Very true and some sort of a total awakening for the whole Netherlands "Wait a minute.....damn, we are having a world class female singer and she is around for 20 years and is the queen of Metal and we (outside the world of metal) had absolutely no clue and damn, she is so amazing in all sorts of other music too. @@markuskampmann2053 Also inside the world of metal it seems, at least in the circles that I often go to get my dose of metal. I had only vaguely heard her name (I am dutch, she is dutch, and there it stops), but I never took the time to listen to her, because she was not "trash", "death", "speed" or "black", and stylistically it was also not similar to Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Accept, Judas Priest etc. Man, did I turn a RED face after finally listening to her -:) And still, when I mention her some of the girls and guys still go like "Oh, but it's not true metal (whatever that means) so it has to suck". That's what prejudice against certain genres does -:) Needless to say, I have not known a day without Floor since that time I heard her for the first time, sitting at the bar ...

LOVELY reaction, Sabina!! I agree with you that in Lara's and Floor's renditions of the song, they are coming from different emotional places. It seems like in Lara's performance, the loss described by the lyrics has just occurred and she is immersed in the grief and the loss; and in the final verses there is a sense of pleading, almost.
In Floor's performance I get the sense that the separation is further in the past and that Floor has overcome that immediate sense of loss. And in the last few verses, Floor is laying down how that relationship is going to be in the future. Powerful!

My interpretation is that Floor has a different take on the lyrics than Lara does. Floor's take on the song seems to me to reflect anticipation, desire, and looking forward to reuniting rather than anguish, longing and pain at missing someone that Lara conveys. In this original key I prefer Floor's take on the song. For Lara's performances of the song I prefer the version in the lower key, personally.
Floor really performs this well and I really like the arrangement Tommy Johansson did for it.

I believe Floor sings this with a sense of yearning but also anticipation - so not a sad song for her, but more an “I’m done being patient so get your ass over here and take care of business” sort of vibe. Just incredible. You MUST watch her covers of Alone and Ave Maria. Brain-meltingly good. I also highly recommend checking out her UA-cam channel. Tons of incredible content she has been putting out during the pandemic.

You are right about mismatch between her smile and the lyrics, but other than that, she is just a phenomenal singer, you can hear she is not pushing at all. Her technique must be flawless, singing teachers might say more about that for sure. And she is always having fun singing, and I love her positive emotions, I would so hug her for that. :D

As others have said, pls listen to her performances on Beste Zangers 2019, she is amazing in all her songs, its a fantasic look and an insight to how she can take any song and give it her own twist ! To see her sing an artist song back at then sat in front of her and have them sit in actual stunned silence is something to see !

I believe that her husband Hannes is running the camera and it's being shot in their home studio. It looks to me that they do a few takes and splice the best audio track over various clips which results in slight synchronization issues. Note that in some clips these sync issues are present and in others they are not, indicating that in those clips we're looking at the clip from which the master audio track was derived.
About her smiling during all that lyrical anguish - I just think she was having so much fun with the song that she couldn't keep her expression appropriately sad.

@@sabina1118 When I watched it the first time I had the same thought about the "mismatch", but after watching it a million more times, I think Floor took a different inspiration from the source material. Lara sings it very fragile and wistful in the beginning, and her lyrics definitely convey that idea as well. Floor to me sounds more like she is singing about anticipating the return (or perhaps entreating/demanding the return) of a loved one, more aggressive and active. I think those smiles are her enjoying herself, yes, but it could also be part of that anticipatory mood she has created.
@@ceithern True, Floor doesn't do "fragile" and "vulnerable" very well. She usually takes these sorts of songs and gives them a defiant twist.
Smiling is also a way off singing used in fore example opera . It,s floors second nature .

I concur with the suggestions for Beste Zangers. But for her recently released covers, my favorite is the stripped down and beautiful Alone (of which the version by Heart is most well known). I totally agree with your comments about the visuals, and her Alone cover is also more coherent in that regard.

I have watched both the original and this. The original is stunningly beautiful. Floors version gives me tears of sadness and joy at the same time, even after listening to it for at least 20 times now. Somehow she manages to channel her emotions through me. There are very few singers I react to this way but Floor does it consistently in many songs.

I played the original in the 1970's as leader of an orchestra, neither of these is the original, which is a purely instrumental piece and well known in orchestral circles. It just doesn't sound right with words slapped on top.

