Whoa! Sorry about those couple mistakes that got left in! It seems my program auto uploaded my 'second to last' draft instead of the final draft. I know why it did that and it won't happen again! Embarrassing and deep apologies for those hiccups!
hey, no problem, Prof! Still fantastic work, and the only place we can get such useful information about whatever you talk about. No need to stress yourself over it!
As a table top enthusiast, many of my friends are usually coming into the night with absolutely no knowledge of the game or game play. This product would sit well with other table top games, and I can't imagine tearing it apart just for the cards. I think this product has amazing potential to throw Magic into any VERY casual game night with non-magic players.
I used those decks to teach my girlfriend how to play MTG over the holidays. We had fun. It's great for that. Has much as I want to take some of the cards from it for my own decks (I could use some Tormenting Voice in my Izzet Drakes deck) I prefer to leave them as is and treat the box as a board game and not a way to get extra cards.
I ordered this box to help teach my students magic. I work for Job Corps, and my students do not have a lot of money to spend on cards so I thought this would be a fun alternative for them and also to learn how to upgrade decks. We have a local shop that runs tournaments for us and gives them store credit for their winning placements so that they can get better and more cards later on. I am hoping that this helps keep them engaged in Magic.
4:56 contains a simple line switcheroo where the Sphinx is iterated twice in a row with two conflicting staments; one saying the Sphinx is the lowest priced and another saying the Goliath is the lowest.
Hey Professor..... The booklet page at 1:11 says that each of the mono colored decks can be mixed and matched by their symbols to create balanced two-color decks for play. How is the experience of doing this to you? Does it provide any additional value as an educational tool for new magic players that are still learning about the game, or learning about card definitions and the like?
Also explains why there was so much from 2019 (in each deck 30 were 2019, and 30 were with the reprint set logo). When mixed that makes 20 different decks, and also encourages deck building to where new players might try building the best deck with their buddy/buddies from the box like I did and have an absolute blast! Mono color gameplay is ok but it really shines in its ability to easily be divided and split without actively looking at all the cards and thinking about which ones you want to compile together. This was a stepping stone for me to get back into mtg after I finished with Lorwyn block.
Thanks for this. My wife is new to magic and I haven't really played since Kamigawa block, but we've both gotten into Magic thanks to MTG Arena. We're slowly expanding into picking up some physical cards with Planeswalker decks and the gift set, and this was on our list to be purchased next.
@@madhatten00 we mostly play on Arena though, since our local store only does sealed and drafts (which we're not very interested in), and at least those come with codes we can use online too. I thought the guild kits were not standard legal either, correct?
@@Creator846 true they're really for modern but i don't bother playing with precon standard cause it's easier to draft you'll get a lot of the standard cards you will need through draft which actually provides you a proper way to test out new cards etc. and then everything else is bought as singles trust me, you and your wife going to one draft event (you keep the decks btw) is probably worth more than going and buying that planeswalker deck; and your draft decks are totally viable anyways aside from being only 40 cards, which you easily fix by slapping on some singles and like 5 more lands
My first set I truly "collected" was Mirage. My friend and I each bought two booster packs at a video game shop. His first opening, he got a Shivan Dragon from the 5th edition booster pack. I was so jealous. MY first rare was Lion's Eye Diamond. I was so jealous of his Shivan Dragon, but I kept to collecting Mirage set. Coming from a poor family, I didn't have money to buy many booster packs back then, but I did get to around collecting 300+ cards. More than 20 years later, my first Lion's Eye Diamond is now 200$, roughly. I can remember I had about 3 to 4 of these all in mint condition. I gave them all to my nephews a couple years ago, but they manage to lose all the cards. lol. Even then, Lion's Eye Diamond from Mirage set was only at most 5$ a few years ago. Well, felt like reminiscing and also want to say, prices will change, but these cards are soo priceless, personally. MTG was my childhood afternoons.
If you look at it as a generic board game for non magic the gathering players, it falls in the price range of typical board games. IMO it should be seen as such!
