      They got a small forged hook so they stick in the wood, so as long as the cut is deep enough, in theory the heavier you are, the better it will hold since it gets stuck deeper in the wood.

      White pine or quaking aspen. If you actually used those Tui competition axes on soft woods like spruce even, it would chip very quickly because it's only designed to chop through aspen, white pine etc. They also get dull very quickly regardless of the steel because of the low sharpening angle.

    Only 2 boards high? Is that soft wood? Check out the Australian titles if you want to see how its done.

    • @MongrelShark
      @MongrelShark 10 років тому

      I dont think there is any wood that is as hard as Australian hard wood. We call stuff like Oak medium wood here. Ironbark gets its name from the sound it makes when you hit it with an axe, and the bark is softer than the wood. Mulga wood makes great break pads in cars, lasts for years, if you can find someone that can carve up a set. We dont just break axe handles. I've shattered or twisted a few heads in my time too. Even a good Plumb head can shatter if not sharp enough. An Oragon or Sthill Chainsaw chain will go blunt before my chainsaw uses a tank of fuel cutting dry bull oak or she oak.... Yet it will cut Regular Oak (European acorn variety) for 20+ tanks of fuel, and last for months on pine.

    • @MongrelShark
      @MongrelShark 10 років тому

      I dont have a competition axe, they are huge! the average axe at hardware store is 2kg, the competition versions are 5kg and made from top grade tempered steel. They have much more blade length 200mm or so, compared to around 150mm for a regular axe. With the comp versions being much thicker all over. blade sharpening angel is also a lot flatter (between 30 & 45 deg) so they dont get jammed, compared to a softwood axe (20-25 deg). Good hardwood axe's have a bulbous bit just behind the cutting edge, then slim a bit before widening to accept the handle. Which helps prevent jamming, and breakage.

    • @MongrelShark
      @MongrelShark 10 років тому

      Here you can see a woman's comp axe.
      www.smh.com.au/nsw/women-with-an-axe-to-swing-get-in-for-their-title-chops-20130324-2go1p.html
      Probably 2.5 - 3kg
      Note the Woman broke three axes on one knotted log if you read the article.
      This shows a slender softwood head (left), compared to a slightly bulbous medium wood axe (right). A Hard wood axe would be a bit thicker again just back from the edge. lh3.googleusercontent.com/_QnIsgflDDLM/TQjnOa4BHtI/AAAAAAAAA5U/6UYHiwiLBpU/s800/018.JPG
      If the Woman above had the second or third axe down in this pic, The mens axe would be the big one. i45.tinypic.com/124k9ip.jpg
      Although I think in reality the woman had an axe bigger than all these. the big one looks like a 2kg.

    • @MongrelShark
      @MongrelShark 10 років тому

      Here is David Foster 26 times Australian champ. With one of his axe's media2.apnonline.com.au/img/media/images/2013/05/16/25-1728375-lis160612primex01_fct1021x628x3x29_t460.jpg
      He can get through a 350mm hardwood round in 8-10 seconds, with 12 chops or so. Saw him at the Melbourne Show once. Was amazing.
      Here he is with his big 5kg axe www.heraldsun.com.au/news/gallery-e6frf7jo-1111120508921?page=6
      Here he is with regular people for scale. www.abc.net.au/elections/tas/2006/img/20060317_axman.jpg Foster would be 6'6" to 6'8" tall. Maybe 25-30 stone. When not chopping wood, he likes to drink beer.
      This ones an action shot about 4 chops into a comp. images.smh.com.au/2011/09/09/2614097/art-Foster-420x0.jpg Note the size of the "woodchips" flying away.
