I have a friend that I've had for 35 years. We don't talk every day anymore, life is busy, but we both know that if we need each other, we're just a message or phone call away. As for romance, I'm finding that dating is so much harder when you're older. I'm 46, a total introvert, and have never been married but have always wanted to be. All I've ever wanted in my life was to be a wife and a mother, but neither has happened. I get depressed sometimes, since it is still all I want in life, but meeting good men is tough when you don't like going out of the house and panic in public, lol. It's okay though, since I have God, an awesome family, (my brothers are the best!) and friends who like talking on phone or through messenger, lol. Love your videos, Shawnaci!

Just read your comment and wanted to encourage you that it's never too late. Have you tried online dating? I think if you're honest about feeling anxious when going out, there are plenty of guys who also feel the same way who would accommodate a dating situation. Just put yourself out there. I love love and hate to see anybody not experience it.

I read a lot of literary fiction, in part because I love that "real life" aspect and it provides me with lived experiences that are just so different than my own. IN RESPONSE TO YOUR QUESTION AT 1:31:50 I read Contemporary Romance and Literary Fiction , yes we are okay. 😂 We eat it up like you guys eat up Romance. We laugh, cry, kick our feet in excitement and get all the feels just like you do. When it’s a genre you love it feels different for you. Romance is sometimes painful to read because it can be redundant and lackluster at times for me, but I completely understand how it’s a different experience for romance readers. Half the time, the things that make you guys so stressed/triggered in the books we read, we are used to it and read it with a blank face. 😂
It brings me joy as is escapism for me. It’s not MY LIFE so I can separate it from my reality if that makes sense. It’s like reading shows like Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy, or How to get away with murder. It feels the same way. That’s why some of us can’t understand how romance readers can read stuff that’s all HEA and it’s not real. We are just opposites of the same coin.
Hopefully you see this and read it all. It’s hard responding to a screen and you possibly not reading the comments. You had to look at Contemporary fiction and Literary fiction from a romance glass. HEA isn’t always found in a man or woman (that’s what romance is) Happily ever after in other genres can be finally becoming free from an abusive relationship, found family, friendships, GOD, yourself, your children, and many other things. When you look for a love interest to save them for love, than you’ll miss it. Also, you gotta do your footwork for good books because booktok is pushing sad books in these genres and making readers think we are sitting around crying into books all day and we aren’t. It’s not all painful, it’s everything and I always find love in the books I read. Contemporary fiction is like reading Archers Voice but with more focus on his upbringing, direct dialogue through what happened to him and the same for her , and then the find each other through it all and have a happily ever after instead of giving that background as an afterthought and focusing on just the love. Hope this helps it’s so hard getting a point across to a screen. Texting from my phone please excuse the errors. ❤

Also, Denise Williams' books are quite incredible. I just finished Technically Yours by her, and it was so good, as well as her other novels. She knows how to balance fluffy with excellent character development and tougher topics.
I love how much you emphasize reading diverse reads!!! Another one you should add to your list is All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir (author of the Ember in the Ashes series). Alongside a very heartfelt (yet complicated) romance, it deals with Islamophobia, parents with alcoholism, physical abuse, and other tough subjects but they were written so intentionally and admirably. It was my favorite book of 2023 :)

I’m that person who literally reads majority lit/contemp fiction. For me and my trauma it almost feels like exposure therapy, while also feeling less alone and seeing other women characters able to get through it in the end. My trauma has made it hard for me to connect to what I see as unrealistic just happy stories. Maybe I’m a little jaded though 😬

I love reading realistic fiction because it gives you a real perspective on a certain issue like racism, Zionism, Islamophobia, etc. we know these issues exist but reading about them educates us more and makes us more empathetic as you said :)

when ur talking abt wattpad at 27:00 ish…. lol from what i remember wattpad was originally mostly fanfiction haha i used it from when i was 10 (trauma) to like 16. it was pretty much all fanfic but this was back when the entire app was different and it was free and easy to use lol it started turning into a more “traditional” book app after it started getting more and more updates lol and soooooo many fanfic writers didn’t want to deal with it. tbh a huuuge reason i won’t pick up wattpad books is just bcuz i remember what came from that app. (will never forget the one direction/5sos/magcon etc adopted me fics 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭)
