India was fighting outsiders. We where essentially fighting with our own pepole.
This is why we hold our flag in such high regard. It never touches the ground, it's always illuminated and I will fly Old Glory till the day I die.

1) George Washington said "I would rather die on my feet than live on my knees" this misquoting of the father of the nation is akin to blasphemy
2)This occurred during the War of 1812, thus the term "colonies" is totally inappropriate. England had recognized the US as a sovereign nation for 30 years prior to this event.
3) The war of 1812 wasn't particularly long or bloody as wars go. It ended not long after the battle of Baltimore.
4)The US started the war, and Britain's only aim was to end it quickly and resume trade. There was never any threat of return to British rule.
5) Francis Scott Key went privately to secure the release of one friend (Dr William Beanes), he wasn't "sent" by anyone else and he represent no one else.
6) Fort McHenry (not "Fort Henry") was most definitely a military installation. It was completed in 1800. It had masonry walls and roof 13 ft thick plus dirt above. It mounted 20 heavy guns (18, 24 and 32 pounder cannon),was garrisoned by 1,000 soldiers, and the only civilians present were the wives, children and household servants of some of the senior officers and senior NCO's (as was customary at the time).
7) there were only 19 Royal Navy ships present, 5 bomb ketches and 1 Congreve rocket ship escorted by 7 frigates and 3 schooners, plus 3 smaller transports, NOT "hundreds of ships". Such a tiny squadron couldn't possibly be called a hundredth of the firepower of the Royal Navy - there wasn't a single "line of battle" ship present.
8) The majority of the shelling was by only 6 ships - the escorts only got close enough to fire once but they were rapidly hit by return fire and withdrew with 1 casualty aboard HMS Surprise. (The recent addition of the 32 pounders was a shock to the attackers, since they had been added just a couple of days before the battle)
9) there were only 28 casualties in Fort McHenry 24 wounded and 4 killed.
10)the flagpole at Ft McHenry today is an exact replica of the one that stood there in 1814, it's 90+ feet tall solid wood and weighs over a ton, now how do you explain that it was held up manually? The laws of physics and gravity say that didn't happen! Much less be propped up by 4 dead bodies?
So, yes, it's almost entirely false.

My grandfather once told me our flag doesn't fly in the wind but in the final breath of the fallen soldiers that willingly sacrificed their lives to keep it standing r.i.p. pawpaw ur war story's will always stay with me and if it ever comes a time where I need to stand on my feet instead of living on my knees I promise I will stand and that is why we stand for our flag and national anthem remember that when you decide to neal at the anthem

People often make fun of Americans for being way too proud to be American, but you have to remember that while being such a young country we've gone through the ringer to become what we are today. So we have good reason to be proud of ourselves. I just wish more of us were more curious about other cultures so we can join the "conversation" without sounding like idiots.
Same. I wish more of the people who say "we should be proud of our self" didn't seem to think ONLY our selves and more folks who argue "other countries have history too!" Weren't talking with the Subtext of "America Sucks". History is AMAZING and ugly and triumphant and filled with struggles that people fought through so we could live in something better. Frankly we should ALL be curious af about the history of every country! And proud af of ourselves AND them! Look at how far we came! What we survived! What we MADE!! Humanity is awesome and those are our brothers and sisters and cousins. They did a good job and were brave amazing complexe and fallible people!

Not only is the Flag Never to be on the ground, it is never to be dipped to anyone unlike every other country's flag in the world. The American Olympic Team in 1908 had a bunch of large Irish Catholic New York Policemen on it. The tradition was that as the competing countries teams with their nation's flag and a placard with the country's name on it at the head passed the Royal Box they would dip their Colors in Salute to the Host Nation. The Flag and Placard Bearers were hired from the local area. The Largest Irish Cop pulled the Flag Bearer aside before the opening parade and told the Londoner "Look Boyo. If you dip that flag the only thing that will beat you to the Hospital is the lights on the Ambulance. That Flag dips to no earthly King!" Or words to that effect. The Flag was not dipped to the English Royal Family. This was a major scandal and started the Tradition that the American Flag is Dipped for NO ONE!

