@krystufekrobin1 The singers don't sing "france" because it is in latin. If you mean "latin with a french pronunciation", probably because it's a pretty old record (1976) and the historically informed performances art was moving the very first steps at the time. I don't agree that a bit more down-tempo is necessarily a bad thing, especially with such a sumptuous work.

The music of Lully marks the end of the French Renaissance and the beginning of the classical period. Lully, an Italian by birth, called on his formation to create the "style versaillais". Lully himself also created the 'suite', the very notion and arrangement of a succession of pieces of various moods, may of them dance music, which in turn became the basis for the symphony, so he was undeniably modern. However, his music still shows its roots, which is why it is so 'dynamic'. The Renaissance, and previously the Renascimiento, had certainly accustomed us to scores that changed tempo abruptly, to mark or follow the mood set by the 'livret'. That is why the music of this motet follows the wording. Where they speak of the divine, the music is heavenly and where they are warlike, so is the music. By the way, the words are those of Psalm 51, if memory serves. A perfect example of the transition from heavenly to warlike is heard in the transition from "Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus" to "Dominus Deus Sabaoth", Latin for "Holy, holy, holy. The Lord God Sabaoth [meaning, 'of War', one of the ancient Hebrew names of the one better known, nowadays, as Yahwe, Jehovah, or simply God]. The music for the sanctus is sung by a Manécanterie, a choir of young boys, gifted with high pitched, ethereal vocal organs, while the very martial passage for "Dominus..." is sung by both the adult and child choirs accompanied by an orchestra with heavy emphasis on the role of trumpets, which are military instruments used to sound the charge, but also to celebrate glory. Although the score was sub-titled "Gloria Dei" (to the glory of God), no one at the court of Versailles was a dupe; this was composed to celebrate the nascent glory of the Sun King, who fancied himself a Warrior-King. Naturally, he never fought in any of the many wars he declared, as his precious person could not be exposed to such dangers, which may account for the fact that France has gained nothing from the death of so many young men. Nevertheless, Louis made Lully his minister of music to repay his accomplishment. It is said he asked to hear it again, a second time, right after hearing for the first time.

@krystufekrobin1 I agree about the speed. I would have play a less slow version. Concerning the language, this is in Latin, cause a Te Deum is a religious play, which says basically something like "thank you God for what you have done for us" :)

If you mean the first bust shown it is not of Lully, but King Louis XIV, by the famous Bernini. The bust has a Wikipedia page if you want to check it out. By the way, where are you from? :)

I love Lully's music very much, but this performance sounds not good, in my opinion. I prefer the performance of Le Concert Spirituel, conducted by Hervé Niquet.
