The song is about the loss of innocence. Jackie didn't pass away he just passed the age where he believed in dragons so Puff faded into the mists of memory. There's always been a discussion about the real meaning of the song but the lyrics lay it out pretty clearly.
@@MagetaTheLionHeart- so agree! Remember crying as a kid listening to this song. Not sure if i was crying because i loved the song so much or the music, or the lyrics! Haha
It’s not a code, it’s exactly what they are saying - it’s about childhood and imagination. I loved this song as a child, as an adult it makes me misty each time I hear it.
Love this trio. They were an American folk group formed in 1961. They had a lot of great hits such as "Puff, The Magic Dragon". Despite rumors that the song refers to drugs, it is actually about the lost innocence of childhood. Other songs are "Lemon Tree", "500 Miles", "If I Had A Hammer", "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?", "Leaving On A Jet Plane", "Day Is Done". They recorded quite a few of Bob Dylan's songs such as "Blowin' In The Wind", "The Times They Are a-Changin'", "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right", "When The Ship Comes In".
I agree my mom loved this band and that never came across her lips about smoking .. she was against weed smoking ... Why do people add thier owns stories into original meaning .. it was a kids imaginary story
Such a sweet song from my childhood. But it always ended in tears when Jackie Paper grew up and left his friend, Puff, behind. Loss of childhood, innocence, and imagination. Love PP&M. They did some beautiful, memorable songs.
There is no code to this song. It is simply a straight-forward story about growing up. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more wholesome (and talented) musical group whose support for civil rights was unwavering as well.
I was a child when I first heard this song. When Jackie Paper left Puff I felt so sad and was determined to protect my imagination and play like a child all my life. I'm 62 and still love to play in honor of Puff the Magic Dragon. The child in me still is hoping to keep him alive.
As a child of the 60s I understood the coming of age and growing up, especially then. Jackie Paper simply grew up and left his imagery friends behind as we all do.
Say hey Mel and Shawn, The whole 'coded marijuana message' thing developed because of Puff's name and the playful imagery of the lyrics. Everyone at the time, including PPM, were winkin' and smilin' at the inside joke. BUT, ultimately, it's just a sweet song about childhood, friendship, and maturity. It's kind of amazing that it was a smash hit song.
Jackie didn't pass away, he simply grew up. The song shows the end of innocence and leaves you to think about what happens to an imaginary friend when they a outgrown.
PP&M later wrote a additional verse to this song, when Jackie's young son started playing with puff. This song was on their album titled "Peter, Paul and Mommy", it was an entire album of children's music. Simply beautiful.
I have to check this! A few days ago when I finally heard the whole thing, the song broke a grown ass 41 year old man. And it made me miss the Puff plush I had (which I did give to a child and wished him happy memories with Puff) so I looked for it and bought it off eBay. EXACTLY as I remembered it. I doubt it’s the exact one I had but I missed it and now Puff is with me again, so to speak.
This song always makes me cry. Jackie didn’t die, he grew up and left his childhood behind which unfortunately included Puff. The movie Toy Story touches on this when Andy goes off to college. So sad.
I had the fortune to see Peter, Paul, and Mary at The Winter Festival For Peace in January, 1970 here in NYC. They of course did "Puff", "Where Have All The Flowers Gone", and "If I Had A Hammer". The highlight for me was their cover of John Denver's "Leaving On A Jet Plane" which was a big hit for them at the time. At that concert though was a huge lineup of now legendary names such as Harry Belafonte, Jimi Hendrix, Dave Brubeck, Johnny Winter, Blood Sweat and Tears, The Young Rascals, Judy Collins, The Cast Of Hair, and Richie Havens. The best days y'all. All for about 7 dollars. Sweet, innocent songs such as "Puff" and Kenny Loggins doing the wonderful "Back To Pooh Corner" we'll never see again. The last member of this trio is still alive at the age of 83, and is still the same political activist he has always been.
@@edprzydatek8398 I had seen Jimi twice before this concert. He came onstage last, did maybe 3 songs, sat in front of the mike, threw up, and had to be escorted off stage. I saw him again, and for the last time, at Randall's Island later that year. Interesting days man.
The composer of the song based the song on a story his roommate was writing, the song is about growing up and the loss of innocence. In his words when he composed the song pot use was pretty rare in his area and adamantly stated it has nothing to do with drugs and asked the rhetorical question “What creep would write a song about drugs in a kids song?”
