Special thanks to Andre and Gemma for hosting me and videos! Here is their outstanding online paragliding courses andrebandarra.thinkific.com
Great to have you here Sam!
Question sam. If you are right cheap what are some items you don’t cheap out on or go without?
Whoa, amazing photography. loved the 360 stuff. loved the unfurling of the spinnaker. LOVED the life jacket. You know the way to your mamma's heart.
I can imagine how proud you are of your sailor! I have been a water person my whole life but medical has stuck me on land. I love watching my SV people and their adventures.
Take it easy buddy
“I’m just an amateur”. One of the things I love about you Sam is that you make sailing relatable to couch sailors like me despite the fact that you’ve sailed almost every ocean on this planet. Makes me think I could do this one day too. 👍
You have inspired me to try paragliding!
You should! Be carful though, its addicting
The 360 cam is AWESOME!
My new favorite toy!
That parasailing at the end was bad ass! 🤙🏻
This man is living the dream!
Sam the Man, great sailing and flying, thanks🎉
Great episode with spinnaker and flying session 🙏🏼 greetings from Denmark
Nice! Guess who is lining himself up for a new wing? :)
Crosses Atlantic solo….”I’m just an amateur!”
The dolphins are beautiful!
I'm glad to see you are enjoying Portugal!
Thanks for the ride Sam, enjoyed every moment… John, Ontario, Canada….
"I am just an amature" - I look on in complete wonder.
Your videos always brighten my day. I loved the 360 cam.
He brightens your day because you’re more boring than he his .
Well, he sets a high bar, eh?
@@marklchapman2785 Do you make videos Mark?
Congratulations on your perfect execution of a touch n' go with Andre's rig. ;-)
Sam, I met you in Titusville a few months ago. I was the guy that said hi Sam as I came into the dock and you were working on your free boat. Anyways I was just in the German Alps and watched many paragliding flights and it was pretty amazing. Thought of you since you said at the time you'd be going to the Alps after I mentioned how much we all enjoyed your flights I believe in Scotland. Enjoy your sail through Europe.
Man to just leave it all and live on a sailboat. It's all I think about now.
My favorite part about your sailing videos is you actually sail a great deal of the time. I often see sailing vessels motor up the second the wind dies.
I totally understand the desire to get moving but I always enjoy your willingness to relax and enjoy the moment.
This is one of the best videos I've seen on this channel!
The paragliding was cool, so neat that have have that skill and can enjoy it!
Ah.... What is it they say? One boat and you're sailing, two boats and it's a race :)
Boat looks good with the spinnaker.
Another awesome Sam Holmes sailing video! Thanks Sam, I needed that!!..⛵⛵⛵
Another great one! Good to sea you paragliding again! Thank you!
Ive always wanted to go to portugal to find my roots. Im so glad you enjoyed your time there
The selfie cam on a stick footage is terrific.
Sam you might wanna keep the pole of the forestay when you are on a reach. Big risk of breaking the pole (or worse: the forestay) if you don’t 😅. Stay safe out there, love following your voyage!
Your videos always keeps me up at night cuz you upload them so late, but also makes me fall asleep after
I try to post them late so they will come out when my largest audience in the US will be awake.
@@samholmessailing I understand. sleep well/safe sailing wherever you are now
Another fine holmes production. Making friends wherever he goes
Just missed you in Nazare!
thanks - RIP Ocean-Gate !!!
Learnt to fly at around the same time place as Andre.... Great guy... as ifhe's in your video 😂... much love
Great video as usual. Love content with the pickle out on the high seas.
7000 views in 3 hours, way to go Sam. You provide us with some great content, useful and great viewing as usual
Wow! Those shots with a camera somehow on the end of a pole are spectacular!
Happy birthday, dear Sam! Love ya! Grams
Thanks Grams ❤️
Loved the Dolphins, the unfurling of the spinnaker, and your attitude makes it seem like a lot of fun, I could see you using a drone out in the middle of nowhere! Happy Paragliding!
I grew up on the ocean but I'm not comfortable sailing more than a few miles out EXCEPT I would trust this guy to sail us anywhere. I have a lot of confidence in Sam
@SamHolmesSailing. I'd rather not
I hear you are meeting up with Atticus Ii...the Budds!
Yes I met them today just before they left for Greece. Love them!
Sam your cool dude Love your channel.
I love your unpretentious can-do attitude - very refreshing.
Pole perpendicular to wind, trim to fill, then ease the sheet until the luff just breaks.
Tie a piece of yarn (12" or so) to the middle of the pole, and it makes a great telltale. Easy then to set it perpendicular to the apparent wind.
Thanks!
Danger equals excitement, and Sam is smart enough to realize that fact.
Cool flying!
Man, you should have stopped in Aveiro instead of Figueira! There is a beautiful lagoon and much more to see!
Really enjoy your footage, makes me considering plans to leave land to explore all seven seas! btw I cannot agree more with you concerning flying the spinnaker! Thank you!
That was some great sailing and gliding.
