I like that you filmed this in flight. A lot of people probably would have done it on the ground. Having everything running, the engine noise and radio chatter in the background with the scenery out the window that isn't a hanger or some airport ramp. Makes a difference, in my opinion. 👍👍
Yes it did!!
Awesome I'm glad you liked it!
@@dereksellars I concur.
Josh's video recording and editing are The GOAT (Greatest, of all time - Not bad for a mid Septuagenarian huh?)
just passed my instrument check ride and boy do I wish I had these avionics for my instrument training!
Congratulations on passing your instrument check ride . Happy for you Sir . Fly safe always .
Same, I’m incredibly spoiled with the partial glass panel that my flight school’s plane has
tbh it would be much better to learn on the six pack and transition to the easier digital ones.
Congrats for passing your insturment!!
Huge CONGRATULATIONS! 🎈🎉🎊
The most situationally aware skyhawk in the world
Indeed 😅
Wow, Push To Command must be really handy in IMC (once you memorize a lot more commands).
It's really awesome. I actually thought it was kind of "gimmicky" until I started using it. It's SO useful.
Hey Josh, I had a little laugh when, at the 34 minute mark you said "so, that's about it". And I bet there's a lot more, especially if you had gotten into some of the finer details of IFR flying. And it was 34 minutes of jam-packed nerdy details - pretty rare with Garmin panels in the UA-cam searching I've done. I have a couple of nerdy questions if you don't mind:
Smartglide: What if the [only] airport was very close but you were at 9500'. Does SG know how to work its way down to field elevation + some offset where you can initiate an approach?
On your 750, do you ever enter User Waypoints? On my Garmin GPS/Transponder with the database subscription my local VTA chart (Vancouver BC) has 123 checkpoints that aren't covered by Garmin's subscription so I enter them myself.
G5: Just curious, if you entered an altitude into the G5 altitude bug, would that affect the autopilot? i.e. is that a way of controlling your level?
Sirius XM: Do you need a dedicated Sirius receiver or is that somehow built into one your Garmin boxes.
Cheers, and thank for the fantastic tour of 991!
That's a better setup than most airliners from like 10 years ago!
Indeed! So capable.
Great stuff, Josh! You have such a beautiful panel, especially on such a classic Cessna 172 it is extremely helpful, in my opinion at least, to have a nice modern panel even on an older airplane as it just makes things safer! I am envious of this panel and just like you whenever I see a plane I have to walk up and see how the panel is because like you mentioned as pilot the panel is the most important interface in the airplane as it is what allows the pilot to pilot the plane safely and effectively. I was fortunate enough to see it up close at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2024 this year end meeting you & Chelsea which was the definite highlight of my trip maybe my life! 😂
Cheers 🥂 what an EXCELLENT video my new friend but of course you know I love all your videos and make an effort to watch them all! Thanks for being so nice and friendly at OSH this summer as I’m sure I probably bothered you a little with nerdy questions about flying & you! 😂
Thanks for all that!
Wishing You Blue Skies & Tailwinds!
-Caleb’s Aviation 😊
Such great video explaining everything. Wish I lived close enough for you to be my instructor.
HOLY COW!! Great set up. So easy to operate. Next question, how much to get an Avionics package like that in a 172? I'm guessing $150K.
Thanks for the video!
It's an amazing setup! This setup is just shy of ~100K installed.
@@Aviation101 is that Retail or Wholesale? Could an average GA pilot achieve that in today’s market?
I miss the old school Turn & Bank Indicator with Airspeed and Altimeter. What is the reliability comparison with them and the electronic modern versions of 2024? As newbie PPL in December 1967, they were my basic flight instruments in an old 1950s Piper Colt. With total electrical failure how do they compare?
Can't speak to Josh's setup - but for my glass panel if there's an electrical failure it has internal backup batteries for an hour of flight on the main panels / system. Then there's the 'backup', backup which gives me another hour. You should be able to get on the ground in that time frame.
@@GlensHangarYour little airplane is fantastic, I loved watching your refurbishment videos! Made me very jealous as I haven’t gotten anywhere near as much done as you on my project planes!
Sweet!
Loved the video! One thing I couldn't forget...why would you put the standby instruments on the left hand side? Wouldn't make it a lot more sense to have them in the middle for both pilots to see? Like in most aircraft? I know, probably due to space issues, but surely there would have been a way to work around that.
If you look at the center of the stack you can see why. G5 in the middle would work with the 650, but with the larger 750 you're just out of room. Only option would be remote 2nd nav/com and transponder but since he was reusing one, no go. (I also prefer second nav com on it's own unit )
This was soooo helpful. Thanks for taking the time to explain all of this.
Of course!
If NAV1 and NAV2 are set up for an iLS approach can you set it up so that nav one displays THE LOCALIZER and GLIDESLÒPE on the attitude indicator and NAV2 set for a VOR cross radial displays on the heading indicator?
