Bob Dylan (who wrote this song) is the Shakespeare and social visionary of our times. His extraordinary use of language and thought combined with music is as important now as it was back then. With no reference to anything that sets the song in 1963, Dylan asks us not only "how many times" these things will happen, but more importantly he asks how long can we let this happen. And he leaves the questions of responsibility for us to answer. Dylan never underestimates the intelligence of his audience. All his songs ask the same thing in different ways: what do you think? how does it feel? And they ask us to answer these questions ourselves. In essence, Dylan is always asking, What is it to be human?
Love this trio. They were an American folk group formed in 1961. They had a lot of great hits such as "Puff, The Magic Dragon", "Lemon Tree", "500 Miles", "If I Had A Hammer", "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?", "Leaving On A Jet Plane", "Day Is Done". They recorded quite a few of Bob Dylan's songs such as "Blowin' In The Wind", "The Times They Are a-Changin'", "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right", "When The Ship Comes In".
I absolutely loved Peter Paul and Mary. Such beautiful harmony has never been reached. BeeGees came close...but not as in sync as this folk group. I watched every PBS special they were on...back in the 70's and 80's. All their songs are beautiful.
I agree with you. Well said. I would add the moving "Cruel War ", "Forever Young" , "The Wedding Song",and the lullabies "Hush Little Baby" "Morning Song" "All throught the night". Their harmony is exquisite.
As one of your Senior listeners, I have been around for many years and have seen all of these musicians perform. This song is from the genius mind of Bob Dylan. Sadly the social issues of the 60s are still relevant today. Peace my friends

This song has brought me to tears many times, but seeing your reaction to it is what did it for me this time. Hard to explain, but seeing two wonderful young people experience it for the first time and really GET IT lifted my spirits beyond words. Still blubbered like a baby,, but in a good way! The torch of human compassion is being passed. Honor it, run with it, and pass it earnestly along to the next generation when the time comes. The world will be better for it. Peace and Love.
A song with profound lyrics and a question for the ages. I've read that Dylan wrote this in 20 minutes in a taxicab. The lyrics are so simple that you might think "I could have written that". But, like Joan Baez once said about Dylan; "We can think it but Bob can say it", or something like that. Great reaction.
This is folk music, almost totally forgotten unfortunately. They were very popular mid to late 60s. Very good song! Probably Leaving on a Jet Plane in 69 was their biggest hit. Written by John Denver.
As a child in the 60's, this was one of my favorite songs. But more for the melody than for the lyrics. I hadn't heard this song in years. But now, listening to the lyrics, and applying them to the modern day....O.M.G. !!!!!!!
Folk music always had the deepest messages and this trio is one of the greatest folk groups from the 60's or from any era. Their's is such a wonderful rabbit hole!
I remember this song from peace marches when my brother was in Viet Nam. It always resonates, cuz my big brother, was just a kid, sent to fight in a war, he didn't want to fight in. 💔
Classic Bob Dylan song and a hit cover for these popular folk singers. The song inspired Sam Cooke to write the brilliant civil rights anthem "A Change Is Gonna Come" shortly before he died.
Growing up in the 60’s there were so many artists that were pleading for social justice and peace, we haven’t made much headway. I appreciate this music even more now than I did then.
I was born in 1973, my mum was a teenager in the 60's, so I grew up playing and listening to her records, so although I have listened to this music from that era 100's if not thousands of times, it's only from watching your reactions to them that I get a whole new appreciation from what the lyrics are actually saying. It used to be just a good song I enjoyed listening to, but now I'm paying attention to the lyrics. Thank you.
This song is so deep. Why is it that our government spends so much on killing people, instead of learning how to love. You are right, we all need a lot of prayer. Thank you and love to you.
That really is a very deep and moving song. It was before my time, but I’ve heard it all my life. It’s amazing that I’ve heard it all my life, but tonight I HEARD IT FOR THE FIRST TIME. Yes! The world does need prayer. I just love you guys. God bless you both.
I love when a song touches your spiritual side and you are both so moved. I was hearing the song again for the first time through your reactions, even though I've known it all my life, and was brought to tears again. Bob Dylan was the first musician to win the Nobel Prize, and you can see why. His lyrics are genius.
You are by far the best reactors because you cover so many incredible 60's songs. Young people think things are hard now, half the young brothers in my family were sent to the Vietnam war and never came back along with neighbors sons. These songs were so important to my parents. People do not know how tough it was in 60's
Thanks for this reaction. These simple yet profound lyrics convey so much truth and yet after 60 years their message is still not fulfilled which I guess made you sad as well as many sad. Music can move and educate so glad you can spread the message of this song. Peace.
I think on The Muppet Show the female rock and roll band lead singer has a likeness to Mary Traverse. And the man puppet singer looked like Johnny Fever from WKRP in Cincinnati but I don't know if it was purposely, or, if WKRP came after the Muppet band made their appearance on The Muppets.
