@@WillOfMyD I mean from what I understand, passport bros almost unanimously have beliefs about traditional gender roles especially for women, which is kind of the reason they travel to countries with more traditional women in the first place.

I'm Thai. I don't know why people are so anti-gay. I was born with a gay nanny. My mother's friend is a ladyboy. My classmates included gays, ladyboys, lesbians, and toms. I always viewed it as normal. I don't know why Thai society is like this. But I think that's fine.
Me too. It was so normal even 20 years ago.
Thailand is quite conservative, but in a different way compared to the West. Our right-wing people are royalists who strongly support the monarchy and wish to preserve it at all costs. Meanwhile, our left-wing people want to reform the monarchy and limit its power.
They generally agree on identity politics and other issues such as climate change.
Thailand does not have Christian Nationalism and does not have Radical Islamic Jihad hence why even the most Right Wing Thai Person does not have a problem with LGBTQ People.

that one guy in chat who heard LITERALLY 3 notes of ABBA and called it immediately.
To be fair, those are 3 very recognizable notes.
Honestly, even though I know a lot of ABBA by heart, my first thought was 'Hung Up' by Madonna, who sampled that song. And while I'm not the biggest Madonna fan, that song was peak 2000s pop for me.
Since the pre-Islamic era, the Bugis people have recognised five genders. They divide the society into man (oroane), woman (makkunrai), male woman (calabai), female man (calalai) and androgynous priest (bissu). They converted to Islam in the 1600s and kept their five gender culture. They make up only about 3.5 million of the 275 million population of Indonesia. the fact that hey have this as the cultural norm tells me Islam itself doesn't need to be anti gay.
Islam became homophobic due to European colonialism, so its not that surprising. Nowadays most muslims are actively erasing that aspect of their history though.
As Indonesian i have to say that Trans people (specificly Trans Women) has been a part of Indonesian culture for the longest time.
It is so ingraned in our culture so much so that it still has roots in the most Islamic section of the country such as Sumatra and Java.
However the sentiment of Trans people never goes beyond just kinks and/or se*ualzation. It is a known public secret that Straight and Bi Men have some sort of experiences with Trans Women. From looking at Corn of them to having intimate session with them.
But when they are asked for their support of LGBT+ rights, they are hesitant to out right denying. Eventhough those men have experienced with Trans Women before.
It is sad state to see, that a long historical culture is being deny of existence by another culture that decided to conquer the land.
@@farel0888 Hi there, Malaysian here.

@@Lbb291 I don't. My comments keep being deleted, so idk what I said
I'm genuinely surprised that it took this long, Thailand has had three recognized genders since the 14th century. Kathoey have been religious leaders and taken part in royal courts for hundreds of years.
Has that persisted or did it disappear when the French started sticking their baguettes into the region? I know Thailand was never colonised.
I think it's likely a situation of "the people and/or country don't mind gay people, but gayness just isn't recognized in the law".
Don't mistake the localized tolerance of ladyboys for widespread acceptance of queerness. Ladyboys and other queer people still face plenty of discrimination in such a conservative society. But there is a space for it all to happen, and Thai people generally just shrug and accept it. The lack of colonization saved Thailand from a serious crackdown, but it didn't save it from its own prejudices (preexisting or otherwise) .
Wanna know a more insane fact. Before British rule and Islam turning conservative in India, homosexuality was seen as a normal joyous act and trans people were not only accepted but normal. Look at the laws now, What a mess. Illiterate Hindutva upholding a known, outwardly expressing, gender fluid deity and being anti trans has to be actual illiteracy. Like I mean India in the 1600 was actually more accepting of trans and lgbt people than now. Like for real though. Oof.
Tolerance is not acceptance, coming from a Thai person. I still remember as a kid Thailand, and its Buddhist institutions, were deeply homophobic and transphobic. Pride parade in Chiang Mai once was disrupted by fanatic Buddhist protesters. It has only been in recent years that tolerance turned into acceptance, or perhaps returned is a better word.
No country has been as ready for this ruling before then. Both chambers voted in favor of this with like 95% of the votes. I asked around why it took this long and was told social issues took backseat because of uhh.. coup. Military holding power for nearly 2 decades kinda halted everything progressive. From the sounds of it, this could've happened a decade later there. Hope this leads to change in the neighboring countries too, though probably not in Muslim majority ones.
Yeah in India, gay marriage has been surging since they decriminalized it and the younger generation have more access to the internet. However because of Modi and his regime, it will be a while before gay marriage is allowed in India
Decriminalised? So they allow it but don't recognise it?
@@RealFemale69 India decriminalized homosexuality in 2018. Gay marriage as per Indian Supreme Court is not a fundamental right.
I LOVE the sinner AND the sin 😎
Or even better yet. There's no sin about LBGT+.
@@nielsjensen4185 why are you trying to make it sound less cool?
@@StormCrownSr Because words have power. When you call it "love the sinner and the sin," you verbalise that it's still a sin and thus "wrong."
@nielsjensen4185 I agree. But when the op is clearly an ally, you doing that, just makes it seem like you're "that guy" at the party.
@@StormCrownSr That makes it worse as people reading that will interpret it as them getting "permission" to feel that way.
It's kinda like how people with disabilities have to clown on themselves so that other people without disabilities they meet feel that they're in a safe space and thus easily end up saying the most insane shit that the person with disabilities is unable to protest since that would make the self-depreciation fake.
As for "it's just taking the word back," that fails too. Just look at how the N-word is used with an A. People with a racist belief, at least if they're smart about it, will use the A-version as a dog whistle and then claim plausible deniability that they never met the hard R version, and people will have to abide by that or they'll be the unreasonable ones.
Vaush himself is an example of this as in an earlier stream he went over a woman, who has insane levels of racist ideology, who was clearly using the soft-A version as a dog whistle for the hard-R and was, "I'm unable to understand why she was fired for using the soft-A?" This is because the plausible deniability is supposed to create a fake context that makes people ignore the real context.
It's much better to force people to answer uncomfortable questions that expose their ideology, like:
"How come you think it's a sin?"
And then when answer because it's in the Bible, then you ask then.
"How come you think our standards should be influenced by a book written over 2000 years ago?"
You keep going and going until they either have to shut up because they realise that answering will make them look really bad, or more realistically, they unintentionally go mask-off.

