Most of this was House bots being tricked into the Pit or flipped by sometimes two or three bots at a time. And then there's Razer turning Matilda into scrap and bending Shunt's bulldozer blade out of shape 'on its own'. There's never been that kind of power and aggression in a competitor before or since. And I hope for Matilda's sake that there will never be another one.
I dunno... The two house robots being flipped over by Apollo (1:25) happened in the *same fight*. That's pretty impressive too, especially since those house robots are twice the mass of what they were previous seasons.
It always surprised me the seeming lack of communication and experience behind the drivers of the house robots, they should have had radio mics and stuff to talk to each other. Sir Killalot just watches it happen.
The Razer team was told to do that to Matilda for entertainment purposes as they wanted a redesign, really sucks to think that some of the best episodes were scripted
According to the fandom page, though I don't know where the information came from, they were originally going to replace Matilda's chainsaw tail with a flywheel for the Fourth Wars but construction on Refbot took up their time most likely due to 2 Refbots needed. The flywheel was a great weapon. I would say it was the fastest destructive weapon on any House Robot seeing how it shreds of the armor of the competitors back then.
100 kilo robot flipping around 600 kilos…quite a feat. Maybe it’s just because I had the DVD of the last heat before the semi finals in series 7, but firestorm has always been one of my favourites. Plus I didn’t realise just how many feats this bot has under its belt
Because we saw many other flip bot that can also flip the house robot, yet we have never seen anything come close to Razor destroying Matilda or bending Shunt wedge.
@@markconstance186 worth mentioning too back in series 2, all the other robots had trouble moving house robots. Razer however came head to head with shunt in the gauntlet and just continued to push it back to the finish line with ease.
I always thought once Razer started becoming outclassed by newer designed robots that he it could have easily became a house robot itself. A simple upsize and a little more power and it could happily guard the floor :)
As a kid the idea of challengers taking on house robots sounded awesome to me because I would see the house robots as these great, scary bots that were the be all and end all. No one dared fight back against them as they were the cream of the crop fighters. So to see challengers not only fight other challengers but also house robots and even win against them blew my mind x3. It was even funnier and awesome to see challengers temporarily make alliances and gang up on house robots. This was a program like no other.
Yeah, the House Robots were like the gods of the arena, who would sometimes get involved but on a different power level to the challengers. The idea of fighting them is like challenging the gods themselves. For Razor to murder two of them was legendary.
tbf the house robots did not have to follow weight classes and were beating on smaller opposition. the psycho hammer or killalot claw weighed as much as the competitors. would've been interesting to see them fight each other.
OH absolutely, a magical moment to see the competitors lay waste on the house robots. I remember when I was a kid, I would literally scream laugh at the TV when I saw a moment like that. The firefighters claw on Killalot was able to crush through pretty much any competitor in the early series.
Never been a big fan of Razer, but the more I rewatch its destructive performances, the more I cannot not recognize its merit. This robot and Hypnodisc were really ahead of their league in terms of destructiveness, making the HR look as jokes in comparison. Many pincers and many spinners followed their examples but none got even this close ( maybe only Carbide) to destroy opponents as they did. On the other end, flippers like Chaos 2, Firestorm and Apollo were House Robot natural killers on their own way, especially Firestorm and Apollo really put their mark on almost each House Robot they encountered (Apollo even mimicked the famous Firestorm's on Psycho in a spiritual tribute). Also, it's funny how the house robots had never a chance to avenge on Firestorm, Apollo and Razer, as Firestorm always lost in safe ways (pit or out of the arena) and the other 2 never lost for real. On the contrary, Hypnodisc and Chaos 2 were punished more than once by the House Robots.
What about the time Razer took on Killalot during, I think it was the Series 4 Pinball Warrior challenge. I think they clamped on to his lance and caused a leak of hydraulic fluid all over the floor. I think another time they went for his rear as well

