Good tutorial Cody but one thing everyone and this is very important: Read the workshop manual. If you don't have one, this is what it says: If and when you rebuild your starter clutch don't forget to clean the rollers and slots they run in, removing all traces of oil. That's right, no engine oil. As the manual states, it is very very important that we only use automotive silicon grease on these rollers. Silicon grease has lubrication qualities that allow the rollers to grab the race more efficiently. Oils and other greases are too slippery for this type of clutch unit to work at its best. When you use silicon grease, the unit will operate even better. Enjoy the ride!

Out of curiosity,on these 350s i guess this piece doesn't sit inside the crankcase itself? i have a 550 and on mine they sit inside the crankcase drenched in oil,i guess they are made different that this one?

I worked for Honda years ago and a few years back restored a '72 CB 350 TWIN to play with once in a while. Enjoyed watching your video, very casual but very informative to people that need info on getting around what could be a real headache. You need to put out a few more.

I have this same issue on a project cb360. I took it to a shop just to make sure the engine was good before I continued with the project. The guy suggested that I may need to remove the starter and go kick start only, otherwise I could damage the engine. He said that if I wanted to keep it electric start that it would involve splitting engine cases in order to repair the problem?? I did not understand fully what the issue was, but your video explained it very clearly and I think I now know what he was referring to. Thanks a lot for doing this video in such detail!

Great video, loads of useful information! Just a quick tip to save some money, the rear wheel axle will fit the thread of the rotor and can be used as a rotor puller!

This was pretty great timing for me. My 83 CB1000 was making that awful starter noise and I'd just pulled it apart but wasn't sure what I was looking at. This helped A LOT!

You should make your website a hub for video how to when working on Hondas. You cant fix everything ever on every motorcycle that Honda built, but you are a Honda tech, so people could submit how to videos to your site, you go over it, if they aren't doing the repair right then don't post it, but if it is clear that they are following a service manual or are also a mechanic, then you could post the video. Your site could become a wikipedia for all Honda motorcycle repair and a person could pay the monthly fee in order to have solid how to videos, kind of like the donation stuff with Wikipedia. Also, I enjoy watching you fix things. Top notch videos.

My 82cb750k sounded very similar last year. The rollers and the clutch gear needed replacement. The gear was so scored and messed up. Found an original, in the package, replacement on eBay in Italy! It starts so smooth now.

Thanks for the video. You popped in the info about making a kick start system only very quickly but you ought to consider doing a short video specifically on that (including installing the plug). Would also love to see a video about rebuilding a starter motor. Really appreciate these videos. This one was a little dark so you might check your exposure/light correction settings.

A free( everyone should have this) rotor removal tool is to use the rear axle from the bike . The threads are the same. I had my rear wheel removed so it was available to me and it worked great.

I had a similar problem on my dohc cb750. the bolts you mentioned backed out but one of the rollers actually fell out of its place as well. really weird, now idea how it happened. I did some research and its something that often happens on these Hondas. I also found out that you can replace the starter clutch with one from an r6 that is more robust, and its nearly a bolt on solution

Hey Cody, great video. On the magnet question, a magnet near or against a steel table will not cause it to lose its magnetic properties.

    • @chrisbaker121924
      @chrisbaker121924 5 років тому

Douglas Phillips if anything it should help preserve magnetism... as it would act like a keeper?
Certainly as you say won’t hurt as it’s always sat on a steel cog anyway.

Hello, I have a 1964 honda cb77 and have just rebuilt and am in the process of reinstalling my starter clutch. Everything seemed to go smoothly however when I tried to put the sprocket that goes onto the starter motor it would not slide on far enough to allow me to put the clip on to hold it in place. Any suggestions? Thanks.

tip add some silicone to the threads of the bolts helps with stopping the leaks and stops the bolts un screwing them selves

How do three rollers pushed inward by tiny springs on to a smooth gear surface, create enough friction to turn over the entire crankshaft I don’t get it at all????

  • @aikanekai
    @aikanekai 3 роки тому +1

Sorry guys.. DO NOT USE GREASE OR OIL inside the starter clutch assembly! It's a no-no.
I made this mistake and my as new spec starter clutch would not engage as well as it should have. I then went back to the factory manual and read the following.
The FACTORY service manual explicitly states: "
    4. Servicing
    -
The serviceability of the starting clutch is dependent
upon the function of the roller, therefore,
exercise the following precautions when handling
    the rollers.
a; Use only the specified silicone grease as
    lubricant on the rollers.
    b. Clean the rollers in gasoline and dry thoroughly
before applying a light coating of silicone
grease to entire surface of the rollers before
assembly, using a fine hair brush.
    c. Characteristics of the silicone grease
(a- Little change quality from low temperature
    through high temperature)
(b- Temperature causes very little change to
the friction coefficient on coated metal
    surface ! )

Great video. I wasn't even thinking about starter clutches, but now I'm wondering if mine may eventually need some work. (1975 CB750.) I've had the bike for two years and 99 percent of the time it fires right up and sounds great, but every so often (maybe 1 out of 100 starts) it makes a weird noise when I hit the starter and doesn't start. I'll push the start button again two seconds later and it'll fire up fine. I guess if it starts happening more often, I should take a look at it. Or should I take a look now? It hasn't been getting worse from what I can tell. Also...that wasn't a phillips head screw driver, Cody, it was a JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard). I thought you went to Honda college, man. : )

Would the 98 tail fairing fit right on ? I know I'd need to change rear light and maybe seat ,but just wanted your input on the fairing fitment .

Very useful video. I bot a repair kit from Common-motor.com which was just the 3 rollers, pins and springs and had an older mechanic (familiar with old Hondas) install it but it did not help (1969 K1). Online seems other have had same experience (to be fair, the kit often solves the problem) So on another of my three old Honda twins (1976 CB500T) when the starter was slipping I bot a new starter clutch (very expensive and apparently the last one available in N Am. and UK) and had the mechanic install that along with the kit and that cured the problem. But from viewing your vid it seems that the inner part of the "clutch" is unlikely to be worn out by the 3 rollers so maybe it was a waste of $ for the clutch and the kit cured the problem? So my main Q is if I can ever source another starter clutch (PN 28120292000) will it likely solve the problem on the K1? (the starter motors all worked fine)