Written by the great Folk Rocker singer/songwriter Bob Dylan. And done beautifully by the legendary Folk-Rock Trio of "Peter, Paul & Mary." This song was one of their greatest hits that has gone triple platinum and some. They are one of the most legendary Folk Rockers ever! Brilliant! Note: On the famous "Mach on Washington" in 1963. Where Martin Luther King made his most famous "I Got a Dream" speech. Peter Paul and Mary sung this song on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial before Martin Luther King spoke. Awesome!
I'm glad you loved this song. It taught so much as a young person. Awareness is so important young people. Thank you for the appreciation that you showed.
It was a powerful song during the Civil Rights Era. They sang it during the 1963 March On Washington when Martin Luther King delivered his "I Have A Dream" speech. I had just turned 15 and this song meshed with King's message. I took the message to heart, a lot of people didn't. Back then we wanted to fix the problem, these day they want to own the problem. Folk Music played a key role in advancing Civil Rights. Peter, Paul, and Mary bring back those days of hope and optimism.
Amen, sister! Prayer is needed indeed! Y’all got a little taste of early folk music with this one! Check out more of Peter, Paul and Mary, and also more of Bob Dylan’s stuff ( Times They Are a Changin’ ). Love to y’all from Texas! 💖🌸
Bob Dylan originally wrote and sang this Peter Paul And Mary had the same Manager as Dylan so the song was released by both for some strange reason . Dylan of course a master song writer and part of eaqual rights activist of that time .
Great reaction, it is clear you were moved by the lyrics. This song was a touchstone of the struggles of the 60s. Struggles that continue today, so many decades later. Peter, Paul & Mary, as well as Bob Dylan who wrote and also recorded this song were activists for the causes they wrote and sang about. Peter, Paul and Mary sang at the March on Washington in 1963. Mary died in 2009. Peter, Paul and Bob Dylan are still active in social justice causes today. A beautiful marriage of art and activism. Some of today's artists are speaking up and getting involved. Hopefully we can finally get to the mountaintop. Thank you for taking us along on your musical journey.

Written by Bob Dylan. Peter Paul and Mary have been in my life since the early sixties. So many great tunes but try Puff the Magic Dragon, This Land is Your Land (written by Woody Guthrie) and Day is Done to continue this rabbit hole. Enjoy.
Written by the great Bob Dylan and impeccably performed by Peter, Paul and Mary. One of the most meaningful song ever written. I saw them sing this on TV when I was six years old and have had a crush on the great Mary Travers ever since!

This Bob Dylan song was released in the early 1960s but it was so huge that it was still very popular in the 1970s. We used to sing it in music class in elementary school and at church in the late sixties and seventies.
This one was written by Bob Dylan, I believe? My All-Time favorite by this group is "I Dig Rock & Roll Music" in which they sound like The Mamas & Papas.
This was one of several songs that became the theme of many of us now in our 60’s and 70’s. Every person deserves to be free. Every person should be respected.
This Bob Dylan classic performed by PPM was an anthem of the Civil Rights movement of the 60s. Please react to PPM on "If I Had a Hammer" (Jan Hammer version) live at the March on Washington 1963 w/ Martin Luther King, thank you!
This song was written by Bob Dylan, and is one of the reasons he is considered one of the most important songwriters to come out of the '60s. You'd do well to take a deep dive into some of Bob Dylan's music. He doesn't have the best singing voice, but it is one-of-a-kind, and the message of many of his songs are as profound, in one way or another, as this. One of the most beautiful love songs ever written is his 1969 hit, "Lay Lady Lay." And check out his "Like A Rolling Stone" and "Positively 4th Street."
This song has been making me cry for almost 60 years . Today , I sit here in my beloved Virginia watching in horror as the brave , innocent people of Ukraine struggle to find shelter from the missiles and bombs raining down on them from the sky. It is 2022 and I guess enough people haven't died , yet .
Love Peter, Paul and Mary. Listened to and sang along with their music as a kid in the 60s. This song was a cover of the great Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan was a song writer for the ages in the 60s and 70s. You should check out the Dylan original!
Bob Dylan wrote this Folk Song & a few others, but P P & M brought it to us all in the 60s. As a teen, with school friends, family & neighbors fighting in Nam (some dying), I joined in the Civil Rights movement with it ringing in my ears. When I met Mary Travers after a concert, I thanked her for our loved ones who couldn't & she embraced me. That meant even more to me than her autograph on my program, alone. Listening to my many old P P & M albums now is bittersweet. ☮
WOW!!!! You have no idea how long it had been since I've heard that song!!!! Loved it when I was growing up in the 60's and 70' s and it is still just as good as it was then. Thank you for reacting to this one!!! Keep it up!!! Love y'alls reactions!!!!
Love you both. Love all the music especially the 60’s and 70’s because that was when I was growing up. I am in my sixties now and love the variety I had back then on the radio. Keep up the great work, you both are awesome.
