As an Amtrak Guest Rewards member, I've redeemed coupons to enjoy the Metropolitan Lounge at Moynihan and look forward to enjoying the one at Chicago's grand Union Station. Please do plan a trip for your family in an Amtrak sleeping car compartment: either a family bedroom or two roomettes. For the latter, one parent with one child in one roomette, and the other parent with child in the second roomette -- but please make sure to book by phone (not via app) so that you can request roomettes across from each other.👍🏼Having a sleeping compartment means complimentary access to Amtrak's Metropolitan Lounges at stations that have them. For example, if you're departing from NYC, you'd have free access to the metro lounge at Moynihan Train Hall (wonderful, complimentary food and beverages -- I've had full breakfasts several hours prior to an a.m. boarding and full suppers [second helpings of heated savory sandwiches and bevs] after de-boarding trains in the evening). Then, after arriving in Union Station-Chicago, you'd have complimentary access to the Metropolitan Lounge there. As a seasoned AGR member, I strongly advise that you both join Amtrak Guest Rewards (free membership!) now ... if you haven't already. Then make sure you're on AGR's e-mail list. AGR announces sales sporadically. You may see a BOGO sale pop up -- great deal and, as you already know, riding long distances in comfort. By the way, I learned the hard way on my first semi long-haul Amtrak journey that dressing in layers *and* bringing either a blanket or a huge, warm shawl are necessary if you're in coach class or business class. Not everyone will need a neck pillow/travel pillow, but, yeah, a great recommendation.👌🏽 If you're in a sleeping car compartment, you easily can request an extra blanket from the room attendant. Still, though, it's a good idea to toss in a shawl, cardigan or over-the-head sweater into the carry-on bag(s) that will remain with you in the compartment. Welcome and thanks for joining our Family Travel channel! We had been very curious about trying Amtrak so this trip was a great way to begin Train Travel as we love other modes of travel. We infact loved train travel so much that the kids asked for a longer train ride and being budget minded we booked a coach class ticket leaving from New Orleans to New York this summer. It is 33hrs instead of 19hrs for Lake Shore Limited so hoping we have plenty of time to enjoy the ride. We do plan on booking two roomette so we can try a bit more luxury in the future but before we do that, we want to fully enjoy Coach. We are also looking for west coast routes. If you have any tips about New Orleans to NY ride, please let us know. We are inspired by other content creators like Kara and Nate, Jeb Brooks, Downie Live, but we do it with kids and on a budget. Your feedback on dressing in layers, bringing extra layers for comfort is the biggest learning for us. What we loved about long distant train rides is the chance to experience this beautiful country from a very up-close and unique angle. We just wished we had more time since we somewhat slept overnight and lost some precious train time. We got to see the Great Hall of Union Station during Christmas.
It is a beautiful building! We loved just sitting there quietly admiring the 110-feet tall atrium! I am sure it looked festive during Christmas 🎄