Doesn't fix that the gameplay is god awful, even for beginner decks. If you are going to spend this much money on draft bulk, just buy an actually board game, they at least will have some kind of interesting and unique gameplay most of the time.
Trying to get started playing casual Magic. I've recently watched a few "What is the best thing to buy to get started with Magic" videos, and I'm considering buying this product. at $30 with Prime, it seems like a good deal to get 5 beginner-friendly decks, plus some extras (dice, rule book, container, etc). Mainly, I intend to play games with my girlfriend and a few other friends separately or in a group. This seems like the perfect option for what I'm looking for. If anyone has any better ideas, please let me know.
Game night is great to get your mates into MTG and give them an idea of how to play. I bought it to get out over xmas when my in-laws are over as I'm trying to get my wife to give magic a go because I know she'll love it, and it's a better form of relaxation than watching Dance Moms! As a starter for building your own deck though, I went along to my local game store and participated in a few draft nights as they often charged just 2.5 times the price of a booster for 3. It got me experience playing different colours (I used to play MTG 20 years ago but life got int the way) and meet great new people. Then I added to the deck with individuals (and to be honest struggled to keep the deck below 70 cards!). I've also bought a planeswalker commander deck, and swapped out a few cards for individually bought ones after doing some research.
@@bookstooge5294 A quick look around online for the Challenger decks, and it looks like all 4 end up being a bit over twice as much as this box. I'm thinking if I end up really enjoying it, I'll buy a single, more complicated deck as a base for upgrading. But, considering I want to get my girlfriend into it, and will be playing with people who aren't too familiar with Magic and card games in general, I'm guessing this Game Night Box might be closer to the mark.
How was diving into draft nights after being out of the game for so long? I find drafting interesting, but the extent of my Magic knowledge is a couple months played in 2012 and about a week of MTG Arena recently.
I think this is perfect for some casual gameplay with friends. It has everything you need to sit down and start playing whether it be 1v1 or a 5 player battle. It’s just not a product for experienced players looking to up their game.
I bought a Game Nights box not only for the exclusive mythics (which I will put to use in Commander decks), but mostly for decent beginner decks for teaching Magic to friends who come over for game nights. In my opinion, the mono-color decks work great for new players trying to find their play style.
About to get into Magic. Really excited for it. i saw the product in question on amazon and your video helped tremendously, thanks to you and your advice i am now beginning my journey to being a much more legitimate table-top enthusiast and competent wizard. Thanks!!
It’s a good beginners product as well as value product. I prefer to keep the decks as it and treat the box as a separate game rather than combining the decks or picking it apart for cards, though it can be done if that is what you wish. 10/10 would recommend for beginners and pro players who want to get people into magic without burning a hole in your pocket!
It seems much more fun to build your own "game night" box. Even if you set a budget of £7-10 per deck you could put something vastly more interesting together and tailor it to your style and what you enjoy. Watching this has actually inspired me to do so. 5 Kharns tribes decks each featuring the leaders from Fate Reforged and then a £10 budget ontop of that.
That's still more expensive than this set. Up to twice as expensive if you get the cheaper variant. Plus you'd need to double check if the decks are at least partially balanced.
@@Jaquan018 No doubt. At least the decks I would get out of it would have been chosen by me and (assuming I'm at least s semi competent deckbuilder) offer interesting gameplay. Looking at the cards in these decks I can't believe the gameplay is even remotely compelling.
@@dimebag5884 Depends on the players and their environment. Break it out when your friends possibly ones that rarely play magic comes by for an evening and you should have a good time. Yes the games are slower but take into account it's meant to be played as a multiplayer game which does lean more on slightly slower/grindy start.
My friend bought this when it first came out to give us an extra something to use for our Friday morning Magic games at our local coffee shop. We played three of us against one another and actually had a alot of fun. It took the thought out of trying to build a deck to be competitive with. I played the black zombie deck and had so many counters I ran out of them in the box. my friend played the goblin deck and made this grand play to nearly wipe out the other player hitting him for 46 points of damage, but he miscalculated by 1 lol. All in all, i really enjoyed my experience with the product. Also, if I'm not mistaken he said that there is an option to put the decks together and combo colors. That part is in the booklet you get.
