You're right. I wouldn't say he's funny, and yet he's quite amusing. Unfortunately he appears not to grasp the distinction between amusing and funny and thus tends to overegg the pudding a bit. Luckily it all seems to work out and it makes for quite entertaining episodes!!! 😊😊
This was so wonderful and fun! Add water bubblers in the pool. Remember what David said, air circulation! Moving water helps to keep the pool clean. On another channel they have made a natural clear pond for trout. Very hard to do so they got a large bubbler that's weighted and hooked it up to a small solar panel to run it. It's just like putting in a soft fountain 😊
DEFINITELY clean and maintain the Queen Elizabeth bath/pool. EVERYONE would love to see it and your overnight guests would most certainly use it. It is treasure that could be shared, and an experience for those who are truly interested in the history of your magnificent home, and how the past owners and visitors would have utilized the features of the various pools.
Keep the water circulating and it will help keep algae away. Ponds are a prime example of algae growth because the water stands still. Get a motorized duck to move around the pool to keep the water moving 😀
Oooooooh! I love that suggestion! If they make motorized swans, that would be even more elegant …can you just imagine seeing a 🦢 patrolling the length of the pool?!
We owned a mountain ranch that was 100 yrs old. My GGpa built a cement swimming pool in the 1920’s and it so reminded me of your pool. Same type of drainage and filled by our creek that ran through the property. It had all the leaks and cracks in the cement. And the water drained like a sieve. My husband’s remedy was to patch the cracks with a product called O’Henry’s roof patch. It worked quite well and the kids and adults had a great time. We did treat with the pool with clorine because we had young children. Thanks for reminding me of those fun times. You two are so fun.
To keep the pool from forming algae, one tip I was shown was to take an empty pill bottle, poke several holes in it, and place around 5 copper fittings inside the bottle, and tighten the cap. Then place the pill bottle inside your pool filtration system. The copper fittings supposedly prevent algae from forming in your pool.
First, you all are adorable! Second when I was a kid in Indiana, there was a local estate that would allow the local kids to come and use one of the pools in the summer during daylight (with supervision of course). You had to be a local to know how to get to it because you had to walk through the back gardens of a few estates, and it was an amazing secret that we all gate kept and cherished.
My friend is called Dave the Pond. He's worked on ponds & natural swimming pools for years & has a very good portfolio of work. I'll share this video with him
I LOVE LOVE LOVE your careful documenting what's happening at Mapperton! Thank you SO much for your informative and most enjoyable video-blogs and careful recording of what's happening. This was one of the MOST enjoyable, funny and exciting episodes!! I miss England so much and visiting stately homes. To see you guys taking such great care restoring this precious estate and sharing/involving us all in the process is truly delightful! Thank you dear family.❤😊
Have you considered using a number of Horse Hay nets filled / stuffed with good quality Barley straw and distributed around the pool , thinking 3 per side and one at each end . A method I have used in irrigation reservoirs for many years , keeps the water crystal clean , you obviously have very high nitrate levels from the mains water and run off from the fields . Cheers Clive
My husband has dealt with pools for over 40yrs. He saw your original vlog. His suggestion was to build a wall behind the pool walls there is geocloth you can get. Fibreline pool in grey.
Julie asking what is that and Luke asking if it has teeth has me crying right now from laughing so hard. You two could have a traveling comedy show based on the pool if you really wanted. Thank you for this compilation. The laughs are very much appreciated!!!
Julie and Luke, if I were in a position to offer you a national award for your historic and preservation actions for the UK 🇬🇧, there would be established a national prize to honour your example for generations to come.
32:00 I would really love to see a video of this area cleared out and *this* pool drained and cleaned. If you could somehow get a filter and a heater in there it would be a fabulous hot tub but at the very least a filter.
Julie, thanks for the entertainment. As for your hubby, my ex father in law was exactly like him...."encouraging " others to do what he wouldn't. Sadly, he passed a few years ago, but he was a fun time at times.
Omg! The two of you are seriously funny! Julie is a trooper. I just saw you go in that underground water basin!😅 I could feel your fear though. And your husband omg. I've been watching your videos and they have given me so much joy and giggles & some really great ideas. I told my husband we have to visit Mapperton!
Julie and Luke what a magnificent episode, funny, Informative, eco friendly what a pleasure to be able to enjoy the life cycle of this most wonderful natural pool. Looking forward to next major program at Mapperton Manor House. Be safe, take care and God Bless 😇👍🙏🏰
Great episode! The only thing is your pool expert also mentioned that you need to aerate the water and there was no mention of that being done. Not that I've done it myself (except in a small water feature in my garden) but love the idea of a natural pool like a crystal clear swimming hole in a sandy bottom creek or river and had done some research on natural swimming ponds/pools. They stay that way due to the circulation (aeration) of the water so some way of moving the water is still necessary. So airstones, fountains or waterfalls are often included in these natural designs as are biofilters, the plants on the islands is a great start but not nearly enough to keep it crystal clear.
I have always kept up with this pool !! Good Summer memories and more to be made !! Hey I was born in the Summet lol I also recognized the hard work you put I n to the pool ❤❤