That panel is incredible! Nice job!
We love it! So capable and useful.
Fascinating. I am a simple UK PPL, and have been watcjhing your channel for many years. All of this is magic.
But, I am disgusted that you filmed that when single pilot in a VFR flight - what happened to See and Avoid? I did notice you were at least listening, so could respond to ATC, but what about traffic?
Beautiful panel! Just working on my IR so I appreciate all the cool gadgets you have. I'm working with your basic but very capable GTN650 and dual G5 setup but I can see how all the extra panels, especially when you get used to them, is very nice for XC trips
Another nice video! I wonder how you guide your camera and zoom into the right spot while talking? I would like to know how you control your external cameras? Are they switched on when on ship´s power or is it just a power supply?
As a pilot/owner who has had a passenger get motion sickness in my plane I love the vinyl flooring, that’s my favourite part of the video. I need that for my Mooney now
Can someone give me a ballpark of what it would cost to have all of this mounted in a 172? I have the cost of the equipment I am just looking for an installation cost.
Great video Josh, make a video showing how you use Garmin Pilot (weather, flight planning, etc)
My wife commented that the panel cost more than the airplane. As an aircraft owner, I definitely understand why you would do it. Once you’re comfortable and confident with the airframe and power plant, you really don’t want to go through that again with a new plane. That said, it would be interesting for you to have a discussion as to why you still cling to this airplane instead of upgrading to a better cross country hauler. I think I know the answer, but I think it would be a good discussion, especially since you have mentioned upgrading in the past.
17:00 That is the Direct-To Navigation button which should open the direct to navigation options. It's useful for changing the input course to a new airport.
The panel is wonderful, a good investment that is complemented by a garbage bag.
That’s nicest most thought thru avionics I’ve ever seen in a single engine aircraft. Its clear you’re a perfectionist. Gotta love that in a pilot. However I know first hand it’s never perfect is it? 😀 awesome job.
Great panel Josh! Thanks for the tour. What mount are you running for your iPad mini?
Where did you go to school? I've noticed your ring before and it looks like an academy 40wt!
Dream panel, for a retrofit in the 172. Thanks for the detailed tour.
Not often I have to stop video due to jealousy.
Legend has it you still haven’t thrown your banana and orange peels away…
Like the circuit breaker switches for reducing panel clutter. What is the source?
You use to run ForeFlight that’s what I’ve always used
Please don't use 123.45 MHz for air-to-air communications. This is a violation of FCC regulations. "Fingers" is assigned to licensed flight test stations only. The frequency for private fixed wing air-to-air communications is 122.75 MHz. See 47 CFR § 87.299 et seq. and 87.173.
rough week for me snd for my airplane ive been waiting almost 2 years on an overhaul and install and sometimes i feel like my soul is leaving my body, haha thanks for posting this Josh hopefullly get flying again soon
Did your empty weight go down with that avionics install? If so, by how much?
I was wondering the same thing.
I *assume* the plane lost weight a bit, but when we reweighed it, the empty weight was about 70lbs heavier. I don't believe that, though. No way. I think it mostly has to do with poor calculations over the years, and sometimes no calculations done at all, when modifications had been done over the decades.
great video... love the supper nerdy aviation stuff
That panel must cost as much as the airplane.
Great video. My kind of stuff.
Loved this video...excellent tour
But where is the ejector seat?
Krasses Pferd!
👍
Are you still considering a Skymaster ?
Really cool planes, but I don't think I'll want to own one!
Can’t wait to see your new CC ride. Centurion? Bonanza? Mooney? Twin? Perhaps a Baron or SkyMaster, aka MixMaster? Aka Push-Me Pull-U?
Likely none of the above! Stay tuned. Thanks for the support 🤘🏼
I want all the stuff. Looks like tons of engaging fun. Now all I have to do is get a license, find a hangar, and buy a plane. And figure out where I'd fly.
Fly everywhere you can! “A mile of road only takes you a mile. A mile of runway can take you anywhere.”
Loved it!! Ty
dual engine incoming...
Upvote for the orange peel. I actually loled when I saw that. Haha!
😂🍊
man this thing is kitted😍
Love the vinyl floor (and of course the rest of the plane). Where did you get the flooring?
We got the flooring from a shop called East Coast Aircraft, but I think many interior shops can provide/order the material instead of carpet.
Love your videos
Thank you 🙏
friggin amazing
Would you say that panel would run around 100K installed?
Easy
I think around 150K
~96K installed for us.
@@Aviation101wonder what the cost would be for similar kit in an experimental like an RV rather than certified aircraft?
@@Aviation101 Thanks, I could look up the price of the products, but was just guessing at the install rate.
Fantastic aircraft!
We love it!