I was waiting for this review ! I'm actually hesitant to buy this for christmas as a gift to my whole family. Appart from me and my brother they aren't into magic and this product seems like a good way to play with everyone in a more "board game" style of play. It's more simple than many decks and would be more approachable for my mom and dad that likes a lot of board games but wouldn't be up for some complicated play like the guild kits even. I'm still not sure because I'm not convinced they would like magic even in a board/family card game style. But for that purpose this product still seems interresting. Great video as always ^^
I imagine this video was made in a sort of rush but please ensure you watch through everything you make before uploading, especially generally short things like this to find the errors at 4:58 to 5:16, as well as the parenthesis at 5:36 and the audio repeat at 8:40 to 8:45. Other than this, great video as always, I love your content Prof!
I bought this fro my board game group and for family play. Me, my wife and my kids are now all building our own decks and playing all the time. I'm keeping this set separate for board game nights, we changed all the decks to two colour decks after the first week and we have been very impressed with it.
Thanks man I noticed this game night box at gamestop this past weekend and right away before I even considered buying it I looked online to see if you made a review of it first to see If it was even worth it. I am glad to see you cover it so I can determine if it's worth me getting.
Thanks for the review, I probably won't pick it up but it seems like fun for someone at the kitchen table. Good production value and commentary, I love watching your content.
Cards are split perfectly into 30 M19 and 30 “reprint set symbol”, rule book said to mix them to make new decks. 35 total playable decks - $1.15 a deck. Definitely worth the price as long as you looked at the rule book.
You are half right with the decks. Yes, they can be used as a mono color deck, but it does suggest mixing them. They are in 2 archetypes, split evenly when fresh, and you can just split it and mix however you like. The little guide even suggests taking the common half of blue and green as an example.
Absolutely agree with you but I’m actually super pumped about this because this is exactly what my non magic playing friends have been wanting (the decks I have built for me already are either too complicated to play they say or definitely not balanced against each other) - like slow and grinds gameplay is probably the best way to get them to play with me 😅 I think this is a great way to get people started, and then I can focus on showing them how much better the game can be. Thanks for the review! 👍💚
I've watched this video twice now. Once before ordering and once after. I've been playing magic for about 15 years now both on paper and digitally. I lost all my paper cards about seven years ago from a house fire and never thought I'd want to collect again. I recently changed my mind after a coworker made a paper version of his cycling deck from arena. In response, I built a variation of my beloved colorless eldrazi arena deck but with spawnshire of ulamog as a main win condition. I live in a remote area on the California coast and I want some of my other coworkers to give the game a chance. This seems like the perfect way to teach people magic. It,s magic at its simplest form. I don't care about the over all value of the cards.I will definitely sleeve them though and it's unfortunate that they won't fit in the box after.
This Game Night box was my first experience playing magic. I've seen several Command Zone commander battles, and that inspired me to pick up this box set and try it out. I've played dozens of games with this set with my friends, and it has gotten all of us more interested in what magic has to offer. I agree that it does not show off everything that Magic has to offer, but it was a great introductory experience. As such, I would recommend new players to pick this set up, as it is extremely cheap for what you are getting.
I consider buying a box because you nearly get your money back and I just like how the decks are built. But I wouldn't leave them together and just take a card here to use IT in my other decks. If you want to get into magic or If you have a small collection of cards and you want to be able to trade with other people or just build a deck I can recommend it, as a battlebox I would prefere the guildkits just because they don't play like planeswalkerdecks at all.
My LGS sells the guild kitsch at MSRP, I rarely buy make-up product. I bought the battle box myself. I plan to allow the winner to swap out one card in their deck, so the decks evolve over time
Thanks for the video, I saw the price and some of the cards inside and jumped on it myself, your video makes me feel like I made a solid purchase. I'm going to take out a few of the cards I need for standard and attempt to replace them with similar cards to keep it balanced!
