Not a football fan but I moved to Jacksonville almost 2 years ago. Prior to moving all I kept hearing was "one of the largest cities in the US!", so I'm glad you covered that aspect of it. I'll say this: even though I'm not an NFL fan, the people in this town sure are passionate about the Jaguars!

I lived in both Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. For the longest time the Falcons were the team for the state of Georgia. When the Jaguars arrived much of Southeast GA became Jaguars fans simply because they were much closer compared to Atlanta. The locals were excited to have an NFL team an hour or less away.
I was real curious how this was going to work. Jacksonville is a fickle city made up of native Floridians, transplants and Navy families. I remember a few seasons in there was a huge no show from season tick holders because the temp on game day was 45 degrees, too cold for Floridians. The local newspaper did an article on this.
Way back in the day the Dolphins were the only professional sports team in the state. All of Florida were Dolphin fans.
Jacksonville is spread out. The downtown is nothing with part of it being run down. Jacksonville is like a huge suburb with a downtown. There isn't really much to do or see there. Crime has gotten worse.

The revitalization of the stadium district will have a significant impact, boosting the confidence of certain individuals as they navigate the area. Visitors may find themselves inclined to engage more deeply with the surroundings, given the lack of diverse entertainment options, particularly for those traveling from afar.
Not to mention the stadium having a roof and being modern again.

I'm native of Jacksonville. And the whole renovations thing has been going on since 2006. And every time the team brings up wanting to do a complete overhaul of the stadium. They always want half the bill to be paid by the tax payers of Duval County, which is the entire city. But they always ask for it when losing, so the city always votes no. The tax payers don't wanna spend money on a losing franchise. 99 out of 100 citizens want the team to be there forever. But doesn't want to pay for renovations at this point. People I ask about what they think keep saying they would rather just pay to build a whole new stadium than renovations. The County has plenty of land available for use. Just has to be the right price.

I'm surprised this got recommended to me, as this whole narrative of the Jaguars being a team of struggle for its 30+ year of existing is, ironically, non-existent. Jacksonville, FL is a city that is on the rise as one of the fastest growing cities in America in terms of population, and while it's not likely a place for those to visit (as the phrase "there's nothing to do there" comes up so often), believe it or not, there are places to go; you just have to be a local to know.
    As for the Jacksonville Jaguars:
Tarps didn't come off due to renovations, it came off at the request of fans in Jacksonville. London games exist for the sole purpose of generating popularity outside the U.S.; the Jags currently have fans overseas in the UK & Ireland as NFL International presences of those countries. The $2B stadium deal as of recent looks so good, even the past mayor (who is on the opposing political party in comparison to the current mayor) is pushing for this deal to go through.
Another thing: this person absolutely did not see the recent January 2023 Wild Card Playoffs game vs Chargers as the place rocked behind a sold out stadium despite the early 27-point deficit.
The Jacksonville Jaguars don't struggle to exist, they're fighting the world against them with these false narratives pitted against them every day. Whether that's relocation talks to L.A. from before the Rams & Chargers were relocated or in today's world: the UK which would not make sense at all logistically; the city stands tall against all the criticisms of outsiders.

This whole video is nonsense and shows a lack of on location research. Jags fans are some of the best in the NFL. In fact, this week our City agreed on a total stadium renovation. We already built a brand new football facility last year. The Jags aren’t going anywhere. I don’t know why you and national media seem to always be pushing that the Jags are constantly looking to relocate. It’s simply not true. My guess is all your assumptions about Jax come from downtown. I suggest if you ever do visit Jax, take a drive to the beach, visit the Southside, take a boat cruise on the St Johns. There’s more to Jax than downtown.

    1. Jacksonville isn't struggling to support the Jaguars anymore. This video would he more appropriately in 2019.
    2. The main reason for lack of local support in the 2000s and 2010s is that they sucked most of the time, and half the cities population are people who moved there from other places in the US. Many peoples are already fans of other teams and therefore don't have a connection to their local team.

This is ridiculous. No NFL team ‘struggles to exist’. They all make huge profits, including Jacksonville. Over the last dozen years, the Jaguars had only two winning seasons, yet they averaged over 60,000 a game. They’ve sold a lot more tickets than the Rams did in St. Louis, despite the Rams winning a Super Bowl and making another Super Bowl appearance. The existence of the Jacksonville Jaguars always baffled me. They’re kinda like the NFL’s version of the OKC Thunder or Utah Jazz, which are super small markets that pretty much got teams by dumb luck. The real reason why Jax even has a team is because their owner was willing to build a gigantic brand new stadium at the right time. At the time, St. Louis or Baltimore probably deserved a team more than Jacksonville
Geographically, Jacksonville actually makes a lot of sense for a team. Football is practically a religion in the South, so if your team is halfway decent fan support and market size won’t be a huge issue (just look at the Saints). Jacksonville is also in a pretty good position, to where it’s far enough from Tampa/Orlando, Miami, Atlanta, and Charlotte. So the team pretty much owns all of North Florida and Southern Georgia which is actually a huge plus. Not to mention that Florida and Georgia are growing like crazy.
In any other universe Jacksonville would not have a team. I personally think that Orlando would’ve been a better option for a 3rd team in Florida, but J-Ville isn’t too bad I guess

