Morbid fact about that graveyard: the cliffs are a bit crumbly in that area of coast, and there's been a few occasions after heavy rain has caused a bit of subsidence, that grave contents near the edge of the graveyard have worked themselves out and dropped into the back gardens of the houses down below. Hello Mr 200 Year Old Fisherman, pleased to meet ya!,
"Dracula runs up the 199 steps leading to the Abbey after his ship is wrecked on Tate Hill Sands in the Form of a Dog." How Cool to actually be there! Surreal!!
That water filled grave, was the very one I laid in years ago joking about with my Dad. Whitby has always been my soul home. I’m currently trying to move there. A promise I made to myself when I was 18. I’m now 49. Life happens. I can’t wait to see the glee in the eyes of both of you, when you see her at night. If you can. Take the chance while others sleep. While the pubs are closed. That’s when the real spirits come out. 👍👏👏❤️❤️❤️
Cant believe you guys are in Whitby!!!! Love the place. The only town in England where you can walk around dressed as Dracula or Freddy anytime of the year, and no one looks at you funny.
If you're going to go this far into Dracula, don't ignore the Romanian portion of the tale. There's the tourist Dracula's Castle (Bran Castle) but there's also the castle ruins where Vlad the impaler actually lived. If you think 199 steps is difficult to climb, try the 1500 that it will take you to get to the real Dracula's Castle. It's called Cetatea Poenari. That was Vlad the Impaler's actual castle. It's a bitch to get up to but it's well worth it. I've been there three times. I think it's currently under renovation but it's well worth the effort. They don't do a good job of updating the current accessibility so you would have to call the hotel that's closest to it to find whether or not it's accessible at the moment.
Don't you know seagulls always say 'mine! mine!'. I heard a rumour say that the very first inspiration for Dracula that Bram Stoker had was when he saw the devils eyes in the Abbey, as the sun sets from a certain angle in summer, as it vanishes behind the abbey it shines through a particular window frame making it look like a pair of glaring red eyes.
My former home, I was back in Whitby only a few days ago, would have been wild to bump into you guys! Hope you enjoyed town. There's nowhere else like it!
I just interviewed Dacre Stoker on my channel and it’s really inspired me to take the 3 hour journey and check out Whitby for myself. This just adds to it! Great work guys!
It's wonderful visiting places that inspired novels. Walking through the streets, pointing out certain details (where the black dog ran between the houses and then finally to the steps), even though it never happened...it did...in all of our minds when reading the book. The book literally comes alive when visiting there. Truly amazing.

Whitby is our go to place at least twice a year. It can be busy at times but it's one of those places you never get bored of seeing. Also, the Whitby Goth weekend(s) are just brilliant 🦇
Not sure if anyone else has mentioned but St Mary's churchyard was also used in the music video for Simply Red's song Holding back the years. Bit of useless information there. I have walked up and down those steps a few times. Great video guys 👍🏻
I love everything about Dracula! I was impressed with that 199 Steps and that stoned made church. You done another great job Michael. That scene with the horses was nice! I love horses. Thank you so much, it's all beautiful!

Thank you for this video!🙏🏻 I’ve been wanting to see that for years. It’s unbelievable that they were able to construct structures like that hundreds of years ago with no trucks, cranes or even the tools we have today..
🩸🧛🏻🧛🏻♀️🧛🏻♂️❤️ That view of the town is magnificent! That church is glorious my friends. The graveyard is perfection.🪦 I am freakin out already and the video isn’t even finished! 😍🥰 ✨
I am so glad you make the trip to Whitby.. The place is magical. My wife used to live there for a while and actually was a "scare actor" in the Bram Stoker's Dracula Experience for a while.. Once a year in the 1990s the Experience would hold a masked ball to celebrate all things vampiric, ect.. My old band (13 Candles) was pretty much the house band and played every ball they held. I have amazing memories from those times. Aweome video and thanks for sharing with us.
