Les chasseurs alpins sont des fantassins de l'Armée de terre française spécialisés dans le combat en milieu montagneux depuis 1888. Ils appartiennent à la fois au corps des chasseurs à pied et aux troupes de montagne.
The chasseurs alpins (English: Alpine Hunters) are the elite mountain infantry force of the French Army. They are trained to operate in mountainous terrain and in urban warfare.

Thank you for presenting to the world this special unit of the French army. It is one of the best in the world in its specialty, a true elite unit that fought in 1940 without having been defeated, and that was engaged in all the theatres of recent operations against Daesh.

Ca fait plaisir voir les chasseurs francais. On a en Autriche une unité alpine de façon similaire qui s'appelle "Gebirgsjäger", c'est bien avoir une défense européenne qui garde notre montagnes, regions et gens.
et on peut aussi ajouter les Alpini italien.

When I was in college, I did ROTC, so one day I had my uniform on, and my classmate (who was French) approached me and asked me to explain what I did with the US Army etc etc. I figured he didn't know anything about it so I gave him some of the basic details, only to have him reveal to me that he had served with the French Chasseurs Alpins hahaha! I felt silly
Hello to France. Je suis un ancien chasseur du 27éme bataillon de chasseur alpin. De 1994. Je vous promet que le matériel n étais pas au niveau actuel, on en a chier, mais cela.a.fait de nous des hommes.
et la 90/06, on avait encore moins d'equipment. Mais on a reussi quand meme.
Bof.
Au Canada, point besoin d'équipement high-tech. On est né dans la neige, on fait nos propres skis et raquettes avec ce que nous donne la forêt. On assome les ours avec nos poings et fait de très bon steak cuits sur pierre chaudes avec cette viande. Et nos adversaires, on les élimine avec nos tomahawks géants quand on est paresseux. Sinon on utilise une bonne claque sur la gueule et si on veut faire de l'esbrouffe, alors on utilise nos poings comme avec les ours.... Voilà comment les vrais hommes du froid agisseent! :D

i've been a "chasseurs alpins ", section SR I spent my time digging igloos and doing RECON,fantastic time with my best mates it was like a brotherhood ,some people would have paid a fortune to do what we did ,always off piste something that I will never forget is skiing at mignight ,clear sky and only the moon as a light .

My father was a chasseur alpin. He learnt to ski like a boss there. He had a great time.
In the 80s my dad had to do its mandatory military service, he was asked if was more into navy or mountain infantry he chose mountain infantry (27e BCA) cause "yeah I like skiing!" It's one of the most physical intensive training units, finally he has good memories but at first he was regretting :D
The Royal Tank Corp adopted the Black Beret of the Chasseurs Alpin... and it was passed on to the Royal Australian Armoured Corp. I still have my Black Beret with an RAAC Badge.

Good to know, the French Chasseurs Alpins and the Italian Alpinis was the first to use beret to represent their culture but UK was the first to regulary use the beret.

The French mountain troops beret (also worn by the artillery regiment , the 93ème RAM) is originally the Bearnese shepeherds beret. The RTC black beret was adopted by other branches of the Army albeit dark blue ( except paratroopers : red , Foreign Legion : green Army light aviation : royal blue) and bent leftwards.
The French commandos marine ( which are Navy) are the only unit in the French military who are wearing their green berets bent rightwards ( British style) as a reminder the corps was first set up in the UK during WWII and trained in Achnaccary together with the SBS under Lord Lovat.

The béret of thé Chasseurs Alpins is different from the Classic French béret. It is larger. So you can put your feet in it. It is called « la tarte » (the tart).

Trop sympa...mais il y avait autrefois l'infanterie alpine comme le 15.9 RIA basé à Briançon qui fut le premier corps en France à essayer, puis à fabriquer des skis et à créer une école de ski militaire, Il aida le Club alpin français à organiser le premier concours international de ski dans les alpes en 1907... Ce fut ainsi plus tard l'origine des sections SES (éclaireurs skieurs...)

Might be a dumb question but what’s the strategic value of holding random mountain passes that don’t have roads or any cities of strategic value?
Other troops proficient in mountain warfare could infiltrate through those passes and flank you. Also training like this prepares you for arctic or winter warfare generally. Guerrilla warfare frequently occurs in mountainous regions as well, see Afghanistan for example.
Because when you have to go get badguys in those kind of terrains and climate you'd better have people trained to or be ready to lose half your men to frostbite, ravines and ambushes.
Well, France southern (Spain) and eastern (Italy/Switzerland) borders are all just snowy moutains so it's nice to have troops able to defend them, but I don't think they're a primarily defensive asset. They're named "alpin hunters" for a reason: their main role is to "hunt" enemies that would use the protection of snow and moutains to avoid regular troops. Since vehicles and regular infantry can't access this terrain, it's perfect for insurgents fighting a guerilla, and so it's nice to have soldiers that can deal with it.

During the battle of Alps, in 1940, in less than 3 weeks, the Italian and german troops lost 6500 men and the French Alpine hunters with their mountain artillery less than 600 men.
The axis did not gain any significant territory and got butchered. I hope it answers your question.

C'est un choix politique pour nous cloisonner sur du matériel allemand. On a exactement le même scénario sur notre prochain blindé lourd. Nos gouvernements successifs espèrent que l'Allemagne nous laisse la conception du prochain chasseur en contrepartie. A l'heure actuelle on a rien.

If the Chasseurs Alpins aren't "elite infantry", almost nothing on this planet is. "Elite" isn't just used to describe SOF units or commandos but units or corps that really excel in their field. Special forces/commandos aren't infantry anyway. Nobody calls them "elite infantry" for that term to be inappropriate for the Chasseurs Alpins lmao. The GCM are commandos/pathfinders of the French Mountain troops, so a commando unit within the elite infantry corps that is the Chasseurs Alpins.

A lot of countries consider the Alpin's hunter as elite troops, France might not but for instance the US consider them almost like SOF, but I agree they are regular troops, only a part is actually "elite"

Hey Frere! In France, we were not elite force but every other infantry regiment who came to train as a stage with us, there were suffering, therefore we are better than any other infantry. We fought in Afghanistan, in Norway. Even the legion and the paratrooper don't do that - So Respect! Chasseur un jour - Chasseur toujours (hunter one day - hunter for ever).

J'ai été chasseur-alpin en 1967-1968 (16 mois). La discipline était très abrupte , l'atmosphère en chambrée très agressive Tous les appelés ne parlaient que de foutre le camp . De plus , en quoi ces régiments seraient des élites ? Par définition , une élite serait un corps supérieur aux autres . Le sont-ils ?

You can see in the video that the French army has used the FRF2 precision shooting rifle for 30 years, and the equipment of the French army is still far from that of the American army.

pretty much all the equipement has or is in the process of beeing replaced. FR F2 is beeing replaced at this time by a scar H version with an excellent sighting system, all troop carriers are in the process of beeing changed too
the FRF2 is my favorite rifle of all time, fun fact : it's a HEAVY modified MAS36 as far as i remember
FRF2 is one of the best sniper rifles in 7.62x51, far superior that the ones used in the US forces

Mouais ça aurait pu fonctionner sauf que les bataillons de Chasseurs à pied sont plus anciens que les Cacciatori delle Alpi et les Bataillons s’appellent Alpin car ils s'agit de Chasseurs à pied positionnés dans les Alpes donc "Alpin".
Ça suit la même logique de nom que les autres bataillons comme les Chasseurs d'Orléans, Chasseurs cyclistes, Chasseurs portés, Chasseurs à pied parachutistes, ou Chasseurs mécanisés.