I always watch you platforms. I had not seen this one before. You and Luke had me cracking up out loud with the nettles and your swim in the cistern. I do enjoy the two of you conversing. You are both funny and compliment each other.
2:29:27 Julie, that shot of your 1930s/40s dress reminded me of Lady Diana's famous shot of her see-through dress while holding a small child at the kindergarten where she worked. :)
THIS IS BY FAR MY FAVORITE EPISODE….I LOVE IT! The title should have been Me and the Pools. 😳😂😂 Luke is the best! So composed and just full of jokes 🤪😂. Julie, thank you for sharing your lives with us.
I could never swim with creatures in the pool. Kudos to you🎉! Isn't this the same pool and Elizabeth bath we saw before? Stephen and Claire haven't worked/filmed here in a couple of years. I remember a lot of this footage. 🤔 Lots of memories! Love seeing Stormy again!!!! ❤️ You definitely need your own Reality series to earn money! Love and hugs!!!!! Do you still have your online shopping for both of your channels?
You two are hilarious. So nice to see how much fun you have together even after 20 years and raising 4 kids. And, sorry, but you're wrong, Julie. Luke is funny. All the best.
What about installing a UV filtration system so you stick to no chemicals but it would kill a good bit when you need that (not all the time) and then some type of physical filtration to get the tiny algae out before it drops to the bottom?
@KW-ew7llCan’t see how it is better. They are having this issue reoccurring with the current system and not just in a little way. Time to rethink the approach.
Rain causes acidity in the pool so it's important to introduce chemicals to keep it clean.Salt can be introduced to keep it clean.A filter system is essential to keep water clean. So instead of chlorine you fill it with mineral salt.Had a large pool in Greece and it's hard work to keep the water clean. We emptied it in winter and cleaned and refilled in the summer. But our water bill was very high. The pump going continually made our electric bill high.
Dig down behind the wall and inject sealant into the leaks, then apply a membrane and protection to the area. Equally fill cracks from poolside (this could use clay/bentonite) and repair internal wall. The base cracks need clearing out and tidying before also being filled as per walls. Could also use clay/bentonite. I would also re-design the plug arrangement. I would also introduce fish (Koi?) to help with water quality.
Consider building ramps in both the pool and pond so the wildlife can get out. I notice in the dron shots the pond always seems a lof clearer, I think more aquatic plants in the pool like you have discussed would help a lot. Better water flow and aeration would help, maybe get some floating solar powered fountains as a relatively inexpensive way to get that going.
Oh my you are so brave getting into that water! No way I would get into anything that I cannot see the bottom. I have worked in the swimming pool industry for 35 years & I know what can & does grow in water when not treated & kept circulating! 😳😁
Love how you both love your home so much!! Thank you for sharing your life. Maybe you should build a smaller lined pool, with a filter, on one end of the large pool\pond, do you can safely swim
The best way to control algae and keep the water clear is to have the water circulating and keep koi. Still water causes algae to grow. Koi will help by eating the algae. You need a large enough fountain or waterfall to circulate a pond that size. I’m not sure the plant shelves will be sufficient to filter the water. I suspect you need to submerge them in the water. Consider using river rocks to anchor the plants.
So, this old pool is really almost more of a pond? I think that’s wonderful. I enjoyed watching your pandemic swims, wishing I had access to something similar. Pressure/power washing looks like a full-body workout. Thank you for the pond pool update!
1:56:48 Oh my gosh i got a great laugh 😂 You both are so entertaining 😃! Im glad i subscibed to your channel after your castle video! ❤ You remind me so much of my Lady Heidi Breidenbach I so love ! Our arguments could get so hilarious that i do believe that was why so many people enjoyed hanging around with us ' to see what would happen next 🤣 The Queens bath episode is Priceless 😂❤ Congratulations on a job well done on the pool as it is one of a kind so magnificent and enviting 🎉 Now it needs some fountains ⛲️ and alot of love ❤️ Im looking forward to seeing the flower blooms as the islands 🏝 provide its magnificent colors ! Bravo 👏 Patrick.
You two are hysterical! I laughed so hard, getting the nettle was so funny! Omg the Queen Elizabeth bath is incredible! I need a stick! Lmao....That was truly awful! You should empty it and clean it then put twinkle lights in there and swim there!
Brava, Julie! The cold water dip was remarkable and know you found it very satisfying. Incredible pool saga, start to finish. What a shame that cleaning actually degraded the
How many cups of coffee did you have this morning???? and what did you add to it???? LOLOL!!! The poor guy keeps backing up to get away from your waving hands in his face! Who laughed out loud during this episode? Luke and Julie are absolutely comical without trying 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
“You’re not even funny!” One of the funniest and best episodes you’ve put out over the years 😂
I laughed so much! Luke and Julie are funny accidentally 😂🤣😂🤣😂
You're right. I wouldn't say he's funny, and yet he's quite amusing. Unfortunately he appears not to grasp the distinction between amusing and funny and thus tends to overegg the pudding a bit.
Luckily it all seems to work out and it makes for quite entertaining episodes!!! 😊😊
I agree!!❤😂
36:30 Julie was asking Luke for help & he kept talking about the valuable mud 😂
The lack of sympathy was hilarious 😅
Well, when I clicked on this video I did NOT expect to be sitting through all 3 hours of it but here we are. Thank you guys for a really fun journey
Hope you enjoyed it!
@@MappertonLive Yes it was brilliant :) and I've spent the most of today watching as many of the other videos on the channel as I can.