When this product was announced, I thought WOTC made this because of the beginner decks that Card Kingdom and Cool Stuff Inc sell. Of course, they are probably pushing this to cater to the board gaming crowd as well.
I just bought a Game Night Box to introduce my girl friend to MtG and we just love playing those decks against each other. I think this box works best if you want to show someone how great MtG is!
Bought this for Christmas this past week for my brothers and myself, and we are all now hooked. We all went out and bought Planeswalker decks and like 5 boosters each after playing with this thing for 1 night.... and I've also fallen down a MTG UA-cam rabbit hole... hello, by the way.
I made my own Game Night/Battle Box about a year ago and my friends have enjoyed it quite a bit. It contains 5 decks made up of the 5 friendly color combinations, each containing the same # of rares/mythics and with a focus on multiplayer effects. I use a decent number of Conspiracy cards since I enjoy the voting and parley elements they bring. I attend a decent number of "nerd conventions" where magic players are abound, but they typically didn't bring any cards, so this is a nice option to have for when 3 to 5 people want to have a sweet multiplayer experience in about an hour that doesn't require drafting/deck building, etc.
I've already done it! But with all 93 94 mono color decks. Merfolks, goblins, white weenie, black discard creatures, and green creatures. Threw acceleration in each deck and 2 psionic blast, 2 fork, crusade-army of allah, 2 sinkhole-3 bad moon, and 2 ice storm-2 berserk. It's pretty legendary lol
It was a bit pricy adding all the spells each favors like 4 legends chain lightnings, savannah lions and original swords, original counterspells, everything old school.
This product is perfect for my family. The guild kits are a bit too complex for my wife who enjoys magic but doesn't go out of her way to seek out optimal strategies and whatnot. My wife likes to sit down and play a game where the most complex things to do are perhaps combat tricks and a few spells here and there with a bit of synergy as well. I don't have the time nor the mindset to build balanced but fun decks for everyone to My son is growing up too and this enables him to play with me and my wife. It's simple enough for him to understand, unlike the other suggestions you put forth. It's also nice when I invite a few friends over who haven't played Magic before and we can sit down and play a game.
Don't forget about the subjects they talk about in the rulebook you can take apart the five decks in halves and combine them together to make other decks to allow for more color combinations
Wish there was a way to tell wotc the only paper product ive bought in years was the challenger decks because they actually play good magic games. I dunno there must be people buying these horrible playing precon products because wotc keeps pumping them out... but that will never be me. Wish they would bring back world championship decks, and if they do more challenger decks I'd probably buy those.
Its sad its the only thing I would assume to ve the reson is they are trying to pay thier *recent* artists buuuuut the protests dont make me so sure about this fact I unfortunately got into the game at origins and its a shame because I'm 28 and was playing pokemon tcg in 97 and I saw magic just never touched it and now that I am a player I look back and I see ALL THAT POWER that I missed out on all these years and it seems theres no way I can have access to that stuff ageain
Once when I talked to the guy from my LGS when I was still new to the game during the first Innistrad block I asked about the precon decks, it was weird because they had almost nothing in that area, he told me no one bought them so they didn't really bought that many. Even back then when a new player came and asked the players around the answer was the same: Don't buy that garbage, buy the singles. Up to this day I've yet to meet anyone that actually bought a precon decks.
@@Lexender When I was younger I once bought the Kamigawa Ninja Deck as well as the Snake Deck. If I remember right the Ninja Deck came along with 3 Seinsei's Divining Top of which I've traded away 2 of for 19,~€/each at some point around a year ago. They really were much more powerful that time than nowadays, but usually only few people realised the really powerful cards.
What about precon Commander decks? Every time I go through one I'm baffled by the power of some of those cards. I guess I haven't actually played with a lot of them, though, to see how well they work mechanically
I bought it in the past and I am very happy with this purchase even if it was not available in French. This box has a real tabletop game feel and I can play with pure newbies/casual players. Everything comes into the box (especially tokens !) and with all cards pro-fit sleeved it can stay put (I have to force them I admit). I use it in a vacation house and you can actually mix two colors so the possibilities are quite enough for the price and even if the decks are somewhat crappy they are not that boring to play. I will never mix the cards since to me it is a product on its own (plus 99,9% of my cards are in French so I do not like to mix the languages anyway).
