- Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson plays a christmas concert in Canterbury Cathedral with special guest Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden
In my opinion J. Tull and Bruce should definitely make an acoustic record like this together...
Ian Anderson and Bruce Dickinson, the 2 best front men in the world!
They are playing the hymn "O God of Earth and Altar" by G.K. Chesterton, which is set to the melody of "King's Lynn" by Ralph Vaughan Williams. First stanza is used in Iron Maidens "Revelations" (Piece of Mind, 1983).
How amazing is Bruce? Doesn't even need a goddamn microphone!
I think he probably just took one look at the building and realised the acoustics were amazing (that is after all a large part of why they're built like that, back in the day when amplification didn't exist), and thought he'd make the most of a probably once in a lifetime experience.
TeaDaemon like he does at 0:52
Bruce's versatility is infinite...
my two favorite groups..... Maiden and Tull..... anybody that hasnt heard Maiden's cover of Cross-Eyed Mary is lacking..... look it up
For years I thought Iron Maiden wrote the song.
I'm glad Bruce is such an Ian fan! Love Maiden and Tull!
Maiden did w Tull cover with Bruce on vocals back in the day! Check it out if you haven't heard it yet, it is awesome.
Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford best singers ever!!!!
well, that was before Urie Brendon.
I still can't believe this is Revelations by Iron Maiden. This is just so different and in my opinion, so much better
This is perfect! An atheist and an occultist playing in an anglican church, an anthem that was written by a catholic theologist. Sincretism, that's what i'm talking about! :D
Ians an occultist? 🤔
Unbelievably stunning. I wish they would record this in a studio and release it properly.
Bruce, give us more of your amazing voice unplugged...
Wow. When I first heard the arrangement of that hymn used as the intro to Maiden's "Revelations" I thought to myself that he should do the whole hymn like that sometime. Beautifully done.
REVELATIONS!!
the bestest song EVVERRR!!!
Jethro Tull is my favourite band of all times ... (thank you, 'uncle John D.'!)
This is absolutely beautiful....
Bruce is truly magical in every way, give me more!!!!!
i love you Bruce!!
Best singer in the world. Always will be. Long live Bruce. He is an absolute god.
This flute toutch my soul. what a beautifull!
this vidio almost made me cry! Bruce is the greatest singer of all time!! he dident even need a microphone to here his beautiful and powerful voice! omg this truely was stunning
Wow, I can't believe my favorite frontman/pilot performing with my other favorite frontman/flautist! Bless that former classmate of his that listened to Tull next to Bruce's dorm room! From listening and got addicted to Tull, now look at Bruce. He's very blessed to perform with the spectacular Ian Anderson!
Good point. I still think it was awesome to see two great performers together.
Goosebumps.. that was brilliant.
i am so stunned.
absolute LEGENDS... hows the power of BDs voice without the mic, a true powerhouse in Metal, a true artist :) love it
My God ... very interesting, do you suppose the builders of this cathedral ever drempt that in the future someone like Jethro Tull/Ian Anderson would be performing inside it ... truly this is amazing. Good ole Durovernum Cantiacorum!
Justgivemethetruth The builders of the cathedral saw it as as community gathering place as well as a place of worship. The English cathedrals only really became "set apart" as a result of the Protestant Reformation. The Counter-Reformation had a similar effect on the Continent.
+Justgivemethetruth wow! such a stupid and niave comment
+Mike Airley yes it is indeed, since Ian Anderson is not Jethro Tull. It is amazing how many unknowledgable people think Jethro Tull is a person.
Revelations
Good one! Great album
Wooowww woowww SO BEUATIFUL!!!
Finally, a correct description of what is being played here. Thank you.
wow two of my favourite bands together!
1 O God of earth and altar,
bow down and hear our cry,
our earthly rulers falter,
our people drift and die;
the walls of gold entomb us,
the swords of scorn divide,
take not thy thunder from us,
but take away our pride.2 From all that terror teaches,
from lies of tongue and pen,
from all the easy speeches
that comfort cruel men,
from sale and profanation
of honour and the sword,
from sleep and from damnation,
deliver us, good Lord!3 Tie in a living tether
the prince and priest and thrall,
bind all our lives together,
smite us and save us all;
in ire and exultation
aflame with faith, and free,
lift up a living nation,
a single sword to thee.
Thank you!
Finally I see the full version of this song! My God, man, THANK YOU so much for uploading this and Jerusalem! Of course 6 musical illiterates couldn't help themselves. The other 766, however, are, of course, saved.
wow.
The new "Voice" Bruce!!
Best version of Revelations. Ian Anderson and Bruce Dickinson, take a bow.
Thank you, thank you so much for the upload! This is exactly why he is the best singer in the world and such an inspiration to me. Enjoy this divinity.
LOVED IT! Iron Tull ftw!
no words, awesome!
Bruce is like a fine wine he gets better with age.
