In this video Mike Mentzer shares some of the dietary and training mistakes he made as he was an up and coming bodybuilder owing to the misinformation he (and many others) picked up through the various muscle magazines of the day.

I wasn't aware of Mike's history till I found your channel, now he's my all-time favourite bodybuilder.
Thanks, Angel. He was certainly an interesting person.
100% the same here !
Sam Sulek He is blowing up with his daily uploads. Fun to watch
Why ? He's won fu%$k all, is it because he talks a good talk?
Same with 150th like
My favourite bodybuilder, can’t get enough of Mike. Wish I’d had the chance to travel back in time and meeting him-, or listening to his seminars live.
I seen mike when he come to Australia when i was a teenager ,he had a seminar ,he didnt do any posing ,just wore his sports jacket and stood behind a microphone. ..
Im not even sure now what he said ,but i know there were hundreds there ...
Mike and Frank Zane approached bodybuilding from a intellectual standpoint. That’s why they are everyone’s favorite.
Dorian Yates was of a similar mind
Great point!

I started following mike mentzer after just one yt short with mike talking about his HIT method. I cant get enough of these videos 3 months later.
I watched and followed so many Arnold videos, but after hearing that he trained up to 5 hours a day, and if you're short on time, "sleep faster" he added , I gave up on weight training, just did the occasional bodyweight exercises. Only after hearing Mike, I've got mutch more motivation now... 20 minutes per workout sounds like a dream, too good to be true. Thanks for the upload
John, your book, High Intensity Training the Mike Mentzer Way as I see it is the bodybuilding equivalent of Bruce Lee's Tao of Jeet Kune Do. Meaning to say, if one chokes hard and gets past one's attachment to what he or she held true, it contains a guide out of a blind alley. Don't stop what you're doing. Please.
Thanks, Peter. That’s high praise indeed!
YES! I seen parallels in their way of thinking when it came to fitness. Especially since both state “soreness is not a measurement of the effectiveness of a workout”
Both were legendary. I did kyokushin for many years and kinda switched to boxing and jeet kune do cause I realised its self defence I am SUPPOSE to be involving and not tournaments;
Similarly with mm's philosophical approach it made sense to me as a doctor when starting bodybuilding in my 30's. I don't believe really in protien shakes but definitely would take testosterone now that I am over 50yrs old. I don't advocate the latter if you between 25 and 35 because it literally is unnecessary unless you want to be a giant. At the end of the day I had to find a way to balance bb with m.arts... it took me a long time ⌛️. Maybe someday I should write a book. Let me explain: I once gave a few low kicks to a buddy twice my size in gym yet was in so much pain I had to treat him. The more I told him flexible big muscles require a type of kickboxing or kyokushin training the more he argued cause the same day I told him kick my legs it took quite a few before I felt pain compared to him. BTW his a former bodybuilding champion in south africa. I warned him though : your body will find that balance you need a lot of patience but you need to learn speed punching and able to take body shots.
Brilliant comparison. Bravo sir
Thank you Mr. Little we need Mike around today. You are keeping his legacy going. Also the intro music is powerful once again thank you sir
You’re welcome, Ohio Green. Glad you liked it.
If not for Mike & this channel I would've followed the same mistakes he speaks of.
Outgrowing wardrobes is both satisfying, and annoying.
Unlike most, he learnt from his mistakes.
God Bless John Little, The Mentzer Brothers and Joanne Sharkey 🙏
Used to be in the volume trap. I'm gaining more at 34 then when I thought I peaked at 27
Thank You John little
You’re welcome, Bhai G.
Mike's comment, "Falsehoods abound, severely hampering the thinking of the majority," is certainly true in bodybuilding, but also true in many other aspects of life. Indeed, the capacity for critical thinking has been severly diminished in our society, and we are all suffering for it.
The only variable when it comes to bodybuilding and the human body is the tolerance to high intensity resistance training. Some people recover and overcompensate faster than others just like a person who possesses more melanin in their skin can tolerate greater levels of UV radiation before they get a sunburn than someone who has little melanin in their skin.
The constant for everyone in bodybuilding however is brief exposure to high intensity resistance training in order to stimulate an adaptive response. If you were to adopt the fallacy of a high volume, high frequency training methods the majority of bodybuilders practice to that of getting a tan they would have you believing you could get a deep dark tan from laying under the moonlight for several weeks.
Well said.
As a penniless young teenager, I could never afford Weider's Crash weight gain formula number 7. I'm still somewhat curious as to what percentage of sugar it contained. lol.
Bodybuilding’s King of Rational Thought ! R.I.P. Mike Mentzer !!
His biggest mistake was trusting in those who ran bodybuilding - at least in the early stages. After that - no more.
Or juicing
@@jethrotool4828 A minor mistake considering the profession. Are you always a tool? Not the sharpest tool though. Even the great Bill Pearl (who died recently) used the steroid Nilivar (Norethandrolone 30 mg) as early as 1958, but did not continue use after 1961. His Mr. Universe titles in 1967 and 1971 were reportedly drug-free. May he RIP.
@@drbonesshow1 a minor mistake causing his heart failure at 50 and his younger brothers kidney disease. Tool is in the name though, at least you can read.
@@jethrotool4828 Not being Dr. Tool, MD you can only speculate on the connection between steroids and these ailments. Berger's disease (kidney) tends to run in families as does heart disease. Reading with critical thinking in mind is an important part of my profession as a physics professor unlike yours (I would surmise) at the Post Office.
@@drbonesshow1 okay sure buddy. Tell your mom I said hey. Now go to bed
Well said.. 💯%
keep on brother john. we need u
So true.
Awaiting the next one John. Thankyou Sir.
1:12 Oh? I didn’t know power twister was a thing back then. I thought it’s quite new.
Your video animation links (sequence) John, have improved leaps and bounds! The thought you put into these videos is very admirable sir!! Keep em coming plz!!
Thanks!
Absolutely correct 👍 Metzner was an extraordinary individual.
Man know thyself
Greetings from Dublin Ireland. Mike's message seems to be the best way to do it.
Thanks for your post, Karl!
Blessings from the Bahamas as always Mr. Little
Right back at ya, Hidden Meadow Music.
Man i really need your help im training with high intensity and slower but i feel like i cannot pass the MENTAL BARRIER and hitting failure is Hard because i just cannot. what can i do

