Ah this was the time when it was recorded in an old RAF hanger at Newton, Nottinghamshire. I was the local pistoe and had the pleasure one Saturday morning, walking into the hanger and these machines were all there lined up. I went straight over to Hypnodisc and patted her and gave her a kiss for good luck. Happy days.
@@petermckiernan5822 I remember driving through a road junction near East Bridgford and seeing some temporary road signs to direct people to Robot Wars many years ago. Wish I could have watched though would have needed ear plugs to protect from all the screaming kids :)
The revamped show of series’s 8-10 was a mere shadow of itself unfortunately, all the charm had been lost from the show. Also this video is a great example of the hypnodisc team being very sporting, not going in and destroying machinery one the opposing are clearly immobile, and always gracious in defeat
the US robot wars then was hosted by Mick Foley and in the USA had Battlebots as the recent UK robot wars was cancelled but the rebooted Battlebots came on but as of 2020 the battlebots events were cancelled due to the Covid-19 Coronavirus outbreak.
I have to say that although I like the seasons that Craig Charles did the original couple of seasons with Jeromy Clarkson were so much better. They had everything races, obstacle courses etc was more about all round skill rather than just brut force and general fightings that the later seasons turned into.
I remember seeing hypnodisk just tearing other bots to pieces, this was definitely the machine the made all current and future roboteers rethink about how they made their robots, very entertaining
@Izumi Culture Spinners are widely used for a reason. They can store a very large weapon payload when compared to any other type of legal weapon, so its kind of difficult to justify using any other variety of weapon without major design concessions to make it competitive.
The difference between then and now in performance terms is just a chasm. I can remember reeling at the raw power of hypno disc at 12 years old and now it looks cute
I lived in Banbury for work for a few years, I had no idea the Hypno-Disk team were from there (everybody local were proud that Gordon Ramsay went school there), I wish I bumped into them, it would have been nice to get them a pint or two for all the entertainment they gave me whilst I was growing up.
@@giansideros I met them. Down to earth guys. Very polite and willing to talk to everyone. Was a great experience to see hypnodisc spinning up right in front of me :)
They should've honestly made a reboot of this series but a no holds barred. You are able to make your robot however you want. No one would be by the arena, so safety wouldn't be an issue. Just seeing these more intense and crazy matches would be amazing.
@@johnhawkins5314 Carbide wasn't even the most powerful spinner in the reboot, it was just the most reliable. And it seemed more powerful than it was because of the fact that heavyweight spinners had been banned from competition in the UK for about a decade beforehand, due to an arena breech incident at an event, so people hadn't kept up with how to armour against a modern one.
It's also the one that de-hypes the whole battle sport. "It's just an rc car". "Where are the weapons". ""Is it going to do anything or just drive in circles?".
@@mehashisee ngl it's obviously effective but they're robots, why use cheap easy tactics to win when you can have fun with actually developing a defendable bot
Thank God the BBC decided to cancel this and provide us with "Little Mix - The Search" and countless dancing programmes instead. Best £160 I've ever spent. Thanks BBC. Tossers.
The Hypnodisc team always lacked the killer instinct in the ring. They cared about the expensive components in opponents robots and kept damage to a minimal. Caught them out at least once when they suddenly lost power and the opponents regained theirs leaving them the last moving.
Worth noting that unlike more modern flywheel-type weapons, Hypno-Disc's weapon was directly driven from a drive motor instead of off a reduction gear or pulley belt/chain. This meant that the shock of heavier hits would recoil much more severely through the internals.
I seem to recall they said somewhere that these robots are very expensive to build and they didn't like ruining all the parts used to make their opponents bot once it was immobalized.
You can tell they're hesitant to do excessive damage once everyone else stops moving. They're happy to take the countout, and rightly so. I thought it was also out of empathy for the opposing team, but that's speculation.
Hypno-Disc series 6 was the last time it fought. but other more powerful spinners superceeded it like Carbide/Cobalt, and Tombstone and Son of Whyachi of Battlebots all 3 spinners have heavier spinners greater than Hypno-disc and rotated twice as fast as more knetic energy is stored to do damage. Hypno-Disc was the first bot permitted in the UK with the use of a spinning flywheel weights 20kg carbide over that battlebots Tombstone 75 lbs. as Hypno-disc's flywheel then is a well proven design spun under 1,000 RPM. first powered by a single Bosch GPA 750 watt motor in series 3 and 4 and two 750 watt motors for Extreme. then a more powerful Lemco lynch type motor for series 5 and series 6 till its final televised battle.
To think that Jaime Hyneman's Blendo ended up retired (AKA banned) from Battlebots, then years later bots like Tombstone are literally throwing others around the arena like kicking a ball.
Nostalgic times right here, there weren’t really big damaging bots when this show started, so hypnodisk was the big show stealer when he showed up, like Tombstone was in the Battlebots series when he showed up. I must say the Battlebots series has much better bots with a lot more damage, but thats all learning and improving on these old show bots, these robot wars bots where like a beta version of what we have now
I know that Ian Watts (father and captain of Bigger Brother) has gone on to focus on swarmbot teams, notably with The Swarm in the Robot Wars reboot and The Four Horsemen in the revived BattleBots show
I think the Granny team entered entirely for the fun of it without intending to win, and I don't think it's a coincidence they put Sgt Bash with his flame-thrower in with her.
I think everyone appreciates the teams that participate for the spectacle rather than purely to win. Granny's revenge was hilarious (and horrifying!) I remember Diotor being another one, they kept putting fur on their machine so it would go on fire 😄
Interesting using the cloth in the first battle to snag other weapons. I had that idea but using the kevlar your find in chainsaw proof trousers, i think if you covered a robot in that it might jam up the spinners

The granny doll on fire and a cooker dropped on it looked absolutely demented. I love it.

Robot wars wouldn’t be what it is today without the specific influence of hypnodisk, look at how many robots use spinners today👍
