  • A review of Li Auto's latest update which enables urban self-driving tech and artificial intelligence.
    ********
    We love Li Auto SUVs for their comfort, luxury and family-first cabins, but that doesn't mean they're resting on their laurels. With Li OTA 5.0, the brand becomes the third member of the exclusive 'urban self-driving' tribe in China after #xpeng and #huawei, introduces automated valet parking, and takes their cabin infotainment up a few more notches with super smart AI technology and GPT-like capability. It's probably one of the biggest OTA updates ever given to a range of cars, and makes Li Auto's luxury SUVs even more desirable than they were previously.
    We took (most) of the updates for a spin, to see just how good they are.

    Was it difficult to learn?

      Haha. It's really not that great at all and should be considerably better by now. Light stuff is easy to learn I'd say but it gets harder. Like everything, it takes consistent practice.

      The 6.1 update came out last week and now I can use auto pilot on all roads that navigation can be used on. I park inside a park that doesn't have official roads but they still show up on navigation apps. The car is able to self navigate along a route even though the shape of the road is slightly different than what it's expecting from the low res map data.

  • @ratbert1
    @ratbert1 7 місяців тому +2

    @InsideChinaAuto What happens in 'X' years when the car is still perfectly ok but the technology in it is not able to support the latest updates?
    Does the latest 'self driving' update render the car obsolete, unable to partake in autonomous driving or maybe we get a multi tier environment depending on the cpu the car has?
    Or will the infotainment system be unable to run the latest maps, Apple Music version etc?
    When my iPad or iPhone becomes obsolete I replace it, I am not sure many will want to do that with their EV's?
    I appreciate many are leased and so this may not be an issue that directly affects those people, however it will create a lot of 'obsolete tech' secondhand EV's that will retain reduced value and thereby will directly affect the price of new lease contracts.
    I am all for EV's but the tech laden models we are seeing seem susceptible to obsolescence, some of the EV models being announced in Europe use iPads or similar as 'updatable' screens look more practicable in the longer term from a cost and maintenance perspective.

    • @InsideChinaAuto
      @InsideChinaAuto  7 місяців тому +2

      It's an interesting question. I mean the reality is, if cars with today's tech can drive fully autonomously, do they even need upgrading? I'm wondering what comes next in this space, because it seems to be the main hurdle to full self-driving is humans getting in the way and unclear road markings. No amount of tech can make up for councils not maintaining all their roads, and well, humans are humans I guess. How fast can a screen in a car really be? What more does it need to process? Movies in 4k? 8k? Feels we're at a bit of a pinch point. Either that or I simply don't have enough imagination. The only way cars beat traffic is by flying over them and that's new tech altogether.

    I wonder what European rivals strategy to keep with level 3/4+ is?. For instance Volvo has adopted the LIDAR route but it so far it seems challenging given that their EX90 debut has been put back by 20 months now.Although Volvo has a much better access to the Chinese technology inventory been part of Giley than their German rivals for example.

    • @InsideChinaAuto
      @InsideChinaAuto  6 місяців тому +1

      I don't think the lidar is the issue, it's the software in general. They obviously want it to be up to speed with the new things coming from Chinese brands and they need to get it right. Lidar is for safety first and foremost, seeing objects in the road from as far away as possible, so it makes sense Volvo would use it.

    • @InsideChinaAuto
      @InsideChinaAuto  5 місяців тому

      You get access to the autonomous tech depending on which variant you buy at the start but they don't charge you a monthly fee and have stated they never will.

    • @JianYZhong
      @JianYZhong 5 місяців тому

      @@InsideChinaAuto Thanks. For me, it's OK to pay a separate charge for autonomous driving if it means being able to buy the vehicle at a lower price. I prefer this as a consumer as I only need autonomous driving capability occasionally. On the other hand, I can also see that an ongoing charge will discourage customers from using autonomous driving regularly, and the technology may improve more quickly the more people use autonomous driving. So maybe Li Auto's approach is better in the long-run.
      Do you intend to review Tesla's latest FSD when it becomes available in China?
