Gorgeously done! It always strikes me how "modern" and impressive baroque music is when it is performed historically informed. Clear, sharp, significant, powerful.
This was quite an era for trumpet music when this was written. "Te Deum","Trumpet Voluntary",Trumpet Tune" and "The Trumpet Shall Sound". There is something far more noble sounding from this era then the modern era trumpet ("Fanfare For the Common Man" could be an exception" though").
This is the all time best Prélude en Rondeau from Te Deum (Charpentier). This is a French dance, not a March like Händel. This is a pice written probably between 1688 to 1698, the french Baroque music from this time (years 1600 to 1750) have some dance character. Rondaeu is a France baroque dance. Enjoy the Music, and The rest of the work is sublim too!!!
I know it's been a year, but I'd like to ask what you thought was wrong about the tuning? Checking with Audacity, it seems like they're playing with A=395 Hz which is less than a semitone lower than A=415 Hz which is widely considered to be a "common baroque tuning". The reason why it might not be exactly 415 Hz is that many baroque instruments can't really be tuned. Baroque trumpets for example have one harmonic series of notes - with some fine-tuning available with vent holes - and that's what you get. The tuning of a natural trumpet depends on the length of the trumpet's tube, and the speed of sound in air. The length of the trumpet varies slighly with temperature, and likewise the speed of sound changes with temperature. Because of this, the tuning of this kind of ensemble is determined by what the tuning of the trumpets happens to be at the location. Woodwind instruments have similar limitations, and even though modern woodwind instruments can be tuned (to an extent), their tuning can change as the performance goes on and air temperature changes. So, while the "agreed upon" baroque standard is A=415 Hz, in practice the playing conditions can affect this quite a bit. Slight variances are not "wrong" as such. This is one of the reasons why full symphonic orchestras generally "take their tuning" from oboe instead of playing some specific frequency through a speaker, and usually have a short "tuning check" between long pieces, too. It's quicker and easier for the whole orchestra to tune their instruments to the woodwinds, rather than have the woodwind players also tune their instruments to a specific frequency. That, and the oboe's tone happens to be such that it's easy for pretty much all other instruments to "catch" and tune them to match the pitch. And the meter sounds good to me. It's a cheerful dance, and it doesn't sound too fast to me. I would rather call it an artistic choice and enjoy the music, than get bothered about the meter being "wrong" in some way...
Una vera e propria schifezza questa esecuzione. Sembra una musica da circo equestre con gli strumentisti che interpretano il ruolo dei pagliacci! VERGOGNA!
The REAL hymn of Europe!
Timpani takes about half of the space there. And it's brilliant. The timpanist is playing without a fault whatsoever, absolute perfection.
This version conducted by Gester is the best going: get the album if you can it is well worth it.
I LOVE the sound of the serpent bass notes!! WOW!