I am afraid you are wrong. The flag is routinely dipped by American war ships as a salute when passing ships of allied countries. I know this because I was a signalman in the Navy and it was part of my job.

My mom from Spain says that another' flag can only fly if the U.S. flag flies together with it or above it in the U.S. She's always loved the U.S. flag. The flag represents freedom which includes freedom of speech, which is not exclusive. There are limits to free speech--"Time, place, and manner. Limitations based on time, place, and manner apply to all speech, regardless of the view expressed. They are generally restrictions that are intended to balance other rights or a legitimate government interest." The violations of Freedom of Speech include: "Obscenity. Fighting words. Defamation (including libel and slander) Child pornography." Even burning the flag, as much as it hurts to see it, is protected free speech as the U.S. Supreme Court in Texas v. Johnson--"The majority of the Court, according to Justice William Brennan, agreed with Johnson and held that flag burning constitutes a form of "symbolic speech" that is protected by the First Amendment."
I am a proud Canadian .. this story no matter how many times i watch it .. I always always always cry .. I am crying now all I can say please let us learn from history or we are doomed to repeat it .. RIP all who fell defending the flag

Although we have allowed the enemy 'so much' reign (to the ignorant, we look bad), his time has come to an end and you will see, without a doubt, how much we are loved. I`m canadian and that`s the first time I heard that story, and it brought a tear and a lump to my throat, that`s why history is so important. I see now why most Americans are so proud of their flag, I think that story needs to be retold and shouted from the hilltops because too many people don`t know or have forgotten what freedom really means because we are standing at that very crossroad again, so people of the western hemisphere wake up because the shells are coming fast and hard and once again the flag is falling, do we still have the balls to save it like we did in our history. That goes for the Canadians too, wake up.
As an American from the South, oh I guarantee that there are tens of millions of Americans that won't let this happen. They're getting restless, they're not quit ready to get all revolutionary, but they're also not going to bow down either..

Yes, our nation has its share of terrible corporations, evil politicians, and dark days of history, but that is what makes America beautiful. Our country has always bounced back and found a way to overcome the challenges it faces. At heart, this is true America- freedom justice, and opportunity. We were taught in school our role as the leader in the world is to bring these democratic beliefs to everyone so everyone can be freedom and have an opportunity to live a good life. I'm an immigrant to this great nation. I was adopted and brought here as a baby of a few months. HOWEVER, no one can tell me I'm not 10000000000% American. As my father, an immigrant like me, likes to say: 'America has more enemies within it than outside of it.' But I assure you that there are those of us, true patriots that love our nation, are willing to fight and die for her. I cannot comprehend how some ingrates are born in this nation and hate it. They were blessed to be natural born citizens and don't know how privileged they are. I hate what's happening to our nation by those who would seek to destroy her and tear her apart. But, we ain't gonna let that happen. Our flag is still here!
I am not an American but every time I hear this song it bring tears to my eyes having understood the history behind the song.. The miracle flag of the world held up by human sacrifice. Oh what sacrifice and devotion for one's country, God bless America!!!!
My family has fought in every major battle since the Revolution. I cant hardly hear the National Anthem without shedding a tear every time.

Your words to God's ears! Many Americans hate their own country. But, those who love the U.S. will always fight for our beautiful nation!
That's why we are taught even as little kids to NEVER let the flag touch the ground. You will see a 3 year old holding the flag and every time it gets near the ground someone will push their hand up and tell them don't let it touch the ground hold it high. So even before we know why we do it we learn keep it from falling. 🇺🇸
Everyone in the world respect their national flag and everyone are taught to not let it touch the ground. So, you're nothing special. The only difference is that your indoctrination with flags and patriotic fairy tales is so radical, that even the Nazi Germany fails in comparison with US.