Great video. I live in Whitby and have 3 of the Varna tea boxes in my home from the Dracula display at the Abbey. Thanks for visiting our lovely town ❤
Thank you both for visiting and showing the north east of England. It’s a very special place with very special people. The electric light bulb first illuminated here, Christianity landed here, the Steam train first rolled here. I could go on, but suffice to say, it’s a special place. ❤
I'm SO happy you visited Whitby. I didn't think you wouldn't. I've been visiting here for over 40 years & never tire of this beautiful, historic, quaint, magical, ghoulish fishing village. 🩶🦇🩶 You'd love the Goth Festivals & they've done Krampus events too. The village is packed & heaving with Goths on those days but the atmosphere & costumes are spectacular! Fabulous video Mr & Mrs Grimm. As always. XX
My 5th great grandfather made those railings on the 199 steps back in the day! I was in Whitby over Halloween, where they light up the abbey and do Dracula plays at the top. Trying to get back down them in the dark is deadly 💀 So glad you made it here!
I am not being funny but do you know how many people have said their 200th great grandfather did them steps or railings. Sir. Stop feeding generational bullshit. Everybody’s 5th great grandfather built them railings. Prove me wrong
Is it just me or does anyone else suspect that the hosts can corroborate avi's ancestral claims because they were there when the railings were installed.
@@LindaCypressiMy great great great grandfather helped too. He was one of many local men who pitched in. Wonderful men one and all. And, no, I don’t need to prove it to you. Sorry.
Pam, I am 70 and they have taken me around the world. I love these guys more than I can tell you. I, too, am disabled and these guys have literally taken my days from mundane and dreary to having something to look forward to. Love you, Michael and Jessica, and really enjoyed this adventure. Thank you for taking me along I love Dracula and have read all the books I could get my hands on, no matter who put the pen to paper. This just made it all the more real. Take care of yourselves and travel safely.
Hi both, so glad you managed to visit Whitby. Me and my husband got married in St Mary's and had our wedding photos in the Abbey, 24 years ago on Dec 6th!
Seeing Michael become friends with Dracula the horse was the most wholesome and heart warming thing I've seen today. So precious!!! Thank you for sharing that with us!
I do love how they make that 199 steps seem like it will literally be your life’s end! I do not think I’ve ever heard of a coffin bench! That is the coolest omg! Fits right in with the home of Dracula! This place definitely going on my bucket list, my list is so long holy heckens! The views of Witby in whole is so beautiful! That church is breathtaking too! I got goosebumps as soon as you said you did! Ahhh the chills! Can almost feel Dracula behind you! Do you and Baby Ghoul wanna adopt the beautiful horse now! He does love the camera! Love all the pets! Lil Grim Dracula! Amazing video yet again besties!!! Did it feel weird being on a filming set as you aren’t the only ones filming lol ! 😂❤️👻🎃🦇💚🦇🦉🐦⬛🧛🏻♂️
All around…it was an amazing experience and if you look closely on the film set…the camera guy on the far right is a huge huge huge fan of Grimm Life. You can see him waving with excitement.
@@grimmlifecollective I did notice that! So so incredible to be able to be on these adventures with you guys! Too bad you couldn’t continue filming I wonder if they’d let you be in the movie! Lol!
Oh wow. I live so close to Whitby, it's great knowing you guy's are seeing it - and at the perfect time of year when it's bleak and cold. I hope it gave you the same vibe climbing the steps as it did me years ago. You know there's a Vampire Convention once a year there don't you? Goth, Steampunk combo celebrating all things Gothic. It is quite something to experience.
Enjoyed your trip around Whitby, it does have a very gothic feel to it. It is quite charming and creepy at the same time, Dracula is fabulous novel and you can see where the inspiration came from.
So happy to see you both exploring beautiful Whitby! My husband and I fell in love in Whitby 15 years ago and we'll be spending Christmas there this year. 🥰
You and Jessica are so awesome! Yall are so sweet and humble that I don't think y'all realize y'all are celebrities in your own right! And that's so sweet. Blessings ❤
Wondering if you also had a chance to visit Slains Castle while you were in Aberdeen? Also rumoured to be an inspiration for Dracula. It's a beautiful and spooky cliff top ruin.