although gay marriage is not legal in the Philippines, it is surprisingly accepting to lgbtq people, they 'tolerate' more ig, u can casually see a trans person and no one would bat an eye, although there is a problem where some people confuse gay and trans since they share the word 'bakla', when i came out as gay to people, most of their reactions are "oh shi ur a girl now? cool cool, do i call u she?" and i have to explain to them im still a guy

BL is soft power that Thailand wields. So that's where they found him. I know his face and I'm European, never even been to Thailand.
Ugh, Thailand has gone woke. What's next. Trans rights and gender reassignment being recognized
Gay people have been widely accepted in Thailand for a while. The occasional "Hah, gay" joke, but we do that in the West as well. My understanding is that it's mostly because of buddhism, which doesn't care about it as opposed to the Abrahamic religions, combined with the fact hat that Thailand was never colonized by a Western country, so it got even less influence on that front than, say, Vietnam or Cambodia or Myanmar (although I'm less familiar with the culture of these countries than I am about the Thai one).
The complicated thing is kathoeys, often referred to as ladyboys even though it's kind of a slur (it's complicated). On first glance, they're relatively well accepted by the Thai society, but if you look deeper, they're generally thought of as being, by default, s*x workers, and it can create friction if a kathoey instead goes for an office or factory job. I have known HR people who discriminated against kathoeys because they thougt it would create friction, with the gendered bathrooms and whatnot. The family might also not like it, but that might be because they're thinking that by default it means their kid is going to be a s*x worker, and they may not want that, even though prostitution is widely accepted in Thailand (illegal on paper, but nothing is ever enforced).
But gay people specifically, I've never really seen any Thai people having a problem with it. If there's any bigotry, I haven't been exposed to it. I'm not surprised by the news that they're legalizing gay marriage, I know it's been in the work for a long time. Good for them.
(I'm not Thai, I'm French, but have lived in Thailand for many years, just for the record. This is my vision based on my interactions and discussions with different people about these topics, so it may not be completely accurate. Just leaving this here)
Regarding the military, they have been in power on and off for a long time, at the moment the government is a civil one (since last year). The king is more or less separated from that though, he's still the supreme executive authority regardless of whether the prime minster is a general or a civilian, and whenever you hear of a coup in Thailand, it's not an overthrowing of the king, it's an overthrowing of the government (generally of a previous civil government by the military who then assumes power, like in 2014).
Thailand has always had a thriving gay and trans segment. It is good they are working against bigotry.
You are wrong about the homophobia in colonised places being a reaction to western values, the homophobia IS or rather was western values, from the period they were colonised. Since then western missionaries continue to preach homophobia in those colonised places. Like Uganda.

Historically, there have been varying attitudes towards homosexuality (specifically male) in the Islamic world. A lot of Urdu poetry refers to Allah as an unbearded youth the author is in love with. I think attitudes definitely went towards the negative w/ the rise of the ultra-conservative Wahhabism.

The King is not a mouthpiece of the military, or even the bourgeoisie (as some Thai socialists believe). The King is the source of political legitimacy (the only time a coup d'etat failed was when the King was prevented from signing it), is his own political force, has his own actual military command, owns major stocks of many massive corporations, is the biggest landlord in Bangkok (most malls pay rent to him). Before it could look like the King holds no actual power, as all of this only happened after the last coup d'etat in 2014, when all royal properties were transferred to private ownership, and the royal guard strengthened.