Floor has an edge to her vocals. Very beautiful and very powerful. When comparing great artists like Floor, Lara, and Dimash the winners are the listeners. Maybe the Three great singers in music today. I can only say that Floor is the only one that has made me cry.

Please check Floor's own UA-cam channel for her solo work! There's "Let It Go" from Frozen, "Ave Maria", and "Alone", a Heart cover (yes, I know Heart's wasn't the original, but that's what we all remember). The "Beste Zangers" show has been already suggested. And then there's Puccini's "O Mio Babbino Caro"! There's plenty of Floor for us with a girl crush (says I, a 46 year old male with no musical capabilities)... Edit: Also, How's the Heart, Planet Rock acoustic session, with Troy on acoustic guitar, a song from Nightwish's latest album!
You should look at the reaction of Big Brain Singer. He reacted to this version and he explained why Floor’s expressions are different than you would expect. It made sense to me. 💕🤘

Lara's version sounds to me a bit more longing and vulnerable, if that makes sense. Dimash's version, with all the stage theatrics, although technically great vocally, seemed a bit too much - more a "put on" for the audience and certainly not necessary for the song. Floor's version with just her and that iconic microphone made me feel as if she's singing the song for only a select few - much more intense and personal. My personal favorite of the three. It is Floor, after all.

I believe that Floor is the most inventive and adventurous singer out there. She has an amazing inventory of technique and emotion and is rather brave in using them. Props to Lara for creating the piece and Dimash is the master of singing in a contest rather than simply entertaining. But for me Floor's version is the one going into my play list. I'm not sure what you were trying to say about this song! You seem to be saying that her singing was great but somehow she was not being honest about the way she recorded it. I may be totally wrong but that was the way it came across to me. Im surprised about your reaction as I know how much you love Floor, but I have to say I'm a bit disappointed!
I think it was the best version of this I song I have heard and not just because she sang it so beautifully, but because of the passion that she expressed singing it. If you think that she did all this without a lot of time, and wanted to give her fans something to enjoy I for one think it was fantastic and a pleasure to have heard it.
There are many versions of this song and everyone has their favourites, which is only right, but to me personally no one has sang it as good as this and I am thankgul to Floor for giving this gift to us!

Floor appears to be smiling often while singing, but it is less a sense of satisfaction than it is a singing technique; a facial position that shape her tone. There is a hot debate over whether the video we see is of the actual audio we hear. I don't know for sure, but I don't see any signs of obvious lip syncing.
In all her covers from her home that she did lately she did this "music video" type of recording.
They look great but it's obviously noticeable that she's not singing live. Probably for production reasons, she doesn't have a professional team to record and produce after all, her husband (who is the drummer of a great metal band, Sabaton) is presumably filming and helping her out.
Anyway, I had not heard the original before (now I have) but I knew the classical piece is based on. Absolute gorgeous arrangement and lyrics and Floor's take on it is breathtaking. Her voice has no limits.
The question is: what do you mean by not "live". 1.) Image and sound are recorded separately, simply to get a better video... That still is actually "live" (as in sung as a whole) , but only with other visuals, 2.) As happens in big studio's where mediocre singers are recorded many many times, and the soundtrack of the song is constructed out of many "snippets" which are then pieced together by the producer to create a seamingly perfect production, that has nothing to do with the original singer.
I can tell you two things: A.) this video is probably not live in the sense that the video was shot separately, but B.) it is almost certainly "live" in the sense that it was recorded in one or two takes, because Floor recorded it in her garden-singing shed during covid lockdown. So yes, in that sense it is very much "live".

I can't make up my mind whether I prefer Lara's version or Floor's. I think it depends on which part of the song you are listening to and your mood at the time.

why choose? I love them both, but only one is sung by Floor haha So much more power and a bit more upbeat, but Lara's version is stunningly beautiful, much more vulnerable. Both it is!

