      Because of the level of production or because it doesn't fit your ideology? It's one thing I've noticed watching many different channels, especially ones debunking other youtubers (which this channel has done to Harris's channel). Reading comments really shows people are more concerned with the content matching their beliefs rather than the objective reality fueling the content itself. If it's the former, that's not a bad thing. I don't agree with everything Harris puts out, and he has done some shotty journalism (I'm not a fan of his seemingly pro-WEF stance), but his production quality is great. If it's the latter, get lost. Preferably in a place with walls so you can find your way back to sensibility.

    4:36 there isn't any wall between India and Myanmar, in fact there is a free movement agreement between village people of both the countries to cross into other upto 30 kms, although this might soon be changing, as the civil war in Myanmar is resulting in increased armed migration, which is causing ethnic conflicts inside India and a "Wall" or a fencing is under proposal, although it would take years to implement it if at all, as there is disagreements from the state governments. I am from Siliguri Corridor, the chicken's neck region in India, so I am just kilometers away from Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and China. And each is different, while Nepal and India has complete free movement, For Bhutan, you need a little more entry checking, but those are only at the specific border gates, in other places the borders are just rivers and one can easily cross into the other. With China there is one entry point(Nathula which is part of ancient Silk route) and only trade between locals are allowed. Bangladesh is different case, as it's mostly fenced and guarded, illegal migration has come down over the years, but cross border smuggling(of cows, fake currencies, arms, gold and all sorts of stuff) is rampant, also some terrorists move between the 2 countries when they feel unsafe in one. However, international organized trade happens between not just India and Bangaldesh, but also from Nepal and Bhutan through the Siliguri corridor. Also, Special bus and train(both passenger and cargo) services run between the 2 countries though multiple entry points.

      @@biedisunizlietne yes. In India a lot of rules are flexible to cater to people across different level of economic and social strata. That's the reason you see a lot of supposed "bad things" such as slums, people loitering in railway stations and uneven build ups in city streets. Those slums are people encroaching on govt lands because they couldn't otherwise afford homes, those people loitering in the railway stations couldn't afford hotels to wait for their trains, those uneven building are there because if a strict building code and inspection law is incorporated, there won't be enough buildings built in time to keep people from being homeless etc etc. In other countries they are just kicked in the balls and ended up homeless or in institutions. This is why when PPL outside of India complain about why it's so chaotic, we collectively roll our eyes. We just traded off external forms and symmetry in exchange for basic functionalities...that's all.And before you say, why their situations are not being alleviated, yes it is, the people in those conditions are not a static layer, people In different layers constantly move up in social and economic ladders...but it's a huge population and the number of people in the lower rungs is steadily decreasing.

    Yes, walls work. Walls are not perfect. Why do people have doors on their houses? Doors can be broken. It’s not that deep. Think you went into this with preconceived notions. Would’ve liked to hear more about obscure border walls, their appearances, and the surrounding tensions. You forgot the massive, growing Egypt-Gaza border wall. The 1600+ mile border between Pakistan and Afghanistan for example has been credited with curbing attacks, smuggling, illegal entry in a volatile region. Legal immigration definitely needs reforms in the West. However, countries can’t just open their doors and let people walk in unvetted.

    • @ThePresentPast_
      @ThePresentPast_  Місяць тому +11

      Hey there, I agree that countries can't just open their borders. I'm just not convinced walls work to stem it. One thing I could have showed more is how walls can freeze conflicts. Like in Belfast, Cyprus or North Korea (and Pakistan and Afghanistan, I haven't researched that particular wall enough to say something about it). They definitely don't solve conflicts but they can stop flare ups.

    • @aeternitasnox5151
      @aeternitasnox5151 Місяць тому +5

      @@ThePresentPast_ True, that's another interesting aspect. There're also several variables when determining the effectiveness of walls. The Mexico-U.S. border for example is not continuous. One major gap, The San Judas Break, went viral on Chinese TikTok earlier this year. Over 4 days in Feb., CBS 60 Minutes witnessed nearly 600 migrants - adults and children - come through the 4-foot gap at the end of a border fence 60 miles east of San Diego. 37,000 Chinese citizens were apprehended as they illegally crossed the border last year. The Mexican government recently setup a checkpoint at San Judas. Now people will just cross in another gap. Other questions remain about border walls such as: How easy and common is it to create a gap in the wall? Can officials be bribed? Do geographical formations or weather deter crossings in certain countries? How to stem ocean crossings? Does the country have net immigration or net emigration? Does stricter legislation in countries help deter? Are certain building materials less effective? Do certain governments secretly help crossing for cheap labor? And if not a wall, then what? The uniqueness and complexity about each border makes wall effectiveness difficult to judge. Anyways, thanks and keep up the good work always an entertaining watch!

    In theory, walls serve an important purpose. If there is a problem in one region/country, the most resourceful people are forced to stay there to solve those problems instead of running away.
    In my opinion, on the one hand, assistance to illegal immigration should be strict, and people who crossed the border illegally should be sent back. On the other hand, a work permit system should be created for contract workers. So that these employees can invest and spend the money they earn in their countries, improving their lives there.