Yay!
😎🫡
Amazing what modern avionics have done to flight precision and data available to pilots.
Thx Josh, especially in flight review.
Modern tech is a tremendous help for safety!
Just about the equivalent of an airliner cockpit. Beautiful Josh, best regards to Chelsea 😊
It's a fantastic setup! Thanks for your support 🙌🏼
This is an appreciated and absolute gift to aviators with an in-flight walk-through. Josh, you are indeed a gem in aviation!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for the kind words.
love your videos! I just did my first cross country flight today to Fort Scott,Kansas keep up the good videos!
Awesome! I'm glad you liked it. Congrats on the first XC!
Hey Josh, love watching your videos. Even if I don’t fly at all, I will learn little tidbits here and there.
Thanks great to hear, Ralph. Thanks so much for the support.
I'm wondering if you used your iPhone for this one because I didn't see any display flicker till near the end on your 750. I use goPros so do you recommend a setting on goPros and a setting or attachment for iPhone that would eliminate the flickering or ghosting?
Hey Mikey - I did use the iPhone for this video. That's a great questions about the flickering - I'm going to dive into that in a techie video on Cockpit Club. Stay tuned for that - Thanks for being a member!
Do you use iPad with or without cellular connection??
Without! This is a Wifi iPad, connected to the avionics via bluetooth to receive GPS/Traffic/SXM Weather. I file flight plans through Garmin Pilot on my iPhone.
Its been a rough day but seeing an aviation 101 post makes it good!
Oh man I'm glad to hear - glad you enjoyed it!
That smart glide is a very cool feature
In all my years of flying, I've never heard of this. I'll verify! Thanks for sharing.
Man, your avionics are worth more than your aircraft! 😉😂😂😂That's very cool stuff. I love seeing Garmin's continuous improvement in the GA community.
Quick Question: Is Garmin Pro-pilot as good or better than Foreflight? (Not factoring in the seemless Garmin Avionics integration)
I had Garmin Pilot and didn't like it but I've used Foreflight for over a decade so it might just be me. I used Pilot initially because it would sync flight plans with my GPS but Foreflight does that now without needing a Flight Stream interface and does it over bluetooth.
I definitely prefer the UI in Garmin over FF - plus, the responsiveness of the team to feedback from the GA community to improve the app is some of the best I've seen in the industry!
I used to love these kind of videos from you and would watch them multiple times.
But now that you’ve upgraded this much and your cockpit looks nothing like mine (and lord knows I can’t afford any of what you’re showing) I’ll be skipping this one.
I’m sure if you don’t get the minutes watch you were expecting, it because I’m not alone.
Can’t wait for the next video
My CAP squadron has a 1986 172P with the round dial panel. I think we are working on the 3rd engine.
About 10-12 years ago I tried to get Wing to upgrade it with an Aspen triple unit and a Garmin 650 AP. Nope.
We did get a new G1000 172 in February. That yellowish green is really awful. You have to use Foreflight to make sense of anything.
So, when are you two coming back to KHYI?
I'm sorry this one didn't resonate with you!
G,day Josh from Sydney Australia.
Do you know how Sirrus XM weather records the wind direction and speed at various altitudes?
Q2. The distance on the touch VNAV(top of screen) is that manual waypoint heights or plate information?
Q3. Nav coms are separated from GPS and work of frequency?
Q4 separate DC circuits for the two GX3s?
Thank you for your excellent training video.
🌏🇦🇺
The upper-level winds for Sirius XM are based on the data set from Aviationweather.gov. (I worked for XM weather until just after the merger.) Most of the Sirius XM weather data is from that source. If I recall correctly, the upper-level winds data set is updated every 3-6 hours.
Hey John!
Q1: I think SiriusXM pulls the most up-to-date forecast from the national weather service, then transmits it through their datalink to SXM receivers.
Q2: That info can be either manually-entered altitudes, or if you have a procedure loaded (SID, STAR, or IAP), it will autofill the altitude constraints and the VNAV will fly that profile if you command it to do so! It's awesome.
Q3: Correct, NAV/COM radios operate on VHF.
Q4: Correct! They're actually on entirely separate busses.
Thanks for watching!
Hello! I wonder if the real speed is the IAS or the TAS when you're at 9000 feet like you w
ere in the video
IAS should be displayed. IAS has to be corrected for altittude and temp. to have a TAS value. Plz correct me if i'm incorrect.
@@piper0428okey! I can’t correct you because I’m only 14 years old and my dream is to fly and I’m learning things slowly step by step🙂
1:22 same lol
😂
No views in 30 secs?! Bro fell off
Hi Josh! It’s an honor to be the first commenter. Keep up the great work!
The honor belongs to Meekerman.
He makes you pay to see the good videos. Oh well…
Too bad I can't produce everything full-time for free 🙃