Floor is absolutely a great singer, with fantastic voice and breath control, and a vocal nerd and perfectionist, but what really makes a difference, is that she really gets into a song, her interpretation, lives it, and just projects all that passion and emotion to make you feel this.
There is no other singer currently who can do this as she can IMO, and make me personally feel it, from beginning to end.
Dimash is a great technical nerd of a singer, very good, he knows it, and basically seems to have to show that in each song. IMO, as a result, the emotions and feelings get lost. It is about him, not about the song, that is how I perceive it.
Lara is also a great, pasionate singer, another technical vocalist. However, she is able to project some feelings some of the time, but not all the time, or very often, which does give me goosebumps occasionally. Depends a bit on the recording as well - the one where she is by herself in a church is much more evocative than several of the others I have seen. "Je suis malade" somehow suits her better and si more evocative too - I would love to see Floor do that song, probably tears the entire song.
And that is what for me makes the difference: Floor's version gave me chills and goosebumps upon goosebumps upon goosebunps all the way, literally from beginning to end.
The imperfections you talk about, are style adaptations and changes which Floor uses deliberately., and practices to perfection She could have done a 100% perfect Lara interpretation, no problem at all (if you compare the two performances side-by-side you will find that both sing exactly the same notes as well....). However, she does this in order to project her interpretation of the feelings she wants to emote and evoke.
They are not real imperfections, as they are done deliberately. And yes, she is that good, she knows exactly what to do and when and how to do it to make you feel those emotions.
Just check out Beste Zangers 2019, indeed, where she does similar things. Once you realize it, you tend to notice it much more, and it is the same with her covers (5 now), and also when she performs with Nightwish.
Beyond her great singing capabilities, this is where her real genius lies, and I love her and her singing for it. She is the only one who touches me like she does with her performances.
And I loved seing you being touched by her interpretation as well, BTW :).

Lara is known for her storytelling skills. She lives every single word she's singing and emotes like no one else. The En toute intimité and From Lara with love concerts are masterclasses of interpretation.

I'll trot out the old saw in case someone else hadn't: Most singers sing what they can, Floor sings what she wants.
I think she sings it and films it many times and then combines the best vocal to a montage of the visual.

In the end I prefer Lara’s original version more but Floor sang it as only Floor can.

I think that singing with a smile is part of Floor's technique to achieve certain effects. Many comments have mentioned Beste Zangers and you would find it interesting. There are 3 songs that she sang for the original writers/singers where she made them cry, Winner by Tim Ackermann, Mamma by Samantha Steenwijk, About love I don't know a thing by Ruben Annink and also Que se siente by Rolf Sanchez in Spanish which absolutely delighted him. Also Emma Heester sang Floor's own song Strong, about Floor's mother, which made Floor cry. Floor's first song of the show was Vilja LIed for Opera singer Henk Poort, he was her childhood hero. Floor was virtually unknown in her home country, the Netherlands, prior to this show and the astonishment of the other singers at her voice on this first song was a wonder to behold. They are all well worth the watching. Keep up the good work with your reactions.

Totally agree about the visual part, it's really confusing to me too. I like to watch her, she's adorable and beautiful, but somehow in this case the singing vibe and video just do not match I think. I mean this cover sounds "more full" without video, in my opinion.

I do not understand the need to be comparing singers, some may be better than others but in the end it is a matter of taste, and all singers put their soul into their performances, you just have to enjoy them or not
Exactly - I just love to start a conversation to share what we appreciate with different singers as they are all individual artists and they all have something unique to bring to the table!

I agree with you that her voice is powerful and impressive, and obviously trained.
I got the feeling that she does’t understand English and didn’t understand the lyrics. The discrepancy, as you pointed out, was very visible.Lara’s version, as it is her song, was much more moving and emotional.
As for Dimash, well I have nothing to say about his vocals, outstanding. I hope as he learns more English some of his pronunciations mistakes will be eliminated.

Your comments are somewhat askew about Floor, as she understands English extremely well, and is one of the most expressive and feeling singers ever to grace this planet. She never sings a song she doesn't like, or understand.
You, obviously, haven't got a clue on who Floor Jansen is, as an artist and as a person, or what she does artistically, the way she does it, and why she does it.
This is not a cover, its a tribute and her own version. She make this to her own song.🥰😘😍

It can be difficult to compare artists without upsetting fans. Dimash is my favourite by far. I see comments he was too much, which I understand to some degree. He was in a competition against other singers and had not done so well the week before. So when he sang Adagio he gave it his all and won that week. It is this competitive element of the Singer show that raises the bar in so many performances on that show. Dimash is a performer who gives his all and I like that. Lara's version is also marvellous and possibly more balanced. She has a lovely quality to her voice, which is always a pleasure to listen to. Floor is good but I'm afraid I just don't get the hype with her and Nightwish. It is clearly taste as I am bored now with Metal. There's also a English Folk flavour I am not partial too. The backing sound was too loud also.
Totally agree. That's how I'd place them on my list too. And I also like Il Divo's version.
