It's so important to always be instilling (notice the continuous tense) in your children the absolute unquestionable knowledge that they are able to approach you with ANYTHING on their minds. At any time. It is crucial for any child's healthy development and practical safety that they are certain beyond any doubt that they won't get in trouble, admonished, or quieted/shut down in any way if they choose to tell or ask their parents anything.
It is such an important foundation to have in a home if one hopes that their child will come to them with any questions about any kind of sensitive topic, and definitely if one hopes their child will come to them if their child is ever chas v'shalom abused in any way.
So often children keep the abuse a secret from their parents out of fear of not knowing how their parents will react, and that fear is so preventable if parents are constantly reminding the children, both by verbalizing it, and by actively showing them time and time again, that the children will only benefit by being open with the parents and that there is no reason they will regret it.
Children need to feel safe coming to their parents with anything if parents hope to be the first people their child will (immediately) want to turn to whenever they need to talk about something with an adult.

I had the great zchus of being chavrusas with Dr Zimmerman when he was only 19 and i was 28 and even at that age when he was only in school i thought he was going to be a great psychologist. I was correct but obviously there was no way to know the tremendous positive influence he would have on the frum world.

Amazing episode!! Love how he expressed the balance of “it wasn’t me” but also taking Achrayos for actions.

56:14 DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) believes in that.
In the first session of DBT, in the intro, you learn that yes, there may have been many different external factors that have caused your trauma and that led you to develop BPD (or any other mental illness that one has, since not everyone who does DBT has BPD even though DBT was created specifically for those with BPD), but at the end of the day, it is up to you and only you to improve the quality of your life by working on your character traits, your emotion regulation, etc.
So even if the things that happened to you were entirely not your fault, who you are as a person and how you interact with the world, as well as whether or not your life circumstances will determine how the rest of your life will play out, is 100% up to you.

I asked one rosh yeshiva who I knew did not have such a conversation with his own children, why does he say to have such a conversation? He told me that these days wether we like it or not, there is a good chance that a child will hear it from someone else.

It's ironic that in every frum podcast that Dr. Zimmerman is on to speak about the need to put issues of sexuality out in the open the entire podcast dances around actually discussing it openly.
