    Cost Per Round:
    450 Bushmaster: $1.00
    50 Beowulf: $1.16
    458 SOCOM : $1.35
    458 HAM'R: $2.85 (can only find it on Willson Combat's website. A box of 20 rds for $56.95)
    (This was some quick internet searching. I'm sure if you looked harder or went to gun shows you might be able to find these cheaper)

    Do a comparison of the 458 hamr and the 45 raptor. The raptor has been out for a while and produces more than 3,000 ftlbs of energy as well and from a reloading standpoint its simple to find bullets since it uses standard 45 caliber projectiles.

    There is such a thing as 'too specialized', in order to get this cartridge to work in an AR style platform they basically had to make something that wasn't quite an AR-15 and not quite an AR-10, destroying much of the rifle and cartridge's utility in the process.
    Great it's a harder hitting .45 caliber, but lets look at some facts, you can almost certainly buy a 45-70 or .460 S&W lever action carbine for far less than this sucker and also have far more abundant choices for ammo at a lower cost. This actually seems like WC was trying to make a cartridge that imitates the .45-70's capabilities while making it compatible with a AR platform. One of those two they have apparently succeeded at given the claim of it having >3000 ft-lbf of muzzle energy, but they failed miserably at the compatibility portion of things. My guess is that after they threw a whole bunch of money at the problem and realized it wasn't going to work... WC just said "Fuck It, we're Wilson Combat! People are so stupid that they'll buy it anyway just because we made it!"
    Now on the one hand I want to give them credit for making a semi-auto .45-70. But that is immediately dealt a death blow by the simple fact that it's not a .45-70. Instead we have a brand new cartridge that is even more expensive, requires new specialty brass with limited availability, expensive custom dies, and what is likely to be a stupidly high initial cost to own and shoot.
    Yeah, no thanks. I'll stick with my .450 Bushmaster, which is even better since it uses the much more common .452 caliber over the less common .458 caliber. Let's see now, with the .452 caliber I can potentially use the same bullets to reload for the .45 ACP, .460 Rowland, .45 Colt, .454 Casull, .460 S&W Magnum, .450 Bushmaster, and God knows what else.
    For those that argue in favor of the .458, keep in mind that the majority of caliber associated cartridges are for 'Elephant Guns'. And not for more commonly available/widespread use cartridges.
    I can only guess at what the WC head honchos were thinking, most of which is rather uncharitable.

      Same reason I bought a 460 x-frame revolver over the 500. Literally hits the same, but the 500 crowd is like, mine has more ft-lbs! Well, mine has a correspondingly more FPS, so there's that. And the difference between the two on both measurements is negated by ammo choice (IMO).

      Honestly, the hunting bullets you can find in .458, far exceed what you can normally find in .452. with .450 Marlin and .45-70 gaining new popularity, for whatever reason, the selection for .458 caliber bullets has blown open. I'm dying to get my hands on those mono-metal flat-nose .458s that Cutting Edge has been putting out.

    Came up in my twitter feed. My initial thoughts were that, if I can't swap the upper out with other AR10 uppers I don't want it. It seems to me to have similar function and looks of an AR10 but it is too proprietary for me. I like the freedom to modify my weapons with major bolt on parts and not be limited to 10 round magazines due to the design of the firearm. Cool cartridge though but again too proprietary. It really should be called an AR10 Styled carbine. Just like the MKA1919 is an AR-Styled shotgun.

      458SOCOM has been around a long time and was designed around needing a hard hitting big bore caliber in a AR15. WC just figured they could build something that's been around the block a few times slightly different and put their name on it.

    Wilson Combat is great and all, definitely...but isn't this cartridge an elaborate answer to a question no one was asking? The cartridges it's designed to compete with already have enough power to take any animal in North America, so why buy a complete rifle purposely built for the cartridge when you can just buy a .458 SOCOM or .50 Beowulf upper?

    • @GallopingWalrus
      @GallopingWalrus 4 роки тому +4

      Honestly, most big bore ARs aren't great. Like even with this round. You're getting light .450 Marlin load levels. Standard .450 Marlin is a decent bit more powerful. And hot .450 leaves it in the dust. I like the idea of a semi-auto big bore, but most of them are rather anemic compared to other rounds. At this price, you might as well get a BLR in .450 Marlin, your practical ROF isn't too much lower, it's probably as accurate, if not more, and the ammo is far more common and easier to handload. And that's all ignoring .45-70 or even a smaller, arguably better in most ways, .358 Winchester.

    • @GallopingWalrus
      @GallopingWalrus 4 роки тому

      @GYPSY KING FURY If you could get a .458 WSM AR10, then you'd have something. Cause that cartridge is a decent bit more powerful than even hot .45-70 loads.

      @@u.p.woodtick3296 Yeah, not enough shooters take this into consideration. This cartridge is more powerful than the ones I'm about to mention, but some are useful for certain applications, and all use common brass. It's easy to adapt 5.56 brass to 25-45 Sharps, 277 Wolverine, and 300 Blackout. 338 Spectre uses 10mm magnum pistol brass. The 450 Bushmaster uses 284 Winchester brass, and...the 358 Yeti and 375 Stalker use .308/30-06/270/.243 cases...resist proprietary cartridges that try to force you to buy only new ammo from one source. .458 SOCOM, 300 Gr projectile, 1900 FPS with 2405 ft-lbs. muzzle energy, unknown barrel length.
      HAMR is capable of handling up to 46,000 PSI case pressure, but I cannot find an exact amount.
      SOCOM is up to 35,000 PSI case pressure maximum.

    I sure wish it was designed with a straight wall cartridge so we could use it to whitetail hunt here in Ohio... .450 Bushmaster it is then.

    I'm sure it's impressive, but still falls short of the 500 Auto Max. 500 AUTO MAX (350 gr JHP 2,300 fps/ME 4,110 ft lbs) from Buffalo Bore's website.

    Without mentioning any cartridge names, since everyone has their favorite flavor.
    Advertising muzzle energy is really meaningless unless the game you are hunting is 10 feet in front of you.
    If you are comparing energy, run the ballistics and look at the energy at 200 yards which is a common range that most people will hunt out to because of terrain, trees, etc.
    Most big bore bullets (429, .452. .458 and .499) have ballistic coefficients of .200 or below and will shed velocity and energy quickly. You can take a 300 grain in .499 and .452 calibers and launch at equal muzzle velocity with equal muzzle energy and the difference in energy at 200 yards will surprise you. Even if you increase the velocity of the .499 by 10% over the .452, the lower ballistic coefficient of .499 bullets compared to same bullet weight in .452 will still be something that will surprise at 200 yards.

    I'd love to see some ballistics also. I can see it working for deer up close but I'm guessing at 200 yards you've lost a lot of energy due to the bullet shape. I'd also like to see more of the last slow mo clip. Seems like the guy finally managed the trigger and recoil better. That first shot was painful to watch with such a large trigger slap. Also, this weighs almost 8 pounds. I'm wondering if it kicks like a mule...

      Thats like asking why anyone would need a car that does 200mph, it doesn't matter what YOU think people need or don't need its about America being a country where we can decide what we want, just because you may not like something doesn't mean you should make choices for others on what they should and shouldn't have.