Being able to flip a robot weighing near enough 350kg is just amazing! I just wondered how on earth they got Killalot out of the pit? They must have had to bring in a forklift truck or something. 🤣🤣🤣
It's always fun to watch the house robots get wrecked XP I especially love the one with Firestorm and the other competitors calling a temporary truce just to gang up on the house robots.
Razor the perfect example of power creep in RW. Once the god, but I remember them returning for the reboot of the UK show and doing absolutely nothing. Same thing happened to Hypnodisc in the original series when armour got stronger and Hypno kept breaking down.
I mean there's power creep, but then there's also *15 years* of innovation. A bot from 1999-2003 against bots from 2016-2018 just doesn't compare at all, not to mention that the new series had 10% extra weight limit or something compared to the old show. For reference, in the early 2000's flip-phones were just hitting store shelves as the pinnacle of personal phones. in 2016, a cheap phone has more computing power than PCs of that time.
@@Kerberus262 great points. It was just sad to see as an old school RW fan. I'm surprised that the bot wasn't seriously beefed-up or even completely replaced for the new era. Also, different weapon types seem to rule different eras and stupidly powerful flippers in new RW made crushers and other older weapons not as viable.
@@richardm5664 Yup, different tech shifts the meta. Back in the day, the strongest weapon you could get were a Co2 powered hinged plank or hydraulic-powered sharpened metal. Compare that to now when motors are small/powerful enough to get spinners and such to valuable speeds in a second or two. As for Razer, them and a few others were specifically asked to take part to seed interest in the reboot. They knew those bots had lots of fans so if Razer takes part all of them are gonna watch and get interested in the reboot. In many cases, they re-used the bot they had, and Razer specifically played it safe so it wouldn't get absolutely destroyed.

Sgt Bash, Growler, Psycho didn't get revamps).

Never forget that it was the late, great Rex Garrod who effectively pioneered competition against the House Robots. Both Recyclopse and Cassius were able to flip Matilda fairly regularly. While the Trials round was still going though Series 1 and 2, there were plenty of other moments where the House Robots were felled by the competitors. Roadblock also beat Shunt in its Series 1 Sumo trial, Spin Doctor famously de-tusked Matilda in its Series 2 King Of The Castle trial, Chaos pitted Dead Metal in its Series 2 Tug Of War trial, the list likely goes on but those are the three I remember
I still vividly remember watching the Robot Wars show on Syfy (I think that's the channel it was on) and witnessing Firestorm flipping Mr. Psycho! That was the craziest thing I had witnessed up until that point! Mr. Psycho during this time had a reputation for being the current top House Robot and for humiliating a bunch of the competition. It was a spectacle seeing him flipped, but also watching his big hammer just demolish some robots - namely that one with the British colors and mannequin head lol
I remember watching it on TechTV. I certainly wanted to see if it could be done, especially because of how heavy Mr. Psycho was. It took three people to right him!
I don’t care about the newer house robots but the original old guard of Matilda, Shunt, Dead Metal, Sir Killalot and Sgt Bash all has fractious relationships with certain competitor robots but it was always Bash who took the most abuse.
Nothing comes close to the original robot wars. Spinner bots didn't dominate so all designs had a chance. You had the most iconic robots, house robots were a thing, the arena, the lighting, the music, craig charles, and you could flip robots out of the arena. The re-launch just ruined so much of that. Battlebots isn't great either.

That was the craziest thing I had witnessed up until that point! Mr. Psycho during this time had a reputation for being the current top House Robot and for humiliating a bunch of the competition. It was a spectacle seeing him flipped, but also watching his big hammer just demolish some robots - namely that one with the British colors and mannequin head lol
I remember watching it on TechTV. I certainly wanted to see if it could be done, especially because of how heavy Mr. Psycho was. It took three people to right him!

I don’t care about the newer house robots but the original old guard of Matilda, Shunt, Dead Metal, Sir Killalot and Sgt Bash all has fractious relationships with certain competitor robots but it was always Bash who took the most abuse.

Nothing comes close to the original robot wars. Spinner bots didn't dominate so all designs had a chance. You had the most iconic robots, house robots were a thing, the arena, the lighting, the music, craig charles, and you could flip robots out of the arena. The re-launch just ruined so much of that. Battlebots isn't great either.