We agree, too! Such a loss to not use it and have it available.
I love that pool, put up twinkle lights!

Check Into a rock salt pool.

You and your husband were funny the way you bounce things off one another 😂Thank you for your UA-cam videos 🇦🇺
Julie you and Viscount Hinchingbrooke are hilarious! 😂 Thank you for the tour as always. ❤
Julie what a lovely person you are. It was really fortuitous when you met Luke and his beautiful family. What a champion you are. xxx

I am happy with a sea salt solution rather than any chlorine. I'm convinced that you need a liner.
That would one colossal and very expensive liner
This was fun to watch the whole pool journey. Your banter together made me laugh & smile throughout.
My husband has dealt with pools for over 40yrs. He saw your original vlog. His suggestion was to build a wall behind the pool walls there is geocloth you can get. Fibreline pool in grey.
But if they excavate all the soil outside the walls to put the film in place the walls would probably collapse.
Keep it original, that’s why it feels so good, it’s natural, it has character
Julie that was such a funny Video I laughed my Head of when you went in the Queens Pool.I agreeI wouldn’t swim in it! ❤😊

Well done peep's,love it❤
As someone who lives in Pennsylvania (US), I felt your pain with that nettle. Nettles are the bane of my yard; we've been enemies for years!
Hysterical!!! Queen Elizabeth's bath, I laughed out loud! The two of you are so funny!😂😂😂

I went to Mapperton in April, and that pool was beautiful... and scary for this city girl. 🙂
The way he pushes her buttons and her girly reactions had me in stitches!
I love the cat watching you unplug the pool
i love this episode so much ! Julie you are so awesome !! i wish i could work for you at Mapperton 💖💖💖

Best episode to this date! Luke's British humor is so on point 🤌 Chefs kiss! Love it and love your dynamic, hope to see the pool live one day ☺
Wow! How amazing. I’m afraid I’d be scared to swim in the pool but they are lovely with such history.
I could never swim with creatures in the pool. Kudos to you🎉! Isn't this the same pool and Elizabeth bath we saw before? Stephen and Claire haven't worked/filmed here in a couple of years. This underground pool is pure gold. It really should be cleaned and used. People would flock!
You two are hilarious. So nice to see how much fun you have together even after 20 years and raising 4 kids. And, sorry, but you're wrong, Julie. Luke is funny. All the best.
This reminded me of years ago when I once swam in a beautiful running stream in the New Zealand native bush that was icy cold. Very exhilarating!!
You have to keep the old doors on the pool equipment room, they are beautiful
My favourite parts of this episode are when the cat sneaks into the shot, it's clearly a very happy and cheeky kitty 😂
What about installing a UV filtration system so you stick to no chemicals but it would kill a good bit when you need that (not all the time) and then some type of physical filtration to get the tiny algae out before it drops to the bottom?