In the dark depths of the darkest darkness there dwells a dank deadly dame and dude doing darkly dealings. That's how my fantasy horror fiction will start😮
One of my favourite videos you've done, guys! You couldn't have picked a better day to visit. The ship and black dogs appearing in the background whilst you talked about the Dracula hound departing from the Demeter was perfect. The filming crew around the church added an extra layer of excitement. Those beautiful friendly horses welcoming you was so sweet and interjected a bit of lightheartedness amongst the dark, gothic nature of your surroundings - the fact they were scratching their bums was so funny and of course, they were black, in keeping with the gothic theme. The coffin benches couldn't have been a more ideal tidbit of trivia to accompany GrimmLifeCollective as you ascended the stairs to the church and Abbey. The rather ominous but also tragic Saxon baby coffin. The gorgeous personalised gifts you got from the souvenir shop. And so much more. Thankyou for filming such an in depth tour of one of the greatest horror locations in the world. I have loved your tour of our UK shores and sincerely hope this isn't your last time filming here 😊
Not sure what kind of camera or video camera you use but that is some really nice footage. You guys do a really Amazing job of narrating the moment so captivating I'm sure everyone watching wishes they were there also. Truly amazing video! Wow
We are great fans of Whitby (not necessarily because of Dracula for us) and we are so glad you enjoyed your visit. It has special memories for me as my grandmother loved the place. We always visit when we head the North Yorkshire Moors Railway nearby. We were there back on the 21st of October so, didn't miss you folks by much. Great video!
Wow, Whitby is spookily beautiful, you can see why it was so inspirational, I love that it appears to be basically the same as it’s always been, looks like you are walking through a movie, brilliantly captured too, thank you guys and Happy Halloween to you both 🧛♀️🧛♀️🧛♂️❤
So glad you loved Whitby, it is the best of England. I have been going there since I was born. I hope you saw it at night, all lit up it is beautiful. I hope you go back some day and really take it all in, go for the goth weekend, you shall absolutely love it! Great vlog by the way, you made us proud in Yorkshire!
So glad you have visited some of the most iconic places while you have been in the UK. We have the most amazing history and Whitby is just one of those places that has an amazing history. I was in Whitby just a couple of years ago and going into St Mary’s church is like going back in time. Thank you for visiting 🇬🇧 hope to meet you both one day.safe trip home to the US. 💙🧛🏻♂️♥️
Awww, I'm so happy that you guys managed to go to Whitby. It looks absolutely beautiful. Always looking forward to your videos! And the music that was playing in the Church was probably Poor Clare Sisters of Arundel. They released a whole album during the pandemic. The song is called "Veni Creator Spiritus". A latin hymn from the 9th Century by Rabanus Maurus.
Probably one of my most favorite videos from you guys, and generally I enjoy all of your videos. But this one really has a certain charm to it. Just oozing with gothic romanticism and the weather really sets the stage too. Very, very cool.
Omg! This is absolutely amazing & beautiful. It's like you can imagine yourself being back in that era to take in as if to feel Dracula's presence around you. Thanks for sharing this! 😊
My gosh I can't imagine what it's like to see all you two have seen in person there. I'm living my life through you two right now lol. Thank you so much.
Its great how appreciative and respectful you both are for all the places you visit!! Great video... Love your videos in general.. Alternative history... Love it!!
I've watched so many of your videos, but this one takes the cake. I am a huge Dracula fan, and watching this gave me all of the good kind of goosebumps. Loved every minute of it 🖤🩶
I love that you are seeing the world. My life has always had Dracula in so many important times that life without him would just be empty, Happy Halloween!
We got absolutely loads of these all over the country in 🇬🇧 UK. you haven’t seen anything it gets better if you really like this kind of thing. Glad you both enjoyed yourselves. 🇬🇧🥳
Cool to see your excitement for visiting. We love Whitby and visit almost every year as we live in Yorkshire. It’s great but when you see it so often you sort of just see it as a lovely local spot and something like this spurs you to remember why it’s actually so cool.