And this is one of many reasons i love Bruce. But i must say i love the whole sound of this performance.
bruce dickinson...the best singer ever
@topanteon This song is where Bruce found the inspiration to write Revelations back in '83, and he was inspired by/used GK Chesterton's anthem from 1906.
Kuucht ''Ladies and Gentlemen..... this is your Captain singing..... we are currently cruising at F**k off thousand feet, and will shortly be passing by an ancient, but well loved British monument, known as Ian Anderson, oops I mean Canterbury Cathedral! Many thanks for flying Maiden Airways, we hope your flight is as pleasant as my voice! Thankyou!!'' kuuuucht
Holy shit, this is awesome...
It's kind of Revelations with Ian Anderson, very good. I love this song. Piece of Mind is an excelent album. It will be great if Ian perform a new Cross Eyed Mary version with Maiden.
Awesome combination
Surreal!!!
oh man you hit the nail on the head.bruce or robbie?i'll go with bruce and that is not easy.rob halford has an amazing voice.soulfull, emotional, high notes that will crack your windows openand amazing power and energy.bruce is high power, high tempo high notes with power and bravado.easily by far best all round metal singers because aside from their enormous gifted talent, they have feel.great personalities aswell.but you cant beat bruce.he is off the charts.amazing singer and man.
Absolutely brilliant!
yes i listened to maiden's version of cross eyed mary and it's awesome.lets face the obvious truth and that is that iron maiden rule the music world.
I think he may be imitating Ian, like when he stands on one leg, Ian used to do some crazy dances on stage too. I am guessing that is why Bruce is acting "weird".
That was great. I want more!
Weird? He looks pretty normal to me.
St Bruce! Who would have thought!
awesome.
Great!
Amazing voice as always
What?
that was amazing!!
Grandi!
OK, that settles it, Bruce and Ian have to make an album together.
AWESOME!
Bruce doesn't even need a mic.
Martin Barre is still with Tull. This is an Anderson solo outing. Tull will be touring and performing the complete Thick As A Brick next year.
Is there a DVD from this or something??? I freakin' want this!!!
OH The great musician!
Amazing arrangement, 😀
Thoroughly appreciative of the brilliance of BD with Maiden, but this is something else.
Surely these legends must look at this and want to record together?
I hope so!!!
Bruce is my favorite singer period Halford #2 and Dio# 3 !
they should make a DVD of this! FUCKING BEATIFULL
35000th who enjoy this performance!
@dmxco I concur whole heartedly, He is my mentor and absolute idol and hero, if I ever met the man I don't know if I could even handle it!
I'd love to have Bruce on Facebook. I think his status updates would be just awesome!
All bullshit aside, that was one hell of a performance.
@BehindTheWallOfDoom He does not need!!! a Microphone!!!, his voice is fucking!!! fucking!!! POWEFULLLL!!!
Guess what two bands have been my favourite for the last 10 years?
Nice!
great
Pelecitos de gallina
Martin Barre has left Tull he has formed his own band with an Irish flute player and former members of Tull
Hmmm... Interesting. Didn't know that beginning of Bruce's "Revelations" is from that old song.
Bruce dickinson owns! Tho, I thought this was going to be Revelations on the start :P
the words to the song are from a poem called "A Hymn" by G. K. Chesterton. That's all I know.
@lionnew indeed it would :P
🙂, ✌️
@2734neil Is it true???? Incredible... i never thought Martin leave Ian !!
@Fruitsasd It's Florian Opahle.
To Sir with love ....just think about ...altfel ...Nihil Sine Deo !
I Love Bruce! But why his acted so weird!?
The intro of this song is on Revelations by Iron Maiden, had never heard the whole song is beautiful!!! ;)
Thanks for the video =)
have you ever seen them both live? have seen them both more then 10 times. Bruce is great with a lot of volume but not acoustic.
@BehindTheWallOfDoom It's a fucking cathedral. I think it's great he sang without a mic for the first verse.
What are they playing?
@tullmenagement please do tell me whats that parlor guitar this guy plays, and whats the preamp on the guitar...?? Please! Thx in advance
@GoldenAxeVox666 it's YOU that is the W******! FanBoi!!!!
Is is a Jam?? I recognize the melody from Revelations, and some of the lyrics.
Ok, thanks for this information because Bruce's version of this song is very good. Anyways, I don`t know if you agree that Revelations is a very good song and Piece of Mind a very good album
@savir1010 Why Far Cry 2? Because of the music?
@Diocletia777
seems Martin is no longer with Jethro tull :-(
Why should Bruce need a microphone anyway??
Well, Bruce has a real knowledge about the Thelemits texts and is member of the Golden Dawn, and i don't know if Ian Anderson is really atheist but he wrote some lyrics that talks about it and has some interviews that he declareted himself as an agnostic.... at all my comment is just a joke, you don't have to take it seriously. ;)
Is that Adrian Smith on the guitar?
about?