Woah, the whole “Pool Saga” in 3 hours! I laughed so hard at seeing the lizard…forgot about him and that first chat with Steve. Nice!
Yes, I have seen this before, but I enjoy watching it again.❤

Julie you look lovely in your 50’s dress. Luke glad you went for a dip in the pond pool.
Without an effective pool filtration system the pool will always be a headache to maintain. Especially one that large.
I miss the days of Luke and Julie kibbitzing and teasing 😂🤣😉
Dig down behind the wall and inject sealant into the leaks, then apply a membrane and protection to the area. Julie, I give you respect for going into the dirty water of that small pool. You aren't afraid to try anything.
That was hilarious 😂😂
You could try a salt water system. It works beautifully! It keeps it clear and clean without any harsh chemicals.

FABULOUS!! Thanks so much. Great fun. 🤩🤩🤩 Especially Dormie the frog chaser!! 🐱🦎Hurrah for Splurtle!!
3 hour & 11 minute video 😮
That is as long as a Major League Baseball Game. Lets go Cubs. 🇺🇸🇬🇧

Seems like I remember that the "floating islands" were going to keep the water clear.... What happened? Are you thinking about an aerator, yet?
We have a small pond and I find if I keep the water moving with an aerator and waterfall it helps with the algae. Plants also help.
So, this old pool is really almost more of a pond? I think that’s wonderful. I enjoyed watching your pandemic swims, wishing I had access to something similar. Pressure/power washing looks like a full-body workout. Thank you for the pond pool update!
Just watch out for Leptospirosis! My friend got it from an outdoor swimming pool in Kent
Julie, what about a sauna in the pool house? Like the vikings cold/ warm. It would be a great addition with a changing room.

Julie in the Queen Julie’s bath, Luke and Julie’s banter was the funniest damn thing!
Loved seeing Pippa!
Am i missing something but wasn't the pool empty before when Julie helped pressure wash the walls
I thought I remembered that as well, but I’m beyond middle aged, and do misremember!
That was a year after this cleaning that she as involved.
But she did see the pool empty before.
L❤VE that vintage dress!!
I lived Stormy chasing after the frogs. How many pets do you have Julie? Enjoying this episode soooo much🖤🌸
You are wonderful! I love this video!
What about the bubbles to oxygenate the water and circulation that David suggested earlier?
Conversation over olimpics made my day 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂Poor Julie 😂😂😂😂😂Luke was of a big help too 😂😂😂😂😂Oh my......that was great😂😂😂😂😂🎉❤
You two are hysterical! I laughed so hard, getting the nettle was so funny! Omg the Queen Elizabeth bath is incredible! I need a stick! Lmao....That was truly awful! You should empty it and clean it then put twinkle lights in there and swim there!
Loved this look back super-long episode. One thing I don’t understand: if jet washing caused damage and leaks, why was it done again?
Congrats , all of your team work, fabulous ❤
Brava, Julie! The cold water dip was remarkable and know you found it very satisfying. Incredible pool saga, start to finish. What a shame that cleaning actually degraded the
Gunite spray coating and saline- solar water fountains to keep the water moving
How many cups of coffee did you have this morning???? and what did you add to it???? LOLOL!!! The poor guy keeps backing up to get away from your waving hands in his face! Please tell me that you saved those cute little salamanders/newts and carried them down to the stream? Bronze salamanders as paper weights for the shop? What a great video! The pool will be beautiful!
Why not a filter on the water inlet pipe to prevent nutrients from being introduced into the pool?
Great video! More ramps for wildlife on the floating gardens. Awful when animals drown when they can't get out of the water. Thank you!!
They are really such good stewards of this piece of history.
you could surely males a long wide drag net the width of the pool out of white shade cloth and drag the whole pool one person on either side... that would be faster and less work
Julie and Luke are the best ever 😂
Thank you for sharing, 😊
I love to watch this channel x
Bromine is a much gentler purifying agent. Otherwise a mild saltwater system is even better. You want to keep the water safe to be in. Free of toxic algae, especially. Filtration is important too.
OMG - Too Funny - Oscar nomination, in a category all your own 😂😂😂 ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Enjoy your videos thanks for sharing not many get to pull the plug! Lol