A few points you didn't cover: 1. Each of the decks can be divided into two 30-card decks, by following the set symbol (one is M19, the other is Game Night). These half decks can also be combined with the half decks of other colours to easily make multicolour decks. 2. The box itself. There is a nice cutout in the middle for the +1/+1 counters. The slot for each of the decks is only big enough to fix the unsleeved deck, so if you want to sleeve these cards you'll have to get another storage container. I would also like to put the tokens separately, but there is no 6th card-sized slot for the tokens to go. 3. It contains a well written introductory rulebook for magic to explain to non-magic players how to play, a rulebook that's very similar to the rulebooks you get in most board games that give you all the information you need to play along with examples.
My husband’s workplace have this box. I asked him to borrow it so I could test what it was like to play MTG. He has played magic for almost 2 decades, but we have a fun time playing against each other. Our son has gotten into MTG too thanks to this box and bought his first own cards earlier this fall. I just ordered my first commander deck today and who knows, in the future I might get into constructing my own custom decks too. I think the game night box was a good starting point and not so intimidating. It makes it possible for beginners to win against experienced players.
You know profesor. I was with pitor and the imtg app. But after years of neglect even after i continued to support it. I am fully in with an offical app. So long as that app allows me to keep binders with the cards i need and decks.
I've been watching MTG videos lately even though I haven't really played it. Today I ordered the Game Night box online so I could give it a go with my brother or a friend or whoever wants to play it. Seemed like the best option since it comes with 5 different decks allowing a lot of different matching options, and the price was only about 30€ with shipping included. Hoping to enjoy the game :)
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my gaming group. We tend to order singles and make relatively strong decks with amazing spells and some creatures. Games fan out generally in a similar way. We played this for 5 or 6 games and we really enjoyed it. The decks were relatively balanced except the blue one which won three in a row. It made us focus on combat and its rules and a lot of scenarios came that we hadn't had before. Plus each game was different. I actually preferred playing with these than with our decks full of rares and 4-ofs.
I've been playing MTG arena for about 6 months and pre-ordered this box for about £28 as a way to get into paper magic, introduce the game to my friends and family and play over the holidays. For this use case, I have found the product to be perfect.
I think this is literally the first of your videos I've ever seen that has any mistakes in it, lol. I think you're allowed one! Also I sort of like this box, the multiplayer concept is interesting and it seems like a weird take or alternative to a couple of intro packs or the Spellslinger kit for introducing people to Magic. Like, you can't start with Commander decks, I've been playing digital Magic for years and can barely get a handle on paper Commander myself (I really miss those nice "you can play this card now" halos in my IRL games)
Thanks professor. I was fool hardy enough to purchase this at Hardtop for 45 bucks. Then wally world had it for msrp.... Thanks to ur video showing contents..... I ll be returning this to the store.
I was definitely interested in this product when announced, as one of the MTG gaming circles among my friends is extremely kitchen-table casual. Having seen your review, I think I would agree that the sheer price makes (or keeps) it a good option. I may prefer more interactive and strategic gameplay myself, but there's no real way to obtain the cards needed for that kind of battlebox at a price I can justify. Incidentally I think the comparison to a board game here is very favorable for Wizards, since $40 is a fair or even cheap price for one, while say with Magic singles, I tend to run into the problem of, "wait, how many Steam games could I get instead of even this one playset that won't get me anywhere on its own?"
It was during the great LiquidTV era of MTV, where aeon flux was still 1 min cartoon shorts, and The MAXX was fighting little wierd creatures that only existed in his psychotic imagination
Yep got one myself many years ago - back when MTV had it's own animation house and they did some excellent weird outsider stuff. Besides Aeon Flux, MTVs Oddities also did a great series called The Head which is brilliant and had a similar animation vibe to Beavis and Butthead!
