I’m guessing that they originally planned on rain deer needing to go to a shelter during the rain and then scraped it but left the code that dose that in. Or just part of how the game registers having NPCs hibernate* in a shelter.
There's a lot of things that can realistically end up in your shelter, and it's easier to make a system that recognises all objects in a shelter and displays their icons (icons that every object already has because of arena), than to think of everything in that list, account for any dumb situation Rain World can generate and any ridiculous plan a player might come up with to put something weird in a shelter, and code all that in manually and individually. And it makes modding easier (I assume), whether that was a consideration or a side effect.

I’m not a programmer and this is just my guess, but I believe once the spear pierces the bat, the spear enters a state where whatever entity the spear has hit will enter the room with you as to keep the batfly to be left behind. But because you can spear multiple batflies the program accounts for multiple entities, and also because the programmers probably just forgot to exclude entities that are not the batflies, any entity you hit with the spear in that state will be teleported to the room you are in.
I saw a more in-depth description of how the batfly spear works and it makes a lot of sense (although it’s kind of hard to explain). Basically, once a bat is stuck on the spear and you hit the batfly on that spear with the empty spear, the game now considers the batfly being stuck to *both* spears (even though visibly it’s only on one). Now the game obviously wants to keep track of this information, that being you have a batfly on two spears and it wants that to stay consistent between rooms, but since it’s technically the same batfly and not two individual batflies, whatever the ‘clean’ spear hits, the game now attaches the ‘is part of slugcat therefore go through doors with them’ flag to the creature. And thus, deer, guardians, miros birds, etc. follow you through doors because the game desperately wants to keep what it considers the same batfly with you and doesn’t account for whatever else is stuck to that ‘empty’ spear.
i can just imagine you crying while i watch this lmao. (I cried about three times and then finished the game with over 50 hours because i was stupid and didn't know where to go.)
It really wasn't that fun, it was one of the most repetitive things I've ever done. Dying because I got flung into a wall because of the deer gets old fast, much less for 8 hours! Had to just put on an audiobook in the background.