It's hard to imagine that such amazing places like this exist. Truly a beautiful place. Thank you to both of you again for metaphorically stuffing me in your luggage and bringing me along!
What a difference a season makes. We were in Whitby doing the 199 steps and the abbey in July and the town was jam packed with tourists. You definitely picked the right time to go. If you want a huge abbey, visit Rievaulx Abbey near Castle Howard. That place will blow your mind for sure. Awesome video as always, loving your work.
You paid perfect homage to what is my favourite place in England. It was also the place I proposed to my wife, during the Whitby Goth Weekend. You guys are amazing!
How incredibly cool! You read my mind! My sister and I have been talking about Bram Stokers Dracula and wondering if you guys had done a video! It is absolutely Beautiful! I love all your videos. I came across your channel a couple months ago when your Sleepy Hollow video came up in my feed. Totally blown away!
Those have to be the same steps in the BBC version of Dracula 1977 when I was a kid. A great miniseries. Thank you so much for the opportunity to see this.

I agree, i'm from North Yorkshire the home town of Captain Cook👍
So glad you have visited some of the most iconic places while you have been in the UK. We have the most amazing history and Whitby is just one of those places that has an amazing history. I was in Whitby just a couple of years ago and going into St Mary’s church is like going back in time. Thank you for visiting 🇬🇧 hope to meet you both one day.safe trip home to the US. 💙🧛🏻♂️♥️
So happy you visited Whitby. I go twice a year and visit all the places you did and happy you got to experience such a special place. Best video yet.
Thank you so much for your traveling..... I love the history that you share....
That place is so majestic man.Awesome!😃
I'm so jealous. I would love to go to Whitby and see everything. Dracula is one of my favorite novels. Great video, you two!
As Jerry Seinfeld would say, “199 steps!? Why not 200? Were you just too lazy to add the last one?”
One of your best filming's to date. I love the vast history of England, how could you not. Good one guys...
Loved every minute of it 🖤🩶
I got to visit Whitby once! So cool! I didn’t get to go up to the Abbey, but I saw it from afar and it was gorgeous 😍
I so enjoyed this video. The views were breathtaking. Thank you! 🖤🦇🦇
We concur…we still talk about our time there.
I love that you are seeing the world. My life has always had Dracula in so many important times that life without him would just be empty,
Happy Halloween!
We got absolutely loads of these all over the country in 🇬🇧 UK. you haven’t seen anything it gets better if you really like this kind of thing. Glad you both enjoyed yourselves. 🇬🇧🥳
Rievaulx Abbey is amazing
I love your UK adventures! What a great video, you made Bram Stoker's legacy come to life! Its such fun watching you two!
I've always wanted to see Whitby because of Dracula and this video wet my fangs considerably!
AMAZINGLY beautiful! Not what you call "wheelchair accessible", so I will have to live vicariously through your vids :)
You can get to the church and Abbey from road at the top, so it is accessible that way!
I came here to say exactly the same 🏴
@@rachaelghostcat8584 oooh nice!! ROAD TRIP! :)
@rachaelghostcat8584 that's good to know!. Ive not been up there for years and my bad knee couldn't cope with those steps these days.
Wow… Whitby is so beautiful. It is on my bucket list of places I want to visit in the future.
Cool to see your excitement for visiting. We love Whitby and visit almost every year as we live in Yorkshire. It’s great but when you see it so often you sort of just see it as a lovely local spot and something like this spurs you to remember why it’s actually so cool.
Best one yet. So glad you’ve been to Whitby. Love all your films but this holds a special place in our families hearts. X
It's hard to imagine that such amazing places like this exist. Truly a beautiful place. Thank you to both of you again for metaphorically stuffing me in your luggage and bringing me along!
i have read bram stoker's dracula many times but this video and especially the ruins inspired me to go read it again- thankyou!
With your tour of the U.K. you’ve done wonders for the various tourist boards up and down the U.K.
You guys are so lucky!! Now I wanna see it so bad I’m giddy lol. Whitby is now on my bucket list!!!❤