Love the flight and insta 360 footage! Also appreciate you brining in more dock handling and sailing notes of experience like flying the spinnaker. One of your best videos! Dean
Bro, you got a 360. Very cool.
The waves at Nazaré get huge only around September - October....this is when professional surfers get out there to break records. The waves hit huge just North of the lighthouse.
Good stuff. You made that hang gliding look somewhat easy!
Seems like you'd miss your own boat stepping off learning that trick
Later with dolphins 🐬 as well
Waveguide like radar perhaps with trough
And then coming in at night to a new harbor.
Cliff hanger wanted another round touch and gos
Looked like fun
Local knowledge as well thermals where to get the lift...
That was pretty cool!
I had sailboat all my life. But now I live in the North Carolina mountains, playing golf. You make me want to get back in the ocean!
That was awesome
Awesome
Good to stay busy and good with putting up. . .but I agree with everyone else, for not racing, a code zero or Asym is 90% of the spinnaker with 20% of the set up. Can still use the pole but don’t really need the uphaul/down haul. . .Super light don’t need to roller reefing. . .Just an easy low wind sail. . .Love that you put the time into the spinnaker, but it looked like you had it resting on the forestry. . .It might not have been, but that’s not safe.
This was great! I thoroughly enjoyed the paragliding and the differences between yours and Andre’s . His was like a race car compared with everyone else’s 4door sedan’s! Everyone should look great with it, although he’s like part bird …..I have a feeling you’ll have one of the lighter ones soon too, you looked like you were enjoying it.
Im jealous
I have a GP14 Symetric spinnaker for my Drascombe Lugger. It added 1.5KTS of speed recently in a very low wind situation. I mostly fly it Asymetrically as its a lot easier to sale and as long as you pull it down hard with a cleat fore of the shrouds it flies really well.
I only use it for low wind scenarios and try not to use it symmetrically as its so hard to pole out etc.
Many people assume you want to go fast with a spinnaker but you;re right Sam, they often just keep you going in light airs which is exactly why I have one.
Right on. Exactly. Ive tried using mine without the pole. I found the most time consuming part was running all the lines and repacking it. the pole didn’t add much extra time or effort for me and seems to fly a lot better dead downwind. So I always use it. I do have a really well set up track system from my pole that’s really easy to deploy so that might make the difference.
So cool
Naz has the biggest waves. Killers.
The really big waves at nazare you see photos of only break 2-3 times per year
The rest of the time its still big (and dangerous for navigation) by normal standards
The record breaking waves are the result of the most intense winter storms per season
No one would be out sailing anyway; the local fishermen probably stay in as well
Thanks a bunch for the dolphin swim attempt.
Loved the flying segment.
Fab! Sailing with the hope of a surf and going paragliding instead! Life's good for sure.
Good point on the spinniker pole - keep it perpendicular to the wind and lifted so that the foot of the kite is as level as possible. They are effective downwind and very pretty. If you want to get rich, figure out a cleat that automatically plays out spinniker sheet as the boat heels excessively to avoid broaching.
Stay safe out there Sam. The whole world has just been reminded of the power of the oceans.
The world has been reminded of stupidity of mankind…
So awesome Sam. Thank you.
Livin the good life, for sure!
151st subscriber LIKE clicked for this the 1,282nd desktop studio tag-along shipmate view. I'm surprised you don't wear gloves while paragliding.
So Sam can curse like a sailor!
Nice to see you flying again!
You didn’t leave your friend in the “dust”, you left your friends in the “drops”. 😅
Good times
Thank you SHS!
I met so many great people paragliding
That's a magical selfie stick there my friend... Haha.. great video... Only watch your channel and James the sailor.... Much respect...
Nazaré is a Awsome place .. I think you should show the Lighthouse and the area of the Worlds Biggest waves ... that is the Spot!
Good one Sammy!
That was so nice, always wanted to hang glide.
Great video!!!!
enjoy the ride!
Very cool
Cool to see you flying again
I feel uneasy to point anything to a great sailor with so much experience but I have to: 4:30 Beware Sam do not let the pole rest on the forestay as the lateral force is translated in a much stronger longitudinal pull on the stray that could break it (or the pole).
Might not be critical in your case but why tempt fate when so much sh%t can go wrong already.
I know you knew, ,just absentmindedness I guess.
Great video again and thank you for sharing your journey with us .
PS:Dolphin#1 "human jumping in the water"
Dolphin#2 "smells like asparagus, lets split"
So sick!
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU DON'T DO ,,,,YOU ARE 1 BAD DUDE ...BLESSINGS
Another fine holmes production 😂
NICE SAILING AND PARA GLIDING TIME
Cool stuff!! Loved the flying bit near the end. Need to get into it.
Every time I see your vids I regretting working at the office in a building😢
Thanks
Good stuff Sam :)
You are awesome .... channel should be called "Sam Holmes the Sky's the Limit Sailing Canvas and Wing" .. Too bad they didn't have bigger swells to look at while soaring? Oh well...Loved the episode.😊
Super nice. I like your friend.
it's so strange the camera's don't register the poles in the frame...
Nice