    • @thebikewatcher9819

Believe or not, Jacksonville is actually the largest city in Florida. Area wise it's one of the largest in the country. Orlando is the 4th largest city in Florida, though it is a larger market, because it is more well known/visited. Orlando would be a tough sell for the NFL, simply because it is less than 100 miles from Tampa, and the competition for marketshare would be tough.

Yea this video is BS. Do your research. We are more than capable of paying half for this stadium to be redone. Its Jacksonvilles stadium to renovate to begin with. We own it. So to have an NFL owner willing to pay half is a huge plus. We did half on the practice facility (that Jax owns) but the Jags use and maintain. Shad has even taken over caring for Everbank and Metro park. Huge tax relief for us. Our new Gov has been a life long season tix owner. I dont see her letting the Jags go. Its to important for the city....and her career lol. But Jax is growing by 1.2%+ annually. So the tax burden continues to decrease as long as that growth continues. Its a really a great place to live. Yes we have crime. So do a lot of major cities. We have some of the best weather. Especially in Oct-May. Late Jan and beginning of March can be cold. But the rest of the time is some of the best weather you'll ever have. Jax just needs to start promoting their culture more. Its where Hollywood started. Promote that! Its the birth place of Southern Rock. Promote that. Ray freaking Charles got his start here in LaVilla. Promote that! We have so much that just isn't shined on. Need to turn that around! Oh and dont forget the 4seasons being built right across the road from Everbank. Shad owns this hotel and its already started construction.

No ones put up a billion dollars in public money for a stadium to this point, and Jacksonville is the least qualified to do so and thats not even for a new stadium, when Miamis owner wanted money for a rennovation the city told him to pound salt and he paid for it himself. There frankly isnt the tax base or desire based on polling for the project, if that went to the polls it would fail by a decent amount. What are they gona do add a 50% hotel tax? See how that works out. The only way that project happens is either its mostly privately funded, the state gives them a handout like Ny did to Buffalo, or the project is massively scaled down.

Orlando has everything that Jacksonville doesn’t: a major international airport, 130,000 hotel rooms to Jacksonville’s 20,000, endless amounts of world-class attractions and restaurants, and the 17th-largest TV market in the country (Jacksonville is 41st). Orlando gets 70 million tourists a year while Jacksonville gets 6 million. Orlando's tourism tax collects $300 million per year while Jacksonville collects $5 million. Both have big football stadiums that are asking for a lot of public money for renovations.
I was a vocal advocate against Orlando’s Major League Baseball stadium proposal because it was clearly a bad investment. Baseball is a boring, dying sport (notice the A’s and Rays are building stadiums that are the smallest in MLB) and no major events want to play an MLB stadium. Renovating Camping World Stadium into a world-class, covered NFL stadium will bring every big event Orlando could possibly want. It will also mean Orlando's giant stadium actually has a tenant.

The price tag for renovation is very steep and given their history, a couple of peaks but a lot of rough times, justifying that investment is hard. But it looks for now like plans are moving forward. What they have in their favor is a state that would likely pitch in and the fact there are not any obvious places to relocate. LA and Vegas were the relocation jewels but those are now taken. So unless they're winning? If its hot, cold, or raining, people go inside

Been to the stadium several times for the GA/FL game. It's a dump and the area around it isn't very welcoming either. Jags should move out.

Remember the pandemic? We thrived while your hotels & attractions sat empty. Btw, Disney wanted Jax but the city leaders back then were wary of basically, one investment company buying a ton of acreage & what it will do to the city, if they agree to that. So they said no, and then later found out, it was Walt Disney looking to expand his Disney parks in FL. He had no recourse but to look at your swamplands, Orlando. The rest is history. So, thank Jax for your good fortune & hands off fr my Jags, Orlando.

You need to take this video down, very misleading. They’re not struggling to have an nfl team. They have the richest owner in the league😂. Over a decade ago, the “not being able to sell tickets” narrative was debunked when it was revealed that there stadium (originally built for the Florida Georgia rivalry) had the largest seating capacity for the third smallest market. In other words there 60 to 70k game would still leave the upper decks empty because of the stadium size for for 100k. They’ve just signed two franchise cornerstones , one the richest contract in the league per position and the other resetting the market. The city is finalizing the new stadium…. It’s crazy to think that imaginary narratives from over a decade ago people still run with.