As "replacement" for Game Night, I intend to make a battle box with guild kits. I already have Boros, Izzet and Selesnya, and I'll probably pick Simic, Azorius and Gruul (maybe Orzhov too) once they are out.
How about Mark Rosewater’s Magic: The Puzzeling book? Not really a “book about Magic,” but I loved the puzzles back in the day, and some of them are still solveable with current Magic rules and these days I don’t think players don’t know the history of Maro’s involvement with the game. And it’s a great story. I wish they’d bring “The Puzzeling” back in some form.
Took this to a 6 night retreat in a cabin. Big hit played with 4 other people that never played magic. Way better than duel decks. I'm glad I didnt have my personal deck, felt things were more even. I even lost some games without allowing myself to lose. After 4 days we ended up going to wallmart for boosters. Great intro. I'll buy any of these game night boxes.
i got this mainly for the decks but keep playing with it at lunch with friends the whole week. i of course modified the decks to not feel pre constructed and it seems to have worked.
The same thing can be said about the new Commander products. all four of them are below retail on Amazon. Last I checked Exquisite invention was $26ish. If I didn't own it I would right now in fact I'm half contemplating buying it just to have two copies of brudiclad along with a few extras that would help me build a deck with him as the commander
Question: Everyone always says with these recent exclusive-to-a-boxed-product cards that they are printed as rares or mythics or whatever. Does that mean anything? It doesn't determine rarity. They have a 100% chance of being in their box, and 0% anywhere else. Do those words mean ANYTHING but that they colored their symbol orange this time?
I purchased this at my local game store on sale for $32 purely as something to introduce my wife, 9 and 7 year old sons and possibly friends with no previous magic experience to the game without being overwhelmed. The booklet offers up the idea of splitting each deck and creating dou color decks if the mono color gameplay becomes stale.. im wondering if that would make gameplay feel any less grindy.
I will say my only thought about this product is that the exclusive cards being printed as mythic rare. That seems to say to me that while they would make interesting additions as reprints in later preconstructed commander decks, the likelihood of seeing them at all is low, and if we do it will mean seeing them over other more needed reprints. I really do wish they had made the cards rare rather than mythic rare.
Maybe a beginner tutorial explaining how the 5 decks play, to instruct brand new players? So i can invite non-MtG players for a casual gamenight, and direct them to youtube to learn how to play with and against the gamenight decks.
someone at WOTC/Hasbro has decided that they want the board game experience. we've seen it multiple times now, the ixalan game, the battlegrounds game. They want to find a product for those people that have a pile of board games to have a mtg board game to just pull out and play. I think it's a neat idea it'll be interesitng to see what later iterations look like.
I love all these videos of is it worth it. I think it would be super cool if you made your own pre-con product that you would see as a (close to) perfect product!
So I'm the only magic player in my family, but I bought this product for my family. I don't really enjoy it because I'm an experienced magic player, but it IS a good product for newer players. They really did enjoy the product.
This box set it GREAT for scratching that itch. I was a die hard player back in the early 90's and again during 7th. Game is just to hard to get back into and collect. Sets like this really help with giving the ability to play and not make ya wanna blow all your cash. If you wanna just play the game here and there, this is a really good set to get.
Whoa! Sorry about those couple mistakes that got left in! It seems my program auto uploaded my 'second to last' draft instead of the final draft. I know why it did that and it won't happen again! Embarrassing and deep apologies for those hiccups!
I personally believe the mistakes make the video rather quirky and enjoyable. : )
probably the 3rd time i've seen this similar type of mistake in the last week or two. Still appreciate the content though. Keep up the good work.
It's okay, Prof. We all make mistakes.
@@devunit2369 Thanks.

Okay Pam
Even with the mistakes it’s that good ol’ charm that makes me laugh. Can we get this on a shirt?
As a table top enthusiast, many of my friends are usually coming into the night with absolutely no knowledge of the game or game play. This product would sit well with other table top games, and I can't imagine tearing it apart just for the cards. I think this product has amazing potential to throw Magic into any VERY casual game night with non-magic players.