Folk music has become totally forgotten! Thank you for shining light on it again. Leaving on a Jet Plane was probably their biggest hit. WALK RIGHT IN by Rooftop Singers is so cool another great folk song.
It was inspired by an Ogden Nash poem titled "Custard the Dragon", about a "realio, trulio little pet dragon". The lyrics tell a story of the ageless dragon Puff and his playmate, Jackie Paper, a little boy who grows up and loses interest in the imaginary adventures of childhood and leaves Puff to be with himself.
I can't listen to this song without bawling. It used to make me sad but, since losing my girlfriend of 23 years on April 15, 2021, 6 days after suffering a cardiac arrest, it's much deeper for me, now.
Great kids song - there was a cartoon out at about the same time called "Beany and Cecil", Beany was a little boy and Cecil was a sea serpent, so I always associated the two.

I love it in Peter, Paul and Mommy... an awesome show.... where Peter does the line "Pirate ships would lower their flags when Puff roared out his name" and then in his super soft voice added "Hi, I'm Puff!"
This is a sad song, but, it's about how a little boy named Jackie Paper had adventures with his imaginary friend Puff, who was a dragon, he spent his childhood playing with this imaginary friend, but, then Jackie Paper grew up, so in Puff's world, Jackie was no more. I sang it at my daughters wedding
The "code" theory has been around since the song was released.Peter Yarrow wrote it as a fairytale to sing to his child at bedtime.I have seen him answer that question and explained what it is actually about.
This song was magic when I was a child. I took it all literally. When I grew up, I realized it was about growing up. So much more meaningful then. Thank you
As a child of the '60s this song was and always will be about childhood innocence and imagination becoming displaced by the responsibility of growing up. I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Peter, Paul and Mary in 1996 and they were just as wholesome then as they were in this video.
There was a series of children's books from the 40s and/or 50s called "My Father's Dragon" that one would think this song is based on. Read them with your children, along with The Velveteen Rabbit.
Teary eyed at this song...2 Friday afternoons each month our grade four teacher would lead our class in singing as she played guitar. I used to play this song on the guitar and sing it to my son when he was very very young. He would always cry out "No, no!" when the sad part came and would want me to change the end of the song or just leave the sad verses out altogether. Thank you for the memory ❤
No code. It's a children's fairy tale. It's about growing up and your loss when you can't believe in magic anymore. Every song for the 60s was NOT about drugs. Puff still lives in my mind.
This song is about the growing up, the loss of childhood innocents. Peter Yarrow, the song's writer, put the rumor bs to bed decades 4 decades ago, this song has NOTHING to do with drugs! Puff goes back to the 50s. Dragons spit fire, thus the name puff, for the smoke from the dragons fire. Some others have suggested songs that Peter, Paul and Mary have made famous here are a few more deeper songs. Paul Stuckey wrote "The Wedding Song", Peter Yarrow in addition to writing Puff wrote "The Great Mandella". Mary brought back a wonderful song from the 1800s called "Cruel War" that takes place during the civil war. Then there is a light hearted song "Weave Me the Sunshine", and Stewball.
It may have been coded but as a child born in the early 60's it was sung by all of us as children. (At the top of our lungs) cause that's what kids did back then
The little boy grew up and didn't have any desire to play anymore with Puff his magic dragon. Little Jackie loved his dragon, Puff and grew up!!! Jackie had a awesome imagination!
The song is about the loss of innocence. Jackie didn't pass away he just passed the age where he believed in dragons so Puff faded into the mists of memory.

I remember this Disney movie as a kid love it
no code just lost of childhood innocence
No codes, no drugs. Just the magical imagination of childhood, and the inventible sadness when children grow up and the magic fades away.
This song calmed my soul when I was a kid
A child’s imagination is a wonderful thing
It may have been coded but as a child born in the early 60's it was sung by all of us as children. (At the top of our lungs) cause that's what kids did back then
My grandma used to play a record of this for me when I was little 😢❤ 🌹
I loved this song as a kid, latter in college I still loved it but it made me cry
There was a cartoon about this song. Jackie Paper grew up. "Giant wings and painted wing make way for other toys" That part of the song make me cry.
The little boy grew up and didn't have any desire to play anymore with Puff his magic dragon. Little Jackie loved his dragon, Puff and grew up!!! Jackie had a awesome imagination!
