You often need to join two or more straps together; for example if you need extra length for a snatch, want to reduce the included angle with tree trunk protectors, or your anchor point is a long way away. Here I show you four ways to join two straps, but there's one best way...then I prove it works!

Suffered the old bound straps together once. Was then shown and old bushy hack which was to take to the straps with a rubber mallet. Set them on something forgiving (matt, timbre block etc) and go to town, rotating the knot as you belt it with the mallet.

Great advice as always. Best bet is to be prepared and have enough soft shackles for any situation.

Always makes me chuckle watching people trying to separate 2 straps or even ropes tied in a similar self-tightening manner.

When you are having to do 6-7 snatches with 2 fully loaded landcruisers to get unstuck you’ll be wishing you put an extra soft shackle in when trying to undo the strops. Tip though smash the knot against a rock to loosen it.

Always the teacher, but to be a teacher you must be a student first. Thankyou for sharing what youve learnt Rob. Bonus points for that magazine idea, ill definitely be putting two in my recovery kit.

Amongst other things I work as a crane operator/rigger, have done for years. Choking a strap or sling like shown in the first use definitely isn't ideal, not sure what the exact effect can be, no doubt its worse than the proper choke, but even in all these cases where Rob is choking it properly you still have a reduction to your WLL of about 20%. a direct join to a hard shackle is 1:1 but obviously unless you have weight on the straps you have a serious hazard if it breaks.

Soft shackles are a no brainer. Magazine method is very old fashion. Always keep an extra soft shackle and you don't have to go through this whole ordeal.

I used to take newspaper to help light a fire. Now days I read my news on a Samsung tablet so I no longer have newspapers (or magazines). :)