I agree and I think that is very much where it is aimed. I think it goes a long way to explain the simplistic card choices.
I actually got 8 ppl hooked on magic w this
We love it. Makes it easy to learn, but still complex enough to be engaging -
Tetrygon I agree.
The simple mono color decks make this a great tool for teaching new players the basics.
This is one of the most honest reviews I've watched on The Professor's channel. Thank you.
4:56 contains a simple line switcheroo where the Sphinx is iterated twice in a row with two conflicting staments; one saying the Sphinx is the lowest priced and another saying the Goliath is the lowest.
yeah just a simple editing hiccup where he corrected but didn't cut the first line out
another mistake in audio editing exists 8:41 where you repeat a line adding a few extra words
So how would this compare to a box of Game Afternoon or the more elusive Game Morning?
Marcel Dyer can't compare really
I would Love to get my hands on a box of Game Morning, but it's just SO rare!
Nobody plays Game Morning. We are all asleep after a longer round of Game Night.
The real value is in the Game Afternoon Delight.
Game Night is designed to last a longer than the boxes Game Afternoon and Game Morning, as it has less of a time constraint
Oh shit, that's pretty neat. I'd like to know too!
The double color option seems like a way to get some more complex gameplay in there that the professor was lamenting about missing.
I love the mix and match feature, I am looking at the 2019 box but I DK if it has that same feature
Seems like a good deal for something you can just pull off the shelf and play with others who perhaps have never played Magic before.
Professor, that was a really good intro.
He spit hot fire...of course it was
I love how professional and informative you are. Your videos are always worth a watch to me, as they provide excellent value.
Thanks for this. My wife is new to magic and I haven't really played since Kamigawa block, but we've both gotten into Magic thanks to MTG Arena. We're slowly expanding into picking up some physical cards with Planeswalker decks and the gift set, and this was on our list to be purchased next.
don't do the planeswalkers or the gift set
get a guild kit; guild kits are actually competitively viable
@@madhatten00 we mostly play on Arena though, since our local store only does sealed and drafts (which we're not very interested in), and at least those come with codes we can use online too.
I thought the guild kits were not standard legal either, correct?
@@Creator846 true they're really for modern
but i don't bother playing with precon standard cause it's easier to draft
you'll get a lot of the standard cards you will need through draft
which actually provides you a proper way to test out new cards etc.
and then everything else is bought as singles
trust me, you and your wife going to one draft event (you keep the decks btw) is probably worth more than going and buying that planeswalker deck; and your draft decks are totally viable anyways aside from being only 40 cards, which you easily fix by slapping on some singles and like 5 more lands
Professor, I found this set at my local game store for $29 just yesterday! Totally worth it for that price.
When you realize prof has bars...lol
I spit hot fire.
She said take your coat off, i said the mans not hot
Your favourite rapper's favourite Magic: the Gathering UA-camr
Funny thing about this is that I listen to a rapper named “prof” from time to time.
@@trumpetperson11 the gameplay from these were actually really enjoyable when I was learning the game
I really enjoyed the rhyming at the beginning and also you bringing up the point about it being a personal opinion. I enjoy your opinions
Honestly, if you can handle a bit more of a price jump, go for the 4 challenger decks. They're much more interesting of a game...
This is my thing, it feels like multicolor decks would be harder for new players to learn.
Finally, I was waiting for you to review this piece! Now, it's here! Thanks!
I want to thank you for reuniting my love for Magic
That part is in the booklet you get.
best and most concise review of the most recent Game Knights I've seen.
Thanks man, I'm a casual MtG player and your videos help me a great deal in picking ouit the right product to buy for me and my partner.
Love you prof.! This is just what I needed!
Oh man, that The Maxx in the back ground. Reminds me of those comics. Miss that artist.
Thanks for always looking out for our wallets and interests professor! Please keep up the great work, your content is amazing.