In 1963 my first grade teacher was right out of college. She was a real folky and played her records for the class. I remember learning this song and many other protest songs. At the age of 6 I thought this had to be the deepest song ever written. At 65 my opinion hasn't change. Next PP&M song - "Where Have All The Flowers gone?"
This is a great protest song with powerful lyrics written by the legendary Bob Dylan. This wonderful trio of singers created some of the most beautiful harmonies in all of folk music in the 60’s. Great choice guys! Love your channel 🌺✌️
❤️ HAPPY PRE-VALENTINE’S DAY, SHAWN & MEL!!!!❤️ ⭐️ This song was one of the MANY “Folk” songs during the 1960’s, which brought attention to multitudes of societal issues being ignored by people, our police across the country, treating TOO MANY people is unjustly, our government from Main Street to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, not understanding, or willing to make necessary changes to support the demands of the PEOPLE! It was a crazy time . . . Kind of like right now!!! This song is just as relevant today, IF NOT MORE SO, THAN 50 years ago!!! ⭐️ But I digress!! It is an absolutely amazing song, whose IS VERY DEEP, and filled with meaning! ⭐️ ❤️ SHAWN and MEL, I am very glad you are SO MOVED BY THIS SONG! I LOVE YOUR REACTIONS, BECAUSE YOU FEEL EVERYTHING ABOUT THE LYRICS, AND THE MUSIC. You’re the best and I adore you both!!! ⭐️ 💕With all my love, always ~ Laura 💕 ❤️ 🥰❤️ S and M HIT SQUAD IS THE BEST!!! ❤️🥰❤️
A great blend of voices delivering a heart-felt message. We failed in banning the cannon balls... we have moved great distances in allowing people to be free. The reality is all around. God, I'm near tears...
This song was written by a true living legend Bob Dylan. Peter Paul and Mary put incredible harmony on this cover as a lot of others they did. They were an awesome and amazing band in a world of lost music known as folk. Check out the song "if you could read my mind" By Gordon Lightfoot. It's another awesome folk song from the 70s.
This is a great tune years ago I met a guy who was struggling with life and came up to live with his father who was an old hippy his dad told him to listen to old Dylan records and that they can change your life and he did and sure enough they made a huge impression and different on his life

This one was written by Bob Dylan, I believe? My All-Time favorite by this group is "I Dig Rock & Roll Music" in which they sound like The Mamas & Papas.
This song came out in 1963 & I was 7 years old & in first grade & this song has stayed with me ever since!!
I was lucky to see them in concert 5 times in my younger days. they are awesome people.
Absolutely great song, with wisdom for everyone.
They were my favourite group on the 60's. So many great songs, with meaning.
We need songs like this today!
Love Peter, Paul and Mary. Listened to and sang along with their music as a kid in the 60s. This song was a cover of the great Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan was a song writer for the ages in the 60s and 70s. You should check out the Dylan original!
Written by Bob Dyland sung Hauntingly Beautiful by the great Folk Rockers "Peter, Paul & Mary." (1962).
My father's favorite group. He met Mary while at college and he was a student advisor. We had every album they put out.
What a time it was ! Summer of '63, the march on Washington, MLK's ' I have a dream " speech. I watched it & I was in tears. -------------MJL, 77 y/o
Why can't we appreciate each other the way we appreciate music?
It's our differences that make us the same.
100 percent recommend PP&M's cover of another great Dylan protest song, The Times They Are A Changin'
Brought tears to my eyes. My favorite group of all times
Prayers and Love = answers/solutions inspired from God. 💜🙏💜🙏💜🙏💜🙏💜🙏💜
This is like a history lesson from your grandparents lives
This is a great protest song with powerful lyrics written by the legendary Bob Dylan. This wonderful trio of singers created some of the most beautiful harmonies in all of folk music in the 60’s. Great choice guys! Love your channel 🌺✌️
This entire performance is available in pieces on UA-cam. One of my favorite songs they do is Gordon Lightfoot’s “For Loving Me”.
Yes, the world needs prayer. Grateful to know you are my brother and sister! ♡♡♡♡
💕With all my love, always ~ Laura 💕
❤️ 🥰❤️ S and M HIT SQUAD IS THE BEST!!! ❤️🥰❤️
After all of these years, I still get goosebumps from this song
This song is just as relevant today as it was when they sung it in the 60's .
A great blend of voices delivering a heart-felt message. We failed in banning the cannon balls... we have moved great distances in allowing people to be free. The reality is all around. God, I'm near tears...
Beautiful harmonies. We are back to this ...same old problems.
This is a great tune years ago I met a guy who was struggling with life and came up to live with his father who was an old hippy his dad told him to listen to old Dylan records and that they can change your life and he did and sure enough they made a huge impression and different on his life
Try "Where Have All the Flowers Gone". It's magnificent.
