When you are a beginner in the game, your first instict is to start with the straggler trees. As is the case with farms and the other sources of food, you first think of getting what resources you can without having to spend resources first (building a lumbercamp). You don't yet think in terms of efficiency nor have you yet developed long-term planning, you just consider them free starting resources, like sheep.
Funny thing. When played Conquerors like more then 20 years ago I didn't know you could eat sheep or other wild life. So I started with building a lumbercamp and put the villagers on wood. When I had enough wood built a mill after that farms. Didn't know you could collect berries aswell. Would play with 20 villagers till imperial age where I got every upgrade and tech and attack the AI with every unit that could be made :D
The thing I love about this is that I absolutely knew blue would win to start, then I knew for a fact yellow would win, then it had to be blue.... what a roller coaster ride

Blue seems to have put his advice to use very quickly, too. T90 says to make scorps, he makes scorps, T90 says to make Boyars, he makes Boyars, both minutes after he said it. Good boy.

Man I love how t90 get really mad bout the straggler trees and talk bout it like 10 minutes streight buts totally cool bout blue sitting on 10k resources for like half of the game
Straggler trees are a simple and conscious decision, whereas floating resources is a macro issue that is much harder to fix.

Also the utility of straggler trees is not usually know from casuals or noobs, but if got a bit of thinking u notice that u got a lot of resources and us em, he was under atack at that time and dont even queued units for defend himself god
You have to remember there are kids playing this game so build orders, efficiency, straggler trees, doesnt really matter to them they just play for fun. I play with my 10 year old brother and he makes like 12 villagers max and he says 3 on wood 3 on food 3 on gold and 3 on stone that should be good. Then he makes like 5 man at arms and I surround his base with 200 elite war elephants.
You should also send a hostage negotiator to make sure the villagers make it out alive!

This was not just cutting the head of the longswordsmen, this was reducing their bodies to atoms!
Playing this video in 0.5 makes this all the better. Makes t90 sound drunk, which I always imagine he needs to be when casting this, especially because of the straggler trees being chopped.

Apparently this dude "nomad" only plays Slavs and I happened to have queued up against him right after T90's LEL stream which featured his episode, and since it was my first 10 ranked game I got to play with this true legend. But I didn't have much time then and I planned to do a Persian douche against him and succeeded ... I felt so bad for this dude and hope his Slavs fest continues on.

yellow seems more like a starcraft player. He is obsessed with keeping his resources down, and is loathe to save for new ages etc
nah just old school aoe. This is aoeonline player when we were on MSN/AOL networks.
he reminded me of a zerg player. Expand around the entire map and spam units all around
keeping resources down is important. Floating 10k or 20k resources for no reason is not a good plan.
Can I just say, as a new player to AoE, I love Low Elo Legends. I have learnt so much more about how to play the game from watching LeL than I have from watching tutorial's because its like a step by step of what not to do and things that I used to think that's not so bad usually get explained in commentary, like "oh he's doing this but you shouldn't because ..." Plus its so much more entertaining and keeps you engaged. That and a lot of tutorial's kinda give you a build order and say here's how you start and then past that build order I'm kinda like.. well what now?? Please never stop making these hahaha.

When you told others who always upgrade Supplies to do what yellow was doing (in the beginning, where it made sense), I thought to myself "as long as you don't over-focus on it, especially if you're being countered", and then I watched the rest of the video. RIP yellow's millions of lost souls, may their supplies guide them in the afterlife.

I've never played this game but watching your videos makes it seem like this game is honestly very fun with an extreme learning curve, where I've never played an RTS but interested in picking this game up what would you suggest?

best if you do it all! watch pros play, practice build orders against the AI and also play rated games. hera is a pro who has good build order tutorials here on youtube.
Honestly I suck at this game but it's still fun to play and learn. Definitely get the definitive edition if you decide to go for it, there are so many quality of life improvements in it I honestly find it hard to go back now.

Lol that’s actually a pretty great idea if you don’t find your sheep fast enough. But that can be a problem because that’s idle time for your tc
hi wayne wayne! i do build 2 houses first so that the tc can make vills from the starting food supply so it's active while they chop usually. :)

T90. I used to do stragglers trees too. My main mindset for that is, "I need wood. This vil will gather wood. Whats the closest place I can move that vil from their starting location in order to get wood without travel time (lumber camp far from TC)? How about quickly click the vil onto a tree nearby TC while doing other things. Then take vil off straggler and place lumber camp. Then use straggler chopped down to place clean farms around TC."
Maybe the order of things is a bit off but honestly I don't get the big issue with stragglers initially. My main thing is to reduce vil downtime as much as possible. Which includes walking to a tree line to build a camp.

If you chop all the stragglers than the enemy can’t use them to figure out where your TC is. Also in blues shoes I would build a monestary and get relics for the gold. Maybe even fortify his position with my own towers.

Because if they r scouting and see your straggler trees they will know your TC is there and potentially save a scout. I a Tatoh vs whong I think it was then they were having a hun war and whong saw the straggler trees and immediately knew that Tatohs tc was there. It was a sad game because Tatoh lost.

Also I think Mill before lumber camp is the meta for low APM players so they can keep vill production going without having to rely on luring boar/pushing deer

Hmmm interesting, I just started playing this game a couple weeks ago and got placed 1068. I wish I played against kids doing build order like this. My opponent usually has 5 scouts on my base before I click feudal 😂

I hate creating farms without Horse Collar first. So I often put a bunch of villagers on the straggler trees when the feudal is being researched (usually towards the end of the research) and during the Horse Collar research time. Once Horse Collar is researched, I take my villagers from the stragglers to farms, usually creating like 5-6 farms immediately.
I know I shouldn't do that, but I just hate building non-horse collared farms...

Wouldn't be surprised if he'd made houses with one villager as often as possible.

I'm not really sure you can say that Yellow is less focused on economy than Blue, when Yellow have only 20 vills late after being raid and Blue having a good 10 minutes with 3 o 4 TC against 1 XD
T90, i chopped straggler trees too few month ago. I did it because the trees were a problem when you collect all berries with 10 vills and start placing farms 😅

Hey T90, about the whole straggler tree thing... I think it makes perfect sense to do it, but you're thinking as a 2k player so you don't get it: this behavior comes from the experience of being constantly raided in the woodline and it's all about bad multi-tasking and low APM... It takes for ever to a noob to scout in a proper way and it's all about finding woodlines, so meanwhile you want to have some wood income and then build the lumbercamp when you find all your wood options (so you will know in advance where to rebuild your lumbercamp after being raided or towered).
Since I played the game from when it came out in 1999, IIRC - and I could very well be wrong- the build guides of that era advised chopping off stragglers as you sent people to gather berries. that might have even been AOE1 though. What i definitely remember was people advising leaving one space between the berries and the gatherers. It still doesn't make sense not leaving one tile of space, it seems so cramped and yet I do it now, because that's what people in the know say it should be done.
For a good few of Hera's build orders he says you should chop the stragglers. It isn't as inefficient as you think it is T90

Blue was really comfortable at Dark age and Feudal but after that he no longer knew what to do and had to wing it, especially after Yellow's relentless spam
