When I was a kid, knew Newley''s name but did not know him, except for his reputation. When UA-cam came out, I saw a video of him singing "Who Can I Turn To" on the Ed Sullivan Show (b4 my time) and it was such an amazing performance. I actually cried. How he held his body...crooked, broken, plus how he sung the song, was amazing. Liza speaks for herself, always amazing despite problems but Diahann Carroll was so underestimated. I saw her in reruns of "Julia", when she was the 1st actor of color to have their own show. She amazed on Broadway and clubs....was so incredibly beautiful....stunningly beautiful with an amazing voice which many didn't know except for shows like this. Great trio.

All here are absolutely great singers, but Anthony Newley's voice is without peer. He has a huge vocal range and that voice has such resonance and vibrato it just rings like a bell. He was also a wonderful composer(along with partner Leslie Bricusse). He doesn't seem to get the credit he deserves for his great versatility(I guess he got more recognition in Britain.). RIP Mr Newley, you were truly one of a kind.

I have about 35 Newley videos, on my channel, one of my all time favourites is The most promising new comer 1960, live TV, which shows the many talents of Tony, at the open you can see how he was offered the part in the movie Alfie.

First spied him in, "Doctor Doolittle", and fell hard, really hard. Sure I was only a little girl, but, sigh, I was goner. Possessing a precocious taste in music, Sinatra and Ella, my favs, Anthony was a shoe-in. Dreamy, as all get out, with a voice like no other, I needed more. I began searching out his other recordings, mystified by the glorious tunes from, " The Smell Of The Greasepaint...", that were being performed by anyone with a voice. Sammy Davis, Jr, did them justice, but hearing them sung by Mr Newley was magical. The songs appeared to be so sad and lonesome to me, but this man brought me great joy, when he performed them in his singular style. I've never seen this special, but you better believe I'm smiling through my tears. Thank you so, so much for sharing this, "once in a lifetime", gift with me. I'm ever so grateful. Please take care, sleep warm, and stay safe. Much love. Joy❤

Tony was one of a kind and talented in so many ways along with being a fabulous guy. I have about 22 uploads on my channel, featuring Tony throughout his career. All three are exceptional singers. This was done live, band/orchestra over on the side, no autotune, no body mics (only hanging which means you really have to sing and project, along with the hand mic at his medley.) Real audience. Probably with just a few retakes of entire numbers, but not too much splicing or dubbing in. No layered vocals to boost the voice like today. The two ladies would have had to make a time commitment to Newley to learn and rehearse the show like a cabaret or theater act, so probably 2-3 weeks total. You can tell it was on a budget, same set/costumes/lighting for most of the hour, but sometimes great things are produced when you have to work around limits, like with this special. I also appreciate the short not-too-cheesy banter to connect the musical numbers, kept the focus on the singing. And you can feel the respect the two ladies had for each other.

Many thanks to you Mr. Denton. This video was the finest I have seen with Anthony Newley in great form. As a fan of his, since I first saw him in 1950, I have enjoyed every song he sang. His poetry in the words and the feelings that it brings, were his special talent. In later years his voice grew tired and in the Musical SCROOGE in London, his range was reduced and replaced with his ability to mime and perform the emotion he needed to give shape to his character. For me he could do no wrong, however to see another side of this exemptional entertainer, a Biography called "Stop The World" by Garth Bardsley will allow you to see perhaps, a more complicated man.
    Thanks again

Hi Eric. Thank you for your post and I’m very pleased you enjoyed the 71 TV Special. In the latter years during the Scrooge performances Tony was so unwell and how he managed to appear night after night I have no idea. I have read Garth’s book and did make a small contribution. Having worked with Tony and known him as a friend for many years it was obvious to me that there was Anthony and Tony two completely different people. Should you wish to read my personal stories with Tony please go to kennydenton.com/?p=1706. Lastly, with the many Newley videos I have uploaded on my channel, one of my absolute favourites that shows Tony’s diverse talent way back in 1960 is “The Most Promising Newcomer”, which as a lot of shows back then went out live, amazing. ua-cam.com/video/c8voLx9ek2k/v-deo.html

Living in London in the 60’s you guessed it I missed “Stop the World” but play the album on a regular basis.
Did not see “Roar” with AN but caught a separate production many years later and truly enthralled by it I can only imagine how great Mr Newley was in it - likewise I play the album. Also fascinated by the history of it with Norman Wisdom’s involvement. I had a friend named Martin Taylor who worked for AN’s agent or similar and would give me updates on film sets etc during Rock n Roll days. By the way I really enjoyed his “Mercy” film and wish I could get online access to it the critique at the time was not too complimentary probably ahead of it’s time - or they had no taste. Finally I know someone who met Mr Newley at the Cafe Royal and being in the bis wanted to get together for a special project but unfortunately it didn’t happen.

