I'll agree on the diesel aspect, most of my contractors used gassers for their field trucks. But the owners and heavy hauler pickups are diesel. I personally own a diesel and it literally never gets worked hard. Why did I buy it? Because I could.

    • @JohnnyWalker721
      @JohnnyWalker721 5 років тому +3

We've got mostly diesel's and a few gas trucks for a huge contracting fleet. The diesels run longer without issues and haul better when you need them to. Nothing worse than doing 15 in a 40 loaded up with gravel and towing a mini up a hill. Granted, we send salesmen in smart cars to go bid on jobs.

At my work the diesel is kinda needed. Just on what the job is. We have 3 chip trucks that tow 8000lb chippers everyday. One of them is a gas and goes to the gas station twice a week where the others maybe 1.5 weeks per visit. Then we some of our equipment get to the max tow rating of our f350s conventional towing. But if it was not for the use that then a gas would make more sense.

So for a work truck you want a basic truck with no aftermarket modifications. Wow I'm glad I watched a 12 minute video to learn that... Are you guys running out of ideas for videos? The only interesting thing that was said in this video was that diesels don't actually make up the extra cost associated with getting one but anyone with a calculator could've figured that out.

Pretty cool to see Stan on here, his points on modern diesels for work trucks are spot on and line up with what I've seen in fleet use. Unless you need the extra power and capacity, the savings will never be seen in most fleets. Throw in 1 or 2 major out of warranty repairs in the mix and it's pretty easy to lose money on a modern diesel vs. a gas option even with the higher resale.

Levelling kits are popular for some work trucks, lumber racks, tool box and bed cover or campers. Also led lights. It really depends on what type of job you have. One example are like ranchers trucks that they customize with a big metal bumper with grill guard, wench, led lights & a head rack.

Zero bullshit, 100% fact. In Forestry in B.C. we want fuel efficient machines with minimum maintenance, so we can treat them as rentals and still get to the block with zero problem every morning. As for the rear seats, we just put our cruise vests, vertex and iPads in the back. The rest of the equipment goes in the back.

I have a 2013 crew cab Silverado. Got it before i became a pipe fitter or even had that in mind. I have it leveled. 2.5” strut spacer in front and replaced the back block with a 1.5”. (Front sits about 5/8” higher than back) I have stock wheels (for now, looking at those fuel assault) and 285 GY duratrac. I drive 200 miles a day easy and do not regret it. Sure it’s not a 7.5” on 35’s. But i keep my personal work truck styled just enough to where i still get a head turn at her. Ultimately i want to keep this truck for work and get a second truck for my show truck. None of which would’ve been possible if it wasn’t for all your videos and videos on truck builds! Keep them coming!

For the layman with a few bucks to spare, I think 18-20x9s with 33-35s on a stock or leveled truck is a pretty good sweet spot. Gives you some respectable looks and really doesnt change your driveability or work performance at all. Anything more and you definitely start to go toward the show truck side less geared for work.

Had a lifted ram 1500 for 3 years . 6 inch lift 37 inch tires . It wAs my work truck . Used everyday pulling a 6x12 vnose trailer. Sure I got looks and compliments with it but it was a pain for me and my helper jumping in and out of it . Had to lift kids up in the truck and reach to buckle them in there car seats everyday . Now they can get in on there own in our new stock 2018 Ford f 150. Ankle started hurting from jumping in and out . started to worry what happens if I get a flat tire . Can’t just throw a spare on it . I hand wash my vehicles but for guys that don’t they usually don’t fit in car washes , hard to go through drive throughs . And so on . So for a show truck sweet go for it but every day work truck I wouldn’t do it . I’m happy to be back in a stock truck .

It's making sense in my head now. You guys aren't trying to build useful trucks. They're just show trucks. I agree a fair amount with what that guy said. I'm a work truck guy. I'd rather not have carpet. 3 of my personal pickups have rubber floors in them. The only function of wheels is to hold big tires. I like aluminum simply for weight savings and reducing unsprung weight. Suspension can be lifted a little, but every inch you lift it means you have to lift heavy crap that much higher to get into or out of the bed. I like good quality, velocity valves shock absorbers. They make a world of difference. I get big tires to fill the wheelwells. As big as I can fit. 35x12.50s will fit a stock 6.7L diesel F250 4x4 with no trimming. If the rear wasn't a toolbox bed, I probably could have gone bigger. The rear wheelwells are tiny on toolbox beds. I also prefer regular cabs. No extended cab. No crew cab. I want the back window right behind me. I collect enough trash as it is. I don't want to fill the whole back of the cab up with crap. Along with that, I want at least an 8ft bed. 8ft if it's a pickup. 9 or longer if it is a flatbed or toolbox bed. I personally like gas engines on my personal vehicles but use a lot of diesels at work. The amount of towing that I do would baffle you guys. Mileage makes better sense in diesels but diesels are expensive to fix... and the new shit breaks down a lot. I've seen a handful of turbos go out in 6.7L ford diesels. The DEF tanks and sending units? Total junk. Absolute garbage. Injectors have been ok to us so far on the 6.7s. Only one egr cooler. The we've got a 2011 f450 with a plastic oil pan. And a plastic oil drain plug. A 2011 f350 has an aluminum pan and regular drain plug. I believe they discontinued plastic pans and drain plugs after that model.

