Its called a flame-less ration heater.....They include them is military meals...Meals Ready to Eat or MRE... The ration heater contains finely powdered magnesium metal, alloyed with a small amount of iron, and table salt. To activate the reaction, a small amount of water is added, and the boiling point of water is quickly reached as the reaction proceeds.....It generates a ton of heat and pressure.....But its dangerous....Especially since it produces Hydrogen gas as a by product....and it is flammable near end stage... . . Had this thing gone off anywhere near an open flame or spark...you would have seen a very different type of explosion...
