Not into the Apple Eco System but always good to learn something new for my friends that may not know of these productivity boosts. Appreciate the work👍. Kudos from NYC🗽.

I like this. Ended up setting this up. I've been using Alfred for years, but I wasn't taking advantage of this feature, but that's not surprising considering I don't use probably 90% of Alfred's features. I've been using Moom, also for years, but I like the features of Rectangle more, so it was an easy switch.

I'm using Raycast currently and it doesn't have any issues with moving windows between monitors nowadays. I'm quite pleased with it. I'm using it, along with BetterTouchTool, as an alternative to the Rectangle+Alfred setup. This combination might not cover all the Alfred utilities, but it's not bad on its own.

Excellent. Whatever gets you to a nice simple shortcut to focus and position your app is ‘chefs kiss’ for me 👍

I've been using Karabiner + Hammerspoon for a couple of years now. It's been months since I've touched my hammerspoon config, but the last time I tried setting up some things didn't work as expected.
I might give one of these GUI tools a try some day

Raycast is where it’s at. I find it so much better than Alfred it’s absolutely fantastic. So much easier to setup than Alfred too. Raycast works with Rectangle but does it on its own I find. I find it totally indispensable.

I find Raycast slow in comparison. It is also compromised from an information security point of view; making calls back to Raycast servers. The infosec department of my workplace disallowed it on that basis

@@benfrainuk I came to make the same comment about using Raycat, but I agree the fact that the pro version of Raycast is $8 a month and it's constantly phoning home is less than amazing.

First time caller… Great video Ben, I just ordered a ZSA Voyager and I’m watching more videos about Hyper keys and programming my keyboard and making layers for the Voyager in my mind. I have the Lifetime license for Alfred and love it, but keep forgetting about doing stuff like you showed. (Unfortunately,) I just picked up a Stream Deck Neo and am slowing beginning to think that I wasted money once I started to realize everything that you can do with a programmable keyboard. 😮

Well the good news is I’m sure you will be able to sell the steam deck easy enough if you find it redundant 👍😀

    • @benfrainuk

Yes but it needs security compromising access for certain things which I can’t allow at the day job. And I’d rather have the same setup in both places.

Ben, given you’re on a Mac, have you done any experimentation with Karabiner Elements or Hammerspoon for customization or have you focused on and firmware level changes with Oryx/QMK or ZMK? Curious if it’s worth exploring.

I looked at hammerspoon around the same time I settled on this approach. I found this simpler, more secure (doesn’t require altering security settings) but still meeting all my needs. You could do the same thing with Karabiner, all you need is a Hyper/meh key 👍 thanks for the thanks!!

Do you mean ‘Hyper’ key? That’s a single key that you map to send the OS multiple modifiers at once (ctrl, alt, opt, shift). If not that, let me know the time in the video when it’s used and I can (hopefully!) clarify

I use Yabai, even though it does require disabling SIP partially.
Its biggest upside, other than the binary space partitioning/tiling stuff, is that it disables the horrible animation when changing spaces.