Though the story here gets a few things wrong, the story itself is true. That very flag can be seen in all of it's tattered glory at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. today. Seeing it in person was a very grounding experience, at least it was for me.
It's not just a few things. It's about 90% wrong. People need to stop asking for reactions to this video!
I do like this channel though and did subscribe as they are pretty funny together.
This story is very close to 99% inaccurate. Factual errors -
1) this battle occurred during the War of 1812 (Sept 13-15th of 1814 to be exact), and the term "colonies" is totally inappropriate.
2) England had recognized the US as a sovereign nation for 31 years prior to the battle, the US started the war, and return to British rule was never an objective of the British.
3) Francis Scott Key went privately to secure the release of one friend (Dr William Beanes). He wasn't "sent" by anyone, and did not represent anyone else. He went to HMS Tonnant with the appointed prisoner exchange officer (Colonel Skinner). They were received as guests and dined aboard with the senior officers (which would be normal for a well known lawyer seeking the release of a prominent physician). While aboard they had overhead discussions of plans to attack Baltimore, so to prevent them from giving advance warning, he, Dr Beanes and Col Skinner were put aboard the pilot sloop "Minden" and towed by HMS Surprise to Baltimore before being released once the attack was imminent and they could no longer give advance warning.
4) They watched the attack from 5 miles away from the fort, then proceeded to Baltimore. They did not disembark at the fort.
5) Fort McHenry was most definitely a military installation completed in 1800 with masonry walls and roof 13 ft thick (plus dirt above), mounting 20 heavy guns (18, 24 and 32 pounder cannon), an additional earthwork battery ( seaward of the fort) with (4) 32 pounder cannon which was completed just before the battle, and was garrisoned by 1,000 men.

7) There were only 28 casualties in Fort McHenry, 24 wounded and 4 killed.

9) There were only 19 Royal Navy ships present 5 bomb ketches (each with two 10 inch mortars) 1 Congreve rocket ship, escorted by 7 frigates and 3 schooners, plus 3 smaller transports, "NOT hundreds of ships", and this small squadron couldn't even be considered a hundredth of the firepower of the Royal Navy in 1814.
10) The only guns which outranged the guns of the fort were the 10 inch mortars and the Congreve rockets. The frigates only moved close enough to fire once, but were rapidly hit by return fire from Fort McHenry and withdrew with the loss of 1 sailor aboard HMS Surprise.
11) the 10 inch mortars used by the bomb ketches were not accurate weapons, at the range of 3.5 nautical miles (7,000 yards) their shot dispersion area was 800 yards (400 yards in every direction from their aiming point). While they are devastating weapons against city-sized targets, their effectiveness against the relatively small fort is doubtful at best. If you've read the actual facts I have given (these are directly from the reports of Major George Armistead (the Commanding Officer of Fort McHenry), Vice Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane (the British commander) and Mr Key's own statements, you can see that most of this video is utter fabrication.
The flag that flew during the bombardment is not the one in the Smithsonian. The Smithsonian flag was raised after the battle was over, replacing the smaller storm flag.

I’m a Canadian, but for some reason I get extremely emotional whenever I hear the American National Anthem. Now that I know the backstory I’ll be all the more so. I guess it’s because the yearning to live free is universal. People from all around the world can relate. The Star Spangled Banner is a beautiful and majestic symbol of that.

I kinda wish that I can say the same... However I come from a family of Native Americans and most of my tribesmen were wiped out by the US Military back then. I don't have hatred nor disgust for what they did, every race and every nation has it's dark side of history, however I wish that it did not have to go the way it did. They had guns, while my people had bows and arrows, obviously you can tell which side was going to prevail a bullet is a lot faster and more ideal than an arrow.
@@shyryTsr2k I mean, I got some Native in me too on my dad's side. He was also military. She (grandmother on my dad's side) was the daughter of the chief. I can't really say I can understand you on this one, from someone with 25%+ native heritage (Cherokee and Seneca).

As an American, I have heard the story many times... but the way the narrator told it was beautiful. Also... as an American I felt it was a proud dutiful reaction to stand and cover my heart during the singing. it's amazing how history can be so compelling.

@@zipperadventures5487 We have lots of perspectives. Military reports from both the fort and the fleet. Other eyewitness accounts from those who were there. It's not just Francis Scott Key's account. The fort is now a museum. They have archives detailing the battle.

