I saw Macy Gray in concert at Meadow Brook Amphitheatre in Michigan a few years ago. There is covered seating area there and then lawn seating in back. Once the warm up finished and Macy was a few songs into her set, it was apparent that the covered seating was only half full. I'm saying not a just a few empty seats here and there. I mean the entire back half of the covered seats had NO PEOPLE IN THE SEATS. Now I've been on the lawn before for other shows and enjoyed myself. But those had a pavilion full of people so the energy from the performance could carry through them to the lawn. So naturally, people want to move in and get closer to the music. Macy even invites everyone to come get closer, join the fun and dance along with her. But "security" refuses to let people into the pavilion area without the proper wristband. Now the energy of the live music is dying in that large swath of empty chairs. And when nobody 'accepts' her invitation to come on in and join the party, now Macy seems offended. If I could see her thought bubble over her head, it would have said 'Here I am playing my heart out for you and inviting people in, and all I get is a bunch of rich white folks who just want to sit on their blankets and eat cheese and crackers and chit chat while some tunes are playing in the background.' If the goal of "security" that night was to take would could have been a beautiful evening of music, love, and harmony and instead turn it into an evening of misunderstanding, frustration, and dissonance, then the crack staff at Meadow Brook are the best I've ever seen.
Sorry to hear. I saw similar at a RAINY Stevie Nick's concert @1989. Macy's played a lot of these venues for 25+ years///so she knows...her "people" know how to get it done. Wecan't blamce security....they are on the bottom of that totem pole.