Some mud terrain tires (I live in the panhandle in texas, so its common) new headlights and taillights all collormatched white. I'm looking on the website for some rims that I just really fall in love with. On the interior I got led lights.(in the factory housings) a 10 inch sub under the back seat. New leather seats because mine were ripped up. Ofcourse a dashcam (incase of a wreck) new bluetooth radio with nav and all jea speakers.
In the engine I have basicly the stock 5.6L vortec engion. With new plugs and wiring. New stronger tranny brand new radiator and airconditioner system complete. Im running a flomaster exhast and am soon replacing the regular like 1.5 inch exhast tip and pipe with a 3 inch. Running from right after the flomaster till the exit. Basically spent all my money from fencing and mowing in the summer fixing her up. Got around 1000 left so I'm starting work at discount tire next week and am about to do christmas lights so I can finnish her up. Will post on the gallery when I get the rims in.

Trucks built for purpose like over landing, rock crawling, Baja/trophy trucks etc. These trucks, as long as they aren’t heavily modified, often are used for daily driving as well but for modification fall in-between the work/show truck categories.

Leveling kit and some mud tires. Not a huge lift a decent one and decent sized tires. Ones that can b used great off-road and have a lot of life but will still have a work trucks function ability

show trucks are cool but in the work force we are looking for practicality. like as an example my work truck is a 1996 ford f250 and it is still stock height but i still fit larger than stock tires under it just because of the terrain i deal with. its all about what fits your needs best

My favorite tires are bf Goodrich K02's best tires you can buy for the money, they work flawlessly in Michigan weather in snow, ice, off-road, wet roads etc... Well worth the $1200

I have owned two types of trucks the lifted 6 inches for four-door and now I own a single cab midsize truck 99 Tacoma on a 3 inch lift to be exact and I do use my trucks as their attended but I do like that lifted truck luck with nice looking wheels and tires but I also do you them like a truck and I am still gonna put a lift kit on my trucks but not so big to where they do not perform like a truck should. If I need to tow something or have something in a bad my truck I want it looks just as good being used as it does pulling into parking lots

Think I would go with a multi fuel engine if I was building it. And more of off road type package. Something I can hose out with ladder racks that a cap will slide under. And a heater from hell. Manual 6+ speed cut down on drivers. 2-3 lift depending maybe no lift. Whatever sized rims I can get large selection of cheap tires. As close to dirt road brown as possible.

My truck is for work in the oilfield in Canada. But I am a project manager. So I drive in deep snow, sometimes mud, mostly on road though. I have a 3/4 ton to drag my holiday trailer, farm tractor and the odd skid steer around. So it is leveled to be able to have a little more ground clearance in the front. And has Duratracs due to good traction and winter rating with decent highway wear. But it is gas. I don't need the extra expense and headaches of a diesel to pull heavy twice a month. And due to high mileage adding expensive mods and lift kits only to get a new truck every couple years is not worth it. A nice set of wheels makes it a little more personalized though 😊

My trucks get hammered, and I dont like diesel motors period....I dont tow either so have no need for one and yeah 10k more forget it....just got new chevy (lot nicer than WT) but still have my 2005 toyota that works great but is beatto pulp....my new chevy will do some work out of it but trying to be careful and use this for mostly meeting clients and just getting to work, lol
And yeah no mods to work truck.....buy last yr models new at best possible price ( like right now thru dec)....maybe 8ft bed with reg cab or small extended....vinyl interior and not even sure if you can get a truck without power windows anymore......25-30k maybe less brand new easily if you buy at right time.......used trucks are pricey and new ones you know exact history of vehicle....I would have bought used but got mine for cheaper than any 2 or 3 yr old ones and I checked pretty thoroughly....was shocked how much used go for actually.....