@@ldelpachi845 push yourself like never before
Try finding a training partner willing to push you hard
You need to suscept yourself to deep focus more often. Try meditation or yoga. It will be a 2 birds one stone, you will gain more focus holding the poses and also improve flexibility and nerve pathways to the muscle.
can i go for run on off days?
mentzer said that if aerobic exercise must be performed, it should be done at most 2x per week on off days for 20-30 mins. Although, I have found that running every day (not at full intesity for roughly the same amount of time) has greatly increased my recovery. i have also had much better pumps at the gym. hope that helps.
i have also been following HIT for about a month now.
Hey Mr. Little. I picked up the High Intensity book last week and am about halfway through it. Would you recommend picking up both heavy duty books (if i can find them)? Or would you say that the high intensity book sums everything up the best? Thank you for your dedication.
I think the book you have contains the essential points of Mike's methods. Heavy Duty 1 contains some good supplemental material, and Heavy Duty 2 contains some great philosophical and weight gain (calories) insights. However, the program is the same. The earlier books are also very hard to come by as they are out of print and are ridiculously expensive.
@@HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE understood, thanks for the reply. God bless
such a pity he retired so young.
I think mike mentzer lived a complex lifestyle when he was alive , he had many troubles according to the media and people who knew him ,,,,,
Is it true that he used methamphetamine as a pre-workout?
No.
@@HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE ua-cam.com/video/cNExWA1FeyU/v-deo.html
That guy never knew Mike. Odd to make such a claim with no evidence (or maybe not so odd, given how so much of stuff on UA-cam is click bait).
Why do people say he didn’t get big while doing 1 set per workout?
he scored full perfect 300
Only man to ever score perfect as the @axetroll above mentioned, 300/300 score @ 1978 IFBB Mr. Universe competition. He’s the only bodybuilder to ever achieve a perfect competition score in any bodybuilding or body composition/competition event. Mentzer keys in on 1 working set per body part, with 1-3 or so warm up sets that work up to the 1 spbp line. Warm up enough and get enough rest not too much between sets 10-20seconds or so then do 1 maximum working set for that body part, this set is to complete failure of that workout for that body part.