I cannot understand, how anyone from anywhere, can fail to support their own nation, people or tribe ... as an extension of supporting your own family and friends.
because not everyone, everywhere, has a reason to support the nation they live in. Indeed, many people in the world have never seen themselves as part of the nation the rest of the world says they are part of.

I was trying to explain how. We like to think that subgroups within a group think of themselves as part of that larger group, but often they do not. especially in situations where they had no say in whether they were going to be a part of that group. How can they not support that group you ask? simply, they don't want to be a part of that group.

I can respect that. The reactors are in India ... they have 22 official languages ... it's complicated. I choose in my heart, to support my support group, as I see that, not because of ideology ... even if they aren't particularly supporting me. I don't find special pleading or narcissism useful.

But contemplating one's belly button about ideal persons or ideal groups ... is worthless. As the daughter of a United States Navy Veteran I was taught to respect the flag, but until I learned the story behind our National anthem, it was to me as it is told here…Something we memorize as children and recite with repetition without thought…When I learned the true meaning …the sacrifice of many at Fort Henry that became the story behind our National anthem, I’ve NEVER been the same…

Visitors to our country cannot understand why we love our flag so much. You can drive down just about any street and see the flag flying from people's homes and businesses. This kind of devotion to a flag is not seen in other countries. Knowing the story behind the National Anthem helps people get a better understanding of why we love our flag so much; because of what it means to us as a nation!

That's probably why they didn't like not being represented in the British parliament. They felt themselves to be part of the Mother country. I live 20 minutes from Fort McHenry. Walking that old fort has such an emotiona feeling to it. All the lives lost for for our freedom. We are reminded of how our lives would be so different had they pulled that down that flag. But our ancestors refused to give up no matter how many died to keep it flying. Later we kicked the crap of of Great Britian and won our freedom for all those who sacrificed to give us liberty. To this day when we hang our flags on our homes they are tilted to honor those who died to perserve it and our freedom.
It hurts that this country is so divided now, but I love it either way, and love you all too
My theory is that the leading cause of division is too much effort to force unity. If more federalism was pushed, less power to the national government, more power to the states, each state could manage their cultural views and policies as their people saw fit. Those that didn't like their state could either speak their beliefs in effort to stay their state's views, or move to a more like minded state. In essence, by letting each state be more divided, the union would not be so strained. Instead the nation tries to force their views on the nation as a whole, driving others to rebel.
If the federal government was focused strictly on its enumerated powers in the constitution, and the ideals of the declaration, leaving all else for the states, treating each person equal from birth, we as a nation would be forever indivisible.

Capital Hill & the White House focused on defense, foreign policy, and dispute resolution and let states decide what and how to teach their students, fund their schools, feed their hungry, fill their coffers, what constitutes murder and how to minimize it, what is socially acceptable public behavior.
The state legislatures answer to their neighbors. Capital Hill only answers to their campaign contributors. Let each state decide what works for their people, let D.C. decide how to protect the states' abilities to make those decisions.

The states should have the majority of power over what happens in their borders, and the administration at federal level can only be concerned with international relations, common defense, interstate squabbles, etc.
The reason for this bombardment was because the fort protected the entrance to the Potomac River. It was all that stood between the British fleet and the sores of Washington DC. The guns of the fort could not reach the British fleet but they would certainly sink it if it tried to pass the fort. As long as the fort stood, the British were stymied.
That’s geographically wrong and historically wildly inaccurate. You’re off by about 90 miles. Fort McHenry is not on the Potomac, and did not protect Washington D.C. In fact, the British had to sail past the mouth of the Potomac as they went deeper into Chesapeake Bay to get to Fort McHenry in the vicinity of Baltimore. Far from being stymied in their attack on Washington, by the time of the Battle of Baltimore the British had already attacked the capital months earlier, conquered the city, and burned the White House and Capitol building.

