnacles, then ACTUALLY use the barnacles as bait on a size 8 hook.
HINT: You are using too large hooks. Drop hook size to #2 down to #4 and your hook sets will multiply. #6 hooks often are all that works. Give slack and hook on the line run out. Try this then thank me. Hooking Sheepheads is "child play", guaranteed.

Fiddlers are the most common sheeps bait! I’ll try them next time and see how they stack up against the mussels
I'd recommend getting an ike jime shinkei jime kit to make your fish taste better. Brain, bleed, back, bath.

You fish sheepshead like fishing for spots or crookers. They nibble on the bait.
Does wrapping the bait in the thread technically add more trash to the water? Not hating, just curious
I felt like it’s the easiest cu u always know where they are gonna be
When I caught mine, you almost have to be holding your pole and jerk it as soon as you feel the bite.