@@stephenvincent4989 Here is the New York Times review dated March 20th 1969 (Very Unkind)
"CAN Heironymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness?" is the new British movie produced and directed by Anthony Newley, who also wrote the original screenplay (with Herman Raucher), composed the score, acted the leading role and played its most conspicuous nude scenes. I probably won't use the title again because-even though it's the Nilometer on which the movie's wit level is marked-it's just too long (but not as long as the movie itself).Newley is an able actor ("The Small World of Sammy Lee") and pop singer-composer ("Stop the World-I Want to Get Off" and, to a much lesser extent, "The Roar of the Greasepaint, the Smell of the Crowd"). In this, his debut as an all-purpose movie man, he so over extends and overexposes himself that the movie comes to look like an act of professional suicide.Newley has always been rather big with metaphors, and in "Heironymus" he's discovered - approximately 400 years late-the Theater as Life. Unfortunately, all of his insights, his passions and his poetry could be stuffed into a booth at Downey's, along with his wife (Joan Collins, who also is in the movie), a couple of agents and maybe one old-time Broadway character to be patronized. The movie is as self-indulgent as a burp. It's also as pretentious as its form, a kind of contemporary Punch and Judy show set (metaphorically, of course) on a timeless (and very Felliniesque beach), where Heironymous-Punch (Newley), a pop singing idol, is reliving his life as a movie.Heironymus is spoiled by his mother, and he is tempted by Satan (an embarrassed-looking Milton Berle wearing a red union suit occasionally). He is the temporary consort to numerous nubile ladies in scenes that can't hold a candle (a rotting figure of speech that could have come out of the movie) to those in "The Immoral Mr. Teas." He is subjected to aphorisms (in the form of vaudeville gags) delivered by George Jessel, identified in the program simply as The Presence, and he sings songs with lyrics like "If the world is just a stage/And life but a part we play . . ."The movie is not so free and loose as it is simply out of control, like a child in desperate search of some discipline. It drops names-Sophocles, Beethoven, Nijinsky and Fellini-without having any more idea about them than would some metaphysical telephone book. Its humor is mock Terry Southern, depending a good deal on smutty proper names, but the only thing offensive about it is its egotism. In addition to Newley and Miss Collins, who plays the Judy to his Punch, the cast includes Victor Spinetti, as one of a trio of out-copping movie critics (who are appalled at the movie-within-the-movie), and Connie Kreski, as Mercy Humppe, a very mature nymphet for whom Heironymus yearns. Most sad to me was the use of George Jessel, who himself has certainly used people in his day. There is a gallantry about Jessel, whose dark brown toupee sits atop his head like a limp but haired lettuce leaf. The movie opened yesterday at the Orleans and Pacific East Theaters.

Kenny the previous person who replied I can confirm is correct “l’m spoilt” by you sending this review reminding me of all the points I admired in the film. By the way I see they left off Bruce Forsyth for criticism who’s was perfect for the spot and knowing Brucie he would have been highly disappointed not to get even a mention negative or otherwise.

Hi! This content on your page is beyond incredible of Newley. Wanted to ask: Do you happen to have any footage of the footage of the “Good Old Bad Old Days” play Tony did back in the early 70’s? Thank you again for this!

Hi Thank you for your very kind comments. Sadly I don't have any original footage from “Good Old Bad Old Days” But there is a great section from the show at arond 12.10 on my Burt Bacharach TV Special 1972 Full Show with Anthony Newley & Sammy Davis Jr. I do have more footage which I am trying to transfer over, but have had some computer issues when my old Mac gave up and the the new one doesn't support some of the old architecture. Hoping to sort soon. Kind regrds Kenny