    5:04 terrorism is one of the primary reason behind fencing the Indo-pak border. Indian government is fencing the Indo-Bangladesh border to stop the illeagle immigrants which are changing the demographics of the Eastern and North-eastern states, initially demographics are changing, finally it will lead to political instability in future. The reason is very similar behind fencing the Indo-Bangladesh border is similar to europe why it fanced its borders. Secondary reason is terrorism.
    For example Indo-Baruma border is open border, because of which violence was seen in the state of Manipur. This is why Indian government is fancing all the borders.

    Sorry but saying life in eastern germany wasn't that bad sounds really weird to me. I'm german living in western germany without direct relatives from eastern germany, but the migration that happened afterwards and the horrific living standards are things you hear about all the time. There is a reason why people died trying to cross the wall and why today there's an incredible amount of difference in living standards between east and west.

    • @moustachu100
      @moustachu100 7 днів тому

      Well firstly he's putting the Berlin wall in a context of today's migration - citizens of DDR didn't have to flee starvation, war, lack of basic services like water and health system. Secondly the living standard in DDR was relatively high in the cathegories mentioned in the video (I'm not talking about access to western consumer goods or western style liberal democracy of course). Thirdly - the things You hear don't have to be true, there was a lot of propaganda back in the day. Just an anecdote - my grandmother visited her family in west germany in the 70's, and her relatives tried to give her their second hand clothes after hearing of the dire poverty in the east; my grandma's reaction was throwing the charity at their feet, saying she can get better clothes with her own means (and no, she was not in the party, she was a technician in a factory)

    Walls won't work completely on their own - but they are invaluable in aiding border patrol and making the job easier.
    Laws/Government are also a key factor - Switzerland has come very effective laws when it comes to illegal immigration.
    As you mentioned, legal immigration is a factor - here in the UK the government has been weak and spineless when it comes to immigration - they have handed out Visas like candy and have little enforcement.
    One of the biggest problems is that liberals in the west encourage immigration and they use excuses like 'We need workers for our Aging population' or 'We need workers', without addressing the actual causes at home of low birth rates, terrible education amongst other issues. The locals simply don't want immigration and it is the obligation of the leaders to erect walls and barriers to prevent unwanted foreigners from entering.
    One detail you could include is how UK left the EU - the issue driving the leave campaign was immigration. The vote to leave came just after the Refugee Crisis of 2015 when Angela Merkel arbitrarily opened the borders - she had no right to do so, but she (and those that supported her) thought otherwise.
    UK did not want these migrants coming to our shores, hence the vote to leave, so ironically breaking down a wall, erected another so to speak.
    It is unpleasant but necessary and slowly all the spineless politicians are being voted out - look at the Netherlands. Also politicians are taking action to save their own careers.
    It is not the obligation of the west to help the countries at war or in poverty. It is the obligation to keep unwanted foreigners out.
    A great video dealing with an unpleasant topic.

    Thanks for the info and your time researching this dreadful issue. That said, the causes of immigration have origins in colonial/imperialist policies. In the Americas the fascist elites from the US have captured most foreign governments in the American global "south" (GS).
    Possibly with the exception of Cuba and Venezuela. US bankers' terms via the IMF and the World Bank dictate that for the sake of "balance of trade," i.e. to get their hands on US dollars, GS countries can only grow export crops that the Global North can't grow due to its climate (or export raw resources, i.e copper, lithium, oil, rare earths, etc.).
    If GS countries want to eat, they have to import food from US Big Ag corporations. When drought or civil unrest undermines export cash crop, or extracted resource demand plummets, locals either starve, rebel or leave (This has become a worldwide phenomenon). Since the first two end up in certain death, immigration becomes the better "option."
    There, geo-political finance explained in three paragraphs. Look up _Confessions of an Economic Hit Man_ or any books/UA-cam videos by professor Michael Hudson.
    Be well.

    Immigration is a complicated problem to say the least. I've long thought that a decrease in legal immigration difficulty along side an increase in the consequences toward illegal immigration may assist to some extent but that doesn't really address the often dire needs of folks we need to quickly leave their country of origin.
    But immigration often leave the country the folks are leaving worse off (unless they are workers who send remittances back to their families). The brain drain is really hampering developing countries from well... developing: those who are most likely to leave are wealthier and better educated which are exactly the kinds of people a country needs to develop.
    Then you have the human trafficking and other illicit activities that frequently accompany illegal migration. Let alone terrorists and foreign powers sending spys and such.
    You can look at what China is doing to S. Korea: they are sending millions of people over to S. Korea to effectively colonize certain areas to increase the voting base: playing the long game to change the political environment to one they can more easily manipulate.

      Depends on international relations, for instance citizens of the European Union member states can travel freely around Europe, no walls whatsoever and not have to flash a passport once, (generally) even the us-Canada borders doesn’t have a significantly long border wall. Usually it’s dependent on whether any neighboring countries house “””undesirable””” ethic groups.