One of my biggest heroes is an Indian immigrant named Dinesh D’Souza!
He is a brave and patriotic man.
He came to America from India with nothing and now he is a millionaire and he worked for the President Reagan.
I learned so much from him about being American even though he is an immigrant.
Fort McHenry like the USS Constellation in Baltimore Harbor is very haunted. A Ghost Sentry from the war of 1812 is seen at his post at the gates of the Fort often at night very often. The park rangers have learned to call out "Sentry, Post!" to him and he will disappear after that order is given. The order tells Sentries that all is well in the Fort. The USS Constellation located in Baltimore Harbor adjacent to the Fort is haunted by the Original Captain, a Sailor that Captain had executed for sleeping on duty and a Powder Monkey. Powder Monkeys were young boys who's job it was to run gunpowder charges up from the magazines to the waiting gun crews in battle. The Captain has been seen on the quarter deck by many many people including the Naval Officers and Crew on Ships and Submarines tied up next to the ship. In 1955 after these sightings became known to the Navy a quiet investigation was conducted on the ship. A USNR Officer photographed the quarter deck and the Captain is seen walking forward in the photograph. People have been conducted on a tour around the ship by a man in period sailor's clothes. When they stop at the souvenir shop on the way out to commend the Docent for his wonderful tour of the ship they are told that there is no Docent or Tour Guide and they were they only ones on the ship at that time. Military Forts, Ships and Battlefields are some of the most haunted places on Earth. Thank you for the enjoyment that I feel when watching your reactions. I grew up in a small town in Oregon and lived there all my life. The only time I was away from home was when I was drafted into the US Army. I went to Vietnam and received a disability and I live with that. But I love my country and was proud to serve in the Army. I am now 74 and and still love in Oregon, and every time I hear the National Anthem I am moved by it!

I only heard this, in one reference from my great-great-granduncle, Fred Ziebeck. He was seven at the time of the shelling. He said that he was required to tie the flags to the pole. He used everything: Binder twine, floss, strips of cloth taken from ladies dresses, etc. I never got him to talk again, even when he was drunk.

However, as soon as they left, India fell apart, resulting in the unnecessary deaths of several million people. It is lucky for India, that Britain, due to Churchill, stood up to Hitler and fascism, and fought in a World War against him. The British could have done a peace deal, with Hitler. If that had been the case, Britain would have had to hold onto India, and the rest of it's Empire, at any cost. To compete on equal terms with Nazi Germany, and not to be seen as a junior partner. That would have stalled any chance of Indian independence, possibly for many decades, if at all. So it's fortunate that India supported Britain in defeating the Axis powers in WWII.

This took place in 1814. The USA was formally recognized as a sovereign and independent country in 1783 by Britain. The states were not called colonies in 1814. The war was fought over Britain's practice of seizing American ships and impressing its crews into the Royal Navy.
Not the only thing wrong in this video. Most of it is wrong.
Colonies refers to American Colonies not British Colonies. People do not change their language instantly. We do it quicker today with mass communications. But even by 1814 America was United States on paper, but not totally in language or culture.

England had recognized the US as a sovereign nation for 31 years prior to the battle, and the return of the US to British rule was never a goal of the English. The flag flown had 15 stars and 15 stripes (the only official flag of the US to have more than 13 stripes) therefore, it is improper to call them "colonies". The video references a "vicious and long war" implying that this was part of the Revolutionary War and the use of the term colonies reinforces that impression. By comparison, the 1815 battle of Waterloo alone accounts for around 10 times as many "killed in action" as the entire 2 years of the War of 1812. (Including the battle of New Orleans which occurred after the war had officially ended)

Although it was an actual event and an important part of American history, there is a reason it's called "as you've never heard it" because it didn't happen that way. It was the war of 1812, we were the United States not colonies, It's fort McHenry not fort Henry, the flag was not targeted nor was the flag pole hit, only three men and one woman were killed, Key was negotiating the release of a single prisoner who was a friend, not on behalf of the government, there was no reporting to colonial prisoners, there is no record on either side of a conversation ever taking place between Key and the British admiral, there were only nineteen or twenty British ships not the entire battle fleet dotting the horizon. George Washington did not say "what sets the American Christian apart from all other people in the world is that he'll die on his feet before he'll live on his knees" there is no known quote in any of his writings that reflect this sentiment.