I plan to allow the winner to swap out one card in their deck, so the decks evolve over time
This sounds fun :)
You're getting enough sleep, right? Make sure you take care of yourself.
I most certainly am not getting enough sleep.
This is what being a teacher (or a professor, rather) feels like.
We're together in this, Prof.
I just bought a Game Night Box to introduce my girl friend to MtG and we just love playing those decks against each other. I think this box works best if you want to show someone how great MtG is!
I agree, new players need to get comfy once they see how combo potential in these decks then upgrade the decks
One thing about this product is that it inspires me to make my own Gamenight box with my magic buddies.
I don't have the time nor the mindset to build balanced but fun decks for everyone to
My son is growing up too and this enables him to play with me and my wife.
Even the old precons were cooler; I still have decks based off some of them, and they did fairly well in their day.
Its sad its the only thing I would assume to ve the reson is they are trying to pay thier *recent* artists buuuuut the protests dont make me so sure about this fact
I unfortunately got into the game at origins and its a shame because I'm 28 and was playing pokemon tcg in 97 and I saw magic just never touched it and now that I am a player I look back and I see ALL THAT POWER that I missed out on all these years and it seems theres no way I can have access to that stuff ageain
I bought this box to try to introduce the game to a few friends and we actually had a blast. It's just perfect to introduce people to the game !
I have been waiting for this review!
Me too.
In the booklet, it shows that some decks can be mixed and matched by the set symbol on the card. Giving you at least 20 two-color decks to play with.
A few points you didn't cover:
Big point here. I don't mind bulk cardboard these sorts of products. But not if there is too much recent bulk I lose interest.
Was able to pick one up today at a Barnes and noble for 50% off. lools like they are clearing em out
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my gaming group.
But Prof! How about the box itself? Can I store the decks in it with sleeves? That would be a major plus on the product.
I've been playing MTG arena for about 6 months and pre-ordered this box for about £28 as a way to get into paper magic, introduce the game to my friends and family and play over the holidays. For this use case, I have found the product to be perfect.
I bought it and this is my favorite product that I’ve bought I think this is perfect for teaching people how to play
There are sooo many cards printed over the years. 25 years worth! It would be so neat to see and play with older sets mixed into newer ones.
Love your thoroughness Professor!
I bought the dimir guild kit. I've asked for the lot for Christmas because I liked it so much. Great way to play with friends.
Thanks for the review prof. I didnt know a lot about this product and assumed it would be pretty bad. Happy to find out it's actually pretty cool.
Always great to see these videos
Sweet copy of 'The Maxx' in the background. A wonderful weird comic.
Dude has a VHS copy of The Maxx??? I didn't even know they made one!!
I've got VHS copies of The Maxx, but I taped them myself :3
Anyone know bat some cheap decks with legendary cards in them?
Thanks
As "replacement" for Game Night, I intend to make a battle box with guild kits. I already have Boros, Izzet and Selesnya, and I'll probably pick Simic, Azorius and Gruul (maybe Orzhov too) once they are out.
the information you put into your videos is so awesome. thanks a lot
Also note that the art of the lands in this set are EXCLUSIVE to this set, including Islands by Mark Poole
4:45 what? had me very confused.
i got this mainly for the decks but keep playing with it at lunch with friends the whole week. i of course modified the decks to not feel pre constructed and it seems to have worked.
Would this be a good place to start for someone who doesnt kno2 what color they want to use?
sean bean taught me about magic the gathering thank you sean bean
One does not simply buy a Magic The Gathering product.
I played this with inexperienced friends and it worked great. Very fun set.
You can likely use the game night set to build baseline mono-colored commander decks ex: goreclaw, krenko, sai, ect...
Hey! I have the same Twin Peaks VHS box set at too!
Great taste
I was just about to buy this actually , the professor can read minds
I saw this at Target a week or so ago, and KNEW you would make a video about it!
Me too lol I kinda just wait to buy any mtg product until one of his videos come out reviewing it
Friend of mine purchased this and four of use played and we had a lot of fun. I beat em with the black deck but I kept losing with the green...
